Dragon Age: Origins

Just to add to the current flurry of new game threads starting up, has anyone bought this yet or plan on buying it? I just read the review on Gamespot.com and fuck if it doesn't sound incredible. I'm really wanting to get it but I haven't even bought Uncharted 2 yet, which was at the top of my list. Dragon Age may trump it though.

I was looking at it, but I have a big backlog of games and less and less time to play each week. For what it's worth a lot of the reviews are saying that the PC version is the way to go if you have the hardware because it's a) easier to manage all the options that are available and b) it has nicer graphics. I'm most intrigued by the idea that that there seem to be a whole set of social and political relations between the different races and factions in the game that affect how different characters react to you and each other, and which gives it the feeling of a fully realized game world.

I'd love to hear how that works out if you end up getting it.

I saw nOOb playing this the other day, so he should be able to give some insight on it.

I really want this game-- the visuals look amazing, what I've read about the story sounds great and it's getting very good reviews. But I think I'm going to hold off for a bit. I'm still playing through Borderlands, next week I'll pick up Modern Warfare 2 and probably Left 4 Dead 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 the week after that. Those should keep me busy for quite a long time.

In response to Muerto, I think I'm going to get the PS3 version. I recently bought a laptop but I don't think I've played a game on a computer since the original Doom.

Glad I'm not the only one who was completely underwhelmed by BL. The really aggravating thing is that the demo was a blast so I was really excited but everything after the opening level was a huge letdown.

Yep, I have an initial review: it's pretty fun, but I'm a bit disappointed with the graphics. There are way too many instances where a guys next will be distorted, where a guy will have a big patch of black under his armor, or will just be a bit too disoriented. And I'm not a big fan of the AI, but if you've played Mass Effect or KOTOR, you know what to expect. Other than that, the gameplay is solid, it borrows a bit from Final Fantasy XII with giving your guy static commands like "Heal yourself when your health is under 10%" or "Attack a guy with this move if his armor is so high", and everything is great.

Also nice: buying a new copy for the foreseeable future nets you two DLC codes: the Mass Effect 2/Dragon Age item and the DLC character Shale, along with the quest to get him.

I'm actually considering this after reading the review on IGN. I haven't really seen a good RPG in ages, so this may just jump onto my "have to check it out" list.

Well I bought it yesterday and it's... not bad.

It's more in the KoTOR vein of gameplay you can cue up a couple of commands for each party member while paused and then resume and watch it play out in a turn based fashion (as opposed to Mass Effect being more real-time.)

The voice acting ranges from passable to god-awful as most Bioware games tend to but it's only as distracting as it was from anyone not Kreia or Bao Dur so, take that as you will...

The origin stories work well. Basically every race has 2 sects (usually a noble and a peasant type) from which your character begins his journey into the world and actions undertaken in said origin will impact upon dialogue later on. There's a point where all the origin stories merge into the main one but I'm going to presume there will be different sub-quests depending on your class/race/sect choice too.

All in all, so far, it's pretty good but it's not breaking any new ground.

And yeah Brutal Legend was bitterly dissapointing, if it weren't for the soothing voice of Tim Curry it may have been a disaster.

Well, now issues are starting to pile up, especially concerning X-Box Live and the EA Servers, which is completely inexcusable for a game that has no multiplayer whatsoever. Basically, if you have the DLC for this game and your game loses a connection to either Live or the EA servers (both of which can go down at completely random times on their own), the game gives you an error message saying it cannot communicate with the server and freezes up. Apparently, this has been happening for quite a few people and happened to me yesterday night in the middle of a long period without an Auto-Save, so I'm a bit pissed about this. I'd recommend playing the game DLC-free until they make a patch (or, unfortunately, not at all).

I got this game for Christmas and have been playing it a bit. I'm not really too far into it yet, I've just completed the Grey Wardens stuff.

Is combat supposed to be slow? It seems like whenever I go to hit an enemy with my sword, my character moves slow as fuck with it.

According to just about everyone who's played the PC version of this game as well as a console version of the game, the console version has quite a few quirks to it. Then again, the slow part may be dependent on your HDD. Has everything else on your 360 moved slow? If so, that's probably not a good sign.

