OO Random Playlist!

So, legend has it that a random playlist thread once existed on OO a few years ago but it was shut down due to essentially becoming a list thread and nobody bringing anything noteworthy to their posts other than listing some songs from their iPod.

Well I'm bringing it back because I love music, I love sharing what I'm listening to, and I love having what other people are listening to shared with me! And I think that we've built back up to a strong enough roster of posters that this thread will hopefully work pretty well and inspire some good discussion. Here are a few ground rules to keep this shit from getting shut down again:

1. Only list 10 songs per post.

2. Provide commentary on at least 5 of them. Why you like a particular song, what it means to you, what you like to do when you're listening to it, what you like to do to your significant other while you're listening to it, what you like to do to yourself while you're listening to it, etc. This doesn't have to be a 500-word story for each one; just however much you feel like writing. But try to make it more than "This song rawks, dude!!"

3. Don't post a playlist more than once every other day. This is mostly to keep some asshole from posting 10 songs, then posting another 10 songs 30 minutes later, then another 10 songs an hour later...that type of thing. However, feel free to comment on other people's playlists as often as you like. That is the primary goal of this thread - DISCUSSION! Which brings us to -

4. You obviously don't have to post a playlist to post in this thread. If you just want to come browse and tell me "Hey Gooker, Song X sucks balls because..." feel free. Just make sure your argument has some substance to it. I believe this thread was shut down last time because it basically became a post-padding affair with no rhyme or reason. We are going to be all about the rhyme AND the reason here!

Those are pretty much the basics to get us rolling. If you've got any other suggestions, by all means, bring them up!

Have at it OO Nation!

I listen to this dude on Youtube because I literally cannot get a copy of his record otherwise, so I just keep watching the damn Youtube.

You'll probably like this song because you've only heard it sampled about a thousand fucking times. Most famously on Eminem's "My Name Is..."

Groovy track, SCSA.

In full disclosure, I've been wanting to start a playlist thread for a while (after really enjoying the one at that other message board that some people here may frequent as well). What got me to finally do it is the iPod quest that I'm currently on, that I was influenced into by a buddy of mine - I'm currently working on listening to every one of the 1,661 songs on shuffle that I've got on my iPod Nano. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Nothing gets skipped, no matter how many millions of times I've heard it. He had 4,000+ songs on his full-scale iPod so mine should be a walk in the park compared to his. Anyway, I figure I'll just post a random ten songs here and there as I work through the quest. Here are the last ten that played (I'm up to song 285. Only 1,376 to go!) -

1. Anchor Song - Bjork (I'm at a kinda weird place in my pantheon of love for Bjork. I think her first four albums - Debut, Post, Homogenic, and Vespertine - are all pretty flawless in each of their own ways. However, her last two albums (one of which was Medulla and included no instrumentation, only vocal work) haven't really grabbed me. Hopefully she can reel me back in)

2. Paranoid Android - Radiohead (I've currently got My Iron Lung, OK Computer, and In Rainbows on my iPod. I love them all and will be adding the Radiohead albums I'm missing in the future.)

3. Fuck You - Lily Allen (While this song is catchy as hell, I agree with those who say it's a little late in the game for her to have a kiss-off to George W.)

4. Walking After You - Foo Fighters (Zzzzzzz....I love me some Foo's and I love me some acoustic Foo's, but this is not one of my favorite acoustic Foo's songs)

5. Kill Caustic - AFI (Still need to get their new one)

6. Kill All The White People - Type O Negative (Two songs in a row that start with the word "kill?" Gloomy)

7. Sexy Plexi - Jack Johnson (Yes, I have some Jack Johnson on my iPod. I only like to listen to it on very rare occasions. Like when I'm studying. Or sleeping. He really does have the "groovy, mellow" thing down pat, I've gotta say)

8. Queen Of Sorrow - Black Label Society (New BLS album apparently coming out in June! Mark your calenders!!)

9. The Warning - Nine Inch Nails

10. Meet Your Master - Nine Inch Nails (See, now this is the fucked up thing with random playlists. I have exactly ONE NIN album on my iPod, Year Zero, and yet two songs from it in a row play on the random 10 I chose for this post? WTF?!)

