WWE '12

Is this the Rock or the Miz wearing Rock's body?

Every year I promise myself I'm done buying brand new WWE games. Every year I find myself buying it on release day, enjoying it for a few weeks, and not touching it again until I trade it in. I know THQ still goes through the motions because they have a job to do, but much like Madden, I wish they'd just settle on a definitive engine and then release annual (or in WWE's case, maybe quarterly) roster updates at a fraction of the cost.

I'm sure I'll swallow the $60 and buy this again, and I'm sure I'll be done with it again in a month. Looks really nice, though

Yup.

Except I successfully gave up on madden, and I never actually trade in my Smackdown vs Raws cause I like looking at my CAWs every once in a while. Last year I made a bunch of marvel characters, the year before about 20 Gi Joe characters. I don't want to buy it, but I know I'm going to get sucked in by some promised change that ends up sucking and the new roster

I think we are all in the same boat on this one. However, I did manage to skip out on All Stars, and I only just now picked up Legends of Wrestlemania used. I posted it earlier, but in many ways I actually liked the 2010 character models better than the 2011 effort. Particularly Edge looked better in 2010...and it seems the Mickey James model got uglier in each new release. I guess I won't have to worry about that in '12. WWE games would be perfect for downloadable content that would update the rosters/gimmicks for existing guys and on occasion release a new model as new people debut. I guess too many of us are buying the yearly release to make THQ want to do this. I'm sure everyone will also realize that when the next big systems do come out for Microsoft and Sony that the whole cycle of new release with slight yearly improvements will begin all over again for WWE, Madden, and all the sports games...and we will still be foolish enough to buy it.

I'm happy that it would appear that they are finally giving us a new Rock model for the first time in years, as 2011's is straight out of the 90's series of game I do believe (long sideburns), which is odd considering that they've done newer Rock scans...

I liked that they had several guys with alternative street clothes in this years game. I'd like to see them continue that for all the guys, or maybe take the superstar "Thredz" a step further and just let you have complete control over what the guys where. If they are that worried about someone putting Cena in a thong and sticking it up on youtube they could just block that clothing combination.

I know you can do it in the create a story mode, but I'd like to see the creat a PPV mode brought back where you can decide to put the belt on the line as opposed to having to let the computer determine the belt in the current "Universe" mode in 2011.

I'm still pretty pissed about the DLC offerings from this year. They announced a spots for additional character downloads and then short changed us. I get maybe Daniel Bryan not being in the game due to roster cut offs, but ADR not being available later is just lame. Even if they were going to short change us on new character DLC's they could have compensated with more rings, set themes, or alternate attires.

I think I get more enjoyment out of filling a notebook with my little story ideas and roster moves than I do the game itself. I too swear that each year I won't buy the thing, but then there I am pre-ordering it at the same time I pick up my new EA NHL game...

If the WWE is trying to make this more of an annual sports franchise along the lines of the EA games, then they need to look at doing more free roster updates, or at least only for a small fee.

I usually end up buying it, and sometimes trade it in. Usually the thing that keeps me buying it (as opposed to just renting it long enough to play the new story modes) is the new additions to the roster.

I ended up keeping SDvR08 because it featured for the first time all the ECW guys (Sandman, Dreamer, Sabu, CM Punk, Terry Funk, Monty Brown/Marcus Cor Von...fuck you I'm a fan of the guy), and 10 because it was the only one to feature Brian Kendrick (as The Brian Kendrick) and the last one to feature Dreamer (though I'm convinced he was supposed to be in 11, since his name is on the lineup sheet during one of the story modes, but maybe got yanked when he showed up in TNA). I ended up trading in 11, because the only new roster I guy I really really wanted was Zack Ryder, and I'm fairly confident he'll still be in 12. '10 also just felt like it played better than '11.

I'll pick up 12 because supposedly they're legitimately advancing the gameplay. Also I want to be able to play as Daniel Bryan, and supposedly Mick Foley and Brock Lesnar are set to be in the game too, which will be cool (Mick's first appearance since, I think, 07, and Brock's first since before they went to the Smackdown vs Raw name)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to it. Also, note re: Daniel Bryan, he was supposed to be part of the Nexus DLC (along with Barrett and Otunga), but then he got fired and they replaced him with Gabriel.

And my first CAW when '12 comes out? The Big O.

