OOfficial Ratings/Discussion Thread for: SmackDown (August 12, 2011)

OO Nation: All discussion pertaining to SmackDown (airing August 12, 2011) should be done in this thread. It will remain pinned at the top of the Current Events section for the remainder of the week. In discussing the program, we'd love it if you shared your numerical rating for the show (from a low of 0.0 to a high of 5.0, in any increment of one-tenth of a point). For full details on the ratings scale and how to join in on this informal "Battle of the Brands," please be sure to check out the OOfficial Guidelines for TV Ratings/Discussion Threads.

Tonight on SmackDown: on the eve of SummerSlam, WWE's not gonna do a whole lot to screw up the vibe they've got going, and presents a show that's pleasantly heavy on the wrestling, even if it's a bit shy on the storyline sizzle.... to that end, Christian's vague promise of a Major Announcement (made on RAW) isn't something you should be hanging your hat on for tonight's show; unless his big swerve is something that WWE taped backstage and inserted into the broadcast after the tapings, his "Major Announcement" is nothing more than standard heel blustering done during a show-opening promo conducted by Triple H...

In said promo, HHH basically set up the format for the rest of the wrestling-heavy show (a throwback to the old "Clipboard RAWs" where the authority figure takes 10 minutes at the start of the show to tell you what's happening tonight, and then you sit back and watch them deliver).... both the champ and #1 contender for Sunday's PPV match were placed into hand-picked matches by HHH: Christian gets to face Sheamus, while Randall Orton gets Khali... in addition, the IC Champ will put his title on the line right here, tonight, as Zeke Jackson defends against Cody Rhodes... HHH's final decreed match sees him invite Alberto del Rio over from RAW so that we can enjoy "Mr. MitB" vs. "Mr. MitB," as del Rio squares off against Daniel Bryan, with bragging rights over who has the best briefcase on the line...

And rounding out the show: a depleted Team Sweet Sweet Ass (now down to just Kaitlyn and AJ) will take on the newly formed alliance of Team Sweet Badass (Beth Phoenix and Natalya)... Johnny Curtis will make his not-awaited debut in futile fashion: by being fed to Mark Henry... and Sin Cara returns to action for the first time since being stretchered out of the MitB PPV; or does he? *duh duh DUUNNNNNNNNNN*

The flOOr is yours, OO Nation. Let your voice be heard and your thoughts on Brand Supremacy be known. Don't wait till after 10pm to post, either. Pre-show previewing and prognosticating is certainly welcome. So discuss, debate, and rate!

Booker's "Fave Five" is one of my favorite parts of WWE right now.

EDIT - Also, does anyone feel bad for people that bought those shitty "Corre" t-shirts, considering the group lasted all of five months? No? Carry on then.

How did the Nexus go from being something so awesome to having an 11-year-old laugh at them in such a short time?

I saw a meathead at my gym wearing a John Cena t-shirt a couple of weeks ago. All I could think was "yep."

Does anyone else also watch Smackdown on mute, like myself? Michael Cole ruins the show for me. I didn''t care to much for SD tonight. Nice to see the belt off of Zeke though. That dude just can't work

I'm in the vast minority here of not being usually being too annoyed by Cole (hell, I'd even say I enjoy his interactions with Booker and Josh on Smackdown), but I did think he was slightly more toned down this week, which is good. And don't get me wrong, I definitely get why he gets on everyone's nerves.

As for the show, I thought it was a decent, if pretty standard, go-home show for SummerSlam.

I liked the opening segment with Triple H and Christian and I enjoy their promo work together, as it feels pretty fresh. As long of those two have been in the WWE (minus Christian's TNA run), it's funny to think that they've probably had more TV time together in the last two weeks than they have in the last ten years.

Pretty good match between Christian and Sheamus, but I like some of their previous Smackdown matches better. Obviously neither guy was going to eat a pinfall, but I would have preferred Mark Henry interference or something rather than Christian just walking out, especially since Christian has beaten Sheamus clean twice in the past. Though I guess you can use the heel champion wanting to rest himself up before his big PPV match theory, which Cole stated.

I really, really like what they're doing with Beth and Natalya. I'd say this is the best thing they've done with the Divas division in a long time and if they can somehow stretch this out until Kharma comes back, that will be awesome.

I was distracted during the Sin Cara/Kidd match and didn't even realize it wasn't the usual guy underneath the mask until reading it on 411. Not sure how well that's gonna work. And even though he's basically jobbing, I do like Tyson Kidd getting TV time for I think the third week in a row now.

Del Rio/Bryan was decent but pretty quick. Bryan tapping clean was a tad surprising, but I see it as one of those things that will help Del Rio and not really hurt Bryan in the long run. And I'm loving the Bryan/Barrett feud and am glad they're getting a match at SummerSlam. Quick fantasy booking idea: Barrett somehow gets the MITB shot off of Bryan and goes on to win the world title down the road. Bryan then goes on to win the Royal Rumble or Elimination Chamber and still gets his WrestleMania title shot, setting up a final showdown against champion Barrett.

