themselves. They have the ways and the means to leave the life that is clearly not good for them and they choose not to. I don't want to hear
about their poor upbringing, their loss of role models, or whatever because everyone has problems. Not everyone becomes a joke and a pathetic sack of
human shit like Kurt Angle and the Hardys.
I wonder when they were handed the piece of paper and checked the little box that said, "[ ] Become an addict."
As I said before, no not everyone becomes and addict, well, most do actually but, once something becomes systemic and effects a certain percentage of
a population then you can talk shit about "personal responsibility" and "choices" all you want and it will just float off into the aether.
"Personal" choices are how you handle things with a person. What we have with wrestling is industry-wide. So it has to be handled that way.
But if it makes you feel better to revel in the 5-star matches put on by Kurt Angle and Eddie Guerrero and The Hardys back in the day and call them
"pathetic sacks of human shit" when those same personalities develop dependencies that get out of control because, I don't know, they broke
their fucking neck, you go right ahead. But if you want to look at the thing holistically, if you want to see the big picture, have a deeper
understanding, it may require a little scope and a little sympathy, which, you admittedly don't seem to have a bumper crop of.
The universe seems neither benign nor hostile, merely indifferent.

Or I've lived with an addict and KNOW it is a personal choice. But you keep on living in a fantasy land where we can all sit around a campfire
and sing folk songs and save everyone from themselves. You can care about Kurt Angle and the Hardys more than I do...good for you.

they'll keep you/bring you in.
Oh I wouldn't for a moment presume to think that the WWE would "save" Kurt Angle for any other reason than;
A) They know that the potential shit storm of a former olympic champion who was a long time employee and face of their company OD'ing, or
vehicular manslaughtering someone would probably come about as close to anything ever could to Benoit. I joked about Angle stalking some girl, but in
all seriousness this isn't a well man so who knows what he's capable of doing.
B) A healthy Kurt Angle is probably worth a good chunk of change to the WWE via either a limited return to the ring, or the several DVD sets and good
will press he could do for them. A dead Kurt Angle, or worse yet a KA who's mowed someone down means no money for them, and in reality probably
will cost them money as they'll have to go into publicity mode to distance himself from him (as let's face it... "Wrestler Dead" pretty
much means the headline will be "Former WWE Wrestler..."), to say nothing of them having to go back through old footage for DVD sets in equal
measure to however badly he messes up/number of bystanders he takes with him.
Its in the WWE's own best interest to "save" Kurt Angle, and since he's probably not very likely to take the healthiest route and get
out on his own given his life long leanings towards bat-shit crazy, its probably in his best interests to "need" the WWE (money and fame) as they
could potentially remain a carrot to keep him on the straight and narrow... and thus alive.

Isn't trying to 'save' Kurt Angle the reason they gave him the "go to rehab or get fired" ultimatum?

Was I misinformed or is this history getting re-written?

Professional wrestler talks shop at mall in Tracy

(Antonio Franco/The Oakland Tribune)
TRACY After a lifetime of amateur wrestling, training eight to 10 hours a day, and winning an Olympic gold medal, Kurt Angle flipped on a then-World
Wrestling Federation show one Monday night in 1999 and was quickly hooked.
"Stone Cold" Steve Austin was the blue collar, beer-drinking hero of every man who regularly defied his boss, and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was
becoming the hottest wrestler in the business.
"I didn't want to do Olympic wrestling anymore, I was burned out from training ... but I still wanted to do something athletic," Angle said.
"I figured if I showed my personality, and let go in the ring. I could be like one of those guys."
In 10 short months, Angle defeated the Rock for the world title and was the top "heel" the industry term for a bad guy in the company.
Nearly a decade later, Angle, who is now the champion of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, was in Tracy Saturday afternoon signing autographs for
hundreds of people at the West Valley Mall.
Mat Martin, 28, of Stockton, was the tough looking guy with tattoos up and down both arms. He idolized Angle while on the wrestling team in high
school, and after meeting his hero, Martin was happier than a kid at a wrestling show.
"I used to watch tapes of him in high school wrestling," Martin said. "My coach used to bring them in. He's not the pro wrestling superstar
to me, he's the Olympic wrestling superstar ... I'm shaking right now."
His girlfriend, Reanna Pfeifer, 28, of Manteca, alerted him to the event and said Martin was "very excited" about meeting Angle.
"I was teasing him the whole time in line," Pfeifer said. "I kept saying, 'Let me see your hands' and they were shaking and all sweaty
... He's going to be talking about this all day long."
It was a family affair for the Matuskas. Jeff Matuska, 60, was holding up the end of the line with his daughter Christy Matuska, 33, and his grandson
Jaron Matuska, 9.
Jaron has been a fan of wrestling for the past five years. He's met a handful of other professional wrestlers, but Angle was one of his
favorites.
"He's cool," Matuska said. "He has big muscles."
Big-muscled wrestlers have also caught the attention of Congress, which is beginning its own review of steroids in the industry in the aftermath of
the double-murder/suicide involving for WWE superstar Chris Benoit.
Last month, after failing to appear for a show, Benoit, his wife and child, were found dead in their suburban Atlanta home. Investigators have said
Benoit killed his family before taking his own life.
Benoit wasn't a victim of the industry, but was responsible for his own actions, Angle said.
"As much as I loved him, and what he stood for before that happened, the WWE did not kill Chris' family, Chris decided to do that on his own. I
decided to become addicted to pain killers on my own. WWE didn't do it, I did it. I took responsibility for what I went through.
"We're all independent contractors and we all take responsibility for our own actions," Angle said. "If our job is affecting our lives, and
it's going to drive us crazy, quit."
Angle said there are ways for former wrestlers to make money without "having to beat themselves up" in the ring.
He cited options in Japan, independent shows, his current company, TNA Wrestling, and the public appearance circuit, which can be very lucrative.
He said politicians who want to examine the use of steroids in professional wrestling should give the industry a classification similar to rock stars
and actors.
"If you take the percentage of rock stars and actors who have ended up in rehab, or overdosing, it wouldn't be any different than pro
wrestling," Angle said.
"You cannot put pro wrestling in a real sports atmosphere because we're not a real sport. We're sports entertainment. We're more or
less Hollywood stunt men where some of us can act."

