MLB 2011 Official Thread!!!! AKA the thread that most needs ZombieLucky

So who else is super excited for the start of baseball season?! After spending my first 24 years of life in New England it's going to be different rooting for the Sox from 3000 miles away.

Anyway some predictions:

NL
East: Braves
Central: Brewers
West: Rockies
Wild Card: Giants

That's right no Phillies. Their offence and bullpen are going to be their downfall

AL
East: RED SOX
Central: Twins
West: A's
WildCard: Devil Rays

I hate the Yankees

NL Awards
MVP: Jason Heyward.
Cy Young: Zach Grienke. I know he is hurt, but he is still going to make it happen

AL Awards (Homer Division)
MVP: Youk. GRIT!
Cy Young: Jon Lester

Kershaw ruled hard last night. If he keeps that up all season, he'll finally get some much deserved recognition. I think the win last night means we're the champs now... unless that was a non-title match.

There is a quote from Joe Posnanski's 32 best players in baseball that I feel like I should share. Hilarious and makes me want to rethink my Phillies stance

quote:
Ive decided that some time, when none of us were looking, Cliff Lee went to a beautiful lake with crystal clear water, a remote and spiritual lake surrounded by mountains, and he asked the ferryman who took home across if he could stay on the boat and learn the lessons of the water.

Please let me stay, Lee said.

$*&$#!!#* fine, you can #%@%* stay if you $@#!$# want to stay, said the ferryman, for he was wise and also resembled Tommy Lasorda.

Together they crossed the lake hundreds of times, thousands of times, until Cliff Lee could hear the water speak to him. And what the water told him was the secret of how to become a great pitcher.

And thats why Lee walked 18 men in 2010 and had the best strikeout-to-walk ratio of any man who ever threw 200 innings in a single season.

It really is only a matter of time before Lee starts striking out hitters on only two pitches.

Did anyone on the planet think Baltimore would go 4-0 out of the gate and that Boston and Tampa would both be winningless to start the season. It seems to me like everyone still thinks Tampa is a great team, but I think they'll finish 4th in the East, at best. Their off-season moves were horrible. However, I didn't think Boston would be this bad to begin the season. I recognize that the season's barely begun, but I just felt the need to comment on how strange it is that they are winless and Baltimore cannot be beat.

I also felt the need to mention that the Toronto Blue Jays will own all this season! GO BLUE JAYS!!!

And to think, I dropped him this morning in the OO draft...

Manny Ramirez retired this afternoon. Busted again on the drug policy, he chose to retire rather than get suspended and continue his career.

What a maroon.

As a Red Sox fan I will always love Manny, but dude is a moron. He should have been a lock hall of famer, but he sure fucked that up.

On the other hand, the Sox won their first game! They officially can't be the only team to go 0-162! And they beat the yankees, which I'm pretty sure counts as two wins. 2-6!

A week in and this is already a strange season. Nothing seems to really be going according to plan. I feel kinda bad for the Rays as they probably have a smaller margin of error.

Is it bad that Rick's duel fandom makes me root against the Reds? I find rooting for two teams to be unacceptable and thus want both teams to fail. And the Reds have Arroyo so I should like them

I'm pulling for two teams, this year. My second team is the Phillies, but only because I want Roy Halladay to win the World Series, which is something that he probably never would have had the chance to do if he'd have played his entire career for the Blue Jays. That said, I'm optimistic about the Blue Jays chances to be a strong, regular contender in the very near future. They may even compete for a playoff spot this year, provided the Red Sox continue to blow chunks all year long. The Blue Jays now have an excellent GM and they've changed the structure of their scouting and farm systems with increased investment in both, such that they went from having the second worst farm system in baseball to something like the fourth best in only two years.

It remains to be seen, but there is a lot of optimism that Rogers will break the bank for this team once it's become a regular winner. For those of you who are not in the know, the Blue Jays are owned by one of the biggest telecommunications companies in Canada. Rogers has the kind of money to blow on team payroll and compete with the Yankees and Red Sox to buy the pennant, if it wishes. That said, they've seen how poorly the "trade for or pay for for expensive players through free agency" strategy towards building a team works - see the Blue Jays circa 2005-2007, when they spent lavishly on guys like Lyle Overbay, BJ Ryan, AJ Burnett, Frank Thomas and Troy Glauss - and have chosen a new direction under a new GM, which is to create talent from within and then pay to keep that talent. They are an exciting, yonug team that will turn some heads this year.

Getting back to my original point: Roy Halladay owns the National League!

I have a sinking feeling that my Astros beating the Mets the other night will be the high point of my baseball season. Just to provide the fact that there is a fanbase more miserable than mine.

Even though I am trying to figure out what the fuck is going on with the Dodgers and whether they'll be owned by Viacom or Steve Jobs or Tommy Lasorda by the end of the season.

What still terrifies me is how close that dude was to buying the Red Sox. I feel horrible for dodger fans and really fans of any team that sucks because of incompetent owners. Then again the dodgers fans did just beat a rival fan into a coma. That is some bad karma. That doesn't even happen at Sox/Yankees games.

