The Division or a Sub-MMO Shooter That Actually Might Not Suck??

So far in the X-Box One/PS4 life cycle, I've been burnt twice by pre-order suggestions from hardcore gamers. Titanfall was kinda boring after you realize you're taking on the same four guys everytime and the robots don't last that long because the beta players figured out all the tricks for killing them four months before the game came out. And Destiny wasn't much better: between the Dinkles phoning it in on the only storyteller in the game (and there not really being a story), the same two types of missions for every story (either survive waves of guys coming in a room with limited cover or duck in and out of cover to kill a tank or other robot that has weak grunts with it), and, again, the fact that every player seemed to know how to master all the PvP stuff before the game actually came out, the game kinda sucked.

The Division sounds like one of those games, but whats winning me over is two-fold: that every gaming outlet that has opinions in line with mine says it's avoiding every mistake Destiny made and that every hardcore gamer that recommended Titanfall and Destiny to me stated that they don't like it that much because "It's not one they can master" (which I read into as "average players like myself won't be dealing with a bunch of guys jumping all over the place and getting thirty kills in under a minute").

That it's a Tom Clancy game has me interested (those games usually require a bit of thinking before running out and trying to kill everything). So I preordered it and got a Beta invitation, along with a really long download for said Beta. I'm a bit excited to jump into it, given I beat Wasteland 2 before the game actually comes out, since I don't want to play a Beta the week before release.

My questions:
1) Anyone else preorder and already play the Beta? If so, thoughts?
2) Since it's a sub-MMO (meaning you can play the game solo but there's areas that are wide open to players), anyone want to retry the old OO Aces and Eights (#lolTNA)? GTA 5 Online sucking the first two weeks of release, and eventually getting outdated by the next gen versions, killed the last attempt, but it might be fun to try it again (given you have an X-Box One like myself, CiG, Punker, Gordus, and every other hip, cool gamer on these boards...even though I think the extent of our gaming together has been that me and CiG were on the same team in Black Ops once and I accidentally invited Gordus to a "Gaming Party" while I was trying to start Fable 3).

Of course, this game could also wind up sucking, too. But from everything I hear (and don't hear), this will probably wind up being very good.

I'd be down... I was curious to try out the beta was didn't get a chance to. I love the Tom Clancy games. Is this the one that was originally going to be a Rainbow Sis title?

I was a bit bummed when they announced this would be an online-only title. Because you mentioned Titanfall, but Evolve was another one that turned out to be a flop. I usually prefer games to have a single player story as well, but I'd like to try this one out.

Spent a few hours playing it today. It is...unique. The multiplayer aspect is relegated to two parts: mission co-op (which you don't ever really have to do) and the Dark Zone (a part of NYC that is something between a frenzied free-for-all and a co-op raid-like environment). The Dark Zone seems nifty on paper: go in, kill tough AI opponents, find crates of loot, and get it out, knowing full well another player could kill you and steal what you got, all the while marking players who decide to go that route so that other players can hunt them down.

But the story portion can be done purely solo and is a weird cross of shooter and RPG that strikes me kind of like a third person Fallout 4, except with RPG loot and actual, real weaponry and "armor". Plus it lets you adjust mission difficulty for better loot payout, which is nice.

It seems like it got what Destiny got wrong right, and it is actually pretty fun.

I sent some stuff back to Gamefly in hopes of getting it, but it looks like they haven't received the stuff I sent yet. Do you think it's worth picking up, or just wait and see about getting it via rental?

With a game like this, I would advise rental only because it is a very unique game, and those are typically the ones people will either love or hate a day into playing. I'm thinking I'll lean more towards the "love" portion of the crowd, but in looking for how to get all my preorder gear, I noticed a lot of people (or possibly just one nerd with a lot of hate) in the "hate" camp...but also as many in the "love" camp.

So, yeah, rent it first and by the time you get an opinion on it it will likely be time for it to be on sale.