1. Little Sister Jewel. From Jewels first album, which I do like her as a songwriter and singer on the album, but I think she went to pop after this and I think she is now doing country. But I usually have to be in a certain mood to listen to her, so Ill skip ahead to

2. The River of Dreams Billy Joel. I have all three of his greatest hits albums on my Zune. I can sit and listen to most of them anytime. Occasionally I will listen to all three back to back and listen to basically his life progress through the years. On a side note, one of the best concerts I have ever seen. Not much in the way of effects, but the energy from him and the band fed off the crowd who was really into it. 13000 plus singing along to Piano Man was unreal.

3. Turning Japanese The Vapors. Off of one of the several 80s albums on my Zune. So many of the songs are like this, completely weird, but fun and brainless.

4. Nothing Else Matters Metallica. My only Metallica album, mainly because I dont like them as much as everyone else seems to. Granted they have a few songs that seem to mesh with certain parts of my life, but I basically could take them or leave them. Interesting bit of trivia is that my wife wanted to use this at our wedding as our song when we were introduced. After she told me that, I started to listen to the song closer and realized how romantic the song is.

5. Dont Let Me Get Me Pink. I only have her first album, which is odd because I like most of her songs, even from other albums. I always find it odd on who likes Pink, my brother for example, usually hates my music taste, actually wanted to listen to the whole CD when we visited him several years ago.

6. Mobile - Avril Lavigne. Another one where I only have the one album, but I do like every song on the album.

7. Everybodys Fool Evanescence. This song just is a perfect song for my ex. Which may have something to do with my love of it.

8. My Immortal Evanescence. I had to double check I was still on shuffle, since this is the next song on the album. I like this version much better than the airplay version where they added the rest of the band for the second half. Here it is just Amy Lee and a piano. Very heartfelt and kind of depressing, the signs of a good song. Actually this song brought out a debate between my wife and I, in which we argued if the subject of the song left her, or died. I think died, my wife thinks just ended the relationship.

9. Didnt It Hurt to Hurt Me Expose. My guilty pleasure. Cant help it, I have liked them since High School, my first two concerts. And I just knew that one of the songs would pop up on here to out me. This is from the second of their albums, I liked the first, but I cant seem to find it on CD anywhere. The big plus it has going for it is that the lead singer is Gioia, my personal favorite of the three.

10. Electric Head, Pt2 White Zombie. This is from Supersexy Swinin Sounds, all remixes of previous Zombie songs. The songs on the album are a mix of improvements and fuck ups. This one I do like the remix over the original.

The movie "Idiocracy" was really a documentary.

My Playlist:

1. Chris Brown- What I do ft. Plies- Chris Brown may be a woman beating asshole, but damned if I dont find his songs catchy.
2. Juelz Santana-Swimming in Money- The chorus is swimming in my money like Scrooge McDuck enough said.
3. Freeway-Battlefield- Features a killer sample of Pat Benatars Love is a Battlefield
4. Old Dirty Bastard & Ludacris- Coochie-A nice reminder of how great ODB once was.
5. DJ Khaled & Maff Test- Flip Rock-Just a guilty pleasure song for me.
6. Flo Rida- Finally Here- I mistakenly wrote off Flo Rida as a novelty act a couple of years ago when he first came out, but both Mail on Sundays and R.O.O.T.S are pretty awesome cds.
7. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Cant Stop- If I had too choose one musical act to listen to for the remainder of my life The Chili Peppers would win easily.
8. The Roots- Adrenaline- Most of the live versions are better than the studio version, but a fucking awesome song.
9. OutKast- Hootie Hoo- Off of Southernplayalisticadillacmuzic Hootie Hoo is the first OutKast song I ever heard and probably still one of my favorites.
10. Pennywise-Bro Hymn- Reminds me of getting drunk in the summertime.

hahaha yeah, it's really unsettling how many places that song crops up. It's like listening to Maggot Brain and then putting on any 90s west-coast rap, because suddenly it's everywhere.

