RIP Muhammad Ali

I remember watching him on Wide World of Sports, beat George Foreman. I hated what he did to Joe Frazier, a genuinely decent man. Those fights, concluding with the Thrilla in Manilla, took their toll on both men. The Manilla fight was on closed circuit TV. I had friends who went to see it and came back unbelievably pumped up over what they saw. The 13 rounds of beatings each fighter took well...Ali is said to have said if Frazier had gotten up for the next round he wasn't.

The times are a different, I can't even name a Heavy Weight champion of the last decade.

And this was in the top 40 rotation in the early 70's.

He was The Greatest.

Yeah, it's amazing how much boxing has changed... I was never a huge fan, but guys like Ali were a part of history... Now not so much with the current crop.

Jim Ross tweeted a story from Gorilla Monsoon about Ali:

The irony is that today would have been Gorilla Monsoon's birthday.

I don't buy Gorilla told JR anything. It's extremely unlikely their paths had crossed at the time. (ETA: yep, Ross was a referee in MidSouth, just starting in the biz. Zero chance Monsoon told him anything before.)

I remember that. At the time WWWF filmed weeks of TV in Harrisburg, PA all at once. Monsoon hadn't wrestled on TV In a loooooong time. His phrase was "Ali doesn't know a wrist lock from a wrist watch"

Wide world of sports, once again, must have had the incident the Saturday after it happened. However it showed up on TV weeks later in the regular rotation.

And soon after Inoki kicked the shit out of Ali's calfs in one of the saddest shoot fight ever
