Count me in as really liking it too. I agree with salmonjunkie, if Death Magnetic was getting back into the more progressive territory of Justice,
this sounds like it's a nod to the more straight-forward, less bells and whistles style of Kill 'Em All.
And a funny story: I have my iPod playing throughout the day while at work, but usually keep my listening habits to stuff that's not too
heavy/profane, as I don't want to frighten any of my coworkers. So when my brother texted me yesterday about the new Metallica track, I looked
it up on YouTube via my iPod. Figuring that it wouldn't be anything too crazy since it was the first single (such as how "The Day That Never
Comes" off of the last album was pretty radio friendly), I cranked it up and then heard how fast/heavy it was and lyrics like "we're so
fucked...shit out of luck!" Needless to say, I immediately lowered the volume significantly after that.
Nash is only a few inches bigger than JBL and depending on how stiff he gets Punk should be able to take it. -JB King, meant in a totally non-sexual

I'm still pondering. I like that there are some cuss words since James won't even swear during his on-stage banter anymore.
That said, I fucking LOVED "The Day That Never Comes" the first time I heard it. I was thirsting for Metallica to do some epic shit and then I
heard that intro and almost cried. This is straight to the point and I'm all for that; will look forward to more.

Just thought I'd bump this thread back up because I picked up the new album yesterday. I'll need to listen to it a few times before giving
a full analysis (especially since it's over an hour of music), but my early opinion is that the first disc is really kickass, while the second
disc has more filler material. The final track, "Spit Out The Bone," is fucking awesome and I like "Confusion" as well, but the other four songs
on the second disc just came across as more generic/filler-ish to me. The first disc is great though and I'm digging all of the songs off of it,
with "Atlas, Rise!" probably being my favorite of the bunch.

Random Metallica fun fact: before the release of their latest album, Robert Trujillo had been in the band for 15 years but only played on one studio
album (Death Magnetic). I think that has to be some kind of record.

I finally picked the album up. I really like it. I already like it more than Death Magnetic, which I liked as well. Right now, Moth Into Flame and
Spit Out The Bone are my favorites. The production is really good and is sonically superior to the over-compressed mix of Death Magnetic as well.

Yeah, after the non-production of St. Anger and the compression issues with Death Magnetic, it's great to hear Metallica sound this good again

And after owning Hardwired for a few weeks now and giving it multiple playthroughs, I think my current assessment is still the same as my original

Late to the thread I started, marriage will do that to us.
Overall, I think the album is solid. Spit Out the Bone is a particularly good finisher. Overall, I kinda like Death Magnetic better, though, if only
because it feels less predictable. I kind of knew where the songs were going on Hardwired the first time I heard them. That could be because
I've heard so much Metallica in my life that it's programmed into my brain, but I don't know.
The band sounds great, though, and Hetfield's voice sounds amazing. Very solid.

"The Day That Never Comes" would rank astonishingly high in my favorite Metallica songs ever for a post-AJFA and/or Black Album song (don't
torture me by asking where it would rank but it would be quite high with the classics) and I haven't had that same feel from any of the new
songs (though many of them are damn good as discussed). Solid album though nothing particularly mind-blowing. I'd give it a solid B-.

Me and some fellow old-fart-metalhead friends recently formed a Metallica tribute band, (of which there are none currently in Seattle.* Our first
show is in June. Yay! We're called Disposable Zeros.
*there's a spectacular Metallica tribute band in Spokane that comes to Seattle fairly regularly called Blistered Earth. They recently had all
of their gear stolen from them after a gig in Portland, including a vintage Gibson Explorer. Metallica got wind of this and bought them all new gear.
That's pretty fucking cool.

Load's a funny one because I really kinda loved that album as a 16-year-old when it came out but some of that may have just been my worshipping
of all things Metallica at that time and them taking FIVE FUCKING YEARS from the Black Album to release the follow-up (little did I know that would be
a short break for them in intervening years). My overall album ratings would pretty much echo Thai's but I'd bump load up to 3 or 3.5. I
should actually give that one a listen sometime as it's been quite a while. I agree that Reload was greatly inferior.
Are we not denoting star points for Justice's horrible bass mix?

I've gone back and given St. Anger multiple tries over the years, but just can't get into that album. I actually don't mind
"Frantic" and "St. Anger" but otherwise the songs just sound too repetitive and generic to me.
But I do agree it's one of the more fascinating albums that a commercially huge band has ever released, just because it was so stripped down and
raw. I always say that Metallica got it half right with St. Anger after the Load/Re-Load albums, in that it was a return to a faster, heavier sound,
but the songwriting (and production) just wasn't there.

Ride and Master are both 6 star Meltzer specials. And Justice is nearly as great too, Kill 'Em All has a few solid tracks that still hold up
today. Black, Death Magnetic, and Hardwired are then all kind of in the same 3 star boat. Everything else is trash. And then there's Lulu.
There is no other correct opinion. The new stuff doesn't feel half as inspired. I feel the same way about Mastodon.
I have a friend who prefers Whisky in a Jar-o over any of the older stuff.
