Some new 3DS news
Nintendo held a press conference in Japan today and officially announced the 3DS is coming out on February 26th, 2011 in Japan, with a March release
date for North America and Europe. It's going to cost 25,000 yen, which translates to about $300 in America.
Some other big news coming out of the press conference is that the 3DS is going to have it's own virtual console ala the Wii, which will feature
Gameboy, Gameboy Color, and Gameboy Advance games.
There were also a couple of new game announcements from Capcom, which were Resident Evil: The Mercenaries (which is a collection of the Mercenary
missions from Resident Evil 4 and 5, with some new content thrown in) and Mega Man Legends 3.
Personally, I think $300 is a little steep, but Nintendo has yet to officially announce the price for North America (there are some around the gaming
sites who are speculating it could still go for $250, but that could just be wishful thinking). But after seeing some of the additional things you can
do with the 3DS, I'm definitely more than sold, regardless of the price.

I'm a pretty big DS fan so I will be keeping an eye out on this 3DS as it gets closer to release here. While I agree that $300 dollars is pretty
steep, the DS is pretty much the undisputed king of mobile gaming and at least for me, an essential part of my life. I do a lot of travelling via
trains, buses, planes, so if I don't have my DS on me to whittle away the hours, my sanity level will get to a dangerous low. :/
Sign me up for a 3DS now. Maybe Gamestop will have some kinda turn in offer and I can sell off my two old DS's for a cheaper 3DS.

Paying $300 for a console is still a dent to a bank account, so $300 for a handheld doesn't excite me. This is coming from the guy who's
only ever had Link avatars.
I think $250 would be fair, and honestly, Nintendo's gotta keep the pack-ins coming. That's what adds instant value to a price tag for any
console/handheld purchase. Because when I read "$300,"
what I see is "$300 + 9% sales tax + $40 game = damn close to $375." Now if they wanted to include a free Virtual Console download or a packed-in
game, even, I'd be more apt to pay $300.
Here's hoping it's actually $250. I feel like we never end up paying quite what Japan pays after converting from Japanese yen.
Either way, I'll buy it, of course. And that's what Nintendo does best. Enslaves fanboys who will pay regardless. They could tell me
it's only going to play remakes and I'd buy it. Stupid fandom.

Right there with you my friend.
And while I think Nintendo gets it right with pricing their consoles 95% of the time, I will be disappointed if $300 is the official North American
price. It does seem a little steep for a handheld, but I guess the fact that it comes with two cameras and whatever 3D technology it utilizes may be
what jacks up the price.
Either way though, yeah...I'm still buying one. The footage I've seen of Metal Gear Solid 3 looks really damn good, can't wait to
actually be able to see that one in 3D.

I'm on the fence. On the one hand, I totally want one and have gotten every Nintendo system since the Gameboy Advance on launch day. On the
other hand, I just don't know if I want to deal with the craziness of trying to score one on launch day and am thinking maybe I'll just
wait this one out. I'll see how I feel in two months I guess.

Yeah I'd love to have one, but like Tex, I'll end up waiting a while. I usually like to wait a little while after launch for more games
to come out, and for the price drop. Plus, trying to find a system at launch is usually never worth it... maybe it's a little easier for
handheld systems, but the past few times I've tried to get a system the day it came out, it was a fucking nightmare.
Is everyone mad here?

Word. Especially since you know in another 6-9 months there'll be a 3DS XL or a 3DS Special Edition. That's how Nintendo rolls. On the
other hand, unless you want to wait until 2012, definitely try to get one before the holidays roll around because you know what a Mongolian
clusterfuck trying to get one will be after the middle of October.
Anyone who does want one at launch but is worried about dropping the money all at once should know that Gamestop is taking preorders with a $50
deposit that comes out of the cost of the machine and you can keep making payments on it a la layaway between now and the time it comes out, so
that's an option.

That's how I bought the original DS in 2004. I had it all paid for by the time I actually went to pick it up from GS and it was the best
feeling.
I'll be getting it at launch, fully knowing I'll be buying the 3DS Lite next year, and then the 3DS Lite XL the next year, and the 3DS
Lite XL Mini in 2013. I actually am OK with being an early adopter, as my room is basically a Nintendo museum anyway. I'll be interested to see
how they improve upon the original model, since it already looks sleek as it is and it basically where the DSi is in terms of appearance and
efficiency. Then again, I think we all thought the DS Phat looked cool at first too.

That's what I'm thinking and is why I wouldn't mind getting one at launch. I don't kid myself that there won't be
improved models released down the line, since this is Nintendo we're talking about (I can already picture a new 3DS being released a year
or two from now touting "New Improved 3D!" or something), but after four freaking DS models, I have to assume that the 3DS is going to be pretty
sweet.

