Logan

Welp, it looks like they finally got Wolverine right. Still too tall though.

Also, even though the trailers show a lot of goodness, fucking please don't be a bait-and-switch like 'Suicide Squad' was.

Also2, thank you Deadpool for what you have wrought.

Also3, while I like him in the role, Jon Bernthal would be so much better suited as the next Wolverine than he is as the current Punisher.

The trailer looks pretty fan-freaking-tastic. I hope they pull it off this time around. The Wolverine was almost really good, if not for the third act with the terrible robot Silver Samurai.

OK. These look much better than the other trailer(s?) I've seen for this. Anyone else expecting the dude's head to roll out of the backpack?

Just got around to watching "Suicide Squad" a couple of weeks ago. What bait-n-switch are you talking about? With Joker, or something else?

Basically how the extremely well cut (IMO) trailers not only didn't show stuff in the movie that were in them, but led everyone to believe the film we were getting would have Joker doing something interesting or important to the story. WB chopped it up and freaked out in the wake of Deadpool's success at being 'zany' (without understanding the whys) and were lucky enough to get people in the door with promises of, finally, a good DC movie, some NuJoker action, Harley Quinn, Croc, and Bats showing up. WBDC narrowly missed a Josh Trank-esque underbus throwening of their director David Ayer while producing a shitshow not that much unlike the former's not-really-horrible-but-maddeningly disorganized Fantastic Four reboot.

TL;DR - 'Suicide Squad' ate nice looking but no-so-clean ass. Pretty to look at, but left a bad taste in your mouth leaving the theater.

Also, I think they added this asshole to the film just to hedge their bets against possible X-Suckage...

That series pissed me off. The Batman vs Darth Vader was great but there's no way Wolverine would have beaten Wonder Woman in her full Amazonian rage, especially not when the lower half of his body was melted off by lava. Even that over-rated little prick has his limits. Fuckin' sk8rbois with their endless "Wolverine? wOO-hOO!" sk8rboi mentality.

You know, everyone says it's not supposed to make sense, like that's the whole point, dude. And I'm just saying, you know, that's like an excuse for lazy storytelling. Just don't sell me shite and tell me it's gold, all right? I might be stoned, but I'm not high. You know what I mean?

The movie definitely looks cool, but I'm just so tuned out from the X-Men franchise at this point that I don't know if/when I'll see it.

On a sidenote, does anyone else find it a little odd that Logan is rated R? And not odd in the sense that they're making an R-rated Wolverine movie, and I get why they're doing it, but just that normally it's the opposite with movie franchises: they start out R and then eventually go down to PG-13 (Diehard, Terminator, Robocop, Aliens/Predator, etc). So just from a consistency standpoint, it seems weird to me to have a movie franchise where you could show all of the movies to your kid, but then when you get to the last one, you have to say "sorry, you gotta wait five or six years before you can watch it because Professor X is dropping the F bomb and Logan is slashing people's throats."

I think I read something to the effect that Jackman took less money to guarantee it would be a rated R film so that they would have a bit more creative freedom with the character...

I think other markets tend to skew a bit lower with ratings for some stuff than the MPAA does (like in Ontario an actual R rating is pretty hard to come by, most R stuff in the states gets an 18a meaning under 18 and you need an adult with you... although oddly enough PG 13 is generally a 14a... )... maybe they are also thinking that even with an R rating the movie will probably make "X" number of dollars, and that if it's good enough it will make more on home video and that kind of stuff.

Just an excellent movie... like a modern western or something along those lines. Jackman knocks it out of the part, Stewart was excellent, and the kid with them makes Hit Girl in the Kick Ass movies look like a girl scout.

Phenomenal movie. Maybe even surpasses X2 and Deadpool as the best comic book movie from Fox. The performances were great all across the board from the three main leads to the throwaway villian lackeys.

If you're gonna go with an R rating, go big. Which they did. Very enjoyable.

Fucking superb. Although I left feeling rather upset because Wolverine was my first comic book I recall getting. He got me into comics and is just such a great character. Seeing him die felt wrong. And bit weird too.... I've seen him come back from being ripped in half. But I digress... still amazing work all around.

I think my favorite scene was when Professor had an episode in the hotel and Logan had to power through it to save him and the kid. I laughed at the first guy in the door that was frozen but was able to look at Logan for a moment before getting killed. "Yea, dude... you're totally fucked." Then I loved how Laura didn't miss a beat and instantly killed the lone survivor when everything went back to normal.

Also had no idea there was going to be a evil twin Weapon X. Fucking awesome.

Finally watched Logan. Wow. That was great. Laura was awesome, Prof X was great, and seeing Logan (and Xavier) die were both sad. The violence was fantastic - and I honestly can't see this movie having the emotional gravitas it did without the R-rated violence. Fan-fucking-tastic.

I finally watched X-Men Apocalypse two days later. Bleh bleh bleh. At least I went in to that thing with low expectations.

If you fellOOws would indulge me a more personal review, I thank you in advance. Otherwise, please lookit the pretty pictures and never no mind my sad ramblings.

