OOfficial Ratings/Discussion Thread for: SmackDown (August 19, 2011)

OO Nation: All discussion pertaining to SmackDown (airing August 19, 2011) should be done in this thread. It will remain pinned at the top of the Current Events section for the remainder of the week. In discussing the program, we'd love it if you shared your numerical rating for the show (from a low of 0.0 to a high of 5.0, in any increment of one-tenth of a point). For full details on the ratings scale and how to join in on this informal "Battle of the Brands," please be sure to check out the OOfficial Guidelines for TV Ratings/Discussion Threads.

Tonight on SmackDown: Teddy Long decides it's time to freshen up the World Title scene, and declares a 20-man Battle Royale to determine the #1 Contender to Randy Orton's title at the upcoming Night of Champions PPV... over the course of the night, the spotlight will focus mainly on 5 guys as your plausible winners: Christian (former champ), Cody Rhodes (IC Champ), Mark Henry & Sheamus (both getting vigorous pushes in new roles), and Sin Cara (presumably just so the announcers can keep pointing out how he seems so, ummmmm, kinda sorta differenty than before, not that they're implying anything)... the 20-man affair will also feature guest appearances by such luminaries as: Yoshi Tatsu, William Regal, and yes, Zack Ryder.... the set-up for the Battle Royale comes in the opening segment, and the Battle Royale itself is the main event of the night...

In between: the IC Title will be on the line, as Zeke Jackson gets his obligatory rematch against Cody Rhodes... although there's no clear-cut reason why he's visiting SmackDown, WWE Champ Alberto del Rio shows up and has a non-title match against Daniel Bryan; it's said to be an outstanding free TV match (lengthy and quite competitive)... Justin Gabriel and Tyson Kidd don't get nearly as much time, but also put on a reportedly-good 6-minute TV Special.... and Team Sweet Sweet Ass (Kaitlyn and AJ) will do battle with their former leader, Natalya (who teams with Alicia Fox)...

The flOOr is yours, OO Nation. Let your voice be heard and your thoughts on Brand Supremacy be known. Don't wait till after 10pm to post, either. Pre-show previewing and prognosticating is certainly welcome. So discuss, debate, and rate!

Cole just ruined a perfectly good four star match between Bryan and Del Rio.

I think I'm going to have to boycott Smackdown due to Orton/Henry. I'll admit that Henry is running with the ball more than he ever has in the past, but seriously, that is one world title feud I do not want to see.

Otherwise, the show was pretty decent, especially Del Rio/Bryan.

Opening segment was good and OMG CONTINUITY!!! I'd rather see Cody feuding with Orton than Henry.

Cody/Zeke wasn't very good, though it has been interesting to see how fast Zeke has gone from monster to jobber. It seems to me that Cody is bringing a little prestige back to the IC title.

Gabriel/Kidd was decent, but the crowd seemed pretty quiet. That's probably because Gabriel has been a heel for the past year and now is suddenly a face. And man, he's got some lame generic music.

Del Rio/Bryan was easily the match of the night and a really good TV match. Those two work well together. And with all the talk of WWE heels being cowardly, it's great to see Del Rio already has two clean wins under his belt as champion.

But wait, Del Rio sucks so disregard all of that.

It's a miracle, the Divas actually got over two minutes for a match! It actually wasn't too bad and I liked Natalya taking out Alicia after the match. After playing a cheery babyface for so long, it's good to see her back as a heel.

+5 points for Wade Barrett coming out rocking the coat. I'm hoping he goes back to that full time. Battle royals are always hard to rate, but I think just the fact I was 99% sure Henry was going to win put kind of a damper on this one.

And I'm fine with Christian being absent tonight and actually wouldn't mind if they kept him off of TV for a few weeks. He's basically been carrying Smackdown since Edge retired (well, along with Orton), so I think it'd be a good time for him to take a little break and recharge the batteries.

A little disappointing to see Henry as the #1 contender for Orton's belt. It really surprises me, considering that Orton has made it public, in radio interviews, that he does not like working with Henry in the ring. It's a considerable downgrade, considering how great his matches were with Christian.

