The Rock Producing Wrestling-Themed Pilot for NBC
From IGN:
The People's Champ and Jerry Bruckheimer are tag-teaming up to show us the 80s wrestling boom.
August 23, 2011
by Matt Fowler
Can you smelllllll what The Rock is...producing?
Deadline is reporting that NBC has bought the rights to an untitled fictional TV movie drama set in the world of wrestling in the 1980s; about the
boom the business experienced back then thanks to MTV and WrestleMania. Bruckheimer TV (as in Jerry Bruckheimer) and The Great One himself, The Rock,
are set to produce the pilot.
Focusing on what some call "the golden age of pro-wrestling," this potential series will depict the growth of cable TV and the death of the
traditional "territories." The big question here though: Who will play Vince McMahon?

I don't think they'd be able to use real people as characters, but I'm sure there would be characters where we say "ok,
that's obviously Hogan, that's obviously Piper", etc. There are probably a ton of actors right now who can pull off a 30-something Vince
fairly convincingly. That guy who played Nathan on Heroes isn't up to anything, is he?
This sounds like a really cool idea for a show but I don't really know if there's a big mainstream audience for it. I know period piece
stuff is in right now but I dunno. If it works, it's good for business because it might bring in some eyeballs off the TV show who get curious
about the modern product, but I think the audience for that TV show would be mostly people who are still into the modern product.

I don't the TV show would be for people watching the modern product. I think the TV show would be more aimed towards folks who enjoyed The
Wrestler.
That's just a guess. I have a feeling it will either be the Friday Night Lights of wrestling, or the Playmakers of wrestling.

The article is a little confusing. It first states that it's a TV movie, then it's a pilot - which would seem to indicate it's a
series.
I don't think a series would do anything, but a made-for-TV movie? Sure, I can see that doing well enough.

Sometimes they'll make a TV movie to use as a back-door pilot for a series.

With the Rock behind it you'd think he'd be reluctant to perpetuate some of the coke and orgy rumours of the 80's, and I think
honestly that's the big hook for when it comes to keeping non-wrestling fans interested.
I guess you could follow a group of guys... like a rookie (HBK), who's paired with an old road pro, and throw in the top guy (Flair)... first
season could be the kid making a name for himself in the territories along with some emotional drama... crap side jobs, politics... end the season
with him having some big match and in the back ground is a Vince character buying up territories.... the rookie is now the top up and comer, the
former top guys leaves to work with Vince or something
Second season could deal with the death of the territories... life in the WWF as Vince grows him empire... maybe the NWA trying to make a comeback
type thing.
Third season is the rookie finally going to work for the WWF-esque group... Maybe pressue to do steroids
Fourth season could be a year or two later... kids on top, Senate investigations into steroids, dealing with the money... ect
Pepper in some differeing perspectives and some road adventures, bad romances, politics, drugs and orgies...
I could kinda see this working, especially if they really go behind the scenes and delve into match making and politics of that world...
Proably better suited for an HBO - cable type outlet as opposed to network TV though.

Isn't every show better suited for HBO/Cable when you really think about it? Shorter seasons which means less filler, less restrictive of
content and stuff. I'm still shocked by how powerful the networks actually are when the cable strategy to shows seems to make more sense.

That was my first thought as well. As a wrestling fan, I find the idea of doing a series like this really intriguing (as there's any
number of things you could do with it), but it seems like it would be better off having no ties whatsoever to the Rock, which by extension ties it to
the WWE.
With Dwayne's involvement, I see it being more of a network TV-friendly series about some up and comer trying to make it in pro wrestling, with
all of the seedy R-rated stuff kept to a minimum or just alluded to.

This just reminds me of the Playboy series they have coming to NBC. I would have thought that a show about Hugh overcoming censorship during the
love/drug generation of the 60s would be interesting enough, but instead it looks like the show will revolve around murder investigations.
Similarly, I could see them screw up a wrestling related show, where it has to be about something other than old road stories of the 80s to create
intrigue for the mainstream audience. All of a sudden it's Don Muraco looking into a haunting at a local high school gym before the show will go
on...
...actually, that's not bad.
