OOfficial Ratings/Discussion Thread for: Live SUPER SmackDown (August 30, 2011)
OO Nation: All discussion pertaining to SmackDown (airing August 30, 2011) should be done in this thread. It will remain pinned at the top of
the Current Events section for the remainder of the week. In discussing the program, we'd love it if you shared your numerical rating
for the show (from a low of 0.0 to a high of 5.0, in any increment of one-tenth of a point). For full details on the ratings scale and how to join in
on this informal "Battle of the Brands," please be sure to check out the OOfficial
Guidelines for TV Ratings/Discussion Threads.
Tonight on SmackDown: the show is live, and WWE's tried to load it up with a few free-per-view caliber goodies... it's apparently a
trial run to see how SD will do away from Fridays, as WWE would like to move the show and hope for a ratings boost if the audience didn't
already know the spoilers...
The heaviest hype has been for tonight's World Title Match, which will pit champ Randy Orton against Christian, inside a steel cage... the two
have had countless matches over the past 4 months, many of them very good, so you'd certainly hope they can duplicate or top those results...
the only thing that might hinder them: there's not much uncertainty over the result... Orton's pretty much a lock to win, and go on to
face Mark Henry at the PPV... only way I see something different happening is if things go so schmozzy tonight that Christian (and his precious
lawyers) squeezes into the PPV match as the third wheel... lord knows, I'd be down with that, since Orton + Henry = Rick Go Nappy Nap...
Also hyped for tonight: CM Punk vs. Khali, in what was presumably meant to showcase how Punk would deal with a larger opponent, prior to his PPV match
against Kevin Nash... but now that match is off (there were issues with Nash's WWE physical, and the company decided against letting him work a
full PPV match just yet), as HHH suddenly named himself as the replacement... thus, the entire premise for Punk/Khali is moot, and I'd be
perfectly happy if that meant the match was scrapped, too... I don't know who would be a clone/surrogate for HHH, but any opponent would be
better than f'n Khali... also, due to the sudden change of plans, we could be due for some promo time with Punk/HHH, which is also fine by
me....
Another match: John Cena vs. Wade Barrett, in a flashback match to last year at this time, when Barrett and Nexus were getting the better of Cena...
this year, the match serves another purpose, as Wade's been bitching up a storm about being disrespected on SD... things reached a head on
Friday, when Wade walked out on a match against a lowly, no-name jobber, rather than waste his time... so tonight, somebody's decided
he'll have to face the biggest name of all (and his most hated ex-rival)... it might just be an easy win for Cena, but part of me hopes they do
something to play into Wade's current "I'm the best, and I'll prove it by facing the best" story arc, and he gets something out of
it...
Originally scheduled for tonight: Alberto del Rio vs. Sin Cara... but it's likely off (unless something has changed since my last update around
noon), as del Rio has gotten stuck in Mexico due to delays in sorting out his new work visa... it won't be a huge deal (remember, Sheamus and
McIntrye had these issues last summer, and they were solved in the order of days, not weeks), but it means WWE will have to be creative in how they
hype Cena/del Rio's PPV match... [note: the same applies to hyping Orton/Henry, as you can't do too much there without marginalizing the
Orton/Christian match]...
Since the next PPV is Night of Champions, we'll probably be focusing on the rest of the titles besides those top two tonight.... the US Title is
a mainly RAW issue (one with Ziggler and Swagger, and maybe Alex Riley, all involved in a Battle for Vickie that may or may not be headed for the
incredibly stupid move of turning Ziggler babyface), and I'd be perfectly happy if it stayed there... in contrast, the tag titles seem like they
belong mostly on RAW (since I'll eat a bug if Miz/Truth aren't the next #1 contenders to Air Boom), but I'd be very pleased to see
those 4 take advantage of tonight's cross-brand opportunity... as far as the women's title goes? who knows; Beth and Nattie still
haven't done anything other than stand around looking like the very barbie dolls they hate, and it's not like there'll be a
women's match on TV tonight longer than 2 mintues or so, so I'm not expecting anything huge...
So that leaves Cody Rhodes as tonight's main wild card when it comes to a potential significant match/angle... he's the IC Champ, and
he'll need an opponent come NoC (and Junior DiBiase really isn't gonna cut the mustard)... since Henry's bumped up to the World
Title feud, may I suggest Sheamus as an outstanding option to face Cody?
And I think that's all I got... it was fun actually having to THINK about writing a SD preview for once, what with there being no spoilers, and
me being left to my own genius to prognosticate tonight's events... let's hope it's just as fun watching SD later tonight... live on
SyFy; and remember, unlike RAW, this show starts at 8pm...
The flOOr is yours, OO Nation. Let your voice be heard and your thoughts on Brand Supremacy be known. Don't wait till after 10pm to post,
either. Pre-show previewing and prognosticating is certainly welcome. So discuss, debate, and rate!

