Man alive. I dunno if Shane McMahon has the heel gene, but I sure seem to. I must get one of these a month. Could it be the problem really IS me? Maybe my exaggerated smug know-it-allishness isn't as obvious a joke as I seem to think it is? That not all wrestling fans are super good at recognizing a work when they see it. That the times when I break character and act reasonable don't make it clear I'm just being silly? Naaaaaaaaaaaaah, it's definitely everyone else. Stay the course! First star on the left, etc, etc. Anywho, I'm so glad you like my writing! And no, I don't think my analysis is better than everyone else's, but I think I'm safely in the top 20% or so. I'm generally more pessimistic about WWE's "main" product and don't give it the credit it's due, while I watch NXT with ruby shades, despite its quality dipping a bit with its lead booker gone. I also have pretty severe blind-spots for the non-WWE scene, which got me in trouble early on when I popped off about indies teaching "bad habits." But in terms of narrative structure and character development, I'm pretty rad. --- Anywho, here's my stating my case in a less exaggerated voice: This rumor dropped literally the day after Shane showed up. It is full of many of the hot-buttons that get the IWC revved up: a chance to dethrone StepHHH, Vince acting erratic and crazy, the popular (IMO because absent) Shane McMahon, possible backstage shakeups. No, I have no more sources than anyone else here, but this one stinks to high heaven, especially when WWE seems pretty stressed about 'Mania underperforming and wants to generate buzz. Very little evidence points to Steph or especially Hunter being in the doghouse. Whether or not HHH micromanages NXT, it's highly successful, and it was in large part his idea. When an executive pilots a successful program, he is associated positively with it for life, even if it fails once his hands are off it. Any time I hear Vince and Hunter talk about their relationship, it's clear Trips is the musclebound son Vinnie Mac always wanted. And if I recall correctly, the Network is getting on its feet and despite its shitty product, WWE's financials are in decent shape. I can see Shane being brought in to add a bit of creative spice, but not to wholly supplant the heirs apparent when the kingdom isn't in any peril. If this isn't an intentional leak from WWE to the dirt-sheets and webosphere, it is the dirt-sheets and webosphere drumming up clicks. Maybe I'm wrong. This story has so much momentum, it's possible i'm just tinfoil-hatting it here. But my gut and my head tells me this is a meta-work. And like the wrestling fans we are, we enjoy getting swept up in it, and get mad when someone points out it's not real. But until there's a blowup and one of the parties leaves WWE in a huff, I will sit here with my precious, precious grain of salt, complete dumbass that i am.