Yeah, I feel like the hardware of the original DS was an afterthought compared to the technology. I think they knew they'd be able to redesign
it if it sold well, and if not, they didn't need to make the sleekest, most efficient model at the time. Knowing that the DS brand and system
itself are a proven commodity as a selling unit, I imagine the general design of the DSi, which the 3DS seems to emulate, truly is paramount. Maybe
they'll add a better screen or battery life, like they did with the multiple versions of the GBA SP. The other side of this coin of course is
the fact that Nintendo knows guys like Goon and I can and probably will by all iterations of every system. Twice. Cause they can and cause we can.

I'm about to exchange my two DS (my wife found one years ago at a movie theatre) in hopes of cushioning the blow of a new console. We're
trying to save up for a trip to Japan later this year so we'll probably have to end up sharing the damn thing for now (which has never gone well
for us).
While I agree that trying to get it on launch day (or close to) is going to be a nightmare, as was said above, I don't even want to IMAGINE how
much of a nightmare it'll be during the later half of the year when people are thinking about the holidays. Knowing my luck, some crazy Mario
game will come out that every damn person wants.

So they're taking preorders for the 3DS on Best Buy's website and I'm thinking of doing that just to cut out the middleman of trying
to find one in-store somewhere. My question is does anyone have experience preodering something off of a website like this? They have the estimated
arrival time as being between March 27th and April 1st. If this holds true, I'll probably go ahead and preorder one, but I'm just paranoid
about putting down $250 and then not receiving my 3DS for two or three months due to limited quantities or something.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, but I do always like having paper in hand and being there day of. Maybe it's all the midnight launches
I've been to, or the sneaky connections I had to get to rush to a Gamestop four years ago to get one of three Wii systems available for that
month, but I always like showing up to the store. Gives me peace of mind, too, just in case online orders are backed up.

Well, I went ahead and bit the bullet. My 3DS is preordered as of right now, mainly because I saw on the Best Buy website that I can do in-store pick
up on launch day. Now the fun part is waiting until March 27th, which will probably take forever to get here.

Just thought I'd pull this thread back up because Nintendo has commented about any 3DS re-releases. Pulled from Nintendo Life:
Ever since before the 3DS was officially unveiled, gamers claimed they would wait until the so-called "inevitable" revision that has accompanied
all Nintendo's portable hardware over the years: you need only look at the number of iterations of the original GameBoy, GameBoy Advance and
Nintendo DS consoles to realise the 3DS won't always look as we know it now. Nintendo doesn't want you to get your hopes up just yet
though, as it has no short-term plans for a slimmer, lighter model.
In the latest Iwata Asks the Nintendo President chats with hardware designer Kenichi Sugino, who reveals the currently 3DS hardware uses all the
space-saving tricks learnt from the DS Lite to make it as tiny as possible.
That's why we don't have any short-term plans for creating a more compact version of Nintendo 3DS like we did with Nintendo DS
Lite.
Nobuo Nagai, Nintendo's senior director of its manufacturing division, is similarly adamant:
This time it's fully packed right from the start.
Naturally, as Nintendo's research and development division continues to investigate newer technologies it'll become possible to make the
machine smaller, the screens bigger and introduce new features, but for now it seems Nintendo is pretty happy with the console's stature.
I do like that "This time it's fully packed right from the start" comment, though I know I'm kidding myself to think there won't
be a revised 3DS at some point. But I do feel pretty safe with getting my 3DS on launch day without regretting it whenever the inevitable newer
edition comes out (unless it's released in 4D or something).

I've officially reserved my blue 3DS as of yesterday at the Gamestop by the Boston Common. I put $75 toward it for now and plan to put $50 a
week toward it so I can just pick it and Pilotwings/Kittendos or whatever else is out at the time and have most of it paid for. I'll throw my
friend code in my siggy and in this thread, if it becomes a catch-all for 3DS news (does the OP of a thread have the ability to rename the thread?).

Thought I'd drag this thread back up, as the launch day titles for North America have been announced:
Pilotwings Resort
Steel Diver
nintendogs + cats
Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition
The Sims 3
Madden NFL Football
Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D
LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars
Ridge Racer 3D
Super Monkey Ball 3D
Bust-a-Move Universe
Samurai Warriors: Chronicles
Asphalt 3D
Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D
Rayman 3D
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Shadow Wars
Pretty decent lineup I guess, but Pilotwings and Street Fighter are the only two I'll really want on launch day. I'd be kind of interested
in Madden, but don't think I can justify spending $40 on it when I already have the Wii version.
And no Zelda or Kid Icarus is a little disappointing, but this is Nintendo, so I guess it's not too shocking they didn't make the launch
date.

