Download 2011: Headlined by System of A Down
Its that time of year again!! In just 40 day's, I'll be off to donnington for five days of camping, and 3 days of ROCK!! I'm stoked
beyond belief.
Full Line-up if anyone cares is here.
Here's who I'm hoping to catch:
Friday: Puddle Of Mud, Danzig, Black Stone Cherry, Think Lizzy, Alter Bridge, Korn, Pendulum. Fuck Def Leppard, they were here two years ago and
weren't that good.
Saturday: Pretty much everybody. Funeral for a Friend, Skunk Anansie (dont think they're that big in the US but theyre awesome), Mr Big, Twisted
Sister, Alice Cooper and the reformation of System of a mother-fuckin down!!!
Sunday: Wayne Static, Bowling for Soup, GWAR, Buckcherry, Disturbed, BFMV, Rob Zombie.
It will be awesome. Oh yes, It will be awesome!!!

And so begins my annual hatred of Gob for being able to attend Download.
A couple of questions -
Are The Darkness back together?!? Why was I not informed?!
It's a bit of a mindfuck seeing Puddle of Mudd playing the main stage while Korn, Children of Bodom, and Danzig are all playing the lesser
stages. Are Puddle of Mudd still bigger in Europe than they are in The States?

The most important things to remember about festivals like download are that all three stages pretty much run against each other; and that once a band
agree to play, its a joint decision between them and the one guy who organises the festival as to where they play on the bill. Just because theyre
playing Main Stage doesnt make them more important than the second stage. Korn are second to last on the second stage, making them a pretty big
deal. Itd be like running a WWE and TNA PPV at the same time all things being equal, would you rather curtain jerk the WWE show or be 2nd to last
on the TNA show? Yes the second stage is a bit smaller, but some bands prefer that.

To this end, the only negative this year is that I cant see ALL of Alice Cooper and SOAD, as theyre the main two Saturday headliners, and they
overlap by 15 minutes or so. Ill miss the end of Cooper, as Ive seen him before. The other half wants to watch all of Cooper regardless. Generally
speaking the third stage finishes first, then second, then main stage. For the massive acts theres hardly any clash and when AC/DC played last
year, their two negotiating points were that nobody else played at the same time as them, and that they brought their own stage. Divas.

Puddle of Mud and CKY arent THAT popular, and havent done much for years, but have a bit of mainstream, appeal. So they are on the main stage, but
will be playing at like 2-3 pm when the crowds are still coming in. These kind of bands also fit these festivals in with their European tours, so
theyll be in England for one day, and Germany etc the next. Same with guys like Wayne Static Static X are popular enough, but hes on his own this
time, so hes opening the Sunday show doing new solo stuff. Corey Taylor did it last year.

Danzig: apparently this was a big get for download as UK appearances are uber-rare, but this was apparently one of the easiest negotiations: all he
wanted to do was to be able to do his show in the dark. Now in June over here, its still light at 8pm, so he has to headline somewhere just so its
late enough. Hes not popular enough to headline the main two stages, but was happy on the third. I guess hell play at about 9pm. Im still torn on
whether to catch him or Korn (theyll likely clash). The stages are close enough that I could catch a little bit of both...

Korn: Specifically requested their spot, apparently. They played the main stage a year or two ago, and havent released anything lately, and
definitely arent headliners at the moment. Pendulum are insanely good live, very buzzing.

SOAD: the massive get, a UK exclusive for 2011 (these things do occasionally carry this sort of stuff for the headliners Metallica/Slipknot are
doing the same with Sonisphere in July). Organisers generally dont share headliners either, as it allows for too much comparison. Sonisphere have the
Big Four of Metal on their Friday, Biffy Clyro on Saturday, and Slipknot on the Sunday. Reading has become a bit more indie music since 2008 (as
these two snap up all the big decent rock artists), but Muse are playing there this year...

Rob Zombie: Another good one but not quite headliner. Ill catch him over Linkin Park though.

Def Leppard: they usually have one classic rock headliner a year. They played in 2009 and were ok, last year it was Aerosmith, this year Leppard
came back because they love it, and the organiser asked them back because they were cheap (rumour is that SOAD are costing a fortune). Some people are
complaining that they played 2 years ago, I say screw them: I like some of their stuff, and realise that a lot of people LOVE most of their stuff
whilst not liking the techno-style of Pendulum. Its not like theyre the only band playing. Ill be catching Pendulum, then going to the tent for
many many beers, and playing in the fun fair. Cant beat a good game of dodgems when youre smashed!

After the bands finish at 11.15-11.30 theres a village of entertainment, last year we had midget wrestling, stand up comedy and theres always a
massive fairground. Theres an autograph tent that some bands sign stuff in during the day. Theres also a couple of club style tents playing music.
Many people literally dont sleep the whole weekend Im getting too old for that now...

And no, as fair as I know, the Darkness arent back together full time but theyve reformed for this gig, and will assess everything else
afterwards. If it goes well I guess theyll get back together.

Im still waiting / Hoping for a full on Guns n Roses reunion at one of these things. Slash + Miles Kennedy (Alter Bridge lead singer, back this year
with his own band) were awesome last year. GNR did a UK tour and were not so great. Still, Ive rocked out to Slash playing Sweet Child of Mine in a
field with 90,000 others in the blistering sun... it was a great day!

Great post, Gob! Thanks for the info on The Darkness. I really thought they were done for good. And I still hate you.
Also, post-Download, this thread will be useless without pics!

I'll post pics- I'll find some from last year/ 2009 too. Last years headliners were ACDC, Rage against the machine, and aerosmith. I
don't think they'll ever top that trio.