Late to the show, but I just seen't Logan last night on the Amazon. I absolutely loved it. It was a modern day Western with fruit booty X-Men shit infused with 'Unforgiven' badassery to finally make that universe palatable to me. The main underlying themes I got out of it was the wages of violence and the exhausting toll of aging and emotional losses, which I think is why I find I have such a tepid reaction to most of the other X-Films (a.k.a. more recently The Jennifer Lawrence Experience feat. Charles Always Forgiving Magneto and Somesuch Other Gravitasless Mutants) that seem to rely on the "We just don't fit in and people don't like us" trope way too much. Yeah, I get that's what they're ultimately about but ringing that bell over and over in movie after movie gets tiresome for me. YMMV.

Lol, what? So, so, so

This film just had that theme running low-level in the background with the mutant kid revival science experiments, but otherwise that kind of angst wasn't present. I need to see it again to really get all the dialogue or any Easter eggs outside of the X-Comics they showed, but IIRC I don't think they even really mentioned any of the other main X-Folk by name (like Jean, Scott, Storm, et al.) or how they were killed. I don't even know what continuity this was supposed to take place in. I know DoFP essentially changed the outcome of X-3: The Last Stand where Jean and Scott died, but was this supposed to be a continuation of that timeline or...? Regardless, for wherever this story stands in the fucked up continuity, I thought it was bold for it to be Charles and Logan only from the old crew.

The Ultraviolence and proper swearing was on point in ways that make me ache for a big screen Punisher adaptation in the same vein to be made some day. And the UV involving fucking children (uh, wait what?) no less reminded me of 70's and 80's films where absolutely no one was safe, even kids. Especially the middle-to-late act when Logan and Co. met that family they helped corral their escape horses. And it goes without saying that other than Huge Jacked Man and Old Man Picard, the absolute star of the show was Daphne Keen as X-23. She gets all my fucking Gollys! for the ferociousness she pulled off. Her and Millie 'Eleven' Brown from 'Stranger Things' should form their own X-(Wo)Men and go fuck shit up together. Yes yes, one's in the 1980's and the other's in 2029. It's called time travel you fucking nerds, look it up.

I also enjoyed the villain aspects even though a lot of people seem to think Dr. Rice played by Richard Grant was underwritten. I disagree in that I thought his character was around the perfect amount time to move the plot along with the point of their chasing Laura and to give the slightest of connective tissue nods to the X-Trope I mentioned above about the "They hate us 'cause they anus" stuff. And he's an acclaimed English actor so that's, like, what the Limeys are born and bred to excel at anyway so you can't go wrong there. Also glad to see Boyd Holbrook from the excellent 'Narcos' Netflix series knock it out of the park with high-end henchman charisma. I anticipate the new Predator film he's the lead in a lot more now.

Probably the biggest reason I enjoyed it was parallels to my own life going on right now. Old Man Janerd's got a touch of the Parkinson's and I roll him around in a wheelchair from time-to-time. We don't argue like Logan and Charles but our low-level squabbling sometimes gets in the ballpark. Add to that my neck and right shoulder don't much work properly anymore from busting dick in construction jobs and the constant pain is yet another reminder of the joys of aging, this film was On Fucking Point underscoring the frailty that comes to us all, even to the strong and powerful.

Much like their failed attempt to boat it out to the middle of the ocean and live out the rest of their days in peace, I'm desperately trying to leave South Florida for slower, quieter, greener pastures elsewhere and seemingly every fucking day some twisted shit gets dropped in my lap that puts that finish line further and further away no matter how hard I try. For the limp-dicked nutless fuck-all I get accomplished in life I should belong to a team called the Ex-Men. Oh, and playing over the end credits was one of my Dad and me's favorite artists playing one of our favorite songs of his. Fuck's sake, Logan, the hell are you doing to me? Dude even looks like my dad does now.

Anywho, I did have fun razzing my dad comparing him to Prof. Chuck. He was at least amused that I compared his night terror screaming freakouts with Ol' Chuck's telepathic meltdowns from not taking his meds on time, which is something else my dad enjoys as one of his hobbies that tends to send me into a silent berzerker rage. I'm definitely going to start calling him the Professor now. So, uh, yeah, TMI, but this was a rare film whut totally did.....it for me. I give Logan a fully loaded 6 out of 6 bullets and you can't miss with that.

Photographic evidence of the Professor and my very own wild-eyed X-23 and Lonerd himself lest you think I'm fuckin' about with Jandard issue tall tales.

That was a phenomenal review janerd.

One thing though, wasn't it heavily implied(to the point of confirming it) that one of Charles unintentional psychic attacks was what killed the X Men?

Anyways, thanks for the great read.

Thanks man! I always try to keep it, uh, interesting. And yeah, I definitely missed hearing Charles cop to wiping out the X-Men during what was effectively his deathbed confessional right before shit went horrifically sideways.

I looked it up to see where he mentioned it and that was indeed the spot. That scene visually might have hit a bit too close to home visually for me so I might have spaced on the dialogue a bit. Then the thing with X-24 happened and I was in a bit of shock for the next ten minutes as the rest of that sequence played out.

In fact I'm still in a bit of shock that was a big budget studio film which was allowed to let the Wolverine character breathe like that. Thanks again Deadpool!

Also, Jackman just has to show up in Deadpool 2, even for the briefest of moments. My dream scenario is him finally in the yellow suit but with his height in the comics using some Chris Evans/Captain America body altering CGI. People. Would. SHIT.
