Ric Flair Hospitalized

quote:

Pro Wrestling Sheet reports that WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair was hospitalized earlier today due to heart-related issues. Flairs rep has commented on the story and says Flairs hospitalization is due to routine monitoring.

According to sources, Flair was taken to the ICU after he was admitted by his family. Later on, a member of Ric Flairs management team released a statement on social media, writing, Yes, Ric is checked into a hospital for some routine monitoring. No, there is no reason to panic.

The rep for Flair added, Yes, wed like to thank his fianc & the incredible hospital staff who are providing the best care. No, we cannot answer any personal questions. Yes, Ric would want you to go out and have a great weekend Nature Boy style!

Here's hoping Flair turns out okay; I mean the dude's "only" 68... which for how long he's been in the public eye for seems bizarrely young. Still, all those years of living on Space Mountain can't have been the healthiest.

I think I figured out at least part of the reason why he's had money problems... "management team"... he's hoping that's just another word for agent, as if he's still footing the bill for several aides and what not, that strikes me as a bit excessive for a guy who mostly does Indy shows appearances, conventions, and the odd commercial.

Get well soon, you crazy coked-up old bastard.

Seriously though, do people go into ICU merely for "routine" monitoring? When my mom was in an ICU about ten-odd years ago with her own heart condition they made it clear to us that she was standing on a knife edge and things could go either way, as in she would go home in two weeks with no problems or she could be gone in two days.

That was my first thought as well. Like, how many times has Flair been married at this point and why in the fuck is he engaged yet again?

All I know is right now in ICU there's a party going on in Ric's cubicle that rivals one of those nurse-porn flicks from the 1980's. Woooooo! Yeah, baby, come stylin' and profilin' on this here gurney with the one and only Nature Boy! WOOOOOOOOOOO!

It is not my M.O. to randomly show up around here at 4am on a worknight, but I just want to remind everybody that it's not so long ago that many of Flair's cardiac issues came to light,I think with regard to a future ESPN 30-for 30.....

I will not say more for now, but this news was enough to get me out of my slumber and say "Let's keep an eye on this"... speaking from experience, there is nothing super-awful about being under ICU care (I wound up there once, right after my Pancreas Tumor was found, mostly because I was so dehydrated that my electrolytes were off, and my heart might short circuit), but it's also not a great sign.

On the upside, let's all keep making Southpaw Regional Wrestling jokes. Turns outs that Season 2 of Southpaw is the only reason why Jericho popped up on SD a few weeks ago! Good times...

Whilst I certainly didn't get to full Nature Boy level, I did have a pretty Nature Boy-esque weekend.

I hope Ric's gonna be OK. Thoughts, etc.

For what it's worth, If Ric's diagnoses of alcoholic cardiomyopathy is true, it is the exact cause that killed my father. If the timeline ends up beings the same, my dad was diagnosed last November and was dead by March.

However, that was with every doctor telling him to change his lifestyle and him flat out refusing. So if Ric takes this seriously and can recover enough to get home, he can still have a good few years.

But again, speaking from personal experience, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disease and other issues are probably present at this stage, as well.

2017, you took Chris Cornell from me. Don't you dare take the "Nature Boy" as well.

Sounds like he is dealing with alcoholic cardiomyopathy. Essentially heart failure due to years of abusing alcohol. The greatest of all time might be down for the count I'm afraid.

It's serious enough that WWE has gone out of it's way to report it:

http://www.wwe.com/article/wwe-hall-of-famer-ric-flair-hospitalized

I mean, they usually don't report medical stuff unless it happened on their air like Jerry Lawler with his heart attack.

It is reversible depending on how bad the damage is. If they caught it early enough they can reverse it by changing his diet and getting him completely off alcohol.

Rick

Based on news trickling out, it seems that he went to the hospital for routine monitoring" and was moved to the ICU.

I'm really hoping we don't end up changing the name of this thread.

ETA: both TSN.ca and ESPN.com have articles up about Flair.

Again, from personal experience, you are asking a person to change over 40 years of learned behavior, and fight the disease of alcoholism. It can be done, but the odds are awfully tough.

But if anyone can go Broadway with death, The Nature Boy can.

Flair never really seemed like the "learn from your mistakes" kind of guy.

Michael Hayes and Flair's manager are asking for prayers and well wishes for Ric.

I don't want to be a pessimist but god fucking damnit this is not looking good.

EDIT: In order to lighten the mood, here's Ric hand gifting TNA a brand new star with just one promo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ct7IWkiiWgA WOOOOOOO!!!!!

TMZ now reporting that the medically induced coma was to prep him to go into surgery. They have confirmed it with WWE.

My guess is they are putting in some sort of device, be it a pacemaker, CRT or other.

If it is an LVAD, then I think that means he will officially be on the list for a heart transplant, somewhere down the road.

I expect some subtle and not-so subtle tributes from folks on RAW/Smackdown this week.
