Asuka to Break Goldberg's Record?

I just read a post on CageSide Seats that said that, last night, Asuka just won her 165th match since joining WWE and competing in NXT. She has repeatedly been announced as being undefeated since joining the company, but to the best of my knowledge, it hasn't been making a point of hyping up her total number of wins on TV. Admittedly, I haven't been paying close attention to the weekly NXT shows in a long time, so I may be wrong. The CageSide post on the subject was the first I learned of her record.

Is Asuka closing in on Golberg's record something that the company makes a point of mentioning whenever she wrestles? If not, one has to wonder why that is. One would think that it would take every opportunity to milk her undefeated streak for what it is worth. She's only 8 more wins away from tying Goldberg's record. I think that is worth paying attention to. If NXT booked it right, they would make a big deal out of her win streak and try to set up another competitor as a real serious threat to her streak and title reign in order for her to get her 174th win. I can't imagine that she would break his streak with little to no fanfare.

I am strongly in favor of anything that is bad for Goldberg.

HHH probably doesn't want to bring too much attention to it, lest Vince and Buck get involved and fuck it up.

The other "problem" is that that number is likely heavy on house shows, so unless you pull her from the house show rotation to play out the story in TV only matches being 7 matches out from tying the "record" is a bit problematic to play out (and yes, it's wrestling, so they could always just pretend the house show wins aren't happening going forward for the purposes of this story).

Odds are no one noticed, otherwise the time to start talking about this as a story would have been like 30 matches out.. put a bit of a hey come see the house shows as they matter (they could even film her wins to show on TV) then set up a gauntlet of a big challenger... even if she didn't wrestle on TV every week they do what... 2 house shows a week... so at 2-3 wins a week blowing through 30 matches wouldn't take long and could have given you time to throw some drama into the storyline.

I really think the WWE is missing the boat on using house shows for the TV storylines a bit more... I don't mean storyline developments (which they have done from time to time... see Guerrero vs JBL from 2004 or 2005), but with the brand split they could have done something different with one of the brands, like a win-loss rankings... this would have made the house show matches mean a bit more which might have made them a bit more of a draw if fans thought they were watching something that also meant something, or at least make the fans at the house shows feel like they saw something meaningful.

^^^ agree

I've become a "live event bitch" and only go to local shows if they are televised i.e. Raw, Smackdown, PPV. Since I've always been in major markets, those are by far more frequent than house shows, but the house shows do come through here and I don't go. Just no interest.