They did the roster reveal today. The animations look noticeably better. The roster looks deep and features a lot of guys that haven't been in a game in a long while. I think the Nexus guys will be outdated...Husky Harris?...and some of the intros seem to be rehashed on guys like Mark Henry and Big Show. However, it did look like they have the new entrances for Punk and R-Truth. As previously posted, I'm sure I would get suckered into buying it either way, but it looks like it might be a worthy purchase this year.

Yoshi Tatsu
Kane
Big Show
Kofi Kingston
Jack Swagger
Cody Rhodes
Dolph Ziggler
Chavo Guerrero
Drew McIntyre

LEGENDS/RETIRED GUYS/NON-ACTIVE WRESTLERS
---------------------------------------------------------------
Arn Anderson

Booker T
Vader
Ax
Smash
Eddie Guerrero
Vince McMahon
Steve Austin
Edge
Jerry Lawler

DIVAS
--------
Eve Torres
Natalya
Maryse
Layla
Michelle McCool
Beth Phoenix
Kelly Kelly

Also a few supposedly still to be named.

Thoughts:

-Pretty complete roster of current guys. No major omissions, even by the "they've debuted too recently to be included" standard. Interesting to see Tyson Kidd included but not DH Smith...wonder if they knew from the moment they split them that they wouldn't do anything with Smith. And kinda surprised that Husky Harris made the cut, considering he was written out like six months ago or something, but I guess they want to have Nexus all together for one of the story modes or something.

-Legends lineup looks awesome. Nash and Booker seemed like givens to be included. Happy to see Arn and Eddie included, and psyched for Vader, and the inclusion of both the Road Warriors AND Demolition. Though I noticed that the previously-rumored Mick Foley and Brock Lesnar aren't there...perhaps they're the "still to come" names, and they're holding off on them to get buzz going closer to the game release. Also hoping that we might get Randy Savage, as I'd like to be able to use him in a more realistic game than All-Stars.

-Not to sound sexist, but why even put Divas in the games anymore? Does anyone ever use them? What purpose do they serve? If they have involvement in story mode, why couldn't they just make them non-playable characters (like Teddy Long and Todd Grisham), and save that roster space for more mid-carders (Curt Hawkins? Brodus Clay? Perhaps some other notable NXT names?) or additional legends that people might actually want to play as?

Discuss.

Little bummed about the lack of Brodus Clay and the Usos, but really, they did a pretty good job of including damn near everybody. And I for one am stoked to have Husky onboard.

VADER AND DEMOLITION?!?!?! Get your hands off my wallet, you damned dirty THQ. On the other hand, WTF are we wasting a Legends slot on Vince? Would it have killed Vince to sit this one out to give that spot to a Jake Roberts or a Randy Savage?

Brock will be in as one of the secret unnamed characters. I'm willing to bet on it.

Ehhhh, the divas are really only taking up seven roster slots. That's pretty hard to get too worked up over.

ETA- Just checked THQ's website, and they've got "Cult of Personality" for Punk! Fuck yeah!

I get what you're saying re: Divas, but think: would you rather have those seven, or guys like:

-Brodus Clay
-Curt Hawkins
-Jimmy Uso
-Jey Uso
-Primo
-Great Khali
-Trent Barreta
-Tyler Reks
-Additional Legends

Even if my play as a Khali or a Reks would be rare or never, I'd take them to at least add some more variety to the main game, rather than a bunch of Divas that I'll never use.

And maybe I am over-reacting, but this is a thing that's bugged me over the years when I could almost never get a Stevie Richards, or a Nunzio, or a Maven, etc. included, all because we needed to have the Bella Twins, or Joy Giovanni, or some other useless diva that no one gives a shit about for video game purposes.

For that matter, I'd also like to see the inclusion of some non-main event guys from the attitude era or before once in a while. The inclusions of Rocks and Austins and so forth are common, but I'd like to see an occasional Val Venis, Gangrel, or my personal favorite D'Lo Brown (though I get that probably couldn't happen anyway as long as he works for TNA).

Continuing on my tangent, how awesome would it be if THQ could remake a game like WWF Attitude or No Mercy with the current technology and game engine?

I haven't bought a wrestling game since No Mercy and pray every year that someone will do an updated version of it. That game was pretty much wrestling game perfection.

