And five minutes from my house, no less. I was just in the airport Wednesday night renting a car and am the frequent shuttlebus for my friends that fly in and out so I know the place fairly well.

Looks to possibly be a young National Guardsmen that either got his brains scrambled in Iraq or was on SSRI's and heard The Voices or somesuch thing that I read. Known to and met with the FBI and told them that the military was showing him ISIS videos then released due to not enough info to hold him on is one of the unverified stories. I'll try to find out more from an old friend that works in the professional helping people field, but that doesn't change the fact that 5 people are dead at the hands of some deranged nut.

I knew there was a joke in there somewhere and you nailed it, good sir.

And is it me or does it feel like this particular shooting is getting less press than usual? I just don't feel like I'm seeing quite the usual amount of "OMG pray for Fort Lauderdale!" stuff on Facebook and there's nothing about it on the Yahoo main page anymore, for example.

From Left to Right in no particular order:

1 - His name and people he killed doesn't warrant media attention like, say, Dylan Roof and who he killed did.

2 - The Feds completely fucked up because a month or so ago he wandered into a field office and all but told them what he was going to do and they, outside of turning him over to local PD who in turn passed him along to a hospital, let him loose.

3 - The incident continues to shine a light on how vets and/or mentally ill are dealt with in 'Murica.

4- It highlights yet another occurrence of gun violence in a gun free zone. Florida is one of six states, I believe, where you cannot conceal carry in the unsecured areas of airports. Which is odd considering what a yahoo (R) state it is outside of Tampa Bay and Broward County, which is where Ft. Lauderdale is located.

5 - People expect and are desensitized to this stuff now for various reasons.

6 - It's South Florida which, like, is barely 'Murica so no one gives a shit.

I subscribe to some of these theories, some I'd have to meditate on, others I could be convinced or persuaded are incorrect. No janerd gimmickry on this one. Real life and death stuff like this literally hits a bit too close home to joke about. But I did like Matte's zinger. Though I wouldn't have minded being there as I tend to be a 'judged by twelve rather than carried by six' kinda guy.

Guns are everywhere, kids. Go ahead and try to collect every penny ever minted because there's an analogously equivalent amount of bullets out there to match. Rough estimates say there's a gun for every man, woman, child, and whatever Matte is in this country, which is about 320 million people. The horses, as they say, have long since left the barn as far as hoovering up guns wholesale.

Education regarding firearms, awareness of their varying purposes, vigilance towards those that would misuse them, and an understanding that it's a very difficult cake and eat it too balance betwixt complete security and a free and open society seem to be the most prudent way to avoid these terrible incidents in the future.

Declaring a location a gun free zone does not in any way preclude some nut from doing what criminals do best, which is ignore the law. It is no coincidence the highest incidences of gun violence by far happen in gun free zones and cities with the strictest anti-gun laws. Does that mean I advocate gun in the hand of every man, woman, child, and WMI? No, absolutely not. But a reasonable (HA!) discussion is, at the very least, owed on behalf of everyone lost to gun violence and how to stop them from occuring again. I repeat, hoovering up the guns is not an option, much like getting rid of illicit drugs.

So they're here for good, now what? The range is open, let's shoot the shit.

Part of it is his name isn't Mohammed, part is race/religion/sexual orientation are not involved, part is that Obama wanted people like this that are under psychiatric care to lose their gun ownership but that was blocked by the NRA, I mean the GOP.

A big part is that he was taken alive so there is no need to speculate on motive since we can, you know, ask him.

So on the press side, there isn't a clear side that they can take to justify their previous rants, on the social media side no one gives a shit about Florida or anyone in there... j/k I think we are now desensitized to violence like this without the press to get us riled up.

Not sure how they fucked up. Sounds like that's how it' supposed to work...until you get to the hospital part. Not sure what they could have done that they didn't; getting him to medical care is a fine job by LE.

I think you nailed what the press could rally about. I wonder why they aren't.

On a related but not note I travel a lot. A few months ago I sent a note to my local airport manager pointing out the wasted money/lack of training for LE at the facility. Friday's at 3, they huddle at a certain spot, perfect targets for a shooter. Without fail they are in the same spot every time I land Friday afternoons. I sent her her original response to my email after this asking if she was reconsidering her position. It isn't rocket science what needs to be done, but the mundane & human nature end up leaving people vulnerable.

How the fuck can a guy shoot 5 people in an airport and be taken alive, while sitting in a parked car at a traffic stop can get someone killed?

