Un-OOficial Discussion for NXT R-Evolution (11 December, 2014)

Methinks the hardway juice was the perfect opener for Kevin Owens (Steen).

Results:
-Pre-show: Corey Graves announces his retirement from the ring due to concussions and joins the announce team.
-Kevin Owens over CJ Parker. Parker likely broke Owens' nose with the Moonshot palm strike, which only added to Owens' "Fight!" gimmick.
-Lucha Dragons retain over Vaudevillains.
-Baron Corbin squashes Tye Dillinger. Post match staredown with Corbin and Bull Dempsey.
-Ascension vs Itami/Balor: Balor debuts the old school paint. Sweet as. That entrance is a genuine mark out moment. Baylor/Itami win with a double-double foot stomp off the top rope. Balor is a superstar, and this is his breakout moment.
-Charlotte retains over Sasha Banks in a surprisingly stiff match. These two looked like a million bucks in there. That's how you blow off a feud.
-Zayn defeats Neville to win the NXT Championship. Zayn takes the moral high road and doesn't potato Neville with the NXT belt, but wins anyway. Post match, the locker room comes out to congratulate Zayn led by Owens, and Owens has stitches on the bridge of his nose and he's *still* bleeding. After a long celebration (and after the closing logo flashes, I'm pretty sure), Steen turns on Zayn on the floor and power bombs him onto the edge of the mat. Ow. Regal comes out, incensed. Fade to black.

Out of all the times for it to happen, Owens gets busted on in his goddamn debut which made him look a Grade A badass. At least we know God is on his side.

Man, jumping straight to Owens vs Zayn sounds like a smark fantasy booking come to life.

You know HHH, it's great that you're saying things like that now (and the wrestlers who went out there tonight certainly deserve it), but what difference will it make a year or so from now when Kevin Owens makes his Raw debut, and Vince takes one look at him and says "no one's gonna buy a fat guy like that as a superstar!" and proceeds to job him to Cena, Sheamus and anything else with a pulse.

Yep...this is the bittersweet with NXT. It's so much awesome, but you know their best days are likely behind them once they get called up.

What're A.J. Styles and Kurt Angle doing on an RV Renovation show, Tazz?

That's what we do to stay afloat now because there's no point in trying anymore after watching NXT Takeover, Mike.

Is Owens really that big? And even so...he seems like a scaled Bam Bam at Bammers peak. I don't think Vince will automatically ignore the guy.

That being said...

Regardless of CM Punk's thoughts...the WWE is setting itself up nicely for AFTER Vince. Some of that is by design. Some of it is not. I think NXT is turning out to working better than they expected. And the guys going through the system and "graduating" are folks that should be around for a while.

I can't remember the last time I've seen such a solidly put together wrestling show from top to bottom.

Why can't they run the main shows like this?

Oh. Right. Vince.

I see him listed places as being 5'10" and 275 and 5'11" and 240. He looks a bit heftier than 240.

My first live wrestling experience via Roku and I invested in the device just in time, it seems.

Holy shit was that an awesome show!

Full disclosure: that was my first exposure to Owens/Steen and. man, that dude is an asskicker! I mean, I don't know what I expected when his catch phrase is "Fight Owens Fight," but "goddamn, pal" he was impressive. Also, do we know if he just bladed or did he actually let CJ Parker break his fucking nose? Because if so, again, fuckin' A!

Baron Corbin was cool, I guess. I wasn't totally interested.

The tag title match was decent, and I think the Villains will get their run soon enough.

Anyone else find it ironic that theatrical heir apparent to the Great Muta was the damn Irish guy and not Hideo Itami. Like Owens, I have very limited exposure to Balor and this is probably par for the course for you dudes who have seen him, but that shit was crazy. I gotta think the Ascension are main-roster bound and will be hotshotted to the tag title and Itami/Balor will team to beef up the division.

Flair's daughter and Snoop Dogg's cousin put on a damn show. Once again, Charlotte does it for me.

Neville-Zayn was a phenomenal. I got my between-the-turnbuckle-DDT action, some genuine psychology and a feel good moment. Neville killed it as the crafty win-no-matter-what heel and can see him easily working a program with Owens while Zayn is out selling his injury.

I also think I enjoyed Zayn's 'F' bombs a little bit too much. Hooray for cursing on a "PG" product!