Really glad to see Cody get the IC title and hopefully he'll do good with it. It's kind of interesting that Zeke had been built up as a monster but now has jobbed out like three of the last four shows. Though that toss Dibiase took to the outside of the ring looked fucking brutal.

Mark Henry vs. Johnny Curtis...who gives a shit.

Orton/Khali was pretty lame, but what would you expect. Christian's post-match announcement was intriguing and I'm sticking with my theory that he's bringing in backup in the form of Miz and/or R-Truth at SummerSlam (since neither is on the card and have it in for Triple H).

Christian/Shaemus: That was the first I'd heard a crowd do a 10 count in a long time.

Nice double team by Natalya/Pheonix. Every so often, a squash is necessary. I'm hoping K2 loses the belt. A chase would do the division.

Is it me, or is Booker T just Mongo 2.0? I mean, he tries, but...I just can't dig it.

Del Rio *really* needed that win. And Wade Barrett's music is in dire need of a re-do.

Nice setup on the Henry locker room segment. Logical script, added with pre-match intimidating we rarely see.

The matches themselves? Meh. Even Bryan/del Rio wasn't much to write home about.

A squash by Nattie/Beth would make more sense if they had squashed 2 "pretty princesses". Kaitlyn is as big and strong as Beth and Nattie and AJ is never portrayed as a "pretty princess". The divas roster is filled with women who have spent the last few years in storylines based solely around their looks, and yet it's AJ/Kaitlyn that take the squash? I mean I get the point that right now they are as close to two face divas not named Kelly Kelly they have, but really that's because of poor planning...

Oh and Booker T needs to figure out what the hell he's doing on commentary. The face commentator cheering savage post match beatings on women is pretty reprehensible. It's sad when COLE is the reasonable commentator after a match...

Remember when he won the "Talk the Talk" challenge back in NXT Season 1, and his reward was that he would get his own entrance music, and they kept putting it off with an excuse along the lines of "we're fine tuning it to fit Wade Barrett's character", then nothing ever materialized out of it? Yeah. Me neither.

But I agree that Wade needs a new theme, and not just another remix of his current awful one.

The rest of the show..

Am I the only one who finds Natalya hot? I don't think she gets enough "she's hot"-praise around here.

Speaking of hot, it's amazing what a change of hair color can do. Case in point: Aksana. Being decked out in tight all-leather doesn't hurt either.

I mentioned it in the Spoiler thread, but I think Kidd having a bigman bodyguard/tag team partner would be a nice character hook for him, ala Shawn/Diesel. Brodus Clay would work. Didn't Kidd have a bodyguard once? Whatever happened to that guy?

Pairing Kidd with Clay wouldn't do anything but get Clay over, I fear. That guy is a pretty good promo and I think he'd end up living Kidd behind pretty quickly.

Although the obvious team name is fantastic.

Trying to pass Hunico off as Sin Cara will never work. If the wwe wanted to create a new Luchadore out of thin air why not put Bourne or Kidd under a mask? Because they wanted Mistico, they wanted the big star from Mexico to cater to Mexican fans. Mexican fans will know it's not Mistico and reject Sin Cara, especially if the idea is to sell Hunico like there was no switch.

However it seemed during the match that the announcers were setting up the idea that it was a different person under the mask, so we could be heading for an imposter storyline. Announcers would go on about how he looks bigger, how he was having trouble with his mask, how he was breaking out a whole bunch of new moves.

Hunico is a decent enough wrestler, but he isn't Mistico. Mistico is so much smoother in the ring, lighter on his feet and dynamic.

Every Raw & Smackdown will be the most exciting so I will open each with a promo!
HHH stealing ideas back from TNA and making them his own!
Ok, I think I mentioned how the idea of an "Unsafe working environment" would be a legal term Christian could hide behind but how could anyone not notice when writing the show that having a character express his fears only to be told to suck it up or he'll be fired in front of millions of witnesses is the quickest way to a seriously large settlement in the forthcoming lawsuit?

Oh, but that would interrupt the HHH is the badass COO story wouldn't it?

It would have made more sense to have Christian come out with that complaint, have HHH say his legal team have already heard about the suit and have a countersuit ready with a video package of all the TLC historical evidence from Christians history saying that He lead a culture of extreme and as a result of his actions one of the greatest WWE champions had to retire, and the other 4 members of that legacy havent been seen in years...

That plays to Christian and instead of the dual push roadblock of Sheamus you feed him someone who he can look like a champ against.
Now you close the show with Christian promo on Randy saying, you have no idea what I am capable of maybe even tease a ladder or one man con-chair-to.