Oh nah, I didn't mean there was anything wrong with the actual game or my system. I just meant that I push the A button to attack, and my guy moves as if his sword weighs 300 pounds. The enemies seem to be able to get in two attacks on me before I can even get one.

I know what you mean about the slow attacks punker.

Thus far I just haven't been able to get into this game. Maybe it's my love of KOTOR and Jedi clouding my judgment but I just haven't enjoyed Dragon Age as much as I though I would. I'll have to give it another shot in a few weeks

I beat this game last night.

It took a little while to get the hang of it, but once I did, it was amazing. I'd been playing it like an obsessive fool for the past week, and I'm already looking forward to playing through it again with a different character and making the opposite choices that I did this time-- I was mostly a good character this playthrough, I think I'll go the evil route with my next one.

I bought Mass Effect when it first came out, but never really played it much. Playing this really makes me want to start that one finally, and then get the sequel that comes out next week.

On Mass Effect: be sure to beat it before you play ME2, cause you can move your character from 1 to 2 and everything he did in 1 moves over to 2 (and I guess I mean everything). Just so you know, you'll love it compared to Dragon Age.

On Dragon Age: I'm tempted to replay it just to get all the Origin Story achievements (and maybe make a chick to sleep with the two guys and get those achievements), but right now I'm stuck on Mass Effect. Not that it matters, since I'll be replaying Dragon Age in a month when the Broken Steel-esque expansion pack comes out that ups the level cap and adds on a whole new story.

Well, I started my second playthrough. This time, I went with female City Elf... the first time, i was a male Human Noble. I may take a break though and finally give Mass Effect a go. Does it play pretty similarly to this game?

Mass Effect is a bit more action oriented, so to speak. You still have special abilities that act as magic and what not, but your typical method of killing is guns and grenades, and you're usually being attacked via projectiles, so you're never overmatched and have to rely on dodging attacks, good cover, and proper use of abilities and weapons. And the dialog system is a bit familiar.

Also, it is one of the best 360 games around, so you should play it even if none of that seems appealing (which it should).

Sorry to bring back such an old thread, but it turns out this game is awesome. After seeing my roommate play Dragon Age I decided to give it another chance and I'm damn glad I did. The Dwarf Noble origin was awesome and I can't wait to go back to the dwarf world in the main quest. The slow attack thing is still annoying so much so that I abandoned two handed weapons after level 6.

I'm sorry I waited this long to finally play this game. Maybe next I'll finally play Mass Effect

I endeed up being a total fiend for this game. I played the shit out of it including all the origin stories, the expansion, and all the DLC. I think what I enjoyed the most was the banter between the different party members. That made the characters feel a lot more like people and less like walking skill-sets that you needed to get through levels. Definitely check out Awakening, but the other DLC is pretty skippable.

I recently went through the two Mass Effects. They were a lot of fun, but really not quite the same experience as DA:O. Lots of goodness in there, but the world didn't seem quite as vibrant at DA:O's.

I still need to get the Awakenings expansion and two of the DLCs, but I plan to soon enough... definitely before Dragon Age II comes out early next year. Like Muerto, I played this game like a total obsessive freak and loved every minute of it. Part of the fun too was going through a second playthrough (which I also need to finish), and being a total jerk to everyone.

All (or at least most) of the DLC expansions are on sale this week on Xbox Live... I downloaded the three I'd never played last night. This deal may or may not end today, I'm not really sure, so if you want to get them on the cheap you'd better jump on it.

Did anybody else pre-order Dragon Age II before January 11 to get the free $20 of DLC content? I'm planning on playing through this game one more time from start to finish in anticipation of the sequel coming out in a month and a half here.

Yeah, I preordered it...from Best Buy. Judging how well preordering the Collector's Edition went last time, I'm a bit worried.

FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUU!

Damn it. Didn't know about this or I would have immediately hopped on board. Even if I'm not as big a fan of the new artistic direction they are going with in the game, that's a SMALL negative in the many positives I expect out of DA2. If it's one thing this company has shown it's that their sequels are usually better than the original! (I'm looking at Shadows of Amn baby).

You can still get some pre-order bonuses with the game, just not as many-- http://dragonage.bioware.com/da2/info/order/