Honestly, the one thing that occurs to me every time I hear him sampled is whether the people sampling him know anything about him personally. The guy's openly gay and extremely critical of racism, exploitation of racial tension and verbal violence. It's tough to think of a guy who might be less well suited to being the background hook for a lot of rap.

I'm trapped in my room since I'm hiding from my roommate and friend who are going to this shower thing I decided to bail on, so this seems like as good as a thread as any to post in to kill time. Ten random songs from the iPod playlist:

1. "Combat Baby" - Metric - I want to like this band more than I do. It's got all the qualities of a group I should like, but something is missing - maybe it's the passion level of the lead singer. Still, I had a tumultuous relationship with the last person I lived with, and this song summed up the thrill that came along with loving someone who's trouble.

2. "Being For the Benefit of Mister Kite / I Want You (She's So Heavy) / Helter Skelter" - The Beatles - This is off their 2006 Love mash-up album thing, which I find incredibly fun. I've become a bit Beatles obsessed since getting Beatles Rock Band, and the Love album is a cool way to listen to their music, all in a giant block that gels together. This one track happens to smush three songs together pretty well.

3. "I Only Have Eyes For You" - The Flamingos - A super oldie, the song has an atmosphere and ghostliness to it that oozes lovey feelings and I think it's beautiful.

4. "Bones" - The Killers - It's a guarantee that any Killers album will sit in my possession for literally about a year before I can appreciate or like it, at which point I think it's the best thing I own. I think I'm at about 10 months with "Sam's Town." It's really musically dense, and I'm still getting there.

5. "Dear Prudence" - The Beatles - This song is really hard in Beatles Rock Band. One of the things about the music games that are out now - when you go through and play them instrument by instrument (guitar, vocals, bass, and drums), you learn to appreciate all the things that are going on in a song at any given time. I would've never known when a kick drum hit, I would probably not be listening to how cool a bassline grooves along otherwise.

6. "Selfless, Cold and Composed" by Ben Folds Five - A great breakup song. The strings in it really elevate it to something really dramatic and powerful.

7. "You Keep Me Hangin' On" - Glee Cast - That TV show has me listening to a lot of music I would not be otherwise. It's been a really fun watch, I'm glad it seems to be doing so well.

8. "Genius" - Inara George - She's the singer in the band The Bird and the Bee, which in itself is a project between her and one of the the dudes from Geggy Tah. I consider this an extended family song of that group; the lyrics are a pretty good biting stab at slackers who say they're going to do a bunch of cool stuff but never do.

9. "Bizarre Love Triangle" - New Order - I came into this song through a Karaoke Revolution game. It sounded different coming from my voice, pitch matching following the lin...

Okay, you've got to be freaking kidding me. I just fell off my rolling office chair. While the "every time I see you falling" chorus was playing. What the fuck. Ow.

10. "The Big Guns" - Jenny Lewis With the Watson Twins - This song, and this album, is very Southern heartbreak, without quite being a country album. Jenny's voice, in my opinion, is put to better use in this context than in her stuff with Rilo Kiley. I really, really like 9 out of 10 songs on the 'Rabbit Fur Coat' CD, and if I felt suicidal (I don't), there's some great self-killing music on here. I'm so tragic.

Ow.

I prefer the physical discs because I still have a CD player in my car, and because I don't like being restricted to file type and bitrate. I just checked Amazon, and the price for the import disc is way down from the last time I checked for it, and I guess I'll probably buy it after having a couple cocktails some night.

Okay, I'll play (and interesting lists so far).

