WWE Announcer issues

[Quote]According to PWInsider.com, Michael Cole is getting backstage heat in WWE due to the belief that he isn't taking his job seriously anymore. The company is apparently not happy with some of the "stupid" comments he has made on TV recently and they also feel that he is no longer putting the company first.

There could end up being a shuffling of announcers. According to F4WOnline.com, the situation with Matt Striker doing commentary with Cole on RAW could be WWE testing the waters to see how the different announce team combinations sound

I don't understand. Stupid comments are vintage Cole.

I thought he was actually starting to play a heel announcer, condoning the pedigree on Hornswoggle and trashing all the NY teams.

Maybe I've just been oblivious to his apparently growing stupidity, but I haven't noticed much of a change in him.

Maybe the PTSD from the Heindenreich rape has finally caught up to him.

Not to defend Cole too much, but there isn't exactly a huge crop of replacements to take his spot if they fire him. I have nothing against Grisham or Matthews but they're both a little too generic to step up to full-timing it for RAW. WWE's last attempts at hiring from outside (Mike Adamle, Mike Goldberg telling them to fuck off) ended disasterously. Even Tony Schiavone's found a much better life after wrestling and probably wouldn't be interested in coming back to the industry anyway. The return of Coach? Ugh. Unless Vince himself took over the announce table again they look like they're kind of screwed.

and JR is out of action, so they are really fucked. But this now also gives him more barganing power as his contract I think is almost up.

I'll take generic over aggresively obnoxious and retarded.

Don't worry, I don't think Coach is going to leave his cushy ESPN gig to come back to WWE. And Vince > Cole, so bring him on. Throw some money around and steal Mike Hogewood from ROH. Let Lawler be a one man crew or partner him with a poorly behaved orangutan. Whatever. I literally will support anything that gets Michael Cole off the announce table.

Would it be wrong to mention that the WWE does pay Joey Styles?

Good reminder, thanks. They've got the best unused announcer in recent wrestling history gathering dust on website management to use if they need him. This is, of course, assuming Vince figures out that applying the official formula to the announcers is even dumber than applying it like a suffocating blanket to all the wrestlers.

He totally is, and he really isn't as bad as you might think. He's got some bad habits and tries a little too hard to be funny, and he used to inexplicably yell "slap the porpoise!" everytime a match ended which turned into a little running gag over at 411 for awhile, but all things being equal he's infinitely better than Cole. He tends to not yell too much like Cole does and when he does yell he doesn't sound like a nasally, indignant 16 year-old girl that just found out she can't go see the new Twilight movie because she has to go to Grandma's birthday party like Cole does every single fucking time he raises his voice. Obviously Hoge isn't the ideal voice of Raw but like I said, I'm really at the point where I would literally accept anybody else regardless of qualifications or experience.

Although since BFG mentioned it, I definitely would be more than OK with Joey Styles calling Raw

Wasn't part of the issue with Styles that he didn't like travelling? Granted, its only two days a week, but still...

I wouldnt be suprised if we get JR and King back on Raw by WM26, Striker and Grisham do SD, and Joey calls ECW from Stamford. Thats assuming there IS a problem.

I'd laugh if Vince blames Raw's poor ratings on a lack of JR.

thing with your ECW plan is that ECW is taped one hour before it airs, not enough time for Joey to dub his voice from Stamford so it goes on the air. Although I do think Joey does travel with WWE for the WWE.com bits.

If he's there then why on earth didn't they use him when JR first took ill? Idiots.

Throw money at JBL and get things back to the way they were before they started fucking around - King/JR, Cole/JBL. Hell, JBL could probably do well with Grisham or Striker, but they might wanna leave them two on ECW.

Well, maybe tonight was a test for Vince Mcmahon back on the table.

Not likely, but it was funny to see Vince revert back to "good guy" Vince tonight acting as if he had no power during the the last match on RAW.

Wasn't there a period in 1997 where he was still a commentator but was acknowledged as the boss? I seem to remember guys like Bret Hart referencing it while he was still at the booth.

I thought Styles' problem with play-by-play was that he wasn't allowed to be himself. Rather, he got sick of having someone in his ear constantly telling him what to say and harp on - instead of just letting him call the match.

Or do I misremember?

I think that was happening right before the screw job. From then on, he was Mr Mcmahon.

Yeah, I think the people who approached or harrassed McMahon while he was on commentary were being 'edgy" and breaking kayfabe by doing so. Bret did it, and D-X would do it; and I remember feeling like it was a big deal.

I could have sworn that McMahon was at the announce table and Stone Cold was in the ring yelling down to him or even on mic talking about who runs things in the WWF. I am not sure if this was pre or post Montreal however. I am pretty sure it was before that.

I definitely remember him being stunnered long before the Mr McMahon days. He was just interviewing Austin in the ring, in a red and black 'Raw is War' jacket...

I actually enjoyed "The Body" and McMahon working the last match of the night.
It was a nice change as I find all the commentators today tend to shill this PPV or this DVD etc .... McMahon and Ventura actually called moves on Raw. They should bring back periodically some of these old school moments. Such as having the Wrestler or the superstar as they're now called doing some post match live interviews in the ring trash talking the opponent they will face at the next PPV.
