Poll: Best football movie?

So right now I'm watching The Replacements with some friends and in spite of Keanu Reeves being in it, I think it might be my favorite football movie ever, but some of these assholes are trying to argue with me. So I turn to OO. I have no idea why. I might be drunk.

Feel free to back up your opinions with reasons. Or don't! I don't care.

Paper Lion is one of the best books/movies about football to me. It's funny as hell, doesn't buy into cliches (last second wins and all that) and has some really good insight into the players.

The Longest Yard (original) for serious football- (and prison-) movie fans.

The Longest Yard (remake) or The Waterboy for Adam Sandler movie fans (and shame on any of you for that alone). Though it's nowhere as shameful as anyone who picked The Last Boy Scout, which was such utterly wretched shit that it actually made Any Given Sunday look like Oscar-winning material in comparison.

Plus a shout-out to North Dallas Forty. Great performance by Nick Nolte in that one.

Let me first explain how the nominees are wrong

Rudy Notre Dame. Sucks
Friday Night Lights Didnt see it but whenever I see Billy Bob Thornton, I get the image of him fucking Halle Berry, which makes me jealous, so no
Replacements Cute movie, watch it when I catch it on TNT (almost every weekend) but best football movie, no
Any Given Sunday Oliver Stone can not make a movie without controversy, or intelligence, no
Remember the Titans Another good movie, plus has the cheerleader from Heroes, but in the final scene I still expect her to be playing her older self so no
Necessary Roughness I love Kathy Ireland, but minus points for no nudity from her and the fact that she cant act
Invincible I like this movie, but it is about the Eagles, as a Giant fan it loses right there, plus its Disney
Varsity Blues Dawson a football player??? Plus points for Ali Larter for the whip cream bikini, minus points for not showing it being licked off

My vote is the sappy original Brians Song.

The movie "Idiocracy" was really a documentary.

I double checked to make sure you didn't specify PRO football.

I pick "The Longshots" starring Ice Cube. NOT a comedy, despite how it may come off in the ads or previews. Very gritty, lightly based on a true story, and just real as fuck.

Rudy: One of the 20 worst movies ever made, I'm not talking just sports movies, I mean movies in general. So clearly not getting my vote.

FNL: Inexplicably and in-fucking-defensibly changes details from the book. No

The Replacements: Another horrible, HORRIBLE movie that shouldn't be within 500 yards of a list of best football movies ever.

Any Given Sunday: Little too unrealistic for me, still think it's a great flick though.

Remember the Titans: Another one that changes details from real life, that brings it down a bit for me.

Necessary Roughness: Funny flick, but best football movie of all time??

Invincible: See Remember the Titans

Varsity Blues: Almost..... but the ending brings it down. We're supposed to believe Kilmer didn't have any assistants?

My vote goes to the only movie that ever made me cry: The original Brian's Song, with an honorable mention going to The Program

Wow...looking over the nominees made me realize that there really have not been many very good football movies made.

Rudy, FNL, Replacements, Any Given Sunday, Titans, and Invincible all fall in the realm of "decent" to "pretty solid," but none that I'd call "very good" or "great." I might watch them for a bit if I catch them on TV when there's nothing else on, but I can't see myself ever watching any of them all the way through again.

Agreed that the original Longest Yard is better than any of the listed nominees. The remake wasn't as bad as I expected it to be when I first heard of it, but it's still definitely not what I'd call "good."

And if you want a great movie that's about football without directly being about football (as in, no actual football scenes), check out "Big Fan" starring Patton Oswalt as an unhealthily-obsessed Giants fan. Despite starring Oswalt, this movie is NOT a comedy, but I thought it was great.

I thought We Are Marshall was kind of good, and was actually based mostly on a real life tragic incident, as opposed to the typical made-up sports movie shit.

Gridiron Gang #1! Ehhhh, c'mon it wasn't that bad. Plus it had The Rock in it too.

Little Giants? Ed O'Neill in a movie about kid's league football? How could you ever go wrong with that?

Titans over Blues.

Side Note: I like Varsity Blues, but only on TV. You miss the brief nudity, but the locker room speech isn't just "Fuck That" and actually has some impact.

You're forgetting such greats as The Game Plan, and Radio, and for that a matter all the CFL inspired movies

My vote went to Kathy Ireland and the captain of the Enterprise. I just can't get into the Disney cue the heartstrings type movies as I find them a bit false in the emotion department.

Question; Why is Any Given Sunday considered to be so bad? I'm not saying it was great or even always good, but it seemed decent enough in terms of its desire to explore the corruption and money aspects of sports. Just curious why everyone hated it so much.

They're just pissed because of the locker room scene.

Really, I thought AGS was pretty boring. I don't think it was bad, really - I just felt like I had wasted two hours when I left the theater.

My immediate thought as an "other" since Chris is a fucking retard and didn't include this as an actual choice.

Kudos to OOMike and Thom (edit: and Sportsguy) for all mentioning it before I could.

Man, a lot of those movies I either haven't seen and/or they suck.

I voted for Varsity Blues almost by default.

Did he get all wacky and "jiggy with it", just like the same way Sayers lived his life? That's Smith's trademark with everything. He's like a black Scientologist wife-swapping actor version of John Cena. Except more over-rated.