The first ten songs that came on my iPod upon hitting shuffle:

1. Outkast "Ms. Jackson" - Loved this song when it first came out, and still do, but I'm pretty much tired of it by now.
2. Faith No More "Mouth To Mouth" - My absolute favorite band of all time.
3. Pantera "By Demons Be Driven" - Badass Pantera song off of an equally badass album.
4. Eve's Plum "I Want It All" - Fun fact: Eve's Plum was a really good early/mid-90's alternative act whose lead singer went on to become pop star Vitamin C in the late 90's.
5. Lil Wayne "I'm Me" - I really don't listen to that much hip hop (nor do I have much on my iPod), yet here's hip hop song number two!
6. Deftones "Passenger" - Great song off of the White Pony album featuring Maynard from Tool on guest vocals.
7. Dillinger Escape Plan "Nong Eye Gong" - Probably the most awesomeness/insanity I've ever heard packed into 1:16. They have a new album coming out in March, can't wait.
8. Down "Learn From This Mistake" - Two Phil Anselmo-fronted bands in the first eight tracks. Okay then. A more mellow offering by Down, off of their second album.
9. Smashing Pumpkins "Rocket" - File SP under bands I was a huge fan of growing up, but not so much anymore. Though I do still consider their first three albums classics.
10. King's X "Dogman" - Ah, I fucking love King's X. Easily one of my top five favorite bands of all time. And not too surprising one of their songs came up during the first ten, as I have 138 of them on my iPod.

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes. I may chime in later with a few songs, but I just really really really want to second the love for Ms. Lewis. I saw her at Bonnaroo - I worked my way up to about the second row of people. Elvis Costello came out for a song. The two of them were maybe three feet away from me. It was a religious experience.

Here's 10 that I've been listening to a lot lately with links to the artists' wikipedia entries and the videos for the songs.

1- Meg & Dia, "Monster"
Most of Meg & Dia's stuff is harmless chick rock but for some reason Monster really got in my head and I love it. I really like Dia Frampton's voice and the song was inspired by/about the Cathy Ames character from Steinbeck's East of Eden, which is cool if you're a literary nerd.

2- Cage the Elephant, "Ain't No Rest For the Wicked"
There's a pretty good chance you've heard this by now. I actually discovered it because the song plays during the opening scene of the Borderlands video game. Its a catchy ass bluesy-rock song and there's something about it I dig.

3- Tegan and Sara, "So Jealous"
Indy rock scene darling lesbian twins who, for some reason, I absolutely fucking love. I don't know if its how experimental their music can be or whether I find their voices soothing or what, but I could listen to them all day and this is probably my favorite song out of a good crop. If you like it I also strongly recommend their song The Con.

4- Taking Back Sunday, "Sink Into Me"
Most of TBS's stuff is just a little too emo for me but this is an upbeat, catchy ass song that hooks you right out of the gate. I dare you to try to listen to it without nodding your head or tapping your foot along the beat. Great song to listen to while you drive.

5- Say Anything, "Alive With the Glory of Love"
Lusty love song from the perspective of a Jewish couple (actually lead singer Max Bemis's grandparents) hiding from the Nazis during World War II but way more upbeat than the theme might suggest. I really like the undisguised lust in the lyrics (but miss black eyeliner, you'd look finer/with each day in hiding/beneath the wormwood, love me so good/they won't hear us screw away the day) but its more of a love song (should they kill me your love will fill me/as warm as the bullets/I'll know my purpose, this war was worth this). The first 15 seconds are kind of dumb with the big drumroll and the "aaaaaah"s but from there this is an amazing little song.

6- Kings of Leon, "Be Somebody"
I know "Use Somebody" is their big radio hit right now but I like "Be Somebody" much better. I just think its a pretty song.

7- The Almost, "Say This Sooner"
Catchy if silly and forgettable hard rock song, the video was what really caught my attention and got me liking the song.

8- Cold War Kids, "Something Is Not Right With Me"
I fucking love this song. Its what I imagine a slow but elegant mental breakdown might sound like.

9- Glee soundtrack, "Don't Stop Believin'" (Journey cover)
OK, so I thought Glee was a stupid show for girls but my wife's friends finally got her into it so I relented and watched the first few episodes and I actually really liked it. Its silly and stupid but also lots of fun and fucking hysterical in parts. And the music tends to be pretty neat. Don't Stop Believin' is one of those songs that you either love or you hate but I really, really dug the Glee version of it.