On the brighter said of things I will be going to what will presumably be my only two Red Sox games this year since they are in Anaheim this weekend. And we have survived Haren and won't have to face Weaver.

So what does everyone think about this whole situation?

quote:
Emotions are still running high following the May 25 collision at home plate that resulted in a season-ending injury to San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean was upfront with his bitterness toward Scott Cousins of the Florida Marlins Thursday during a radio interview on KNBR of San Francisco, calling the contact "malicious." Sabean said he didn't blame Posey for refusing to return an apologetic phone call.

"Why not be hard-nosed?" Sabean told the radio station. "If I never hear from Cousins again or he never plays another game in the big leagues, I think we'll all be happy."

Sabean didn't back down later in the interview; rather, he left little doubt that the Giants are planning on exacting some on-field revenge against Cousins.

"He chose to be a hero, in my mind, and if that's his flash of fame, that's as good as it's going to get, pal. We'll have a long memory," Sabean told KNBR. "Believe me, we've talked to (former catcher Mike) Matheny about how this game works. You can't be that out-and-out overly aggressive. I'll put it as politically as I can state it: There's no love lost and there shouldn't be."

Cousins' agent, Matt Sosnick, said he understood Sabean's anger.

"It's an emotional time for the Giants and I understand Brian's disappointment," Sosnick told ESPN.com's Amy K. Nelson. "But his opinion is in the vast minority. It's a play within the rules and I imagine his opinion would be vastly different if Posey ran over (Marlins catcher John) Buck on a legal play and Buck was injured."

Sosnick confirmed to ESPN.com Thursday night his client had received death threats since his collision with Posey last week, and MLB's security department was notified.

"It's just enough," Sosnick told ESPN.com of the criticism leveled at his client. "Scott can't say (enough) he's sorry that it happened."

When reached Thursday night, Cousins declined to comment on anything related to what Sabean said, and added, "I've said my piece. I feel horrible for Posey. The aftermath of this has not been fun."

Posey suffered three torn ligaments in his ankle and broke a bone in his lower left leg when Cousins collided with him at the plate in San Francisco's 12-inning loss to the Marlins.

Posey, the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year, had surgery Sunday to repair the torn ligaments in his ankle. He had two screws inserted into his lower leg to stabilize the ankle in an operation that lasted about 90 minutes.

The Giants remain optimistic Posey will be ready for Opening Day next season, but admits he has a long road ahead.

Posey hit .284 with four home runs and 21 RBIs in 45 games. Last year, Posey was recalled from the minors in late May and hit .305 with 18 home runs and 67 RBIs in 108 games.

As a Dodgers fan I'll probably come off as biased, but I'd have the same reaction regardless of what team I liked-- they come off as such fucking idiots. Malicious? Give me a break... like that same play at the plate hasn't happened thousands of times throughout baseball history. And it's just like Sosnick (and MANY others since this happened) said-- like Posey wouldn't have done the exact same thing if he was running home with a close play at the plate. Posey not taking the apology call is pretty pathetic too... anyone with a brain knows Cousins didn't do it on purpose, and he obviously feels bad about it. They just need to let it go already. If he's gonna act this way after getting hurt, maybe he should get out of sports and take an office job someplace.

Is everyone mad here?

The Giants are coming off very petty and stupid in this whole thing. Cousins didn't do anything out of the ordinary on a bang-bang play at the plate and Posey only got injured because he used shitty mechanics in blocking the plate. When you're trying to block the plate, you don't put the top of your foot flush with the ground because then you'll get hurt if you get run over. Also, the purpose of blocking the plate is to prevent the runner from making a clean slide; thus, blocking the plate is an invitation to contact because it's the only way the runner can score.

The only thing I'll disagree with from Cousins' side is that Posey would've done the same thing. It's an unwritten rule that catchers don't take out other catchers, especially in regular season games. For an entertaining demonstration of the penalty for breaking that rule, here's Michael Barrett admonishing A.J. Pierzynski.

It's an unfortunate injury to a talented young player, but it's not some grand conspiracy or an unusual situation that requires a rule change. Cousins did what he had to do and Posey handled the play all wrong. It sucks, but it's stupid to hold a grudge over it.

Poor decision on Cousins's part, taking out Posey? Yes.

Malicious? I whole-heartedly doubt it. It's not like there was some huge rivalry between teams and/or players.

I can see Cousins feeling bad, but not sure what he expected was going to happen on the takeout.
He was running full speed and launched himself out of the way. Seems disingenuous to act like he wasn't expecting to hurt Posey.

I do think it was a dirty play. It's been a couple of days, so maybe I'm misremembering, but Posey wasn't even blocking the plate. He was a foot or two out of the basepath and Cousins had to dive away from the plate to hit him.

I don't think they should eliminate contact, but make a rule about trying to avoid it. If a catcher puts himself right in the front of the plate, knock him out. But if you,ve got a clear path, then slide. Pretty dumb of catchers, especially superstars like Posey and Mauer to put themselves on the line for one run.