Del Rio/Bryan was an excellent match. I'm really thinking the WWE should not continue to expose Del Rio on both brands, like they've done in the past. He is the WWE champion and should just stay on RAW.

Agree about Cody Rhodes and was a little surprised that he went out so early in the battle royal. Regarding Zeke, I will tell you what else he is fast at, and that's becoming future endeavored. Someone has finally realized that his in ring ability is sub par and his mic skills are just as bad.

It's nice to see that Wade Barrett is starting to follow the path he was meant to be on. I thing his upside is still high, if they can just get him involved in an interesting storyline.

I forgot to mention in my last post that I'm going to be disappointed if his feud with Bryan is already over. Given that Barrett went over clean at SummerSlam, I didnt' really like that there wasn't any follow up with that tonight. I just see it as one of those feuds where each guy could help to elevate the other.

And based on what happened in the battle royal, I'm wondering if the Barrett/Sheamus feud is going to be reignited (since Sheamus/Henry appears to abruptly be over as well).

Said it on the Spoilers thread, but thought it beared repeating.

Both del Rio-Bryan and Kidd-Gabriel matches had sweet finishes, for different reasons. del Rio-Bryan for the finishing sequence: Bryan tilt-a-whirls beautifully into a Guillotine Choke and the near-submission, but del Rio counters into a release Northern Lights suplex AND transitions nicely into the Royal Armbar. Gabriel-Kidd ended with Gabriel hitting the Fallen Angel (I'm just making up the names, humor me here) 450 Splash on Kidd who was HALFWAY across the ring, I shit you not.

I wonder why they didn't have Bryan in the Battle Royal. To protect him? Or did I just miss him?

They gave his South African-sounding music to notNexus aka Otunga/McGillicutty. Sounded like something from the soundtrack of Blood Diamond. Music choices have been kinda shitty lately, with the exception, of course, of "Cult of Personality".

Hey, if they can shell out some dough for "Cult", you think they'll spring for "The Final Countdown" for Daniel Bryan down the line?

The real issue with the DB - Del Rio match was Cole, and I have never felt that Cole was as unbearable as most, probably cos most of my WWE watching is heavy on the FF but when Cole claims imagine the embarassment if ADR had to tap to Daniel it destroys the excellent work both guys were producing.

Hell I'd call it now if they want to storyline a way to get ADR the smackdown title so THAT is the WM match for Daniel i'd be all for it.

I noticed DB was missing were there already 20 guys or was it 19?

Orton/Teddy break the HHH promo beginning & I almost miss the Poochhhy COO

Pity they think Orton - Henry can be worth anythingin 2011.

Barrett vs Danielson can't be finished yet, so if they're bringing in Sheamus while Orton feuds with Henry, I guess I could accept that. I also hope they add Christian into the mix - Bryan, Barrett, Christian, Sheamus could have mix and match matches and elevate each other if done right.

Mark Henry is bad ass right now. The matches will be terrible mind you, but I love him on the mic. I figure he'll have a couple PPV matches with Orton, maybe a non-finish and then Orton winning, before Big Show and/or Kane come back in October. Wwe could set-up a Big Show vs Henry vs Kane vs Brodus Clay Survivor Series Match.

Big Zeke needs to be endeavored. He wasn't bad as a bodyguard, but he's terrible in the ring. If Vince still marks for his size, and HHH wants to rebuild the tag division, than find Zeke a partner and stick him there.

Cody being Intercontinental Champion probably lowers him on the card, as he could have been in the upper card group with Bryan, Barrett, Sheamus and Christian and fit right in, but this opens the door to elevate a few undercard faces. I know Zack Ryder isn't a face, but he easily could be. I think Rhodes and Ryder could have an interesting feud with Cody using the Ryder internet show as fodder for any feud. Justin Gabriel could also step-up to face Rhodes.

Wwe really dropped the ball with the Jinder Mahal debut angle. I liked the kids potential in FCW, but the whole angle with Khali is crud.

Hunico as Sin Cara isn't working either. I still think we're going to see Mistico as Sin Cara come out and confront the Hunico fake Sin Cara soon. The question is - "Will anybody care?"

