MLB 2015 Regular Season Thread (Brought to You by the Grays Sports Almanac)
Opening Night tonight. And, for the first time in 7 years, the Cubs are actually relevant. Granted, a lot of it has to do with Back to the Future 2,
people having way too large expectations for a team full of prospects to all play to the level they're projected to play at, and some bookmakers
giving the Cubs a 6:1 shot of winning it all (which we all know is false...it's 100:1, get with the movie).
Ultimately, this is a season that seems like half of it is going to involve people pointing at a 20 year old movie, and the other half will revolve
around every other team predicted to compete playing above expectations. But at the very least this should be an entertaining season, since most of
the teams in the majors have some shot at being competitive, so this should be the season we all appreciate two Wild Card spots.

Nearing the end of April, and the following three things are happening:
-The Cubs are 3 games over .500 (and over .500 for the first time since 2009)
-The Astros are leading the AL West
-The Mets are the best team in baseball
I can't imagine May ending on a similar note (maybe the Cubs only being 3 games over .500), but rain delays have made this a weird start.

I'm not going to guarantee too much success but I do believe what the Cubs are doing now is sustainable. Rizzo, Soler and Bryant still
haven't shown the power they are capable of and Soler will hit better when it gets warm. Addison Russell will hit better. Lester will pitch
better and is being BABIPed to death. Neil Ramirez coming back will help our bullpen tremendously as will finally sending down Schlitter.
So I don't think our early season success is an aberration at all.

And just imagine if, instead of the Palins, the Obama family had a pregnant, underage daughter on display at
their convention, flanked by her black boyfriend who "intends" to marry her. Who among conservatives would have resisted the temptation to speak of
"the dysfunction in the black community"?

It seems like this is about the point in time where you get a rough idea of what the playoff picture is going to wind up looking like. Usually, if
you have a winning record by now, you're probably still in it by the end of the year. Oakland and the Dodgers in 2013, Milwaukee and Arizona in
2011, and Atlanta in 2010 are the only teams in the last five years to come back from being under .500 at this point to get a playoff spot, and, of
those teams, only the Dodgers dug out of the bottom of a cellar to come back being 5 games under .500 and at the bottom of the NL West. So the
standings today, barring a significant injury or a huge surge by a team .500 or under (of which there are more of than winning teams) are probably
going to be similar to what we see in September. As it stands:
AL East:
New York and Tampa Bay
AL Central:
KC and Detroit
AL West:
Houston
NL East:
The Friggin' Mets and Washington
NL Central:
St. Louis and the Mother Friggin' Cubs
NL West:
The Dodgers
Right now, those are the ten teams that are leading their division and/or over .500. You also have Minnesota and the Angels lurking in the American
League (and the fact the AL East is just one of those divisions you expect to see a team collapse after one injury) and San Diego, Cincinatti, and San
Francisco lingering at or, in San Diego's case, one game over .500 in the NL (though, let's be honest: San Francisco is taking this year
off so they can win next year as scheduled).
The baseball fan in me wants to see the Mets, Astros, and Cubs all make the playoffs this year after toiling for as long as they have, though I have
to imagine they can't all keep this up all year. Though, if two of them are going to collapse, I volunteer the Mets and Astros.

First of all: I was supposed to be at the Home Run Derby. My Hollywood Brother had the hook-up for all of us to attend in somebody-or-another's
luxury box. Then, my mom went and stuck her hand in a lawnmower; we didn't attend.
So thanks for rubbing it in, man.
But joking aside: regardless of who hit the most home runs, it is undeniable that the biggest winner from Monday was the new Home Run Derby Format,
itself. We weren't there, but we were jumping around my mom's family room like monkeys as that thing played out. It helps that the most
lovable lug in all of baseball won, on his home field, and using two utterly implausible come from behind performances to do so... but honestly, that
format is gonna serve MLB well for years to come.
Todd Frazier is the most unhateable guy in baseball, and I'm just sorry that he came of age at, well, the wrong age. He's gonna hit free
agency for the first time after his age-31 season, and the Reds can't keep him... but somebody is gonna give him his stupid 7-year contract and
I'm gonna cheer for whichever team that is. Thus is the power of the ToddFather....

So question for people whose teams normally do these things...how odd is it that the Yankess/Jays are playing a double header tomorrow? I don't
really recall two teams battling for the division playing a double header this close to the end of the year.

Part of it seems like the plan: to keep September baseball interesting. If they can't find a mutual off-day to schedule a make-up game, then
throw in one of the later series. And if both teams happen to be in contention, then bonus.
On the playoffs, the NL is pretty much well and settled, barring any major collapses (which, judging from both the teams involved and/or their
September play, is realistic but unlikely for all five teams in the race), the NL will shape up as the Mets, Dodgers, Cardinals, Pirates, and Cubs,
with the Nats and Giants both possessing some semblance of life but, again, barring major collapses from the Mets or Dodgers, they're out. And
the Cardinals are the first team to officially make into the playoffs in either league, though their status as NL Central champ or Wild Card contender
is up in the air with how their pitching is imploding and their offense seems to be sputtering.
Meanwhile, as good as the NL is, the AL just officially kicked the first team out of complete playoff contention in the Oakland Athletics, who, at
64-85, took this long to lose any mathematical possibility of October baseball. As it stands now, the Royals, who are the fourth best team in
baseball, will likely clinch their division this week. The Yankees and Blue Jays are still going in the AL East and will likely eliminate the Red
Sox, Orioles, and Rays this week, but all three of those teams have the same shot at winning the Wild Card as the Nats and Giants have at their
divisions, which is a bit insane. Likewise, other than Oakland, everyone is still alive in the AL West, with the Astros currently holding the second
Wild Card. though, again, the second and third worst teams in the AL, the Tigers and White Sox, have that same shot at the Wild Card that the AL East
does.
I'd say you could pencil in the Royals vs the winner of the AL East as your ALCS, but the fact is that neither of those teams has done
particularly well against anyone else to make that guarantee. We could just as likely see the AL West champ Angels vs. the AL Wild Card Indians in
the ALCS as anything else.
Also, congrats to the Cubs and Mets for not only making it this far, but also (for the most part), improving upon their weaknesses. The Mets actually
seems like they can score runs now and Cubs have a respectable pitching staff and an offense that doesn't flame out for a week after one high
scoring game. So long as neither teams decides to partially dismantle what works (which the Cubs have done in the past), both teams should be good
for a while now.

St Louis vs. Chicago/Pittsburgh
LA vs. New York
Somehow the Mets, Astros, AND Cubs all managed to go from losing seasons to the post season, so congrats to all three. In the case of the Cubs, they
also managed to compile the third best record in baseball. Seeing as how the best three teams in baseball are all in one division, the cynic in me
fully expects either LA or New York to win the NL this year, and then promptly lose to the AL Wild Card winner.
However, since I can look at the stats and see that one of those three top winning record teams is actually on a roll right now, here's my
picks:
NL:
Chicago over Pittsburgh
LA over the Mets in four
Chicago over St. Louis in five
(and really feel like I'm jinxing myself here but...)
Chicago over LA in six
AL:
New York over Houston

Scariest thing about the Jays? We got a guy back at the end of the year who was suppose to the ace of the staff....and he's pitched like an ace.