10- Muse, "Uprising"
If I'll be forever in Jeb's debt for any one thing, its because he's the guy that introduced me to Muse, who is easily one of my favorite bands on the planet. If you told me that everything Muse touches turns to gold I would probably believe you. Uprising is the lead single off their newest album and I believe ESPN was using it quite a bit on College Football Live this past season.

Gee, I wish I was still alive- LuckyLopez R.I.P.

Bachmann: "I haven't had a gaffe... when it comes to the best Republican who take on Barack Obama and not have any clunker in my record to be able to take him on, it's me."

Great thread idea Gooker!

This reminded me of a "CD of My Life" I did for myself a few years ago. I'd been talking with a classmate about how certain songs are forever linked to certain memories from my life, so we decided it might be interesting to sort of chronicle our lives through music. It was actually kind of hard to whittle things down, so we ended up doing double CD's with 20 songs on each CD. Up to 10 songs could simply be random "I love this song" selections, but the remainder had to either be tied to specific memories or representative of important things from your life, and you had to fully explain the importance of those songs as well. It was pretty therapeutic in a way (seems like most of the songs on my CD's related to bad stuff from the past), It was also a great way to get to know my friend a lot better. And of course you get to see the evolution of someone's musical tastes (yours included), which I usually find to be interesting.

Looking over those "CD's" again, I see I need to work on a third one. Last time I updated things was 2003. A lot has certainly changed since then, that's for sure.

Anyhoo, here's ten I'm listening to currently:

1) "Hello" by Evanescence - Definitely like the other songs already mentioned, but THIS is the one on my IPod (also from Fallen). It's just such a haunting track. Beautifully sad. Another simple one with Amy Lee and a piano (and I think maybe some strings towards the end). Should probably be on the soundtrack for "The Lovely Bones" or something. I love most of this album, but "Hello" is by far my favorite. Oh, and regarding My Immortal - I vote died too, but that might be because I attach that song to my dad who is deceased.

2) "Touch It" by Busta Rhymes and like 900 other people in various incarnations - I don't know how many versions of this song exist, but I think I have three. This is an awesome song to have on an IPod when you're on the treadmill. The beat is infectious. The part I love most though is how they whisper for half the verse and then "turn it up" for the second half. It's a clever little piece that makes the song (and all its remixes) stand out.

3) "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen - I never would've known this song existed were it not for Wayne and Garth. I remember some jackass at the bowling alley being pissed at me for not knowing and liking this song sooner. I love how the song is like 900 different songs in one. And I really appreciate Freddie Mercury's voice. I could only dream of having a voice like that.

4) "The Boy's Gone" by Jason Mraz - There is something very pleasing about his voice. Some of his music annoys me, but the stuff that doesn't I REALLY enjoy. This song is like a good beer that goes down smooth. Even though I love his voice, it's the music underneath, at least with this particular song, that I enjoy the most.

5) "Don't Take the Girl" by Tim McGraw - At the risk of sounding , I'm going to admit that the first time I heard this song I got a little misty. Country is generally not my thing, but when I accidentally heard this song for the first time I went and bought the single the next day. It's such a beautifully sad song, musically and lyrically. I also love how the story comes full circle. Little things like that help me forget I'm listening to a country song.

6) "Lost in your Eyes" by Debbie Gibson - Goddamn if this didn't come out right around the time of my first big crush. Debbie was always great for writing catchy pop tunes and simple yet effective ballads. She was also the kind of girl you could take home to mom. Tiffany just seemed kind of trashy. Of course this was before I knew that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I like how this song slowly builds throughout. It just goes uphill from start to finish.

7) "Can I Get A" by Jay Z, Amil, and Ja Rule - I'm STILL not sick of this song. Every time I hear it I immediately start bouncing in my chair. It's a reflex at this point. Just a completely catchy tune that is great at any party. Plus how can you dislike a song with some chick telling you what you need to do before she'll put her pussy on your mustache?