I am a lifelong Giants fan and was at the game. As the play was happening I was thinking, "the only way Cousins scores is if he takes out Posey." The reasons for this? It's an extra inning game, the ball was not very deep and Nate Schierholtz has an absolute cannon (strong and accurate).

While Posey was not blocking the plate and gave Cousins room to slide (as he has been instructed by the Giants to prevent injury) I think the real reason the injury occurred was because Posey dropped the ball. When he realises he doesn't have the ball he stops turning and his leg is in an awkward position.

I am sure that Cousins thought Posey would hold on to the ball and, as the 25th man on the roster, he couldn't go back to the dugout being tagged out trying to slide around the tag.

It sucks for the Giants and Posey (he is such a leader for this team) but with their pitching will still win the division even if they are only scoring 2 runs a game without Posey and Sandoval.

So yeah, baseball's pretty uneventful so far except for one thing: on June 29th in the year of our Lord 2011, the Pittsburgh Pirates are not only in third place in the NL Central, but also possess a winning record AND are within striking distance of first. The Pirates haven't done nearly enough to annoy me in the past, so here's hoping they win the Central.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Man-dies-after-falling-out-of-stands-at-Rangers-?urn=mlb-wp11900

I heard a quick blurb on the radio on my way to work that there was a tragedy last night in Texasand my first thought was (hopefully) something happened to the Cowboys but this just sucks.

quote:

This kind of thing isn't supposed to happen at the ballpark.
But it has.
A man attending a Texas Rangers game with his young son died after falling out of the left-field stands and about 20 feet to the ground Thursday night.
He was trying to catch a ball flipped into the stands by Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton(notes) but apparently lost his balance and fell head-first in a space between the 14-foot outfield fence and the grandstand near the Oakland Athletics bullpen.
"We had a very tragic accident tonight and one of our fans lost their life reaching over the rail trying to get a ball," team president Nolan Ryan said. "As an organization, and as our team members and our staff, we're very heavy-hearted about this, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family."
The Brownwood (Texas) Bulletin identified the man as Shannon Stone, a lieutenant in that town's fire department and a fireman for 18 years.
The accident happened in the second inning after Oakland's Conor Jackson(notes) hit a foul ball that bounced back onto the field.
Horrifying TV replays from the Oakland broadcast show Stone positioning himself to catch Hamilton's throw, then tumbling over a railing as his young son watched. A man next to Stone tried to hold onto him, but couldn't.
It's the second fatal fall at a major league ballpark this season. In May, a fan at Coors Field fell down a stairwell and died. Also, last July at Rangers Ballpark, a fan fell 30 feet from the second deck of seats while trying to catch a foul ball and suffered a fractured skull and sprained ankle.
Ryan said Hamilton and the rest of the club were made aware of what happened.
"We spoke to the ballclub, they understood what has happened and we spoke to Josh," Ryan said. "I think as any of us would be, Josh is very distraught over this, as the entire team is."
What must be going through the mind of not only the boy, but also Hamilton? Obviously, what happened wasn't his fault but it would only be human nature to feel guilty. And, as most fans realize, Hamilton is quite human.
The other players were taking it hard as well:
Athletics reliever Brad Ziegler(notes) was in tears after the game when he found out the man had died.
"They had him on a stretcher. He said, 'Please check on my son. My son was up there by himself.' The people who carried him out reassured him. 'Sir, we'll get your son, we'll make sure he's OK,"' Ziegler said. "He had his arms swinging. He talked and was conscious. We assumed he was okay. But when you find out he's not, it's just tough."
This has to be the saddest possible event at a baseball game. A man goes to a ballgame with his son it's the ultimate American experience and he dies trying to catch a ball. It's hard to comprehend.
As for the need to raise the railings, or not throw balls into the stands ... that's the crazy part. How many thousands of games happen where nobody gets hurt, and now this?
Video of the fall probably can be found elsewhere on the Internet, but be advised: It is profoundly upsetting.
Maybe more cogent thoughts will come to me in the morning.

I think we could even skip the formalities and waiting period, and just send Derek Jeter to the Hall of Fame right now. 5 for 5, a homer for hit 3000, and drove in the winning run. Jeter just has that magical thing where, no matter how much he has left in the tank, he has it at the right moments to build his legacy.

Also, fuck the Yankees. But it's hard to be a Jeter hater when he has days like that.

Yeah, Jeter might as well just go in now. Hell, off the top of my head, he's the only "sure fire" Hall of Famer currently active that hasn't been linked to steroids, from all accounts he's a good guy, and he's pretty much synonymous with the most well-known franchise in baseball. I'd like for him to retire at the end of this season and leave baseball behind until they induct him for the simple reason that they can avoid any potential scandals between now and his induction.

Sidenote: why is A-Rod still talked about as a clear bet for the Hall of Fame? He did steroids. He lied about it. And when he couldn't deny it anymore, he threw a family member (granted, a cousin, but still) under the bus to try and save face. And that's besides the whole thing where he said he gave opposing batters a head's up as to what pitches they were going to throw in blow-outs.
