The Beer Thread - What are you drinking?
We make fun of fruiting beer in various RAW threads.
And we make mention of beer in "Who Wants to Stay Up All Night Drinking"
But we don't have a place to just talk about beer and hopefully in the process get some decent recommendations out there for folks to go give a
try.
So here goes.
I've been trying to resist making the transition from summer beers to fall ones. But summer was short here, and it's in the 60's
and feels very fall-y, so I'm starting to make the switch to fall beers.
Pumpkin beer is something you either like or don't. I happen to be mostly ok with it - have had some good ones and some not so good. It
started becoming available in mainstream and speciality beer stores here in the past few weeks, so finally bought a bunch.
Up until about ~5 years ago, Buffalo Bill's Pumpkin Ale had been a good standby. But they went and monkeyed with the formula and made it super
carbonated - you take one sip and now matter how gently you do it, it fizzes over and makes a big mess and wastes a bunch of beer. I buy 1-2 six
packs every year, but I don't enjoy it like I used to.
Right now I'm drinking my first Elysian Night Owl Pumkin Ale and liking it a lot.
Elysian is a Seattle-based brewery and I'm not sure how wide their distribution is. Certainly pacific northwest but don't know how far
south or east they go. If you like pumpkin ales, are interested in trying one, and it's available...this one is worth a taste. Available in 22
oz bottles...where available.
I've got a few other new (to me) ones in the fridge including a 4-pack of Dogfish Head Punkin Ale, plus Southern Tier Pumking Imperial Pumpkin
Ale, which is 9% ABV and scares me....which I'll talk about shortly.
So what are YOU drinking?

Coincidently, I'm also drinking a pumpkin ale at this very moment. It's the first one I've ever had and it's delicious.
It's Southampton Publick House Pumpkin Ale. Worth noting- I know that as a general
rule, nice beers are meant to be drank out of the bottle. They usually taste better if you more them in a mug and let a little more air get to them
and let the stuff that settles at the bottom of the bottle mix in. I have a freezable Steelers mug that I picked up at the Pro Football Hall of Fame
in Canton, OH, which is seriously the only place I've ever been to that I liked more than DisneyWorld, that I keep in the freezer for when I
want to have a nice beer. Anyway, I tried one of these in the bottle and then I poured the second bottle into my mug- and I liked how it tasted in the
bottle better. So that's odd, I think. But it was really good both ways
ETA- I also have a shitload of Sam Adams' Octoberfest stocked up in the fridge. It's generally my fall brew of choice

College football Saturdays are always traditionally Sam Adams Octoberfest. Best widely available bottled stuff out there.
Now if I'm at a bar for the games instead, it'll depend. Partial to bitters, but usually I won't be at a place with good microbrew
so I'll end up with Guinness or Molson instead.

I'm assuming you meant 'aren't meant to be drank from the bottle'?
At the moment I'm enjoying my post-match Little Creatures Pale Ale. Local brewery here thats been making waves for a few years and may even be
available in specialty beers stores over your way. Really hop-driven bitter pale ale, delicious.

Octoberfest isn't bad... but it's a bummer because all the stores around only have that now instead of Summer Ale, which I love. I have
seen a Sam Adams one called Coastal Wheat that I keep meaning to pick up and try, though.

I like darker, thicker beers. My current faves are Old Rasputin Imperial Stout and Belhaven Scottish Ale. Very tasty, and they're great on
cold days. I've seen Belhaven on tap maybe twice, and never for Rasputin. Any bar that had both would be home.

A grocery store chain here had a 30-pack of Gennesee for $12.75 the other week and I just couldn't say no. It's really not a bad beer for
that price. I believe Gennesee is based up north? I kinda thought of it as the northern version of Pabst Blue Ribbon - easily drinkable but
definitely not the gourmet of beers.
I also enjoyed a Sam Adams Octoberfest for my birthday yesterday. And many, many Miller Lite's.

That confused me, too. I dislike frozen glasses, you can't taste the beer as well with your tongue all frozen.
I love pumpkin ale. There was a microbrew by me that had the best I've ever tasted, but it's closed. So far, dogfish head is the second
best in my opinion, but now I've got to try Elesian, Tex.
In the summer I like the extra pale like Stella or even Rolling Rock. And now I'm blanking on the ale I had out of Missouri that was out of this
world. I'll recognize it when I get back to the liquor store.
I can't get into stouts, for some reason. Too heavy and sweet, or something. I just don't have enough hair on my sack to handle those.

