WWE: Ministry of Truth

So I remembered hearing someone say that upon repeat viewings of Wrestlemania 32, one will notice that one of the licensed songs used when the show aired live had already been replaced with some generic bit of score.... I filed this away as a quirky fact but didn't give it much more thought.... I mean we already knew that the WWE likes to play fast and loose with their audience mic's for certain performers, and that Smackdown has on many occasions had whole chorus's of boo's replaced in favour of cheers.... There's also the longstanding blurring of WWF logo's....

But then I've been working my way through 2012's Raw, and I noticed something.... the infamously hilarious/terrible comment that Abraham "AW" Washington made during a Titus O'Neil and Kofi Kingston match "He's like Kobe Bryant in a Denver hotel room; UNSTOPPABLE" had been excised from the broadcast, and so too was Michael Cole's brief post commercial apology for said comment.

Now I know we aren't ever going to see the Chris Benoit tribute show, and parts of Over the Edge 99 are gone forever.... and for very good reasons; but I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed any other edits, or bits and pieces that have gone down the "memory hole" on the network or otherwise.

Like anyone watch Royal Rumble 2005 where Vince not only doesn't fall, but bench presses an elephant and cures cancer?

Rewatching Nitro on the Network and skipping to matches was always a pain because, even though they keep the matches, they won't even dignify anything involving Chris Benoit with a label. So pretty much everything in WCW on the mid-90's has this weird gap in the tracking bar that's usually 15-30 minutes wide and, when you see them, you know exactly who it features.

Of course I think they figured out on the new batch of Nitros that would just be too much work so they did away with the ability to skip to matches completely.

Whatever it is that they do, they better get on it for WM32 and cut that summbitch down to a plausible runtime.

I don't have the network so I can't confirm this one, but I read somewhere that this part of the Trish/Mickie Mania 22 match was cut out:

Feel free to check and post results.

On the Benoit front, if you watch Night of Champions 2007 (the PPV that he noshowed on account of being dead), during Johnny Nitro (who replaced him in the ECW title match)'s entrance there's a long silent gap in commentary where they removed Cole explaining that Benoit couldn't make it to the show and so Nitro was there to take his place.

Just to see this gif reposted as many times as possible, AND to suggest an alternate name, might I suggest (due to Trish's Canadian roots) "The Mooseknuckle Duster"?

Mickie spoke about this on Jim Ross's podcast recently. It was absolutely cut from the match upon replays and Vince McMahon was waiting for her in Gorilla to lambast her for doing that move and told her that she pretty much screwed up big time and that she coudln't feel lower after the conversation because she thought that, given the character and it being Wrestlemania, that the move made a lot of sense within the context of everything.

But if Stone Cold had done it, I bet it would've been "brilliant character development"?

I appreciate the word play in this thread, but allow me to be the killjoy who reminds you that you are all, essentially, celebrating sexual assault.

For the record, this is not some post-modern, ultra-PC, uber-douche stance of mine; I didn't not like how WWE played the Trish/Mickie feud back in 2006. I also don't think it's retroactively OK to pretend like girl-on-girl finger-rape is hot, but my main problem is that -- even back in the day -- the whole story got sideways after the first month or two. Mickie came in as Trish's harmless stalker, but once they did the reveal that she was a whack-job and dangerous, they forgot to actually book her as a heel.... they could have/should have booked her to get booed, and instead, Mickie's main character trait was that she had the hots for Trish.

Wrestling fans not being the most enlightened or progressive sorts just cheered for all Mickie's unwanted advances, because OMG TWO GIRLS TOGETHER IS ALWAYS HOT EVEN IF ONE ISN'T INTO IT~!

I dunno, it just annoyed me to no end, because WWE should have known their fans better than to have expected them to boo Mickie, given how they booked things, and anytime you get the Narrative Face being booed (and the Narrative Heel being cheered), it's just a poor effort, in my book.

That said, sal is right: I don't know how any man could totally and completely dislike Mickie back before she switched to wearing pants. Holy crapforcrap, that woman is a magical creature of mystical powers from the waist down....

I'm with Rick on this one.

That ending was odd, and I remember it dampening my liking of the match. It just seemed so odd and out of place. It was headed towards all-time-classic Mania Match Avenue, and then wham. I have only rewatched my recorded tape of that match once, which is a shame. I remember I had about 7-8 people in my room watching that match, and not one of them sat there and said "that was cool". Just a bunch of confusion and shock, for the most part.

It was such a good feud. I even remember the small things, like Trish's match against Melina at Survivor Series and how Mickie pulled Trish out of the way while she was on the Apron to avoid Melina's attack. I have only seen THAT match ONCE, but man, the way that feud played out was a slow-trickle patience the likes of which WWE NEVER shows anymore. The little things were done so well during the build-up to her eventual psychotic reveal.

I also believe that the feud became a lot less memorable once the obsessed lesbian part of it kicked in. It could have gotten really creepy and intense, but instead, WWE did what WWE always does (IE. went with the wrong idea) and cheapened it.

What was also revealed on Mickie's appearance on Jim Ross's podcast was that the over arching story line was written by Mickie herself and ultimately got her called up to play the role after she approached Vince and told hi that she wrote the story herself.

While they didn't use all of it, and parts were added, tweaked and changed throughout the process, I think it speaks to Cam's point about the little things being done well because the performers themselves, had a lot of input into the matches, story progressions and angle, as a whole.
