NHL 2015-16
quote:Tomorrow night is opening night and as a Blue Jackets fan I am in the odd position of looking forward to this season. Plus to add to my nervous
energy the ESPN picks for the season has Bucigross picking the Jackets to win the Metro as well as making the conference finals (Kavanagh also has
them losing to the Bruins in the Eastern finals).
I don't know how to handle this respect from the media....
That was from last year... amazing what 500+ man games lost to injury will do to a season.
This year I am in the same boat. Excited about this year, seeing the potential if we can just avoid the injury bug. Lots of young talent, but the
chemistry seems to be there. Plus we have a fucking Captain. Anyhoo let me list my predictions for the two other hockey fans on the board:
Atlantic:
Tampa Bay (Detroit misses playoffs!!!)
Metro:
Jackets contend, but in the end Rangers
Central:
Blues
Pacific:
Ducks
East Champs:
Montreal over Jackets
West Champs:
Blues over Sharks
Stanley Cup:
Montreal over Blues (Canada rejoices)

I really have no idea, other than the Devils are probably going to suck again. That said, they're retiring Brodeur's number on February
9th. I'm on the notification list for when individual tickets go on sale.

Awards pick first...Domi will win the Calder over McDavid. He's really good, and should get lots of ice time with way less pressure and
attention from the other teams.
A lot of folks are picking Tampa to come out OT the East. The one thing that sticks with me is Stamkos. He has issues with the coach. The market hurts
his value for endorsements (the NHL is not the NBA...market matters). And he has got to want to cash in...but Tampa is near the cap and has the
triplets AND Hedman to deal with.
If they trade him, he goes west.
If they don't...it's going to be the elephant in the room until he signs.
My pick from the East is Pittsburgh.
Yes Columbus had a lot of injuries....but none as crushing as both Letang and Maatta. IF those two guys are relatively healthy, the Pens blue line
looks a lot better.
Plus the team is going to score a lot of goals.
Out West? The Ducks are the hot pick...but I'm not sold on their goaltending, and fuck Kesler. They also have guys who have injury concerns. And
Perry getting suspended or injured on a retaliation hit is going to happen eventually (likely cause of injury? Lucic) which is a concern.
My pick to come out of the West? Nashville. Great defense. World class goalie. And budding scoring star. I wouldn't be shocked to see them go
agrressively after Bozak, Lupul or JVR if Babcock increases their value.
As for my Leafs? They will be competitive but lose a lot. On the plus side The Marlies may be scary good and compete for the Calder Cup in the AHL.
Plus I can walk to the arena and watch Merner play for the Knights....so I got that going for me...which is nice.

This season has gone completely downhill so quick, it went over a cliff. Between my Giants and Jackets, this will be a long winter.
ETA: I have watched most of the games and it is turnovers in their own end resulting in easy goals plus the puck bouncing over sticks when the net is
wide open. They have let up a ton of goals, but I would say that half of them are more the result of the defense falling apart than poor goaltending.
Plus they are getting disheartened so quickly when they give up a goal. Until they get that first win, or come back from adversity, this could be a
long, long season.

Very frustrated with the Kings play - very reminiscent of last year.
Started the season slow which had them looking up for pretty much all of it.
Streaky - they'd go on nice winning streaks and then fall back to a bunch of consecutive losses or a sub .400 span.
Get behind by 2+ goals early in the game and then be forced to claw way back. The "clawing" hasn't happened yet because the first three
games were 4, 3, and 2 goal losses.

And the update is Coach Richards is gone, and John Tortorella is in.... I guess after they go 4-0 on this road trip it will all make sense...

Not that Dallas, Chicago, or LA is bad...but with Johansen, I really like Nashville's chances.
As for the Pens...Crosby is starting to play better. Kessel misses Bozak by the looks of things. Still not sold on the Caps though, so Pens could
still heat up and end up in the playoffs/come out of the East.

I understand the trade, and if Jones is as good as they think, we have a solid blue line for ten years. However I need to look up his contract and
see if we are going to have to pay big to keep him.
I just wish I didn't spend $200 on a Johansen jersey last year.
ETA: Looked at his contract and he is a RFA after this season.... So the money they saved on trading away Johansen, will have to go to him...

Johansen has a $4,000,000 cap hit on a stretch contract. Jones is coming off his entry level contract. I'd imagine a 2 or 3 year stretch
contract @ a 4 to 5 million cap hit is a fair deal, and he'll still be a restricted free agent after that.
The team has plenty of cap space, even with a certain over rated goalie having a $7,425,000 cap hit.
The big thing will be where Columbus drafts. If they get the 1st pick, they'll have upgraded the back end while having a better #1 center. If
not...the no movement portions of Dubinsky, Foligno, Hartnell, and Tyutin's contracts will be tested.

Bob is not overrated, but we will agree to disagree...
If Jones is worth that after he signs the contract, then yes it will work out, however seems like more and more players are getting their money and
then pulling back on the throttle, (see Johansen).
This team needs to pull together and get some consistency and try to avoid having a goalie tandem with a combined 13 NHL game appearances. Because
they have a lot of money tied up in players that have no move contracts.

Pittsburgh Penguins
Is there a bigger gap in talent between the top 2 lines and bottom 2 than Pittsburgh has? First 2 lines all-world and bottom 2 look like Saturday
night beer leaguers. Guess that's what you get when 2/3rd of your salary is tied up in 6 guys.
It's a sick world, and I'm a happy guy!!!

That's why you should only play the best two lines. Like in the good old days.
The whole league's been diluted ever since the league expanded from the original 6 anyway.

The Pens a) took Phil b) gave the Leafs a 1st for Phil...and c) Crosby has been in "fuck this" mode for a while now.
And I should point out...I'm picking the Pens without expecting much if anything from Malkin. If he comes back, they should win in even more
convincing fashion.

You should abbreviate them as the Pengs because Pens too closely resembles Penis. Unless you mean to call them dicks in which case carry on.

Might go with DC just because they were so over-powering all season long from beginning to end. Could be one of those off-years where the first
overall team wins it all instead of getting knocked off in the first round. Hard to see even a goalie on a hot streak being able to stop
Washington's +59 goals-for vs. goals-against differential. A good Florida performance would be kind of funny too, just to see Vancouver fans get
pissed off because they were the morons that chased Roberto Luongo out of town and he's the main reason the Panthers had such a huge season.
And here's the best of what the Canadian teams, all seven of which missed the playoffs this year, had to offer their fans.
You know, everyone says it's not supposed to make sense, like that's the whole point, dude. And I'm just saying, you know,
that's like an excuse for lazy storytelling. Just don't sell me shite and tell me it's gold, all right? I might be stoned, but
I'm not high. You know what I mean?

Wings - gone. And there was much celebration.
Penguins and Caps both looking good, in that order.
Kings have disappointingly been playing like shit. Too much of the "we play our best when our backs are against the wall" - the magic is going to
run out and there's a very very good chance it runs out in Round 1. Yes, 2 years ago we came back from being down 3-0 to beat the Sharks.....
But that doesn't mean it's going to happen again. I think they win game 5 but Sharks clinch in 6.
Anaheim is dangerous. They played like shit the first half of the season and then came back i second half in a big way. They've come back
after being down 0-2 and evened the series, and I fully expect this to end this in 6.