Docb, give Boddington's a try. It has the rich creamy consistency of a stout, but it's lighter and more like an ale in taste. I really
love a Boddington's with Indian food, because it has a way of counteracting all the food's flavors, but I also enjoy it on its own later
in the evening as a nice full drink.
I just re-found an old favorite in Maudite last night. I used to really love Maudite (and really a lot of what Unibroue out of Montreal makes) about
12 years ago and I'd sort of lost track of that beer during the poverty of grad school. But last night I had a big bottle of it and loved the
flavor and level of carbonation all over again. I think it's technically a red ale.
I've been more of a cocktail guy than a beer drinker for the last few years, but North Carolina's liquor laws and Charlotte's
current trend towards craft brews are sliding me back towards beer. There's a new place that opened up down the street from my apartment
that's serving stuff out of a cask and has a really nice selection both in bottles and on tap, so that doesn't hurt either. I also think
that beer cocktails are on the verge of happening as a trend in the drinking world. Before I let New York there were a few places that were doing some
really interesting stuff mixing beer and liquor.
Finally, the current issue of Imbibe magazine (I'm enough of a cocktail nerd to subscribe to a magazine all about drinking) has a really nice
guide to beer, broken up by season. It's worth having a look and FWIW Elysian Night Owl Pumkin Ale gets an endorsement.

As a fellow Charlotte resident, which place are you referring to?
And I'll just go ahead and ruin this thread by saying I'm a cheap beer drinker. Pabst is generally my beer of choice, both because
it's inexpensive and I don't really mind the taste. When I'm at the store, I can just never bring myself to spend $12 on a twelve
pack of good stuff when I can get a case of the cheap stuff for the same amount.
Though if I had to pick an expensive/foreign beer, I do like Sapporo. I kind of have a tradition on New Years where I kick the festivities off with a
24-ounce can of it.

Oh man, Boddington's. The one time I ever had that was seven years ago at my friends birthday party. We were at Dave and Busters, and they
must have had a surplus of it or something, because I remember they were pushing it and it was pretty cheap. I drank a ton of them, and then we went
down the street and sang karaoke and drank some Miller Lite... my friends found me at the end of the night in the bathroom, blacked out and leaning
over the toilet bowl.

I'm the same... and it seems like beer prices in my area have shot up like crazy in the past couple months. I go to the grocery store and a six
pack goes for like, eight or nine bucks. I usually just go to Rite-Aid because they have decent deals... I got a 12-pack of Rolling Rock earlier for
$10.

What about "What are you NOT drinking?"
I had one of the worst hangovers of my life off of Miller High Life in college and haven't been able to drink it since. "Champagne of beers,"
my ass.
Though The Simpson got a great gag off of that line with "Duff Champagne - The Beer of Champagne."
And I'm sorry Punker but Rolling Rock has never been one of my favorites. Not sure what it is, but the flavor just doesn't do it for
me.
I'm also not a fan of Coors Light. It's like drinking water. Though I do enjoy Coors Original.

Goon, the place is Growler's on N. Davidson at 35th St. It's like three weeks old and they have some good sausages in addition to the
beer. They're also trying to do oysters, but they weren't that great when I had them-- but they do rotate that menu pretty regularly it
seems, so I have high hopes that they'll get better in that area.
Re: cost of beer. If you have a Trader Joe's near where you live, their in-house stuff is pretty good, and a lot cheaper than other brands. I
think a six-pack goes for >$6, and its a measured improvement over BudLight.
Re: cheap beer. I used to love Rolling Rock back when I was in my early 20s. It was just light enough and had a bit of a punk edge some how that it
fit my sense of self at the time. I'll still have one occasionally in the right context, but it's tended to taste skunkier to me each
time. I like PBR more than I should maybe. It's what I call my "grading beer", because it's refreshing and light on the alcohol, it
works really well as a break between stacks of student papers and/or exams. Anything stronger makes you resent your students and that's not a
good thing. When I lived in NYC there was a place not far from me that does a half dozen oysters and a PBR for $8, which was not only a bargain, but
also delicious. I'd often go in and have a few of those for dinner. It's also a favorite at Rockabilly shows, so I'll crack a half
dozen or so of those there, too.
Re: things I won't drink: beer division. Corona. It tastes no worse than other things, but I hate the brand and their marketing so much that
I'll do my best to avoid it. If it's literally the only thing available, and there's no way to not drink it (like it would be
insulting to your host to refuse it), then I put it in a glass with some ice, half of a lime's juice, a dash of salt (or worcestershire), about
an ounce of tomato juice (or better yet Clamato) and a few splashes of hot sauce and make a michelada.
I know we've talked about micheladas elsewhere on these boards-- has anyone tried one? Given that we're getting into the last hot days of
the year, this is the time if you haven't. It really is a wonderful hot summer day's drink.