With Sin Cara V 2.0 making the save for Daniel I wonder if they might add the pair of them to the Upper midcard logjam, maybe have Daniel tag with Hunico only for Cara to attack, that way he gets to work with Dragon which makes him look like a superstar!

Throw in Barrett, Sheamus & Tyson and you develop a new Smackdown 6.

Christian then could stand as a defacto computer game BOSS before getting to Orton.

Really like the idea of Gabriel getting a shot at the IC I hope they allow Cody to bring some respect back to the belt but once again the overkill of the summer means he really can't feud with Daniel or Sin Cara for a while.
Ryder trying to earn a shot could actually lead to the rehabilitation of DiBiase, maybe allow Zeke to tag to hide his limitations?

Zeke/Rhodes only got 4 minutes? That is a quick burial. It's a shame Zeke doesn't move with a sense of purpose.

Aksana's saxophone has *got* to go. Lame, lame, lame, lame, lame.

Speaking of music, neither Kidd nor Gabriel have decent or fitting ring music. Unfortunately, dead-ass crowd took a lot of energy out of the match. The announcer's 15-second silence accidentally revealed a little too much. And they wasted a perfectly good opportunity to show the 450 splash in full screen as the first shot. The replay was just not enough, especially for a taped show.

Commentary on Del Rio/Bryan was surprisingly IWC-esque. YouTube plugging, "I cheer the good guys, that's what I do!", jumping on Booker T for a perceived sexist comment... *Much* better camera focusing on Bryan after the top rope dropkick. Kickass closing sequence. I'm not as much a fan of Del Rio as other folk, but he's capable of good things in the ring.

It's rare to see women intentionally no-selling. Natalya can pull it off against smaller girls like AJ. Good to see they're preparing for bigger things. That actually moved things along further than Gabriel/Kidd. Rare that happens.

The battle royal itself? Huh. They're starting to stretch the boundaries of the over-the-top stipulation. It's a little annoying to see a top seed spend so much time outside the ring picking when to go in. Can't tell if this is good ring psychology or something else. I wonder how long they can keep at this before deciding to do away with the over-the-rope rule.

But Orton/Henry? It makes sense, but it's not a match I want to see. Neither guy does it for me.

This year, it's only been Miz and Christian who've been carrying that torch. Hell, Punk has been guilty of that pre-Wrestlemania. I don't recall Nexus-Barrett playing the coward that much. And no way in hell will we see Henry playing the coward, should he win next PPV (and he won't).

Not a big fan of an Orton/Henry feud, but for some inexplicable reason, I want Henry as champ. I really wish he would have won it a few years back during that battle royal Angle won by not being in the ring for half of it.

With Smackdown treated as the "red headed step-child" these days I'd almost agree that a Henry World Title run could work, especially if they keep him brutal, & in short matches, it's not that the Orton or Christian title run has set the world alight.

Maybe build now to Survivor Series (Orton regains, though if it gets over they could wait until Rumble) you could use Kane & Show in the Hell in the cell & Orton if they want, the big problem is who gets fed to Orton if he is taken out of the title picture?
Whoever it is will never be treated as an equal & will almost certainly lose every big match in the feud, which is why the next heel on the show, Barrett, is someone I'd hold off on using unless they are suddenly going to completely change the booking strategy.

My belief would be to capatalise on Henry totally owning the character to then use him in February to legitimise a certain "nerd" can you imagine the reaction if on the Road to Wrestlemania after losing the title & losing at the Rumble Henry decides to make this the Nations Wrestlemania by crippling Daniel & taking the MitB only to tap, clean in the center of the ring!

Agreed Ideally next week we would get the now standard scene in which she flirts with teddy and he runs away all accompanied by the sax and then after teddy flees she could pull back a screen to reveal a sax player before saying "The saxophone isn't working like it does in the movies: You're fired"

Or, drop the whole angle entirely because Aksana isn't that hot, and the rest of it is stupid anyway.

Not to mention, they did this angle a couple of years ago when Maryse came back. It was marginally better because Maryse is actually hot.