Kurt Angle issued the following statement, following his arrest this weekend for DWI:
Recently, there has been a lot of attention related to the incident which occurred Saturday night in Virginia. I was returning from an iMPACT
Wrestling show in an unfamiliar place, late at night and was trying to find the exit for my hotel.
"I did not believe my driving behavior was reckless or otherwise improper. Apparently law enforcement may have believed otherwise and pulled me over.
I fully cooperated with the officer who clearly recognized me while performing his standard procedures. Subsequent to the stop, I was asked to submit
to a breathalyzer test and passed. I do not believe that I broke any laws and will be entering a plea of not guilty in response to any pending
charges. I hope that we can now focus on more important matters and move forward.
Angles attorneys noted, Our clients blood alcohol level was negligible and was well below the legal limit in Virginia. We will wait to see if the
state even wants to go forward in light of this evidence. - source Slam

Amplifying Kurt's statement of innocence:
* After being pulled over, tested in the field, brought to the local police station, and in the process of being, ummmm, processed, THAT is when Angle
blew a 0.06 BAC. That IS below the legal limit of 0.08.
* To put this is perspective, a guy roughly of Angle's size can enjoy two beers (or two mixed cocktails at normal potency) in one hour, and then
one additional beer/drink per hour afterwards and stay under the legal limit. [Source: a "Drink Responsibly" Poster issued by Anheuser Busch, which
I still remember from college.]
* Synthesis: even giving Angle the most massive benefit of the doubt ever, he had felt the burning desire to consume (x + 1) number of adult beverages
(where "x" is the number of hours between his first beverage and being processed at the station) in order to help him navigate his way back to the
hotel. This is not a burning desire held by most healthy adults. Instead of waiting till he was at the hotel to enjoy Sweet Lady Booze, he got
3/4's "legally" drunk, presumably (from his timeline) while still AT THE EVENT VENUE, and before hopping in his car.
* And the other shoe drops: somebody sent me a link to the local newspaper out there in Bumblefuck, VA, and it turns out the cops there are not fazed
by Angle/TMZ's claims, as the actual police report indicates Angle blew a 0.09 BAC at the scene of the pull-over, and then also failed the basic
field sobriety tests (not chemical tests, the Tests of Physical Coordination). After an hour or more, the test back at the station was the one that
came back 0.06. [Source: http://www.nvdaily.com/news/2011/09/-police-wrestler-had-0091-bac-failed-sobriety-tests.php ]
* Ergo: Angle wasn't "well under" the legal limit, no matter how you slice it. Depending on how sleazy his lawyer is, he MAY get a court to
not recognize the first test, because the equipment at the station is more accurate (or some such bullshit), but even then, 3/4's isn't
"well under" anything, and it seems like 9/8's may be the real number.
* But since 9/8's isn't "well OVER" the necessary threshold either, let's also keep in mind the failed field tests. It could be
that Angle's just a lightweight, or it could be that a professional drinker like Kurt was Matt Hardy'ing his way to incapacitation. But
either way, an inability to walk a straight line doesn't just magically happen to a world class performer.
Rick
EDIT TO ADD: just rifled through my emails for the first time today, and whaddya know?, Angle's sleazeball lawyer will indeed by playing the
"field tests are inadmissable" card. Christ. For your benefit, I will reserve my rant about how our loophole-ridden legal system is increasingly
divorced from common sense for another time.