Yes! Love the Unibroue stuff, the Maudite is indeed a red ale and indeed delicious.
I'm eagerly awaiting summer starting here just so I have an excuse to buy a carton of the Ephemere. That stuff is pure gold on a 40 degree day.

One thing I will miss about Boston and hope to find in LA is 18-packs of Rolling Rock bottles for $10.50. RR is the lawnmower beer I like to keep
around and let mingle in the fridge when trying new styles of beer.
I'm currently looking for Big Sky's Moose Drool, which I tried while driving from Boston to LA -- it's a brown ale from Montana that
honestly tastes more like a Porter, but not as heavy, which I like. It's got a Left Hand Milk Stout consistency to it.

I hate pumpkin ale, but I did try a sip of the one from Elysian, and it was actually pretty good.
Drift: now that you're in LA, you need to try San Diego's Stone Brewery beers. Especially Arrogant Bastard. I'm not a fan of
darks, but that is one damn good beer.
drmuerto: I think Unibroue is my favorite brewery. I love all of their beers. Maudite, Tres Pistoles, and my favorite of theirs, Le Fin Du Monde.
I also had the same experience with Rolling Rock. It was my favorite cheap beer in my 20s, now I think it's skunk.
Tex: Dogfish IPA is a wonderful drink. Are you going to check out Oktoberfest in Fremont? It's Sept 23, 24, 25. They usually have a lot of
good local beers here for that. Always a good time.

90 Minute IPA is on my short list. That's the one with the 100 rating from some beer ranking thingie.
And no - skipping out on the Fremont Oktoberfeset. Went last year with kid in tow and got introduced to some stupid law about segregation of beer and

We're doing Oktoberfest right and going to Leavenworth the weekend of Oct 9th. Spending the night so can get rightfully blasted. And yes,

Well played, sir...well played. Given how much you apparently used to travel in your former line of work, I'm sure encountering/participating
in a little airport foot-tapping was a fairly common occurence.
I also wanted to give a shout to pretty much my top "can't go wrong" beers - Newcastle and Heineken. I rarely spring the money on these for
home consumption but if I'm out and about and feel like spending a little more than usual, I'll usually go with one of these two (unless
there are some more adventurous options available).
Also forgot to mention another mid-range beer I really like is Yeungling.

Went to Binny's, which is the best beer store around here for selection. Told the guy I couldn't find crown valley pilsner. He looked it
up and said well we only bought one case and all 4 six packs sold. To me! So he's ordering another case. I'm hoping he gives me a break
off the 6-pack price, we'll see.
They didn't have Elysian, and I didn't care terribly much for buffalo bills last fall, and I was feeling too cheap to spring for
Dogfishhead at $9.50 a 4 pack, so I bought Ichabod's. It's still in my trunk.
I also bought michelob porter and a 12 pack of rolling rock. Like Drift said, it's just a good beer to keep around. Better on hot days than a
heavy beer, or woodworking in the garage, and you can make the pricey beers last a little longer. And it was on sale for 8 bucks.
I've never cared for IPA. Too bitter. There's so many great pilsners, ales, and weisses that I just tend to avoid the types I've not
enjoyed in the past.
Though I did keep my eye open for Boddingtons and didn't see it. Next time I'm in there I'll ask for that and anything elysian.