Thin Lizzy Friday.
Mr. Big and Alice Cooper Saturday.
Disturbed (and GWAR!!!) Sunday.
Good thing I don't live over there, or I'd be broke.

God, I loved The Darkness' first album, and man did their follow-up suck monkey balls. Hopefully they're off the booger-sugar for good
and can get back to making good music.
Some other things I noticed about that lineup:
Clutch is one fucking awesome live band. To me they always sounded like a heavier Skynyrd mixed with some Pantera (who I think they toured
with back in the day). Highly, HIGHLY recommended.
Gaslight Anthem? Not a metal band, but from people in the know they are well worth seeing.
I hope that GWAR eats Plain White T's alive and makes them eat their own vomit.
Also, remember when Sevendust were supposed to be the next big metal band? And now they're playing the tiny stage at this festival?

I weep for this. Having seen them open up for Black Label Society a year or two ago, they blew me away with their live performance. They did a
Master Of Puppets/Walk/We Die Young medley that was fucking top notch. I was amazed. And I've never been a huge fan of their whole catalog but
they've got some songs I really love (Angel's Son, Denial, Ugly, etc.) I wish they'd get the credit I feel they deserve.
Case in point - A package tour came through Charlotte last summer (I think it was the Carnival of Madness?) with Shinedown, some band I don't
remember, Puddle of Mudd, and Sevendust. And Sevendust was at the BOTTOM of the bill. Horrible.

Don't worry, I am looking forward to, and will definitely be seeing the Cult. My must see acts on Subday are Wayne Static (love static x, and I
had a blast at a live show a few years ago); Gaslight Anthem, Dusturbed, The Cult, Rob Zombie.
Who said they'd be broke? You pay ONE FEE for five days of camping - the campsite opens Wednesday for people to start camping, the entertainment
village opens pretty much straight away. We're going down Thursday lunchtime, will have a beer or ten, a BBQ, crash out ready for Friday.
Obviously you need food and beer money, but how much you spend can really vary- we buy our own beer from supermarkets and smuggle it into the arena,
and eat cereals/BBQ stuff at the tent. Me and the girlfriend generally spend 30-40 on beer and food before leaving, and another 100 when we're
there (10-15 a day food, 20 beer on top of what we bought- beer from
the vendors there etc).
So, without looking, how much would you lot pay to attend this shindig?

That was me...
I was under the impression (because that's how one of the festivals I was looking at going to - Maryland Deathfest, maybe?) was basically pay
for each day, or get a "discounted" - 80%, or thereabouts - price for the entire weekend.

Correct- each day ticket (if you only wanted to come to say, Saturday) is 86 / $120 I guess. A day ticket only lets you into the arena. A 5 day
ticket, where you camp, get a wristband and can just roam as you please- 190/ $270. I think you can get weekend 'arena only' tickets too,
so yo could go home every night if you don't like camping for 140/ $200.
All things considered, I think it's a really good deal.

Yeah - that is a good deal. Holy shit, now I wish I were over there. I wouldn't be broke - I'd just exhaust my
entertainment fund for the rest of the year.
eta: 140 for three days vs. 258 (86/day x 3) is nearly half-off.

Yeah the day tickets are really for people who LOVE bands like SOAD but hate linkin park etc; or who can't make all three for other reasons. We
don't do much between Xmas and May to afford this. You should all come over next year!

Heh - I just noticed the two tiny stages listed at the end. And then noticed that Bowling For Soup ends up playing on both Saturday (Jager stage) and
then Sunday (Main stage). Also, Dan Reed plays on both the Jager stage and the 2nd stage - both on Saturday.

Sorry to double post, but I figure you'd be interested to know the Darkness at download is no longer a one off: They're doing three warm
up shows the week before in the UK. Ironically though, you have to ALREADY have a download ticket in order to buy tickets for these gigs. But four
gigs in a week or two together is obviously a very good sign.

I never like concerts like these... there's so many bands I really don't like, mixed with a couple I like a lot, mixed with a couple I
know nothing about, but are pretty good.
I'd prefer to simply see extra long sets by Clutch, then System for a night, then burn alive in the sun and drink $8 beers for an entire day.
That said, I'm searching for some of these bands on youtube right now and am intrigued by Boss Hoss, who appear to be a German cover band that
can play wide range of stuff. Also, Japanese Voyeurs who seem to be Nirvana with a chick.
Oh Japan....

That's cool, and the reason why bands still tour alone also. The thing about the huge number of bands is that when they're announced, you
quickly look them
Up and if you like, you listen more. I'd never heard of the gaslight anthem
Until they were announced for this, but they're pretty good and I'm lookIng forward to seeing them. The lower down bands only get short
sets, with the headliners
Playing around two hours, second get an hour and a bit, third get an
Hour...
The great weather makes a good festival awesome. And the idiots pay 4 a pint; half the people there (myself included) take our own. Just come back
from Belgium with a crate of leffe, a crate of a Belgian beer called Jupiler, and a case of old speckled hen
Just a few days to go now!! Woo woo woo!!

One thing I just noticed that struck me as funny is that Buckcherry is billed below Rob Zombie, The Cult, and Black Veil Brides.
I guess the novelty of "Crazy Bitch" has officially worn off. Or maybe it was never as big of a hit across the pond as it was in the States?

Will post pictures tomorrow! Awesome weather Friday and Saturday; cold, windy and wet yesterday - to the point where we watched Rob Zombie then left,
rather than the original plan of watching the end of linkin park.