As for the endgame, goddamn if that wasn't perfect. The seeds were planted right when Owens was the first to hit the ring and the commentators played their hand with the "his best friend" line, but it didn't annoy me in the least.

Not treating the audience like idiots and pairing two guys who have well-documented history into a program is a stroke of genius and I can already tell it's going to go over like gangbusters. In addition, this feels like Zayn's last full-fledged program before getting the main roster call up.

He doesn't need a long title reign. If he and Owens do a series of matches or just one huge blow off, then Zayn can put him over on his way out and up to the show.

I also can't get Zayn's entrance song out of my head now. "This is wrestling" indeed.

Am I the only one who finds it a bit telling that the biggest lull from a show featuring developmental talent was the one segment that featured someone one the main roster?

Roman's backstage promo was just painful to watch, and I think he might actually have Cena beat in the category of "I can't believe a single thing you say." It's made especially bad when you consider that this is the guy WWE is bending over backwards to shoehorn into the top spot on the entire roster.

On another note, when you look at her booking on RAW vs. Takeover, this is the kind of week that should be making Charlotte hope that she never gets called up.

After the Moonshot palm strike from CJ Parker, I apparently paid too much attention to Owens' nose. How's Parker's hand, you ask?

Just getting a chance to watch right now .. The crowd chanting "Chi-Val-Ry" at Aiden English after he pushed Gotch out of the way of the stereo lucha dives was incredible.

I've also just started watching this- as soon as Owens came out, I got a Samoa Joe making his TNA debut feel... And five minutes later, the crowd chants "Owens gonna kill you"...

I think if they're planning on doing anything NXT related during mania week, it needs to be headlined by Zayn vs Owens.

ETA: rewound and rewatched the Balor entrance three times. Fuck me that was awesome.

Just finished up. Best action I've seen since the last NXT Takeover. I've been watching consistently since first Takeover...and since it's easier to access now. Their "PPVs" have been excellent, but even their regular weekly shows are about the best thing you'll see all week. For the most part actual wrestling over the entertainment, but with plenty of entertainment in there too. Gotta be a mix of both for me. So, if you just tuned in tonight, keep watching. It's not always this good, but it has an oldskool feel that really scratches my itch where RAW and Smackdown just can't do it.

Tonight's biggest matches were the Women's and Men's championship fights. Everybody knew how awesome Neville and Zayn would be, but the ladies were great. The crowd was into it. I was into it. THE ANNOUNCE TEAM was into it. That's what you do! Put the in ring action over as it's happening. You can hype the main event or something that happened earlier, but you should focus on the action that is happening NOW! Each match should be put over as important in one way or another. Vince, Script Writers, Cole, Lawler and JBL should all take this to heart. Money to be made and fans to be won over in women's, tag and cruiser weight style divisions...if you're willing to go for it. Hell, TNA should take note because it seems that WWE made their own "alternative" when they should be the alternative.

I suppose it was summed up best earlier in the thread when it was basically broken down to "WWE - Vince McMahon = NXT", I'm sure it's slightly more complicated than that but I honestly can't believe how vastly different the experience watching NXT on any given night is from watching Raw. It's almost like a McDonald's that has a small In-N-Out kiosk inside of it.

Admittedly I've been slacking in regards to giving NXT the regular attention that it deserves, but after last night I think that'll change.

Thoughts:

  • Kevin Owens. "K.O.", OHHH I get it! Somewhere Chris Hero is angrily eating an Arby-Q sandwich.

  • I am really enjoying the schticky earnestness of Gotch & English. Speaking of the bittersweet nature of NXT, a promotion to the main roster for these two would be nothing more than a death sentence (see: Rose, Adam.) It'll be interesting to see in the coming years if the gradual infusion of talent, and hopefully the sensibilities of NXT to the main roster might make for a safer and more welcoming home for guys like the Vaudevillains. But as it stands right now, barring any massive overhauls, they better hope they don't get the call.

  • Kalisto is going to make the company a lot of money someday. Here's hoping he takes care of himself a little better than Rey did.

  • Is it alright to be a Baron Corbin mark? Because I think I might be a Baron Corbin mark. Which makes me laugh, because this is precisely the sort of thing that would make me roll my eyes on Monday nights. Loved the crowd timing the match, but much like counting along with Cesaro's swings, the timing was way off. It can't be that hard to throw a "ONE-THOU-SAND" in between the counts, can it?