Also did HHH just question how someone won the "big Gold Belt" without it being brought up the history of the "World Title"?

Other than that, others have said Sin Cara Dos made the top rope entrance cleaner but I thought he wasn't as fluid between moves as Uno though as it was his first time out there in that situation I thought Tyson and he had a nice match.

Don't get the desire to kill Jonny Curtis straight out of the gate but we'll see and the lack of Zack, other than the 12s he was on screen wasn't enjoyable.

I do hope Cody gets a chance to run with the IC and maybe a few anchor matches may make it a legit title again but really who is there on the face side for him to feud with who wouldn't need to step down (Sheamus) or re-hash the summer (Daniel, Sin Cara) ?
PS why wasn't this kept for the PPV?

Daniel really is ADRs bitch isn't he?

The current Aksana role was supposed to go to Maxine, but she breached some protocol or something and was bumped out of the spot. Maxine plays the GM of FCW, and would have been better for the role, but I guess a dye job is all the bookers really needed to swap Aksana in.

I wouldn't be surprised if Curtis is future endeavored. He was in developmental for near three years because while he has the size/look and is decent enough in the ring, he doesn't have "it" and the bookers can't see anything in him or come up with anything for him. Case in point all of his vignettes was just ripping off Ryder's internet show. It worked when Ryder was doing it, it sucked for Curtis.

I think they need to take the title off Christian. He's flailing away, and after Orton there isn't a money making feud waiting for him. I like him better as a heel, but I think he's more of a main event gate keeper type than the main eventer himself. He could have a couple more short runs before he retires, but he's more the upper card ring general that can fade in and out of the main event scene and also slide down the card on occasion to help make new stars.

I also think they need to capitalize on Mark Henry right now - strike while the iron is hot. Henry beats Sheamus clean at SS and would make him the #1 contender.

Christian could slip down the card to feud with Justin Gabriel. I'd probably give Christian a lackey/sidekick as well - I think Heath Slater would work since Christian was his Pro back on the first NXT season. Christian would win this feud, but it would help establish Gabriel. It would also give Christian something to do while Bryan vs Barrett plays out, because Christian vs Bryan would be my target program.

I'd have Christian win the MITB from Bryan. It would have to be done in a way to not make Bryan look dumb as shit though. Maybe have Bryan put it on the line against Barrett and win that match (everybody would think since it's on the line he's losing it). This would probably be at the December PPV, Bryan would be destroyed that he lost his ME spot at WM, but would have the RR to win back that opportunity(He's enter early and last until F3).

Christian would cash in the briefcase but lose - being the first to do so. It would fit his character.

Why does everyone have a hard on for Daniel to lose the MitB briefcase?
Do you really believe they gave him the shot to remove it from him?
I will even accept if he is being set up to lose the actual match but why not give it to Barrett in the actual MitB match in the first place?

I understand he doesn't fit the WWE image for a champion but wouldn't it be great if Dan won the title & then Cole quit on air at Wrestlemania leading to a Cattle Mutilation on the big stage!

Then we have the JR-King commentary team, of course that means we have to listen to the human Ceti eel until Miami but still this pays off the original NXT storyline.
Hell if you could talk Jericho into coming back to take the title into the show you are paying off the first episode & Daniels first WWE official match!!

I don't have a woody for him to lose it, I just think it's a forgone conclusion he will because how every time he wrestles it's brought up how he's going to WM with it - basically beating you over the head with the fact that he then won't be.

I can see that way of thinking, but this is the year Cena Vs Rock was set up 364 days in advance, so maybe it is a strange version of how they kept telling HHH was a world champ during late 1999 despite nobody actually buying it until finally we accepted it when he stepped up his game in 2000.

Of course night of the Champions, Barrett challenges & wins the Championship shot & WWE can go Fuck em selves again but I honestly want to believe.

Yeah, I don't think it's that everybody wants him to lose it, but just that it seems like something that has a chance of happening. I just don't know if I see Bryan walking around with the MITB briefcase for the next seven and a half months without some kind of bump in the road happening. I do think it'd be a good story to have him lose the shot, only to still somehow work his way into the world title match at WrestleMania. They could play up the whole "Daniel Bryan's WrestleMania dreams are destroyed" angle, only for him to still pull it off.

With all that said, I am a big fan of Bryan, so if he does make it all the way to Mania with his MITB shot intact, I'm not gonna complain. With Cena/Rock headlining the show, you could easily get away with putting Bryan in the Smackdown world title match without fear of it not being "big enough" for WrestleMania.

Does anybody else think Aksana now strongly resembles Layla?

And as a big-time Maxine mark when she was on NXT, it saddens me to hear she could've been back on my TV.

And how can anyone not like Booker on commentary? "The Fave Five." "D. Bryan." The man is a goldmine! Seriously. Even when Smackdown is boring, he and his interactions with Cole and Matthews keep me entertained.
