Asuka to Break Goldberg's Record?

I just read a post on CageSide Seats that said that, last night, Asuka just won her 165th match since joining WWE and competing in NXT. She has repeatedly been announced as being undefeated since joining the company, but to the best of my knowledge, it hasn't been making a point of hyping up her total number of wins on TV. Admittedly, I haven't been paying close attention to the weekly NXT shows in a long time, so I may be wrong. The CageSide post on the subject was the first I learned of her record.

Is Asuka closing in on Golberg's record something that the company makes a point of mentioning whenever she wrestles? If not, one has to wonder why that is. One would think that it would take every opportunity to milk her undefeated streak for what it is worth. She's only 8 more wins away from tying Goldberg's record. I think that is worth paying attention to. If NXT booked it right, they would make a big deal out of her win streak and try to set up another competitor as a real serious threat to her streak and title reign in order for her to get her 174th win. I can't imagine that she would break his streak with little to no fanfare.

I am strongly in favor of anything that is bad for Goldberg.

HHH probably doesn't want to bring too much attention to it, lest Vince and Buck get involved and fuck it up.

The other "problem" is that that number is likely heavy on house shows, so unless you pull her from the house show rotation to play out the story in TV only matches being 7 matches out from tying the "record" is a bit problematic to play out (and yes, it's wrestling, so they could always just pretend the house show wins aren't happening going forward for the purposes of this story).

Odds are no one noticed, otherwise the time to start talking about this as a story would have been like 30 matches out.. put a bit of a hey come see the house shows as they matter (they could even film her wins to show on TV) then set up a gauntlet of a big challenger... even if she didn't wrestle on TV every week they do what... 2 house shows a week... so at 2-3 wins a week blowing through 30 matches wouldn't take long and could have given you time to throw some drama into the storyline.

I really think the WWE is missing the boat on using house shows for the TV storylines a bit more... I don't mean storyline developments (which they have done from time to time... see Guerrero vs JBL from 2004 or 2005), but with the brand split they could have done something different with one of the brands, like a win-loss rankings... this would have made the house show matches mean a bit more which might have made them a bit more of a draw if fans thought they were watching something that also meant something, or at least make the fans at the house shows feel like they saw something meaningful.

^^^ agree

I've become a "live event bitch" and only go to local shows if they are televised i.e. Raw, Smackdown, PPV. Since I've always been in major markets, those are by far more frequent than house shows, but the house shows do come through here and I don't go. Just no interest.

She broke it.
WWE acknowledged it. As did Goldberg.

I haven't watched Takeover yet. Did they acknowledge it at all during or after the match?

WWE didn't acknowledge it on air. I haven't been watching the weekly NXT episodes, so this is purely an assumption on my part, but I don't think WWE has ever acknowledged that she was closing in on the streak or that she broke it on television. To the best of my knowledge, it is something that has only been acknowledged on social media.

I know this won't happen since Asuka is the NXT women's champion and will have to drop the belt before coming to the main roster, but I'd love to see the WWE fucking run with this. Like, have her go another year or so undefeated and then have it be a HUGE deal when she finally does get beat one on one.

Also, as a non-regular NXT viewer, does anyone know how inflated Asuka's undefeated record is or isn't when compared to Goldberg's? Given that NXT doesn't do house shows regularly and only has a PPV once every few months, I can't imagine she's really anywhere near 174 wins.

NXT does several house shows a week. Mostly in Florida. They have one going on right now and another one tomorrow.

Ah, I stand corrected then; I assumed that NXT just taped their show once a week and then did sporadic tours. And if she's been wrestling two or three times a week for over a year, than 174 could definitely be legit.

And an interesting tidbit I learned while looking up Asuka's title reign on Wikipedia: in the four years that the NXT women's title has existed, there have been only five champions (Paige, Charlotte, Sasha, Bayley, and Asuka). Granted, NXT is a different animal than the WWE, but that's a pretty astoundingly low number of different champions in four years considering we've seen the WWE title change hands four times in the past four months.

Plus, she wouldn't necessarily have to LOSE to get rid of the strap. Put her in some kinda multi-match where somebody-other-than-her eats the pin, and she decides "Fuck it, I'm going to SmackRAM because losing my title this way and being refused a rematch because of Heel General Manager stupidity is garbahj."

Or alternately, she-herself decides to relinquish the belt because she feels she's done it all, and is going to take the next step on RAMDownLive!, thus becoming the biggest lady free-agent in the history of our sport.

We all know the WWE is capable of 'protecting' people if they want to use the writer monkey techniques they've been honing over the years.

Her win total is not inflated. Between NXT and WWE, she's won 177 matches to date. However, it looks like Goldberg's record still stands. According to The Internet Wrestling Database, which collects and keeps records of as many live wrestling events as possible, Asuka has been in 4 matches that ended in a draw (or no contest / no decision) and has lost three times (See:
Asuka's Win/Loss Record).

She probably hasn't been pinned or submitted yet, so she can still claim that. However, the archive indicates that on May 27, 2016 - a year ago today - at an NXT event in Cocoa Beach, Lana & Nia Jax defeated Asuka & Daria Berenato by pinfall. She also was on the losing side at the NXT Sebring Show on February 27, 2016, when Bayley successfully defended the NXT Women's Championship against Asuka, Emma, and Alexa Bliss in a 4-way dance. And her first loss was actually in a televised match. At NXT TV Taping #176 on January 7, 2016, Carmella won a battle royale in which she competed.

I should have looked this up a few weeks ago before posting the topic, but I must have forgot to do so. Sometimes I forget that the Internet Wrestling Database exists. I find that whoever runs it keeps fairly accurate records, so I'm inclined to believe that her NXT Win-Draw-Loss record of 169-4-3 and WWE Win-Draw-Loss record of 8-0-0 are accurate.

I would imagine that will be how she loses the strap. However, there have already been opportunities to have her lose it this way and they haven't chosen to do it. On the last NXT: Takeover, they even had her pin both challengers at the same time!

I thought the best opportunity to take the title off of her would have been in that NXT: Takeover when she was in a fatal fourway with Nikki Cross, Billie Kay and the other Aussie whose name I forget. Asuka was knocked out on the floor and the two Aussies just finished putting Cross through a table far away from the ring. The smart booking would have been to have them run back to the ring and one of them pin the other and then they would have been "co-champions" so-to-speak. Instead, they ran back to the ring, grabbed Asuka, tossed her into the ring and took turns trying to pin her. That was pretty dumb psychology.
