Colt Cabana's "Art Of Wrestling" podcast

AJ turned me on to this podcast in the Music forum but since that area seems to get about 2 views-per-week, I figured I'd post about it here just to get it some more publicity(?) I guess?

Anyway, Colt Cabana does this podcast called The Art Of Wrestling and, to sum it up, it's fucking awesome. Each episode is about 50 minutes to an hour and starts off with him using it as more of a personal journal, talking about what's going on in his life right now, where he last wrestled, etc. Just this part is awesome because it gives a great view into the life of an indy worker and all the trials and tribulations he goes through just to be able to pay for groceries and keep his heat on. Then he does his "Song Of The Week" which is always wrestling-related and if you grew up on wrestling in the 80's and 90's you will fucking love some of the memories these songs he finds bring back. Off the top of my head, he's played "Steinerized" (which I always thought was "Steinerline") - the Steiners' old entrance music, Konnan's horrible rap song that he had a video for from WCW in the late 90's, some kind of bizarre Kurt Angle song that had him rapping "I don't...suck!", and a song by Roddy Piper where he's actually singing. I'm telling you, Colt finds some shit to play that I didn't even know existed.

Anyway, after that he goes on to his weekly interview and his interviews are awesome as all hell. He is a great host, asks great questions, and is oftentimes funny and endearing. And he's had some great guests. The podcast started in 2010 so I've been playing catch-up but he has had people like Austin Aries, the Briscoes, CM Punk (of course), Hurricane Helms, The Iron Shiek (which I can't fucking wait to listen to), Necro Butcher (who tells some great stories surrounding his role in "The Wrestler" with Mickey Rourke) and many, many more. And it's not just limited to indy guys because he's also had Beth Phoenix, Zach Ryder, and some other people currently on the WWE roster. Regardless, I have yet to not be entertained by one of his podcasts.

If this whole post sounds like it's just me licking Colt Cabana's balls it's because, yes, that is what I am doing. If you love wrestling and love hearing behind-the-scenes stories about wrestling, subscribe to this podcast ASAP.

The story of Molly Holly paying for Beth Phoenix's training is one that stuck out to me.

I've listened to nearly all of them from the start, and I agree with your analysis. I thought the Hero one was great, mainly because of the end where he talked about sayings that Claudio fucked up. WaterLemon is still hilarious. One of the most remarkable parts is how the wrestlers who didn't speak english, like Claudio and Kevin Steen, used wrestling to learn it. It's a good show.

On another note, I hope Cabana ends up back in ROH soon. Hopefully in a spot where he isn't fighting boring people, like all of this year.

I've listened to most of these and they are almost always fantastic. In addition to the one's already mentioned, both Domino podcasts are pretty great. The 2nd one covering his time in Nigeria was really awesome. If you are going to listen to the Ryder one, I'd recommend listening to the Hawkins one first. There is a little story carry over.

Edit: Has anyone watched the Colt/Danielson documentary Wrestling Road Diaries? I've been thinking of ordering it.

Yeah, strangely enough, Colin Delaney was one of my favorites so far, just due to the whole unbelievable "rags to riches" aspect of his story. He was literally working in a factory in Rochester when his buddy was working a WWE show and they needed a jobber so his buddy called him and was like "Can you get to the arena?" And Colin was like "Yeah, why?" And his buddy was like "If you can get here, you can probably wrestle Shelton Benjamin tonught." Just wild stuff. And Colin was pretty damn funny throughout his interview regardless.

That's one thing I like about Colt's podcasts is that they usually have a fun, easygoing vibe about them, even though many of these people (including Colt) have had less-than-stellar experiences with WWE. There's never more than a few easygoing jabs at WWE. Probably because they're hoping to one day get rehired.

100% concur. I'd even say this Nigeria podcast was the best wrestling interview/podcast I have ever heard. I guess the point of this podcast is to get us to know some of these wrestlers a little better than WWE or other companies would let us.. and here's a guy who in WWE I really couldn't have given a shit about, but had boat loads more personality in this hour long interview.

Off the top of my head I remember the Briscoes being great ('that's why I love chickens!', Quackenbush always being entertaining because as my avatar indicates I'm a huge fan of Chikara, Kevin Steen, and Jimmy Korderas.*

*Of all of the wrestling podcasts, I would recommend Colt Cabana's obviously, as well as Arda Ocal and Jimmy Korderas' Aftermath, and David Lagana's I Want Wrestling. They also put over each others' podcasts and have appeared on each others' programs.

I love this podcast so much. I download it immediately every Thursday.

I think the standout one would be Luke Gallows' one. Man, they missed the boat on that guy. He is the most charismatic, hilarious guy Colt has had on so far. Yes, Luke Gallows.

Every week you learn something. Whether it's about someone like Johnny Curtis who doesn't get the chance to show his personality on TV, or a genuine story like Greg Iron overcoming cerebral palsy and a tough childhood to realise his dream, you learn something that you remember. It's reminded me why I love wrestling so much.

The Johnny Curtis episode gives me a fair amount of confidence that he'll never cut a promo on Raw. He drops way too many casual "fuck"s into his sentences for WWE to ever be comfortable giving him a mic on live TV.

But yes, I'll echo my Music forum sentiments too, that this is the only podcast I make a point to listen to every week. Gallows, Compton/Domino, Hero, Punk, and the Hawkins and Ryder ones are probably my favorites thus far. And yeah, I had forgotten the Colin Delaney one, that was fun too.