I'd like it if for some of the legends they included some modern or alternate "skins" for them... ie;

- Austin in jeans and t-shirt
- Older (like age wise) versions of Lawler, Steamboat, Nash... ect
- Alternate versions of the Rock and Edge (which they had in this years)... like street gear.

Its a good roster so far, but I'd like to see a couple of other things in this;

- An expansion on the threadz thing where you can actually change entire outfits for characters instead of just the colours... ie Cena in tights instead of jorts.

- Bring back random names in the CAW's instead of just a list of generic ones like "the superstar" and "the machine".

- Ongoing devotion of roster downloads and DLC instead of just 1-2 packs. They could even just do different arena's, rings, attires, although getting the guys they debut later, or expanded legends (like say Jericho) would be ideal

Ummm...shit. I think this one actually just earned preorder status with me from that roster rather than "wait until Best Buy has a Buy 2, Get 1 Free sale" status. Even though a few more random guys like Brodus Clay would have been nice (and yeah, right there with ya: Divas are a bit worthless in these games, especially now that THQ has made it so that there's no more intergender matches, which I found hilarious), this is the type of roster I've been waiting to see since Here Comes the Pain.

Editted to add: of course, since this is THQ and WWE we're talking about, I can't wait for them to ruin this when they put more emphasis on analog-based controls.

As far as the legends go, why have none of these games included an old-school mid-90's HBK? We get guys like Austin and Rock every year, but no classic HBK, Owen, Perfect etc.

Pumped for Vader, though, especially if they do a good job animating his moves.

In the third DLC pack of this years SD vs Raw there was a new skin for HBK that I do believe was from around 94 or there abouts.

That's why I'd like to see any legends introduced in the game, and who has been active on TV in the last year or so, get two different outfits, a kind of prime version and their current attire/look...

Not that I'm clamouring to have Lawler matches, but they'd be more useful and accurate if he was his 60 year old self intead of his younger version.

I Think We MAY Have a Record...

Between Mark Henry, William Regal, Husky Harris, Vader, and Demolition (well, at least Ax), I think we've tied or broken the record for most pudgy/fat guys in a WWE game. And yes, I feel bad lumping Regal in there, but the man isn't solid muscle by any means.

Mostly Orton, but some of the other wrestlers give input on their ratings.

That had to be really embarassing for The Miz to be rated lower than some of the female wrestlers, but somewhat fulfilling looking back now with a WWE championship on his resume.

You know who I wouldn't mind seeing them put in the game as a legend; Goldberg.

He's probably the biggest WCW name out there, obviously did time in the WWE as well, so he'd be a pretty justifiable legend for inclusion. On the plus side he's still young enough that for all the little fantasy booking you get to do in the game you (I anyway) could still see him facing off against Cena, Orton, or Taker.

I like Eddie but I just can't get into using him given him being dead, and I found the same thing with this years crop of legends as they put all of the legends in their prime... I used RVD a lot, but Hart and Dragon were both set in their 1980's or 90's looks so it felt odd to me to use them in any of the stories I developed.

Looks like they are already doing what they did last year and advertising DLC as part of the starting rosters as Lawler (of all people) has now been made a DLC character.

I'm good with them offering up something 6 months from now for a fee, but when they advertise something as being part of the game and then make it DLC it sucks. I'll have my new NHL 12 to keep me busy still so I may hold off on buying this one until the bigger price drop or christmas sales start up as if its the same as last year we should be able to just buy access and get all of the dlc instead of rushing out to buy it to get some exclusive that's not really exclusive.

Apparently, according to the twitter feed for this game, there's one last guy left that'll be on disc. Your Goldberg pitch may not be that far off, though really only Brodus Clay is out there as a recognizable enough name to make any sort of "deal" out of.

Editted to add: Apparently, they have 14 people left to reveal, of which some are Diva's and one is on the disc. My guesses:
1) Brodus makes the roster as DLC
2) We probably wind up with Trish, AJ, Kaitlyn, the Bellas, and Alicia Fox as a Diva DLC package
3) Legends probably come out as the last seven, guessing that possibly DDP and Goldberg get in, I'd be shocked if DiBiase Senior, Dusty Rhodes, and/or Mr. Perfect weren't in it, Bill DeMott is probably due for a video game, and, hell, THQ owns the UFC video game licensing, too, so Brock maybe winds up being the disc guy?