  • Bull Dempsey reminded me of the local Magic the Gathering champ trying to play mind games with the pre-lim winners at comic book store. Loves me a menacing golf clap.

  • Finn Balor. Holy shit. Whether it's while watching wrestling or mid-coitus, I know somethings working whenever my girlfriend puts down her iPad and takes notice. "That was some Cirque du Soleil-level stuff right there." Yes it was, honey, yes it was.

  • Itami teasing the GTS was amazing. Do yourself a favor and rewind it just to hear the crowd again. I also liked how the crowd policed itself when a small batch of wankers started chanting "We want Kenta!" Did anybody else catch that? The rest of the crowd drowned them out with a wall of boos and then a "Heh-Day-Oh!" chant. Well played.

  • I really want to like the Ascension. Seriously. I do. Up until last night I couldn't figure out what was keeping me from doing so. Now I know: their Mortal Kombat crotch-flaps. These guys should be the second coming of the APA (less on the comedic side) once they hit the main roster. Ditch the Outworld garb.

  • Does someone want to explain to me why Charlotte did the job for the Total Divas equivalent of Natalie from the Facts of Life on Monday? Sorry, that was mean. Mindy Cohn was actually likable. Natty's more like Blair. Outstanding match. I can't believe how stiff some of those shots and bumps were. Kudos to Sasha Banks as well. Enjoyed the hell out of her Nature Boy strut.

  • I believe that was the first time I've heard the majority of a crowd react negatively to Roman Reigns. A sign of things to come? Or just the smarky crowd? Either way, time to step up your game Roman.

  • It's been a while since I actually gave a damn about a World Title match. Zayn and Neville put on a hell of a show. I never expected Neville to be able to pull of the heel stuff as well as he has. Got an earnest chuckle out of the "this ref sucks" chant. Man, did that powerbomb onto the apron look painful. I cannot believe that we're getting Generico/Steen under a WWE banner.

Damn fine show. I'd say probably their best live event yet. You have to wonder what the mood is going to be like backstage before TLC, because the NXT events have been outshining the big PPVs at every turn. I can't help but wonder what Vince's actual level of awareness of this show is. Sadly, I still have to imagine that he sees this as being inferior to the main show. Oh well.

Yeah, just to clarify, I am not at all trying to say that I think Owens is "too fat" to be a WWE star. But let's be real here, the guy does not have the look that Vince thinks big stars need to have. He's not huge like a Viscera or Rikishi, he doesn't have the height to go with his weight like a Bigelow, he's just an average-sized kinda pudgy guy.

Remember that this is the company that has ran storylines based on the ideas that "Mickie James is fat" and "Molly Holly has a big ass." Remember that Bray Wyatt was originally given the name "Husky Harris."

Of course, Owens is also a world-class ass kicker who can get crowds to respond in kind. But we all know that all it takes is for Vince to take one look at the guy, say "that isn't a star," and his WWE career will be doomed to top out at about the same level of booking purgatory that Cesaro currently occupies.

And yes, I am psyched to get him and Zayn together so quickly. During the celebration I was telling my brother-in-law (who pretty much only watches WWE) who was watching the show with me a bit about their history. "Yeah, this could be a killer feud down the line. They used to tag together in Ring of Honor and Owens turned on him and they had this wild fe--OH SHIT THEYRE DOING IT NOW"

Owens's style and lack of a mainstream look might help him, though. Zayn has good height, yet no muscle definition, while Neville is carved out of goddamn granite, yet looks shorter or as short as Daniel Bryan.

Same with Hideo and Balor.

People praise Vince McMahon for his ability to make stars. If he allows himself to take a couple days off from the gym and the tanning bed and listens to who the CROWD thinks is a star, then he can put his marketing and creative "genius" to work to build the depth some main event depth.

Only adding to the holy shit, that show fucking ruled part of the thread. From top to bottom, the show pretty much rocked.

Owens was awesome.

Balor's entrance was amazing. Like the other poster, I have watched it numerous times. It was so bad ass. I feel bad for not seeing his work in Japan.

Sasha Banks vs Charlotte was really awesome. Probably my favorite NXT women's match of the year.

The main event was incredible. Zayn not taking the low road and still overcoming the obstacles was such a great story. Neville really brought it too. They both looked like gold.

Owens turning on Zayn made me happy. FEUD FOREVER.

I wish I had time to write more because I really loved this show.