And as far as Wrestling Road Diaries, it is well worth it. A long feature (like 2:45 roughly if I'm remembering right), that follows Colt, Danielson and Sal Rinauro (who I really didn't know anything about prior to watching the DVD, and listening to the AOW episode with him as the guest weeks after the DVD release; he's a really funny guy too) through various indy shows, training seminars and other random road trip hijinx. A lot of fun.

Even if WWE didn't want to use him as a wrestler (which I don't really get either...they love Santino, and Colt can basically be the equivalent of Santino without the accent, and better in the ring to boot), how could they have not found a role for him somewhere? He was doing commentary in FCW and was good at that. Maybe if we were still in the days of managers playing legitimate roles.

But I digress. AOW is awesome, well worth listening to, and even going back and listening to some past episodes if you're just discovering it (Yeah, Colt discusses some of his current goings-on, but the episodes themselves really aren't topical, so they don't become too dated). And Wrestling Road Diaries gets my recommendation.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I totally forgot (and almost posted in the Music forum thread to note this)...absolutely go listen to this week's show, in particular the song of the week. It's TAKA Michinoku's Japanese theme, which is the same as his WWE theme (which was pretty cool in its own right), but with him talking over parts of it. "Yo, whats up man. My fuckin' name is Taka Michinoku. Who the fuck are you?" God, I miss Taka.

I mean the sayings that Claudio fucked up, not anything he did. At the very end, Hero went through a few things Claudio didn't have a grasp on, like saying Mike Tyson was introduced to the hall of fame, and mixing up lemon and melon. It was before Claudio signed with the WWE

It's on iTunes.

I loved how Steen learned English from listening to Raw and thought that Slobberknocker was a real word.

And some of the music is crazy. Like Hogan's "Beach Patrol" and "I Want to be a Hulkamaniac" songs, and Macho Man's "Be A Man, Hogan!" rap.

I've been singing the praises around these parts of the board for months now, but yes go listen and enjoy.

The Mad Man Pongo & the Alex Shane (or Brian Kendrick for wack job in the good way) are interesting listens not mentioned before.

I'd also add the Lagana podcasts they give a lot more "honest" appraisal of the WWE than you'll get in the Art of Wrestling shows since you'll normally get guys open to returning or wanting a chance in the WWE. Most of the writers have accepted they'll never go back, the problem is I fear the TNA deal may end the shows.

I think its also at ilovecolt.com

The interviews are great, and the song is usually fun, but the parts at the beginning and end where Colt is just rambling are almost always skippable.

welovecolt.com, and yeah, the current week's episode streams there, and you can click on "Archive" to go to the tsmradio page.

In other Cabana entertainment news, the "Creative Has Nothing For You" weekly web shorts (also linked from welovecolt.com) are usually good for a laugh as well.

Just listened to the Domino interview and it was a really good one. The dude didn't pull any punches. And he didn't have the nicest things to say about everyone's favorite mid-00's Diva, Cherry.

Also, I am rapidly learning that pretty much everyone has a "First time I met CM Punk" story. Since he seems to enjoy being a dick to everyone upon first meeting.

Yeah, Cabana also deems to be a Dick to people on the first meeting. Gowan and others have told stories of him bigtiming them, though some of them thought he was joking.

It's always interesting hearing those "Colt was an asshole to me" stories because he seems like such an easygoing, fun-loving guy on the podcasts, I can't picture him being an asshole to anyone. Hell, I find it hard to believe that he's the same guy that was involved in the brutal Generico-Steen feud last year.

Just wanted to bump this back up as Colt has had a slew of "A-list" guests lately in Chris Masters, Carlito, Tommy Dreamer, and, most recently, Mick Foley.

Chris Masters came off quite well and, as with many other people Colt has interviewed, I had a much more positive view of him after listening to his podcast than before. He's a lifelong wrestling fan (as opposed to just being some musclehead who got in because of his physique) and he even apologized for being a dick to Colt back in his heyday when he apparently had many issues (substance-related and attitude-related).

Carlito was much more low-key than many of Colt's other guests. He joked around a bit but he kept it pretty straight-forward. And he admitted to being an asshole.

Dreamer was awesome and he easily could've gone another hour or two. He was just full of stories and that was before he even got to his ECW days.

I'm still working my way through Foley but his podcast has a hilarious bonus segment at the beginning of Colt, Cliff Compton (my favorite all-time podcast guest), and CM Punk just hanging out and bullshitting. I think my favorite part is when they're giving out ways to contact them and CM Punk sarcastically gives his Twitter handle and follows-up with "You know, since WWE has been beating the ever-loving shit out of Twitter the last couple of weeks."

That he was. For the 2nd time. Mr. 1859 (or whatever his moniker is). I was listening in the car so my ears were spared, more or less.

Also, Tommy Dreamer's story of Bob Backlund snubbing him for an autograph 30-something years ago was hilarious/sad. Glad they buried the hatchet a few months back.

Told you!

I loved when Bryan was talking about the differences of his long-time fans vs. his current fans and how he'll be signing autographs and a guy will be like "Man, I was there when you detached your retina against Morishima, you're awesome man!!" and the next person will be a kid who's like "Are you going to use your Money In The Bank briefcase at Wrestlemania?!"

The "bacon is my passion" story was pretty fucking hysterical, too. I think I'm going to use my days off over Christmas break to catch up on the more recent ones with Carlito and Dreamer and Foley

Yeah, it always amazes me how nice and innocent some of these guys come across in the podcast and then, in Bryan's case, they have it in them to wrestle Cage of Death matches or 80-minute stiff-fests, etc.

He used to work at a KB Toys for Crissakes!!