Sin Cara vs Dan Bryan- guess Alberto Del Rio is still without a valid Visa, and is stuck in Mexico.
Sin Cara heel turn!? I guess we'll have to wait a while to see where this goes...

Anyone notice:
-Tyson Kidd made the opening credits?
-This is an amazing concept?
-Christian/Orton is one of the most balanced rivalries in WWE history? It's 4-1 right? And that one is by dq?

Would have to think we're heading to the much talked about Sin Cara v. Sin Cara* match since there seems little value in a heel Sin Cara...even
before we get to the no speaking part.
*evil
[edit] Not to say that Mistico is coming back or anything, but they could definitely do better than Hunico under the mask...he gives little value to
Mexico if it's not Mistico, so why not just put someone better under the mask. I pick Trent Baretta.

Just going on what I'm reading here, I'll have to watch later... but;
Sin Cara going heel...?!?
I would tend to lean towards the Sin Cara vs Sin Cara thought process, as I can't see them burying a big golden goose with the kids, expecially
when Rey is out right now. I would be tempted to say this is so that they can do a quick heel turn, have maybe Daniel Bryan bury him at NOC so that SC
can be taken off tv for a bit or endeavoured, but really... why bother? He's not involved in any real feuds and "he" has only really been back
for a little bit now and if that was the direction they were going to go you'd think they'd have just held him off TV the last little
while.

Goddamn that Punk/HHH segment was garbage.
1) There was no logic behind anything. HHH gave no reason for replacing Nash and it's completely out of character for Punk to ignore that
instead of pushing the issue.
And if HHH only wanted the match because Punk pissed him off, why would the board allow that? It seems like there would need some reason for the board
to think Punk was a threat, but instead they made it look like HHH can fight anyone who misses him off.
2) now I'm actually getting concerned about Punk getting pushed out of the main event. Unless there's an anvilicious swerve where HHH/Nash
have been in cahoots this whole time, it looks like this is turning into a HHH/Nash/Laurinitis power struggle and that doesn't seem to have any
room for Punk.(Besides how stupid it would be for HHH to feud with 2 non-wrestlers.)
3) Punk is still a polarizing character and they're not doing him any favors putting him against a pure face in HHH. It shows from the
surprising lack of crowd response for Punk, and that dead crowd is probably just what they're looking for as an excuse to stop pushing him and
go back to normal.
On another note, it looks like they want to give Sheamus a giant push. I wouldn't be surprised if Henry becomes champ, then loses to Sheamus.

The amount of 4th wall breaking during that contract signing has hurt my head.
So much of that entire thing made no sense to me. Why didn't Punk just kick HHH when he was holding him back from Nash? Don't they hate
each other? Does a suit take away HHH's power to wrestle? How did Nash learn how to speed walk in one day? How exactly does Punk want to
change WWE? Who is the face? Who is the heel? Who was GTV?
This HHH/Punk thing is off to a bad start. First there was wondering as to how they can hold off till WM or Survivor Series because there had already
been so much tension...now...they seem to have lost anything that had worked for both in 1 day.

