The Super Nintendo 25th Anniversary Thread
So earlier today, I just happened to stumble across the fact that the Super Nintendo was released exactly 25 years ago (August 23rd, 1991) in North
America. In honor of the SNES hitting the quarter century mark, and to help cope with the fact that any of us who actually owned that system as kids
are now old as fuck, I thought it might be fun to do a little reminiscing.
While the original NES will always be my sentimental favorite console of all time (the NES and childhood are pretty much synonymous with me), the SNES
is probably my straight-up favorite console of all time. When you look at the list of quality games that were released for it, it's pretty damn
staggering. This was of course back when Nintendo had major third-party support, so in addition to all of the fantastic games that Nintendo put out on
the SNES, you also had stuff like Street Fighter II, Final Fantasy III, Chrono Trigger, Super Castlevania IV, Donkey Kong Country, Contra III, TMNT
IV, Mega Man X and on and on and on (and on). Even though other home consoles over the years have had video game libraries that rivaled the Super
Nintendo's, I think it still stands as the king of them all.
And a weird fact: the Super Nintendo just missed the 1980's by 11 months in Japan, as it was released in November of 1990 there (as the Super
Famicom, of course). For a system that I so associate with the 1990's, it's kind of mind-boggling to think that it was released that close
to 1989 in Japan.
Nash is only a few inches bigger than JBL and depending on how stiff he gets Punk should be able to take it. -JB King, meant in a totally non-sexual

There's a big age gap between my mom and her sister (14 years) so she was like 26 when the SNES came out. So while my sad 11-year-old self had
to beg and beg my parents for one, her and her boyfriend bought one right when it came out. So she'd have me and my cousin come over, and
we'd just all play the holy fuck out of it.
Is everyone mad here?
Of course they are, and you are too... otherwise, you wouldn't have come here.

Yeah, I remember my brother and I not getting our SNES until Christmas of 1991, so those four months of waiting were pretty torturous (especially when
you're 10 years old).
I also recall my best friend at the time, who lived right across the street, got a Sega Genesis that same Christmas. So the last week of our Christmas
vacation from school was spent playing any combination of Super Mario World, F-Zero, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Altered Beast pretty much non-stop. Good
times.

I'm shocked this thread isn't getting more love.
For my money, the SNES is the best damned game system in the history of history. There were SO many amazing games for it that I rediscovered with
emulators:
Street Fighter II and sequels
Mortal Kombat II
Any Super Mario Land
Donkey Kong Country
Any Zelda
Any amazing Castlevania game
Ghouls n Ghosts (which is still one of the hardest games ever to beat - I never could without cheats)
Super Punch Out
Final Fantasy 3
Earthworm Jim
Any Star Wars game
That's just what I thought of in the past minute. The SNES just took the original and just made it fucking awesome. Platforming was never more
fun.

Yeah, this thread did end up being a bit of a flop, didn't it?
And I totally agree about the insane amount of quality games for the SNES. Given how games are more expensive to produce today and home consoles
generally have smaller game libraries compared to the past, the SNES' catalog is something we'll never see again.
And if Nintendo ever decides to do a SNES Classic like they did with the recent NES Classic, I'll buy one in a heartbeat (if you can actually
find one on store shelves that is, unlike the fucking NES Classic).

I meant to post on this a while back but forgot about it. I also LOVED the SNES. I got the a Sega Genesis when it first came out and my neighbor got
the SNES. When he moved a few years later, I sold my Genesis and bought an SNES with Secret of Mana and Super Bomberman so I could get the multitap.
I had never played Bomberman before but fell in love with that immediately. My house became the party house for a while because of 4-player Bomberman
and 4-player Madden.
Here are my favorite games for that system:

And the scary thing is that that's not even anywhere near scratching the surface of how many great games there were for the Super
Nintendo. I could literally make a list of ten different SNES games that I love just as much as the ten that I listed there.

I downloaded Super Star Wars on the Wii a few years back and was quickly reminded of this fact. I couldn't even get past the Sandcrawler level
and the part where you have to jump up the moving platforms while avoiding enemies and gunfire in order to get on top of the Sandcrawler is so fucking

When the Super NES came out, I asked my parents to get me one for Christmas. The employee they talked to at Target convinced them to get me a Sega
Genesis instead. And though I definitely appreciated the Genesis (Streets of Rage 2, Phantasy Star IV, Eternal Champions, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, etc.),
I don't know what the fuck that person was thinking. I eventually managed to save up enough to buy one myself.

Funny thing about my childhood was that I never ASKED my mother to buy consoles for us, until she actually manned up one July afternoon in 1999 and
offered to buy me a Dreamcast, which totally took me by surprise. Before then then, she was such a bitch about holding things over my brother and
I's head. It was hard enough talking her into buying us a game, so why bother asking for a console?
The one console she bought during my entire childhood was the SNES, which I awoke on christmas 1992 to discover under our tree. It came with Street
Fighter 2 and Super Mario World. I had already played SNES a bit whenever my bros friend came for a sleepover, but now that we actually had one, we
didn't have a African night/Saturdaybmorning time limit with it.
Over the Kindergarten school year I found myself acquiring all the classics, from Turtles in a time to Aladdin. I loved my SNES and the half grey/half
light purple color it eventually became, showing that I played and took it everywhere. Seriously, there's not a place I didn't take my
SNES to.
I didn't stop playing my Super until about 2005. I always preferred playing games on it as opposed to an emulator, but Wii had a strong VC a
library and that pro controller thing, so i gave in.
