bachelorette/bachelor parties

A young (compared to me) woman I know got engaged and within less than a month flew off to Vegas for a bachelorette party (wedding still several months off).

My knowledge of bachelorette parties is (sadly) minimal, but back in the day I remember bachelor parties being shortly before the wedding, not right after the engagement. Is this the new standard?

From my knowledge of bachelor and bachelorette parties (all of which, fittingly, comes from the movie "Bachelor Party"), they usually happens right before the wedding. Also, it usually involves a shitload of sexually fueled hijinx and lots of drugs.

Everything about this girl is awesome. She's hot, she got kicked out of school for sucking too many dicks, she takes it in the ass and her body gives itself abortions. -Punker on Lilly Allen's Miscarriage

All the bachelor parties I've ever been to were the weekend before the wedding... gives ample time to recover.

Of course they are, and you are too... otherwise, you wouldn't have come here.

I had mine like 4 months ahead of time. My brother had has 2 days ahead of time. I broke my elbow at his, so I was in the wedding party with a bum wing. Lesson has to be to have your bachelor party far enough ahead of time that any broken bones will heal by the wedding.

That's racism man! I love to racism bro!

This must've been one awesome bachelor party.

I had mine a couple months before the wedding and the wife had hers about a month before the big day. My one requirement was that I did not want to do anything more than a small gathering the night before the wedding. Partially for reasons along the lines of what happened to Boney above and partially because the last thing I wanted to feel like for my wedding day was anywhere near the complete and utter mix of hungover and exhausted that I felt like after my bachelor party (not to mention the horrible remorse and guilt from spending a small fortune at the strip club but that's another story).

All that said, your friend definitely acted pretty damn quick, Jack. Maybe she just wanted an excuse to go to Vegas.

Maybe she's not expecting the engagement to actually last, so she wanted to go on a trip and have her friends pay for all her drinks.

Or that.

Speaking of which, when did they get engaged? And when is the wedding date? If they got engaged on, say, September 1, 2011 and they're planning on getting married in August 2012, and she jetted off for her bachelorette party before September 2011 was up...that may not bode well for how things are gonna go.

She got engaged in late July and was off to Vegas within the month - I'm inclined to think it's the Gen Y chicks being over the top.