I dunno. I don't think they have any idea what story they want to tell with Punk/HHH/Nash. Obviously Nash is the pure heel here, whereas Trips
and Punk are both coming off as good guys with deeply opposing philosophies about what's "best for the business". This angle could be
good, but it isn't, and the constant changing on the fly isn't going to help.

That contract signing segment actually really picked up steam (ironically) when Nash came out and all the various confrontations began. I liked HHH
trying to hold Punk back then HHH getting pushed on his ass by Nash. It was a good dynamic, I thought. But I'll echo what I said on Monday and
what Flammable mentioned above which is that having Punk go against HHH of all people is not helping Punk's standing with the crowd. Especially
with HHH continuously playing the "Cena" card and saying that half of the crowd likes what they're seeing and things don't need to
change (which obviously firmly makes that half of the crowd pro-HHH and anti-Punk). If they wanted to go this route, they may as well have just kept
Punk a heel.
And nobody's mentioned the most important part of the show - OMG Beth's new ring attire!! I'm not a fan of women wrestling in
skirts so I had to give it a demerit for that. But the rest of the outfit was pretty cool. I would've preferred some short shorts.

According to Michael Cole, tonight was their sixth meeting. So that would make Orton 5-1 in the feud, with only taking one loss by DQ. Going back
further, he was 3-0 in his feud with CM Punk. So Orton is 8-1 in one on one matches over his last two feuds, without being pinned once. Let's
all think about that.
The show itself was decent, headlined by an absolutely awesome main event.
It was fun to see Cena and Barrett reunited, but that match was a glorified squash for Cena. As a Barrett fan, I don't like it.
Good match between Bryan and Sin Cara, but I liked their match from a couple of months ago (which featured the other Sin Cara) better. The heel turn
is kind of interesting and it does seem like this would set the stage for the "real" Sin Cara to return, so I guess we'll see.
Divas match was the usual stuff. At least Beth/Natayla won.
I'm in the minority, but I liked the Punk/Triple H stuff for the most part. It was a little overlong, but I thought it was pretty good. And I
think Nash was more effective in the two minutes he was out there tonight than he's been in the entire time he's been back on TV.
Can't say I'm thrilled with the idea of a Sheamus/Jinder Mahal feud, but I guess Sheamus needs something to do while Orton/Henry feud for
the belt. Plus it will allow Mahal to be in a match that isn't a five-minute squash.
Absolutely loved the main event. I think Christian and Orton have officially made the list of guys who can do no wrong together. The spot where
Christian faked coming off the turnbuckle, with Orton waiting with the RKO, was fucking awesome (since that's how Christian lost two other times
against Orton). With all that said, it's pretty deflating to see Christian job yet again to Orton and now we're officially getting
Orton/Henry.

Christian and Orton have really brought out some of the best in each other this summer. I'm almost disappointed that their rivalry is over. They
had counters to counters to counters with each other. Orton has probably had the two of the best tv matches in the WWE this year, and I think
tonight's was the best.
Wade Barrett looks like a chump from walking off a match against a jobber, to getting crushed by Cena.
I'm in the the wait and see camp with the Sin Cara turn. I don't think anyone could have predicted that happening.
It wasn't the most jam packed show, but the main event was great, and more than made up for it.
Edit: My dvr cut off as soon as Henry came out. The 411 report didn't say what happened, so anyone care to fill me in? And then answer the
question?

