So I had a baby
I haven't started any threads in a while but in the realm of life-altering events, my girlfriend and I had a now-three-month old baby boy, uh,
three months ago. Things have gone wonderfully and thank God baby and mom have been healthy as can be. I just thought it would be fun to see if any
other OO'ers have any relative newborns or even want to share if they've made it through childhood and survived to tell about it.
A few bits of our experience thus far -
- He was born at 6 lb., 7 oz. and dropped down to 5 lb., 5 oz. at his lowest when we returned home so probably the most stressful part of the first
few weeks was getting him to gain weight back (which in the realm of all the things that could go wrong that early, it was definitely one I would
prefer to deal with). We're breastfeeding so we were having to feed him every 2-3 hours, 24/7 for a couple of weeks. That was pretty insane.
I always wondered how parents adapt to the lack of sleep and it's true - You just fucking do it.
- We thankfully each have jobs with great benefits so she took her full twelve weeks off and I took a couple as well. I was so glad we had that
ability as it gave the three of us a chance to bond and get used to this new life (I'd be remiss in not mentioning that she has a 15-year-old
daughter from a previous marriage who has been adjusting to baby wonderfully).
- He started daycare last week and she went back to work so it was a very big week of adjustment for all of us and not in a great way. The daycare
location is excellent though and is right on my way to work and we really like the staff so hopefully he's at a good spot for the years to come.
Now I'm just bracing for the inevitable ear infections and myriad of other illnesses he may bring home. Also - daycare is fucking expensive.
All in all, fatherhood has been just as amazing as I would have envisioned (and this is coming from someone who never really envisioned having kids as
recently as a couple of years ago). I look at that child and it's like looking into my own soul at times. And then other times he spits up on
my face and that is just as wonderful.

Hopefully you're ok with never having fun or doing anything you actually want to do ever again.
Also even if you do get a chance to do something you like, it'll get ruined in about ten seconds by something.
It sucks. Congrats.
Is everyone mad here?
Of course they are, and you are too... otherwise, you wouldn't have come here.

Congrats to mommy, babby, and the daddy who probably won't be having sex again for at least twelve to eighteen months.
You know, everyone says it's not supposed to make sense, like that's the whole point, dude. And I'm just saying, you know,
that's like an excuse for lazy storytelling. Just don't sell me shite and tell me it's gold, all right? I might be stoned, but
I'm not high. You know what I mean?

^^^^^^^^^^ All of the above!
I did manage to get some sexy time last week. But now I have the fear I hadn't had in quite a while which is "Don't get her pregnant,
for the love of God!!" I don't want to get the big "snip snip" yet and neither does she and she can't really take birth control since
she's breast-feeding so we're pretty limited in our options.
And yeah, I used to enjoy some post-work happy hours back when but that has gone out the window since I'm now the de facto daycare chauffeur.
Even if I could grab a beer for an hour, they may frown on the dad that comes to pick up his baby with alcohol on his breath.

Congrats!!! And I'm sure you have now realized that it is not uncommon for newborns to lose a little weight right after birth. Hopefully the
little fella takes after his daddy and is enjoying the boobs.
Did you try telling your girlfriend that oral sex will help her take the baby weight off?
Well don't, she will kill you.

You know, I'm pretty lucky in that her sex drive has always been at a fairly high level. Our main challenge now is that our house is not huge
(I moved into the house she's lived in the past 10+ years and we're hoping to upsize in the near future) so between the baby sharing a bed
with us at the moment and her daughter's room being right across the hall from ours, our opportunities are quite...limited.

Congrats's Gooker!
Just a quick question; is 12 weeks all you guys get down in the states? (I would imagine it probably varies state to state). If so I really take for
granted what we get here in Ontario (maybe all of Canada?) which is a full year- but that can be divided up amongst the parents as they want (IE dad
takes 3 months, mom takes 9). I think the government pays you like 60% of your wages if you get enough hours in, and some companies top you up some
more. You also get stuff like baby bonuses, and some daycare supplement.... which goes pretty quick based on listening to both my siblings who both
just had kids.
Not knocking what you guys get, just astonished at how much we get up here.... I guess living in the land of taxes that money has to go
somewhere...
I keep trying to figure out ways to adopt like an 18 year old who's just shy of their birthday so I can get the pat' leave, then dump the
kid... FYI, don't put that on the adoption papers.

Thank you sir!
And yes, 12 weeks is the max, at least in North Carolina where we live. That's a good question about it varying by state though. And
I'll tell you what, as the father, even though I could TECHNICALLY take up to 12 weeks, I definitely felt a bit of, um, not really "pressure"
per se, but I think I would've received some strange glances at work if I had taken anywhere near that. As one of my engineers I work with told
me (the guy is old school, with two grown kids), he barely took two DAYS off when his kids were born! So I think there is still that stigma, at least
in the south, that "You're the DAD, why the hell do you need to take that much time off, get back to work!"
A year off would definitely be pretty freakin' sweet. Although I may not go back!

I think even though we CAN take the year up here; I think it's far more common for the guy to assign his time to the lady to take the full
year... I can only think of one friend who took the year off (his wife didn't work anyway and they lived in one of her parents houses, so they
used the time to really bond as a family... and for him to look for a new job); but it is getting to be a bit more common to see the guy taking a
month off though.

That is interesting. But I still like the fact that, on all fronts, dads are getting the flexibility to take the time they need and/or want to bond
with their newborn (assuming they are lucky enough to have the benefits)! Needless to say, I would've loved to take that much time. Alas, now
mom is back at work and baby is doing great in daycare (and mom and dad are paying out the ass to make it happen). So goes the life of the working
couple!