So I got to try out the 3DS today at Best Buy (I played Pilotwings) and walked away pretty impressed. The 3D is kind of different than I thought it
would be...it's sort of hard to explain, but someone over on the Gamefaqs forums summed it up pretty nicely by saying it's more like you
can reach into the game, rather than it popping out at you.
My only minor complaint is that the graphics did get a little blurry if I moved the system around, but then again I was playing it while standing up
in Best Buy on a 3DS that was connected to the kiosk. I figure when I play at home while laying in bed, this won't be as much of an issue (plus
you can always adjust the level of the 3D or just turn it off).

Thanks for sharing, goon. I had a friend who hit PAX East (while I moved my sorry ass into Somerville here) and he also said if you move the system
around, it'll get blurry. Hmm. That doesn't bode well for commuters or all the chillins who are gonna insist on playing in the car.
Nonetheless, I have my 3DS all paid for and can't wait until the 27th! My username, if they have one, will probably be DriftThroughTime

At this point, I think we should just rename this thread "the goon and DriftThroughTime's Nintendo 3DS fanboy orgy."
And I agree that the blurriness is a little worrisome, but on the flipside, you can always turn the 3D off (or just lower it). While the effect is
cool, I think most 3DS games will still be enjoyable without the 3D.

Four days into my 3DS ownership and I can happily say that Nintendo has impressed me with another hardware launch.
I picked up my 3DS Saturday night/Sunday morning a bit after midnight at Park Street in Boston (Boston Common) at Gamestop. I knew the Prudential
Gamestop would be packed (albeit, indoors), so I didn't bother with my reservation there. I brought my friend Chad, a longtime Nintendo fanboy
and grade school friend who had been there for the Wii launch, the DS and DS Lite launches, so on and so forth. He didn't reserve one though, as
he was a bit skeptical. We drove and parked at the Boston Common, since I didn't want to risk missing the last T (subway) back.
I got Pilotwings and Super Street Fighter IV with my 3DS and scurried back through the cold to my car. We tested Pilotwings and the camera for about
10 minutes, at which point Chad goes, "Fuck." Let's go back." So I drive out of the parking garage, circle over to the Gamestop, drop him
off, aaaand they're closed. So I drive him back, during which he's jamming on Face Raiders (built in), Pilotwings, Street Fighter, and the
Mii Creator. He gets home, says "I'll trade in my Lite sometime this week," and that's that. Ten hours later, Sunday morning, I'm
playing with the 3DS with friends at brunch and he calls, says he got his already.
This thing is really impressing people, both fanboys and casual players, when they see it - and this is what Nintendo does so well. They blow people
away at launch (see: Nintendo Wii). I showed two of my friends the thing at brunch Sunday morning, one casual gaming girl (who's currently
borrowing my DS Lite and Pokemon, so I don't know how casual that is) and one mostly non-gamer and they were impressed. I showed it to some of
my gaming friends on Monday and co-workers who had heard I bought it and they were impressed too. And that's what Nintendo goes for - roping in
the casual/non-gamer demographic.
The 3-D effects are really well-done, despite rumors otherwise. The 3-D slider adjusts the angle of the parallax screens, from what I can tell, to
adjust for a) the distance between your eyes and b) how far the screen is from your face. As others have mentioned, the 3-D effect creates depth in
the screen rather than popping out, and it's a bit hard to explain, but it works a lot better than I was expecting. Not to do addition by
subtraction, but these matter too: I haven't had any headaches, vision impairment or nausea. And I've played for about an hour at a time,
which is probably the most time at any given point any player will actually/should actually be engaged with the machine. Most importantly regarding
the 3-D, it's actually not gimmicky at all. If it bothers you, you can adjust it to 2-D, and that's that.
Out of the box, the 3DS comes with a few neat built in apps that makes me feel like Nintendo finally remembered how to launch a system (Wii coming
with Wii Sports initially was cool, but I wanted two remotes in the bundle, especially since Wiimotes were impossible to find for months after
launch). The 3D camera works reasonably well, allowing you to take photos with a forward-facing camera and a camera on the inner hinge to take photos
of yourself. You can then, if you wish, use the stylus, which is substantial and telescoping, to play with your photos Mario Paint-ish effects - in
fact, one of the "erase all" functions recalls one of the canvas-clearing animations from Mario Paint. And I've been testing this out
meticulously in moving environments - once you find the sweet spot of distance and 3DS height relative to your eyes, you're good, but little
starts and stops on the T and shifts in weight can mess you up. But I've been playing Pilotwings, which requires some steady hands and focus,
with minimal interruption.
The camera hardware itself is used in most of the other built in apps, too. Face Raiders has you take a photo of a face, any face, and populates