Sky sports ended just as Henry & orton started fighting in the cage, did anything else happen?
Strange show, Cena & Barrett was a glorified squash derailing any interest from Barretts current story (I bet now he wishes it wasn't one & done
with Bryan)
Does anyone worry if being Mexican may make sorting out visa issues a little more problematic for ADR?
We've had 2 super shows in a row & Cody with the IC missing off both, they're going to scramble to get an opponent for him now
The contract signing was a mess, I think HHH interrupted Punk at least once to argue the point but ended up agreeing with him and claiming Punk
"backdoored" his way into the situation makes no sense when he became No1 contender by earning it.
Do they really expect people to believe the WWE is perfectly run right now?
I read that Nash will be cleared to wrestle on one of the two October PPVs so is HHH or Punk getting the guaranteed 5 star classic?

I just wish Punk got to reply with " I may be skinny fat but no woman has ever bought me framed posters of Mr Olympia winners for christmas"

Anyone else notice during Punk's entrance that they've spliced in his TitanTron graphics his old logo from his SES days? The one with the
"straight edge hardcore" circle and lightning bolts...
Is the old man and the snake that far behind? I mean I think Punk HAS to go back to being a heel... they've completely dropped the ball on him
and his momentum.
I'm hoping we get a Heel Punk to fight a returning face Jericho when he returns. Those twitter shots are not without reason

For anyone wondering about the reason behind Sin Cara's "heel turn," to quote the ESPN football crew - C'MON MAN!!
It couldn't be more obvious that they're not turning him heel. As has been mentioned, his merchandising is basically printing money for
WWE. There's no way they throw that away. The only question is how they'll do this since I've been hearing the stuff, as everyone
else has, about the various problems with the Sin Cara's. Maybe they'll hold auditions.

Thinking about it more, I'm really annoyed how out of character Punk was throughout the whole promo.
How could he not question Nash being removed from the match? He should have at least been smug about it and congratulated HHH for realizing Nash was
too old and crippled and pathetic to fight Punk.
How could he not question why the board would allow HHH to fight? He should have either said that they shouldn't try to silence him because he
wants change, or he should have pushed more that he's only a threat to HHH, not the WWE.
Worst of all, how could he let HHH say he "backdoored" his way into anything? That's the kind of crap I expect from the oblivious announcers
when Cole rewrite history. Punk should have pointed out that he earned his shot, beat Cena twice, and, as the icing on the cake, said "it's not
my fault that you referee.as badly as you run the company."
Instead we got vague, repetitive crap about "change." It really looks like this "ride" is going off the rails.

Also on Raw they claimed the board had decided Nash Vs Punk wasn't happening.
Last night HHH tried to imply this was purely personal nothing to do with "business"
I also wish Punk had pointed out that WWE and Vince especially weren't the ONLY version of wrestling, hell he could reference HHH by bringing up
his "hero" Flair and how Vince himself never bought the Nature Boy fully.
This whole Backdoor thing stuck out so much and I worry they will try to paint Punk as somehow anti-WWE universe or some crap.

Punk has been lame ever since he came back - he's not a face, and they're trying to make him one.
Announcers and Cena seemed to forget that the blow-off to the Barrett/Cena feud had Cena yanking down a string of hanging chairs and having them crash
down on Barrett and bury him.
Why have Bryan job if Sin Cara is going to heel on him afterwards? Wouldn't it have made more sense for Bryan to win for Sin Cara to attack him
afterwards?
Hunico is too clunky to work as Sin Cara - if Mistico is out, they need to find somebody smoother. Not saying Hunico can't stick around, but he
needs to be somebody other than Sin Cara.
I remember Eddie Guerrero.

^^ Mae Young....
Punk has been out of character since Nash arrived in the Angle. However, it seems he's going to go with saying "cool" things, but wrestling as
if he never even heard them himself, which is OK I guess because of the genuinely weird real/kayfabe nature that is born out of the necessity to keep
the fights real.
Agree too on the quality of the main event. It drew the first "this is awesome" chant I can recall in recent memory on WWE TV and the annoucing crew
seemed to do thier best to drown it out!
Best exchange of the night :
Booker: "I'm all outta breath here.."
Cole : "Good."
