WWE Re-signs a former tag team champion
From pwinsider -
quote: Former WWE Tag Team Champion Joey Mercury, who has also wrestled under the name Joey Matthews, is set to return to WWE according to several
sources. He is probably best remembered for being part of the MNM team with John Morrison (then Johnny Nitro), managed by Melina.
Mercury, who was released by WWE in March of 2007, worked independents for a time before retiring in 2008, reportedly due to injury issues. The
tentative plan is for Mercury to be part of the Smackdown brand, which puts him on the same show as Morrison.
Joey could always work, but almost literally went the way of Marty Janetty to Morrison's HBK. Janetty and Matthews were the better workers, but
their partners where the future stars.
Anyways, I wonder if they'll play off his real life struggles and put him in with Punk's society. Gallows and Merc could be the tag team
of the group.
What real life struggles might you ask? Well here's his wiki excerpt -
quote: During an interview, Birch revealed that he had been using drugs since he was 15, using cocaine, crack and heroin, and mixing it with
alcohol.[61]
I've been a drug addict and alcoholic since I was 15 years old, right before I started in wrestling -- so that's the better part of
15 years.
Adam Birch
As a result of this, Birch has overdosed three times, and wrecked ten cars.[61] Birch entered rehab in 2006, and missed six months of work.[61] After
his return, Birch became addicted to painkillers, due to the facial injury he suffered at the Armageddon pay-per-view in December 2006.[61] After a
direct intervention by WWE owner Vince McMahon, Birch was released, and credits this with him beating his addictions.[61]
[edit] In wrestling
Adam Birch wouldn't be a bad ring name if the plan is to leave the "Joey Mercury" rockstar persona behind as part of the angle. It would be
interesting to see what role John Morrison would play in the angle if this was the was the wwe went with the story.
Considering Joey has been retired and beat his demons, I don't know if going back on the road is necessarily the best idea. He is only 30 yrs
old though and needs to do something with the rest of his life. Hopefully he'll have the support he'll need.

Didn't he reappear and wrestle a match or two at some point after he was originally released following the facial injury? Or am I
hallucinating?

Yeah, I want to say he had a cup of coffee on Smackdown as a solo guy before he was released but it was really a blink and you missed it kind of thing

He took time off after MNM broke up following losing the tag titles to London & Kendrick. Then he showed up again as Nitro's partner and
that's when they had that feud with the Hardys. After that face-breaking ladder shot at Armageddon, MNM wrestled together a good two months
(maybe even more) before Mercury was released. If you meant that you were wondering if he appeared on TV after that release, I don't think he
did, no.

I thought he got fired because he jumped over a table during a creative meeting and assaulted Stephanie?

That is one hell of a statement...and I'm even one of the biggest Jannetty fans on the planet...but I can't support any statement that
calls them the better workers than HBK and Morrison, especially with their respective resumes.

I should have included the "at the time they were teaming up" qualifier. Michaels and Morrison were the flash, but Jannetty and Mercury were the
solid workers of the respective teams. It comes down to "it" factor, because Matt Hardy was the better worker, but Jeff was the breakout star.

Please tell me he had a throbbing hard-on in his hand and was repeatedly yelling out "titties! titties!" when he did this.

Making comments like that are final confirmation that listening to too much Dice Clay perverted my entire sense of humour. I say this because this is
now the way I think pretty much all of the time.
I should have been more specific though. I sincerely hope that it was his own pulsating throbber that Joey was holding on to when he jumped Steph
because if you re-read my original comment it can be interpreted that he might have been holding on to someone else's.
Of course when your boss looks like this the temptation to jump her during a meeting shoots up by about 1000%:
I'd risk a firing, or take a severe beating from Hunter, if there was a possibility of a happy payoff.

Incorrect. He came back wearing a protective mask and attacked Morrison with it. I think they feuded for a bit after that.

The face injury was at Armageddon in December 2006, right? I don't remember when Mercury attacked Nitro with the face mask, but I know MNM
teamed up at the Royal Rumble and No Way Out in 2007.

From Wiki:
[Quote]
After missing a few weeks, Mercury returned wearing a protective face mask and his injury was worked into the angle, with both he and Nitro attempting
to injure the Hardys in various ways for revenge. MNM lost to The Hardys at the Royal Rumble, and again at the No Way Out pay-per-view in February
which concluded the feud.[41][42] He also wrestled in singles competition on SmackDown! until he was released from his WWE contract on March 26,
2007.
I could have sworn he attacked Morrison but I guess it was the Hardyz. My bad.

They should team Mercury up with Curt Hawkins and have a whole stable in NWT. I forget what Baretta/Croft/Hawkins were called in FCW but that was
entertaining.

I saw him work an lot in OVW and he was actually pretty good. He wasn't (and I'm sure still isn't) great, but he could work a
crowd as a heel.
While he isn't a bad addition, I'm not sure what he brings to the table that other workers couldn't.