8) "No More Drama" by Mary J. Blige - Never really liked her early on in her career, but man have I grown to enjoy just about everything she does. She's got a killer voice. This is my 9/11 song since it came out right around then. Great choice of a sample (Young and the Restless theme) to make it instantly recognizable to many people. The last minute of this song gives me chills every time I listen to it. She's got a hell of a knack for transmitting emotion through her voice.

9) "I Just Haven't Met You Yet" by Michael Buble - Today was the first and only time I've heard this song. I've always loved his voice, and when I think about my pretend music career I see myself being just like him. I posted on FB that if this song is not the theme to some romantic comedy in the next year or two then I'll eat a bug. I've had this song in my head all day. It is so fuckin' catchy. The video is cute too. He's hot. The chick with him is hot. Something for everyone!

10) "Tyrone" by Erykah Badu - This would be the live version, not the studio version which sucks. I swear I was an angry black woman in a past life or something, because I have absolutely no reason to identify with this song at all yet somehow it gets to me. My neck starts crankin'. My finger starts wavin'. I'm all like "Oh hell no!" and "Preach on sista!" And when Ms. Badu tells her no good, cheap ass man to call up Tyrone to get his ass over to help him get his shit out her house, I'm all like "Mmmmhmmm! You tell 'em girl!" And when she adds that he can't use her phone for that call, I'm all like "Damn straight girl! Fuck his broke ass!" Love this song to death. The studio version loses all the fun with the interplay between her and the crowd.

One more thing:

I REALLY love their sound, but ESPN/ABC totally ruined that fucking song for me. It was played going in and out of nearly every goddamn commercial during every televised college football game for a good month straight. For whatever reason, I happened to be watching a lot of ESPN/ABC games that month I guess, so I heard it ad nauseam. It's a great song, but I want to find the person at ESPN/ABC responsible for playing it 9000 times and punch him/her in the nuts/ovaries.

I don't know if its how experimental their music can be or whether I find their voices soothing or what, but I could listen to them all day and this is probably my favorite song out of a good crop. If you like it I also strongly recommend their song The Con.

I don't know what it is, but whenever I listen to Tegan and Sara, I can't stop thinking about Ween. Then I get mad that there is not more Ween out there and I end up being mad at these girls for it. Then I go listen to Ween.

Oh hell yes!! Have you heard the whole live album "Tyrone" is off of? It is seriously awesome and has some great performances. "Tyrone" probably is the pinnacle though. I remember the first time I heard it on the radio back in the late 90's I couldn't believe the local "urban" station here, which usually plays complete crap, was actually playing something that great.

Yeah, I listened to the Erykah Badu Live album quite a bit back in the day. When I was studying for my comprehensive exams in school I listened to three CD's repeatedly (so much so that they're forever burned in my brain as being associated with that time of my life):

Erykah Badu's Live
Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory
Fiona Apple's Tidal

If I do another list I imagine something from the latter two will be on it.

I fucking love this song. Its what I imagine a slow but elegant mental breakdown might sound like.

Do you have Robbers and Cowards? The whole album sounds like either the signer is wasted or wishes he was. Amazing ending song, Rubidoux.

Here is with the first few (awesome) seconds cut off. I love this album.

I've posted a few times about them here and on Facebook. Love 'em. Got tuned into them same way as you (well, the commercial for Borderlands rather than the opening track on the game itself), and liked the song for the same reason you did.

Pick up the disc (or download the full thing) if you haven't and are just listening to that song. While that song stands apart from most of the disc in its sound, the rest is quite good.

My 10 year old hears it in the car with me all the time and I catch him singing along to many songs, which is cool that I'm influencing what he likes. Except when I hear this coming from the back seat:

You're a no good lazy motherfucker
Gotta a shit job you worthless motherfucker

We skip "Back Stabbin' Betty" now when he's in the car, which is unfortunate because I really like that song.