Respectfully disagree, Kimosabe.

http://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/community/broward/article125190274.html

Leaving one's infant son in a vehicle in the Alaska winter, whether the heat was on or not, with the alleged future murder weapon, even if the baby was too goo goo ga ga to operate it, to then walk into an FBI office and say things like 'CIA mind control' and 'ISIS videos' seems like the perfect candidate to be indefinitely confined to a loony bin until such time that he can be properly vetted for release. Him being in the armed services makes his personal history all the more easier to uncover.

If the Feds and then local PD did everything within the confines of the law they are bound by, then every effort should be made to examine every speck of the DNA of said law that allowed this obviously disturbed person to walk free and have the eventual murder weapon returned to him merely a month later.

Again, I posit that we have more of a mental health/education issue than a ZOMG GUNZ VIOLENCE!!! issue in this country. Whether it's Dems or Repubs to blame, well, I'll leave that to finer and more nuanced minds than I have to deliberate.

So you notice that stuff too. Good on you and thank you for your situational awareness and willingness to speak up. One of the most important aspects of an effective security detail is to not spend time slackjawing in stationary groups or having predictable watch patterns/sweeps, both of which you noticed. Bad guys notice that kind of thing too.

Some unpleasant video illustrating what happens in an active shooter event. No blood or death, but it highlights what happens when a person's fight or flight kicks in.

The only solution I see is decades of slow, gradual change. How that can happen is beyond my capabilities to calculate, especially since gun issues are so wrapped up in other social issues, but a good start would be to reinstate the assault weapons ban. Nobody has good intentions with a machine gun.

Dude we agree even though you respectfully disagree. LE is handcuffed (see what I did there) by laws. Medical people do the assessment/ confine. Things really did work...cept for the law part. That's legislation, and we all know how that breaks down.

maybe they could have charge him with endangering the life of the baby, child abuse or some version of. But that ain't keeping him in the hooskow for ever.

I hate shootings, bombs, missiles, grenades and other application of Chinese invented gun powdered stuff...

I am aware that this was not a mass shooting or even in the US, but the London attack yesterday was horrific.

Not only did the attacker run people down, he then attacked with a knife.

My takeaways:
1 - a gun or a bomb would have been a million times worse
2 - the reports out of London of people helping strangers (including a member of parliament trying to stop the blood flow on a chest wound), was fantastic and brings me some small glimmer of hope that humanity is not pieces of shit
3 - Donald Trump Jr. brought me back from that optimistic feeling.

4 people shot in apparent murder-suicide at an elementary school in San Bernadino, CA.

- 2 injured are students
- 2 dead were adults
- Suspect is down

Holy shit...at an elementary school. Again.

No comments yet about today's "two for one" shootings at the GOP baseball practice in DC and the UPS facility in San Francisco?

And I wonder how much Hannity and his ilk are salivating over the fact that the GOP shooter was a left-wing Bernie supporter? Though on the negative side, it wasn't a Muslim immigrant, so you can't push the "build that wall/we need to institute the travel ban NOW" agenda (okay, sorry if that was kinda dark but let's face it, it's probably at least a little bit true).

Been following the DC shooting pretty closely. I live in Steve Scalise's district, and while I think he's a piece of shit, in no way is this acceptable.

Glad the guy who did it was caught quickly, though kind of a bummer he got to die quick and not face any real justice. Hoping that Scalise makes a full recovery.

Except for the fact that he also wasn't a fan of Hillary, either, and had anti-Hillary posts on his timeline as well. I'm sure that this is going to get glossed over by them, but that fact still remains.

My viewing of this, and this is pure speculation since none of us truly know what caused it, but part of this I believe was in response to the proposed cuts to Medicaid and Social Security that were brought forth by Republicans. I believe it was because of this due to the fact that the man was 66 years old and these cuts will deeply affect the elderly such as himself. So you have a guy who basically has nothing to lose and had a target.

He's still an absolute psychopath that deserves to get killed for his actions, there's no denying that. I don't care how much I might disagree with the people that currently represent that party, I'm never going to pull a weapon on or physically lay my hands on somebody as a result of it since those are the actions of a psycho.

The dark-humored side of me, though, has to kinda laugh a bit at the fact that this guy, who is clearly deranged, was able to gain access to firearms and was so pissed off at a guy who, among his first actions, made it easier for those with mental illness to gain access to guns.
