What the view from the 6 should be about...

Well, technically for that last tweet; we would have last "won" something 31 years ago (Clark), not 49....

As for Toronto getting the first overall pick... I'm just not that excited about it really.... Auston Matthews is a great talent and all, but after the several "home town" superstars that we missed out on (Stamkos, Tavares, McDavid), and a bevy of very good talent from the area going elsewhere, Matthews feels a bit like a consolation prize, or a bit less impressive.

I don't know... it's weird, I like a lot of American players- Van Remsdyk for example, but you just kinda want one of those local names for the team that you've been hearing about 3-4 years even before they are draft eligible.

Anyway.... not sure if I'd keep him, or trade him; as that first overall pick could land quite a nice haul- and between the promise that Marner and Nylander show I'd contemplate trading him.... Arizona (where Matthews is from) seemed genuinely bummed they didn't get him.... Would a Max Dom and Dylan Strome combo be too much? Too little? Maybe one of them and some of Arizona's other 1st round picks.... I think they have 3?

Hell, who's to say Toronto would even pick Matthews; Patrick Laine is supposed to be every bit much his equal.

Like the OHL's MOP and London Knight Mitch Marner?

Domi is amazing. I own a Domi Knights jersey. The guy is great...but we all ready have Marner, Nylander, etc....and Matthews > Strome. Strome doesn't really impress me. See the Knights whopping the Otters and Strome in 4.

IF they were equal, I'd still want Matthews because he is a center. But most put Auston ahead. Really, you don't turn down a #1 center.

And back to the point about the Leafs losing out on Stamkos, Tavares, etc...July 1st is just around the corner.

No, I agree... #1 centres are few and far between that to not draft one would be silly.

Marner looks like he could be someone really special as well; between him, Matthews, Nylander, and Reilly already being in the fold; coupled with some of the other potential "star" talent we've got, the future does look bright for Leaf fans for the first time in a long time.

I'm a bit leery about Stamkos as an FA... the guy is a great player; but grabbing a guy with his skill on the open market is going to be very costly... like long term plan altering costly barring him really wanting to come here and give us a big home town discount. While he still has a lot of hockey left in him, it's apt to be several years before we have a good team around him, so the window of his best years might be small, with him potentially tying a lot of money in his not so prime years with our potential superstars looking for big raises.

Tavares; whom I can't see the Islanders not doing everything in their power to keep, interests me a bit more... he's got I think 1-2 more years left on his contract. By which point Nylander, Matthews, and Marner would all have a year or more under their belt in the NHL, and would give us an idea if they are Superstars or just star players; which would then allow you to better budget trying to bring a pricey name into the fold.

Guh.... man I hate the cap; the cap basement now is already way more than what some teams were spending before, and I still haven't seen some of those teams go out and grab big names for the most part- I'd rather see some kind of dollar for dollar soft cap, maybe with some kind of developmental penalty going to a team that loses a player... fantasy teams just aren't any fun in a cap world.

Another lesson learned I suppose. The great hairy ape that captains the Caps simply does not care about playoffs. What a rip off.

You know, everyone says it's not supposed to make sense, like that's the whole point, dude. And I'm just saying, you know, that's like an excuse for lazy storytelling. Just don't sell me shite and tell me it's gold, all right? I might be stoned, but I'm not high. You know what I mean?

If the Ovechkin knock is about how the immediate morning after being ousted from the playoffs he was already on a flight to join Russia at the worlds...

I dunno; that might be a bit unfair.... I'm sure they had a plane on standby for him and the other Ruskies just in case, but the season was over, and while he didn't have a great playoffs, 12 points in 12 games would suggest that he was at least trying. Admittedly there's some post season commiserating, exit interviews, and all that stuff that as the captain he should probably have hung around for, and the optics of it look bad... but at the end of the day he's not really doing anything wrong... if it was Crosby going off to join Canada we'd probably be okay with it.

Big day in the NHL, and free agency is still 2 days away...

*Oilers swap former first overall pick Taylor Hall for NJ D-man Adam Larsson.
Don't like this one... the dealing is likely not done in Edmonton with three good to great centremen on the team, and lot's of rumours that Milan Lucic being poised to sign with them.... Hall is a superstar who's only going to continue to get better... yeah he's missed some games because of his physical style, but Lucic is older, and on the down swing of his career (He's still got good hockey in him... just no where near as much as Hall). Hall would only get better as the team got better, and Larsson is probably not going to your number one guy... solid two way, but not in the league of a Duncan Keith, Shea Weber, or PK Subban.

*Speaking of PK Subban and Shea Weber, they've swapped addresses as Montral and Nashville have swapped the two superstar D-men for one another.
Don't much like this one either... Something was always off with PK in Montral between him and the coaching, but the guy's top five defensemen in the league, can probably still get better, has character, and is probably one of the best community ambassadors in all of sports. I love Weber, and he's a bit cheaper than Subban, but you're stuck with the guy until he's 40. Weber is someone every team would want so in the short run it's not a terrible trade, but Weber probably isn't getting better, and is 4 years older.

*Stamkos stay's put in TB.
I like this signing... Don't get me wrong, as a Leafs fan you drool over the thought of a guy like this on your team, and I wish he'd have come home; but I think this is good for him... had he gone to Buffalo or Detroit over Toronto it probably would have hurt his rep for a while in Toronto as we get our noses out of joint, but in staying put he's showing loyalty for the only team that he's every played for. He left a lot of money on the table, and is staying put with a team that looks like it could win the cup for the years to come and only looks to be getting better. Stamkos not coming to Toronto also has it's plus side as well, as we aren't nearly close to being competitive, and it's probably better to grow our team from within and develop our own internal cap system then to bring in a big salary bench mark signing.

As a Leafs fan I think he'd be too expensive, but I'd love to see us go after Andrew Ladd. The guy's a great leader, plays hard, can still help out, and would still be young enough as the team get's better to slowly drop down the from the first, to second, to third line as the team gets better around him. I think he's the kind of signing that could be good for a young team, but like I said he's apt to be $6 million or more, and would want a long term deal... three years at $6m would be fine, but after that you'd want him around $3-4 million and going down... not going to happen.

Doan is an older version of Ladd and could be good for the team as well, but he's more than likely off to a contender if he doesn't re-up with Phoenix to finish his career there... Chicago or Dallas would be my guess.

Dan Hamhuis is someone I would love to see in the blue and white... I think he's capable of some first line d-man minutes, but would probably be best in a second pairing. He's a good locker room guy who can still contribute on the ice, and like the side benefits with a guy like Ladd I think he'd be good for a young team like Toronto, although much like Doan it would not surprise me to see him take a short term mid money deal and go to a contender as he's never won a cup.

Matt Martin could be an interesting pick up... great energy guy who can chip in, but he's probably going to get more than he's worth in the long run.

Ditto on Roman Polak; I liked him when he played for Toronto, but on the open market in a summer that's shy on D-men he's probably going to come in north of $3million, and for a second pair defenseman on the downswing I just don't see it.

Eric Steal is an intriguing player... he'll probably be one of the few guys to come in cheaper than his last deal. While he's 31, he's probably got some good years still ahead of him as your 1A and 2nd line centreman... something the Leafs don't need, so I don't see him on Toronto's radar. I think he's also too expensive for most of the big contenders, and with a cup ring of his own already he's not likely to be one of those 1 year value deals just to win a cup. If he doesn't say in New York, I could see the Islanders trying to lure him over with cap space and a lot of signs that they are close to being a contender. Ottawa, or Calgary could also be good fits for him.