As I continue my iPod listening marathon -

337. Sleepless Again In Flames (I finally got to see In Flames in concert this past October on the last show of their tour and they freakin' tore off the roof. It's bands like them that make me wish I lived in Sweden.)

338. Calling Grace Tarja (She's the former lead singer of Nightwish and someone I really wish they would reunite with. Their current singer Annette is good but Tarja is magic)

339. Black Gives Way To Blue (Piano Mix) Alice In Chains (Absolutely beautiful song but I stand by my claim in the Alice In Chains "Black Gives Way To Blue" thread that I wish Elton John did more to make it sound like it's Elton John playing piano on the track)

340. Roses Outkast (I wonder when/if they're going to reunite and come out with new music. I've been on a pretty big Outkast kick lately and, though I've never given Southernplayasticadillacmuzik a proper listen, ATLiens, Aquemini, Stankonia, and the double album are all pretty much classics in my eyes)

341. Me, Im Not Nine Inch Nails (I got to see NIN this past summer with Jane's Addiction and holy shit was that money well spent. Both bands were awesome live, even with NIN opening and having to play in the daylight (which was very "un-NIN" to me). Throw in the fact that it sounds like Trent and co. are packing it in, at least as far as performing live, and I'm extremely glad I got to experience it)

342. Lords Of Destruction Black Label Society

343. Slave Weezer

344. Treasure The Cure (Off of the under-rated (in my eyes) Wild Mood Swings album)

345. Justice In Murder Coheed and Cambria

346. Wake Up Coheed and Cambria (Apparently I'm entering the "Coheed" section of my shuffle)

I agree with Dr. Death, this song is awesome, and I'm digging the album a lot. I REALLY like Tiny Little Robots. Awesome song.

Ok, quick list. - from my iTunes, not my iPod.

1. Cake - Short Skirt, Long Jacket - The video to this song is great. I know some people LOVE Cake. I don't. But I do like some of their stuff. This song is one of my favorites from them.

2. Black Keys - Lies - I like their album. Nice blues rock. Saw them last year at Bumbershoot. They're nice live. I like this song, but I'm not in the mood for it right now, so I'm skipping it.

3. Daniel Mudford and Pete Woodhead - You've Got Red On You: Shawn of the Dead Suite. I've never listened to this song. I've never listened to this album. But I love the movie!

4. Barry White - Let The Music Play

5. Them Crooked Vultures, No One Loves Me, And Neither Do I - This album is one of my favorites of last year. I like this song so much that I dissected it to learn it a few weeks ago, and that bridge that leads into the coda has this really cool switch every 3rd phrase in a song that is built in 4s. It's fucking wicked.

6. Tiesto - Flight 643 - ugh. I had a weird nostalgic desire to listen to old Tiesto a few months ago (he was new to the scene at the tail end of my raver days) and ended up downloading some of his newer stuff. Meh. I don't feel like listening to 9 minutes of four-on-the-floor right now, especially mediocre four-on-the-floor from a terribly overrated DJ.

7. Maria Bramford - Super Confident People - this is not a song. It's a track from her comedy album. I have a lot of comedy albums on my iPod and iTunes. When the band's on tour and I have the late night drive, I listen to comedy to let the time fly by. It's very effective. I actually haven't listened to this album yet. I'm going to have to give it a full listen soon.

8. 30 Seconds To Mars - Attack - This is one of those albums where I listened to some songs a lot, and skipped over some songs all the time. This is one of the songs I'd skip. It's not bad, but doesn't do it for me. Funny thing, I sang "The Kill" at karaoke last week. Even hit the high notes. Leto's got a hell of a high voice.

9. Hercules and Love Affair - Blind - I've never heard this song in my life. It's from Pitchfork's 100 Best of 2008, which I downloaded and never finished. This song sounds like it belongs at a gay bar. (so does the name of the band) There are a good amount of songs that belong in a gay bar that I dig. After a minute and half with this song, this is not one of them. Stupid Pitchfork... I need a different #9

9a. Fleetwood Mac - You Make Lovin Fun - It's aight. I'm not a huge fan of them, and I don't rant and rave over Rumours, but it'll work.