Most of the people, from what I've seen, "hate" this game because it doesn't play like Tom Clancy Rainbow 6, version 123213987. "OMG, you can't kill enemies with 1 headshot, this game fucking sucks!" It's an MMO. It has stats that make you more accurate, do more damage, take less damage. Boss enemies in instances (dungeons, flashpoints, whatever this game calls them) are bullet sponges. If you can wrap your head around that, and love cover-based shooters and MMO games, I think you'd enjoy this one.

the Dark Zone is a really neat idea. What they envisioned was: you (and friends, ideally) go in and kill random NPC groups for loot that's better than anything you can get in the pve zones, then you have to get that loot to an extraction point. But the loot bags are highly visible, and anyone can attack you to get it until you extract it to your base camp. The people who kill another player are labelled "rogue agents" and a bounty is placed on them for all other players in the zone. In beta, at least, the reality was that a few douchebags would camp the entrances, shoot people juuuuuuuuuuust enough to get them to fire back, but before turning rogue, and when the player they attacked actually turned rogue, the douche would finish the kill and collect the bounty reward. I haven't gotten that far in the live version, not sure if that has been fixed yet.

Gave the Dark Zone a whirl today and was aggravated, but in a good way (I think?). It looks like the PVP aspect turns players into a Rogue Agent only after they kill another player instead of just attacking them. From my experiences, there really wasn't a lot of that, though I entered into the 9-14 bracket (at level 14).

Extracting the loot got aggravating, though. In fact, getting to a point where you could actually get loot worth getting got aggravating. But it took me less than 20 minutes to hit Rank 10 to actually open things that had loot worth getting, so that was nice. The Extraction Zones were the real pain. There were two accessible ones in my bracket. One was on the roof of a garage that was accessible only through the garage or by roof access. It's way too exposed and the enemies just rush you the second you signal for an extraction. Needless to say, no one uses that.

The other one is in the middle of a street. That one was the more popular, with players extracting stuff all the time and covering each other as enemies rushed it. No one turned on anyone, mainly because most of the loot probably wasn't worth going Rogue. Though, unfortunately, one player killed another on accident, so I had to put him down because he was evil and also there was an achievement for killing him. Also unfortunately, after I did that, I tried to sniper rifle kill a random rioter and some lowbie ran in front of the bullet. So I had to kill my way out of the parking lot so they didn't try to start thinking I was evil.

This game? Loads of fun.

I know you said rent it first, but I was at Target today and couldn't resist. I had a $40 gift card anyway. I got tired of seeing a bunch of people on my friends list playing it, and feeling left out.

And what do you think? A buddy of moline showed me this not too long ago when he was staying with me and I wasn't entirely sold on it. Mainly because the Dark Zone was just run by high level bullies that were merciless for no reason.

We should be getting the "Survival" DLC this month, kind of curious where they will go with this; ie will it be a play format, or some additional maps like the "Underground" gave us.

I'm digging this game, and it still seems to be pretty well populated... The Underground definitely added a lot, but man do you have to really grind it out to get up in Underground levels. Not sure if it was an update, something level specific, or just crazy luck of the draw (it may be that as one of the first underground I did was some kind of Riker's underground dance-techno party that I've never seen again) but I've found that they seem to be rolling out some new Underground map areas (the mall), or flipping current maps so that you are doing them backwards to what you used to, which is a small thing, but does freshen stuff up.

I really can't stand the "sickness" modifier... it's doable, but unless you have a regular group that knows what it's doing you can wind up with some really crappy random groups that don't know what they are doing... although this is true of any mission, such as the destroy the weapon stash's... a lot of people seem to just ignore the countdown in favour of playing it safe, which of course = death.

You don't really need to ever go in the darkzone (well, to the best of my knowledge anyway), which is good... cause again, unless you have a regular group and are going solo it's frustrating to get picked off by a rogue group that more often than not sounds like they are 14.

Those three new missions that added above ground (dragon something, sky something, and I can't remember the last one) are good... but super-tough... I haven't been able to beat them yet.

For those that don't have this, I'd recommend it... but maybe a bit better if you know someone, or multiple people who already have it... Unfortunately I don't; my only other buddy who picked this up did so on the PC, and I've got an Xbox One... Still, lot's of fun, and a good way to waste a lot of time.

Anyone on here still playing this?

I wouldn't mind revisiting this game. I enjoyed it, but the baby was born a few weeks after I bought it, so I didn't really get too far into it before other busy responsibilities got in the way. I can't even remember what level I was-- I want to say less than 10. I had a lot of fun with it though, and now that things have fallen into more of a groove lately, I have more time to pick this up and give it a go again.

Flash-- I've got an Xbox One as well. If you wanna get a game going, let me know. Maybe we could get a few others from here in on it as well.
