I take it Aries wanted to be more than just a cruiserweight and Vince felt the exact opposite. I just hope that he stays far away from TNA.

How does a man who just had a WRESTLEMANIA title shot and two subsequent PPV title matches just get released?

Maybe I should look up some Impact videos, but Aries never did much for me in WWE.

I thought his little break after losing the CW Title matches was going to be his transition from the CW division to the actual roster. Apparently not. Kind of sucks.

I don't know if it's related, but Aries just published a book on vegan eating. It was released today in book stores. Writing books and making speaking engagements is certainly less stress on the body than wrestling.

GaaaaaaaaaaadIT! Dude was gold on the mic. I saw him as very Punk-like (both in-ring and backstage) which makes me wonder if that ultimately was his undoing.

If people were down on Finn Balor for his size, he looks like Big Show next to Aries. Dude is straight short.

He's a really good talent, but on the upper side of the age range and yeah, clearly not destined to get a big push. If he can't win the CW title, he's definitely not going to contend for the IC belt. Some guys make more money on the indies or maybe he's just got enough that he'd rather go be a big fish in a smaller pond. Nothing wrong with that.

Aries should go to Japan. He's gonna be way to expensive for indies now and he's good enough to be in New Japan, but if it's true about his attitude problems...well....good luck, man.

I never understood what made him "The Greatest Man Alive". What was the point of that nickname?

He's a damn good worker, but as a personality, he never really did it for me.

I will echo Sal's sentiments.

I'm more than happy to watch an Austin Aries match. However, there is nothing special about Aries as a character.

Twenty years ago, I might have thought losing a worker of his calibre would have sucked, but there are so many quality workers in the business today that having Aries leave is no great loss.

Eh, the WWE environment is a shitty place to work in so it's a given every now and then somebody will choose peace of mind over the money or just won't gel with the walk on eggshells feeling.

His personality shined a lot more in TNA than what WWE showed. ''The Greatest Man Alive'' was a ludicrous self given nickname from an asshole heel which everybody accepted as the legit thing as he turned face. Same deal as AJ's ''Face that runs the place'' nickname.

I think that's the problem - my WWE introduction to his character was mostly as a face, and it made no sense to me why a face would have that nickname. At least, when AJ became "The Face That Runs The Place" as a heel and then kept it as a face, it all happened in context of his WWE timeline.

For all of the stuff you hear about Aries being a bit of a dick, when I took my oldest daughter to Mania in Dallas (she was 8 at the time) we met Aries at Axxess and you couldn't have asked to meet a more friendly, pleasant dude. He took a few minutes and talked to my kid like she was the coolest person he'd ever met and she absolutely adored him for it, and I'll always respect the shit out of him for that. I know you could say "well they HAVE to be nice to fans" but Emma sure didn't get that memo. But yes, as noted, dude is shorter in person than he looks on TV.

Pretty short-sighted of WWE in my eyes to not at least give him a test run against, like, Miz or somebody before letting him go, but the indy/not-WWE scene is super hot again. Aries vs. Cody for the ROH title, Aries vs. Okada, Aries vs. Naito are all possibilities now. He'll be okay and I wouldn't even be too terribly surprised to see him get another run since his girl just signed with them.

A promo binge between Aries and Miz would have been a lot of damn fun. Even if he has an "attitude" (what does that even mean and who in this business doesn't have one anyway?) what he could have brought in terms of promos and wrestling should have outweighed it. Another WWE screw up and the shame of it is that right now they're so loaded with talent right now they don't even have to care.

You know, everyone says it's not supposed to make sense, like that's the whole point, dude. And I'm just saying, you know, that's like an excuse for lazy storytelling. Just don't sell me shite and tell me it's gold, all right? I might be stoned, but I'm not high. You know what I mean?

This one makes me really sad. Austin Aries has been one of my favorite wrestlers over the last decade. I followed his runs in ROH and TNA closely and thought he was fantastic in the ring and was great on the mic as well.

Unfortunately, he barely got to show off any of those mic skills in NXT/WWE, which was unfortunate, bc as someone said earlier, he had the CM Punk vibe to him (in the past I've said, some of his attitude/promos reminded me of Stone Cold Steve Austin in how he can have the crowd eating out of the palm of his hand, especially as a tweener).

I point out the "Golden Snack Cakes" promo in ROH from their Supercard of Honor V show (it's about an hour and 18 mins into the event) for how good he could be. Unfortunately, the link I had no longer works, but maybe one of you could find it (or have it).

I know this won't be a big loss for the WWE itself, as the train will keep on rolling and I'm sure Aries himself will land on his feet bc he could most likely easily go to NJPW and make good money between there and the indys. I'm just saddened by the lost potential. I could imagine the promos/matches with guys like the Miz, Ambrose, Owens, etc.

Such a shame that no one in the writing team could figure something out for him.

I'm sure the team wanted to have fun with him, but if I were to guess, Vince finally walked up to him and just got turned off by his height and said something to the rest of creative that let them know that Aries ain't a Vince guy.

I've always liked him. Hell, he is one half of the most ridiculous spot I've ever seen live (avalanche Canadian Destroyer from Petey Williams at Glory By Honor 8, Danielsons last ROH show). He's a class performer and he's always a treat to watch.

Have a good time in NJPW, Aries.

The rumor crap version is that Aries complained a little too loudly about not receiving royalties from Wrestlemania because his match was bumped to the pre-show. This, combined with him not being well-liked by the rest of the roster due to his attitude, was the reason he was let go.

What I heard is that the pre-show wasn't included in the WM DVD/Blu-ray, so he wouldn't be getting any of those royalties.

I would be upset about that myself. Heck, as a fan I'd be annoyed to buy a Blu-ray of the show and not get the whole event (yes, it includes the HoF and other stuff, but still, the pre-show IS part of the show).

So I don't blame him about complaining about that one. That could have easily been fixed and made a multi-disk set (which it should be from the start). Lame to screw over the talent with that.

I can see being upset about it. But being vocal about that upset is obviously just going to get you in trouble when you're at the level Aries was in the company. The HHH/Vince response is basically going to be "You're lucky you were there at all". Again, not saying that's the right response, but it's certainly predictable. I know there's the story from Jericho's book about standing up for himself to Vince and how it can pay off, but, well, Austin Aries is no Chris Jericho.