10. Ice Cube with Dr. Dre, MC Ren - Hello - Two decades later, I still love this gangsta shit.

quote:
Joeldacat

I really like Metric a lot, but I know what you mean about all the qualities of a group I should like with something missing. Live It Out was a great album, too, and their latest, Fantasies had some great stuff, too, including a great lead single. But yes, I know what you mean.

I know I'm doubleposting, but I had to say, I've kept the random playlist going on and Gogol Bordello's Super Tarantala just came on. If there's any band you need to see live, it's Gogol Bordello. So much fun.

A lazy way to describe them is a Gypsy version of Flogging Molly. But better.

I'm probably not going to bite on a full album just yet, but give me a good track or two off those albums and I'd love to give them a listen. I've heard 'Poster of a Girl' and 'Monster Hospital' many times... those fall into the same "good not great" mire, so what stands out off 'Fantasies'?

As dumb as this is going to sound, I really didn't appreciate this song until they added it to Rock Band. Now I like it a lot. It borders on ridiculous exactly how much new stuff I get turned onto by a silly video game, but after nearly shredding my arms off trying to play "Attack" on expert I definitely have an admiration for the song.

And Gogol Bordello is indeed awesome. One of my best friends in Ohio got married in October and invited me to the wedding. All of her bridesmaids wore purple dresses and when they came in for the reception she had the DJ play Gogol's "Start Wearing Purple". It was pretty awesome.

Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz are two of my favorite comedies (?) of all time. Not sure how much you can call them straight-up comedies since both are fairly dark and have such great subversive humor. I want those boys to riff on another movie genre. And soon!

Nearing song #500 on my iPod QUEST!!

491. Gasoline Dreams - Outkast - When you think of Andre 3000 wearing Braves jerseys and straight-up rapping in the early days, then go to him singing and wearing silver wigs in the later days...it's really amazing what a bizarre progression that was.

492. The Kinslayer - Nightwish

493. Dirt On The Grave - Black Label Society (BLS for the rest of my posts)

494. In The White - Katatonia - First heard of them on the Blabbermouth website (which has introduced me to a few heavy bands) and really dig what they do. Just dark, moody, sometimes melodic/sometimes heavy, hard rock. Just the way I like it! Don't listen to them if you're feeling suicidal or their high level of melancholy might push you over the edge.

495. Buried Alive By Love (Live) - HIM - I know HIM has a lot of detractors (much of which is due to the whole "Bam Margera" connection as well as the influx into society of the Heartagram) but I freakin' love this band. Straight ahead hard rock. And all their songs are about love and death. How can you not love it?

496. Close To The Flame (Rapulla Tapes) - HIM - This song was made for doing it. And doing it well.

497. Hell Is High - BLS - Their last album was a little bit sub-par compared to past ones. Hopefully now that Zakk is sober, the next one will be a true return to form.

498. It's All Tears (Live) - HIM

499. Medicine - Monster Magnet - One of the best live bands I've ever seen.

500. Ignorance - Paramore - I've never gotten into much Paramore but I fucking love this song. If you look up the word "catchy" in the dictionary, it's got this song next to it.

EDIT - Since "You Are What You Love" just now came on my iPod, I meant to add my two cents to all the Jenny Lewis love from earlier in the thread. I was never too into Rilo Kiley until the last few years and her solo album was the first thing I got by her and I was instantly sold. Beautiful voice, great songwriting...she is awesome.

And I had a crush on her when she was in "The Wizard" so we go way back.

Off of 'Fantasies', I like "Help, I'm Alive" (also find their acoustic piano version), and "Gimmie Sympathy" the best. I know they're two of the singles, but there they are.

From 'Live It Out' check out "Empty", "Too Little Too Late", and "Police and the Private"

Also, from 'Old World Underground', their first single, "Dead Disco" and the dance mix of the same song are cool.

They're not too bad live, either. But I can think of a bunch of bands that are better.
