Okada vs Omega 2. Also: Thanks WWE for making me a NJPW Fan
Pretty damn good, right? Killer match, telling a story over half a year, with at least one more great match to go.
But as an interesting side thing...I think if not for the Club and Styles and Nakamura signings....And probably Asuka too (Although it's
unrelated to this mostly)...I'd be far less interested in New Japan. The WWE has turned me on to what potentially could be a rival by signing
some of their talent.
Couple that with a seemingly lot more coverage in the States, and I find myself watching New Japan more and more. No real huge thing here, I suppose.
It's just interesting how my wrestling tastes have evolved over the past year or so.
Also mostly unrelated: I miss Broken Matt Hardy.
That is all.

I'm way behind on my NJPW viewing but I've become a big fan. In fact, the next match up on my agenda is the FIRST Okada-Omega match from
Wrestle Kingdom. Definitely something to check out if you're looking for an alternative product.

Yeah, Okada/Omega 1 is my current MOTY (I won't even argue the outlandish "6 stars" rating Meltzer gave it, because it really was THAT good),
and 2 was just a hair under that.
What a time to be alive. Also, watch these matches without spoilers.
Kenny Omega is the best wrestler alive today.

What's got me excited is that New Japan is coming to the States - Long Beach, California specifically. The main event will see Cody Rhodes
challenge Okada.
Smart move on New Japan's part booking a recognizable American against the likes of Okada for that show.
I also second my disappointment in the lack of #broken in the world right now.

I just copy-pasted what I wrote on reddit because I'm a lazy fuck...
I just watched this match with no spoilers and found it pretty underwhelming:
Much like WK11 the first 15-20 minutes were hardly thrilling.
Speaking of the first 15-20 minutes of the match they told the story of Okada having a bum leg which he than went on to ignore for the next 40 minutes
or so.
Omega finally hits the one winged angel, but hes an idiot and does it about 3 inches from the ropes telegraphing Okada getting his foot up.
Okada constantly spamming the rain maker like it was a superman punch.
The finish being a time limit draw, I get what they were going for but personally if I'm gonna call a match the G.O.A.T I need a definitive
winner.
All that may sound negative but it was a fantastic match, just not my personal favorite of the year so far.
I think my biggest problem is that I just can not for the life of me get into Okada i just find him bland for whatever reason.

So, what are the odds of Cody actually winning the belt? They went out of their way to show how much of a dick he is by wanting to throw the towel on
Omega's behalf and overall just not believing in him. Omega almost killing Okada only for to Cody to pick up the scraps seems like solid
storytelling.

I think quite high. I'd go so far as to make him the favorite. New Japan clearly wants to make in-roads into the United States, so it would make
sense from a publicity standpoint to have a well-known American (son of Dusty Rhodes) win the title in America.
You could then have Omega vs. Cody with Omega winning the title only for Okada to come out and say, "You may be the champ, but you never beat me."
"She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted."
"The powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned."

They've gone SO nWo with the bullet club these days, it's only fitting they have it split in half over who wins the world championship.
The Elite vs Cody, Wolfpack vs Hogan...
I pay absolutely zero attention to Meltzers ratings, and cannot understand why people get so bent up about it. Who cares if he gives a match 4 or 7
stars? What's it even out of, because he seems to be backtracking a bit on twitter lately to try and make out his ratings were "never out of
5"... so I fully expect him to give something from NJPW 7 stars soon enough.
I enjoyed Omega / Okada 1, but agree that it was too slow at times, and Okada hitting the rainmaker so many times makes it look ineffective. Why get
so excited about a clothesline that doesn't end the match 99.9% of the time?
I feel like they went to the 1 hour draw for the sake of it...
Having watched all of WK11, I didn't feel that as an overall product, it was lightning years ahead of WWE.
I have six invites I can crash out for membership to pwtorrents.net - if you want one, U2U me!

Part of this is a result of unfamiliarity with the product. The Rainmaker has, for years, been very established as an incredibly lethal finisher, as
deadly as the Pedigree. Tanahashi desperately feared the Rainmaker and would go to great lengths to avoid taking it. Plus, kicking out of finishers
is, to some degree, part of the culture and style of the NJPW product on the big stage level.
NJPW also isn't afraid to burn through a guy's move to put a new guy over. The story of these matches is clearly meant to be Omega finally
being the guy to figure out Okada and bring him down, but not quite getting there yet. The draw's not so much about 'having a draw to get
people talking' as it is telling the story that Omega's closer to taking Okada down, but still doesn't quite have what it takes to
finish the job.
Which itself is a callback to Okada's rise against Tanahashi, who was basically NJPW Cena. Okada was the hot young gun, but Tanahashi always had
his number through a series of matches until Okada finally got over him for good to prove himself as the top guy. That isn't to say that
Omega's going to go over for certain in the end - for one, he's still got to be considering trying to snag a WWE deal sometime and New
Japan might not be so fast to invest in him long-term.

Watch more than just Wrestle Kingdom, bro, because NO ONE kicks out of that move.
