Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Didn't care when I heard about it, and James Franco is an off choice for a scientist, but damn that trailer looks good.

I've never really been a fan of the "Apes" series, but the trailer does look kinda interesting. So is this supposed to tie into any of the
other movies or is it basically just a reboot for the franchise?

Full reboot with some homage to the original canon, and hopefully a success in making the universe forget about that Tim Burton atrocity from about
eight years ago.

I'm a big fan of the original planet of the apes series, but I loathed the Burton version. This one looks like an interesting take on things.

So I guess this one will be a "prequel" of sorts that will show how the apes came to power and took over the world? I'm already prepared to
mark out during the inevitable "destruction of the Statue Of Liberty" scene.
And I agree, when I first heard that another Planet of the Apes movie was coming out, my first thought was "Really?!" (mainly due to still having a
bad taste in my mouth after Tim Burton's movie). But damn, that trailer does look pretty awesome.

The wwtdd article about this had a good line. "They become brilliant, bulletproof apes. Wait, they're not bulletproof? What's the
problem?"
I wonder if we're going to see the Apes arm themselves. Or even better, motherfucking apes on a motherfucking plane.

I don't know if its a brand new trailer or not, but the one on X-men I just saw did have the apes wielding spears and other crude weapons. I
suppose they could escalate it to using guns and whatnot, but I think the main selling point will be being stronger, faster, and more savage than us
human folk.
Its been a long time since I saw the originals, but did they use guns in any of them?
The apes are going to have to continue to evolve as they either have to cook up more brain enhancing goo, or after they wipe out the humans get busy
on gettin' busy cause there can't be that many apes/chimps/monkey's in one lab....

Yes, they used guns in the originals. Taylor/Charleton Heston gets shot in the throat and can talk, leading up to the big "Damn Dirty Apes" line as
the first time the apes ever heard a human speak

Anybody else seen this?
I saw it last night and really, really enjoyed it. HUGE step up from the shitty remake with Wahlberg.
I really liked how it's almost two movies in one - It starts kinda light-hearted when Franco adopts Caesar (the ultra-smart offspring of a
monkey they used experimental intelligence-boosting drugs on) and Caesar is a cute baby monkey who flips around the house and lives his little
intelligent monkey life.
Then...things CHANGE.
Not to go into spoilers (unless others have seen it and want to discuss the movie with spoilers included) Caesar, um, misbehaves and finds himself in
animal control lockup. He's now forced to interact with his fellow simians, all while getting mistreated by humans (of course in these types of
movies there's always got to be the asshole who works with the animals and enjoys abusing them). Some of those scenes are actually pretty hard
to watch but they give a convincing reason for Caesar to turn against the human race and join up with his simian brothers.
Andy Serkis is absolutely amazing as Caesar. As I read in one review of the movie, it's a damn shame that he won't get nominated for an
Oscar.
There's also a really fun nod to the original Planet Of The Apes for anyone who's watching closely enough.

I saw this one too and was very impressed.
I think it helped that I went into it thinking of it as just popcorn fare and that the whole movie was probably in the previews, and it kind of was,
but at the same time it went a lot deeper into the characters, and kept the story really rolling. I think it treated its audience maturely and left us
to make up our minds about issues like animal testing and so forth, which I think really helped it not fall prey to a kind of preachy - go home with
this message kind of vibe that would have ruined it.
While a complete movie in and of itself, I think it also beautifully sets the stage for the franchise.

Yes, even though it pretty much wraps up how things went from our world to the Heston "Planet Of The Apes" world during the closing credits, I would
be all for a sequel to flesh it out further. And to hopefully follow the further adventures of Caesar. I haven't been pulled that much into a
CGI character since Serkis's other masterpiece, Gollum.

He recently (like last year?) did a movie with Simon Pegg called "Burke and Hare" with was entertaining and worth checking out simply to see him
actually acting in the flesh.
I can't remember the name of the second chimp (the one that had extensive medical testing), but I found that there was already a subtle
opposotion between the two of them... perhaps a way for Caesar to remain a bit more human friendly in a sequel, but still give the movie a villain?

Yeah, I liked that chimp that had been experimented on over and over and just looked evil.
And I was marking out for the gorilla kicking ass and taking names during the chimp rampage.
And I like your idea for a basis for the sequel. Here would be one one issue with the sequel and it relates to how they wrapped it up in the credits
-
SPOILERS!!!!
I think the coolest story to be told is anything involving humans vs. apes and, if all the humans died of the ALZ-113 virus in a fairly short amount
of time, there is no further story there to be told. It would have to be ape vs. ape or maybe something about the few human survivors vs. the apes
(which would likely lead back to the humans being the sympathetic side and the apes as the evil side).

I really liked the movie a lot. I can say that it was my favorite of this summer season and it did take away a lot of the bad feelings that remained
from the Marky Mark version. In defense of that movie it would have been at least decent/passable had they not tacked on the "twist" ending that
made no sense at all. This one served as great prequel to the original series and I for one would love to see a sequel.
SPOILERS/Reconciling Plots
I think the events of this movie happen in the original time line for the Ape Universe that until now we didn't know too much about. As noted in
this movie Taylor and his crew launch and are lost. From this point on they exist outside of time in stasis/deep sleep while the earth continues to
move forward. That means any sequels that they want to do to 'Rise' can still fit into the cannon of the original apes movies. We can
follow this Caesar and his people up until the point that ape society is firmly established and the humans have collapsed due to the fallout from
their virus and nuclear war. At some point before the total collapse of human society, the second ship that went looking for Taylor would also need to
be mentioned, but other than that they could keep a close continuity with the original no matter what direction they want to take this current
story.
At some point Taylor's crew and the astronaut (sp?) sent to find them would land. This is depicted in the first two original movies. In the
third movie 'Escape from the Planet of the Apes', Corneilus (sp?) and Zira(sp?) go back in to our past. They appear before the events of
'Rise' and screw up the time line. So the new Caesar that we just watched won't exist. Instead the offspring of Corneilus and Zira
becomes the ape leader as depicted in 'Conquest' and 'Battle'. He is also named Caesar and I guess in a time paradox he
becomes his own grandpa or something like that.
I've never really watched the two tv series so I have no idea how they could possibly fit in, but the Marky Mark one should just be disregarded.