floating aliens that appear through the camera onto the screen in your environment. Your job is to protect yourself to shoot them down. So I snap a
picture of Nellie, my cat peacefully perched on my bed, and go to town shooting tennis ball-esque objects at Nellie Martians beeping and growling, all
while pivoting on my heels and turning the 3DS to take down imaginary cat-monsters flying at me. Lots of fun for a quick distraction and definitely
hilarious when watching someone else play - that I will get to momentarily.
The AR cards also use the camera, and quite well, I might add. This is another app to bust out to your casual gaming friends and it's the one my
friends tend to be checking out the most. The system comes with six AR (augmented reality) cards with iconic Nintendo images embossed - Mario, Link,
the question block, and so on. Lay a card on a flat surface, boot up the AR Card app, point the 3DS toward the card for the camera to recognize and
the 3DS begins warping the image on your screen. Suddenly, you're shooting at targets attached to mountains that have erupted from your desktop,
fishing in a virtual lake over your keyboard, and shooting at a dragon emerging from a chasm in your countertop. This is the one my non-gaming friend
Jackie tried at brunch, and needless to say, people from the other tables who heard "Oh god! It's gonna get me! It just burst through the
table!" either thought she's on something or that's totally what she said. The friends I work with were also impressed with
this, and I think part of it is the technical marvel of it and part of it is the surprise in seeing something that they've never really
experienced before.
The Mii creator is back, but this time it will also allow you to take a picture and attempts to create the Mii for you first, providing you with about
10 suggestions for a template based on your photo. It actually made a good one for me, but it can take a few attempts, based on lighting, angle,
etc.
The general wireless function seems to be created to address concerns of too many friend codes and no visibility to your friends' activity. Once
you swap friend codes, that's it. Just the system code. No more for games. And if your friends are online, you can see them online. So far, I
haven't figured out if you can message them though. Either I haven't looked enough, or there's a serious oversight here that needs
to be addressed in an update. This is where Pictochat could actually be...useful? Somewhat interesting? The wireless also allows you to close the
hinge and put the 3DS into sleep mode, which allows you to (if you setup and choose so) send a copy of your Mii(s) to any other 3DS owners who also
have this feature, called StreetPass, set up. It's pretty nifty - it picked up on my friend's Mii as I went to meet him at a bar last
night, and I found someone rando's from the red line today. This also allows you to play a few really basic minigames in the Mii Plaza, but I
haven't explored that much, so I won't get into it much. But you can earn clothing and props to deck out your Mii so when other people get
it via StreetPass, it's rockin' a Luigi hat or something.
The battery! The hot-button issue. Well, I have the brightness set to 3 of 5 and I keep the wireless on when the system is asleep and StreetPass is
activated or when I'm actually playing using wireless, but so far, I've only needed to charge my battery twice. I ran it down nearly all
the way in about five hours of play combined with a 24-hour period of sleep mode/StreetPass so I could calibrate it. I have a charger at work, which
came with the system, and my DSi charger at home, which is the same thing, so I'm not worried about the battery life. Do I wish it could last
longer? Yes. Has it emerged as a big issue so far? Nope! Could it? I'll let it be known if it does.
The titles so far look...like launch titles. These are games we'll see knocked down from $40 to $15 in a year's time, but Pilotwings will
be a nice classic to pick up on the cheap in about six months or so, and SSFIV will probably be a perennial favorite. I haven't played with much
else, but I'll report in when I do - any review requests? Send them my way. I wouldn't say that there's a game that necessitates the
purchase of the 3DS yet, so this is a device for people who think/know it has promise for future titles, who like what they see so far, and who like
the technology.
So far, it's provided me a myriad of gaming experiences that can be accessed on the fly - I can switch from Pilotwings to the AR Card games to
making a co-worker's Mii to adding a new friend without rebooting, which I love. A lot of these little features add up - software suspending,
which allows you to stop a game, to the home menu (dashboard) and adjust the brightness, then resume, is a good example of this. I like that I can be
totally beating through chumps with Ryu one minute and then derping around with little undiscovered features like the pedometers coin rewards and with
the camera's painting features.
The next several months are going to be interesting for the 3DS and its owners. I think, like anything Nintendo creates/touches, it'll print
money just fine. I think it'll be fun for a long time. But then I think about my poor, as-of-recent neglected Wii, and hope that the 3DS has a
good while before it becomes gimmicky and its marketing oversaturated with shovelware.
Goon and anyone else who got one - what are your thoughts so far?
