As a 6'1" Canadian dude....nope.
Serious question...do you feel like you need one for protection, or just think they are cool?

Oddly enough a modern folding trench knife, regardless of all the horror stories from World War One, is fairly humane. If it get's down to
business just pop the other guy right in the mouth or nose with the knuckles. That's probably sufficient to stop about 99% of bad situations in
one shot.
You know, everyone says it's not supposed to make sense, like that's the whole point, dude. And I'm just saying, you know,
that's like an excuse for lazy storytelling. Just don't sell me shite and tell me it's gold, all right? I might be stoned, but

For a serious kitchen, you can't go wrong with CutCo knives.
They are fantastic, and the I love the basic kit that I have, It took 1 hour at an airport, but I got total clearance to bring mine across the
Pacific with me to China. I wasn't letting those things become homeless fodder. They're too nice.

1 - Yes, I want one for protection. Better safe than sorry I guess. It's rare for me to stray into too rough of areas these days, but I would
just like to have one in my truck and on my nightstand.
2 - That folding trench is fucking amazing. What drew me to the first knife I posted was the finger holes. The trench knife is that on roids. Only
thing I don't like is the folding aspect, but I get it, nothing is perfect. The one I posed could very well be a knife to carry when out and
about, and that trench knife seems to be a good fit for my nightstand.

Anyone here experienced with defense knives? Any recommendations?
Easy there, Pony Boy. Are the Socs up to shenanigans again at the diner? Knives are good for cutting line or fillets. They are shit for defense unless
you're Jack Bauer or a highly trained military-grade operator. Or if you're as technically skilled as these guys...
But in all seriousness folks, even the people that are trained to use them pretty much tell you not to because you're gonna get cut regardless
of how good you are with them and you have to be really, really, really good to even have a chance damaging someone to the point where they no longer
are a danger to you. Also, it requires that you literally have to be within arms length of your opponent to even have a chance of striking any kind of
blow, let alone a fatal one.
There are a few better options that leave using a knife for defensive purposes as an extreme last ditch choice against an aggressor.
1) Situational awareness. The far and away best choice for avoiding confrontation. To the best of your abilities and capacity to reason, know what and
where you're walking into. Certainly, you can't envision every single thing that can go wrong just living your life or entertain every
twisted paranoid fight scenario fantasy, but I can and do all the time and those years of anxious planning for the unknown is the gift I give to you.
2) Run the fuck away. If you find yourself in a dicey situation, just bolt for safer confines or away from the trouble you find yourself entering.
Forget that macho bullshit of imagineering yourself as some type of John Wick-esque movie badass that's going to kill your way out of a bad
situation with even badder bad guys. Just falling and hitting your head on a curb can kill you. Add some goons to the mix stomping your head into
paste to the mix gets you even deader.
3) Pepper spray. Non-lethal and generally accepted as okay to use by a judicial system that would otherwise frown upon you trying to slice some
asshole that was trying to fight you and will most assuredly want to know your line of thinking in a court of law when the perp sues you and/or the
prosecutor finds your use of a blade to be overzealous. Know the laws of your particular area of operation.
4) Tazer/Stun gun/collapsible baton. Slightly more regulated than pepper spray but with the added benefit of putting someone out on their feet and
having the head hit the concrete/lawsuit thing come into effect. Also, along with the pepper spray, there's the added bonus of pissing off the
assailant and rage activating his rape glands located in his taintal region should those items not put them down initially.
5) Guns. Fuck yeah. Oh, right, responsible gun ownership. *siiiiiiiiiiiigh* Fine, whatevs. Go to a range, buy some time with an instructor, and blow
off some steam by blowing off some rounds. Decent pocket pistols are relatively cheap and don't require you to be in arms length of a threat to
use. Look into a CCW permit and most definitely dive into your local laws and ordinances as to where you can and can't go with one. They
aren't evil, use them responsibly, and if it comes to it, shoot the bad guy in the face. Lol, j/k, aim for center mass, not the face as you
don't want a round to go sailing through your target into someone else.

Check the local and state laws regarding blade length, then carry a sword.
You have the added range over a knife, plus the deterrent factor of being a guy walking down the street with a sword on your hip/across your back. I
mean who is going to fuck with a guy that has a sword walking down the street?

If you do this, shave your head. Then cut a non-lethal slit across your throat and "sew" it shut with safety pins. Wear some cheap 80's torn
up leather. Walk around with a gravelly voice, saying, "There can be only one."

Make sure it's a katana. No one takes a guy carrying a rapier or a broadsword seriously.

This is exactly why I am looking for models that have finger holes. As for getting someone to the point where they are no longer a threat... If I was
a mugger and someone suddenly had that first knife sticking out from under their thumb, I would shit myself.
quote:Also, it requires that you literally have to be within arms length of your opponent to even have a chance of striking any kind of blow, let

I'm hoping that if it came to it, a fatal strike wouldn't be an option. I have no eagerness to end someone because they're drunk and
stupid, or broke and desperate. As for the reach issue? This is exactly why I want a knife. The most likely scenario of being in need of a knife is
simply walking alone on a sidewalk, and not having a chance to really keep my distance, until it happens. You know, your typical asshole either
picking a fight, or trying to jump someone. In this case, I really don't want a handgun, because that means either I'm walking with a gun
in my hand, or fumbling to get it out of my pocket. Fuck both of those options. One might be great for home protection, but just going out for a late
night jog would be a bit crazy.

4) Tazer/Stun gun/collapsible baton.
I'm the most aware person I know I think. Running is a good option and I'm pretty fast, but just in case they're faster... I have
mace and have mixed feelings. If it's windy or simply doesn't work because it suddenly malfunctions would be bad. I do have some and I
have carried it before. Tazers are great, but the size is just a bit much. Batons worry me because if you miss, you might be in big trouble. Also, I
don't want to see someone's skull crack open.
Those are all valid points you raise to varying degrees. But I just kinda want to pretend I'm this guy...

Apologies in advance, but here are some graphic instances of people using mace in a fight with negative outcomes for them...
Here's a reasonable solution that solves both of our concerns...
