OOfficial Discussion Thread for: SmackDown/205 Double Header (April 18, 2017)

Tonight on SmackDown: the blue brand starts getting its act together for the first post-Shake-Up SD-only PPV, Backlash (in 5 weeks)... our main event will be a 6-way match to determine the next challenger for the WWE Title, which will presumably still be Randy Orton...

Not only is the timing awkward (as if SD is just punting the "House of Horrors" and not even pretending Bray's a threat to the belt), but the 6 men participating don't exactly represent SD's top 6 contenders, nor the most compelling grouping of one-on-one rivalries available... Luke Harper and Erick Rowan can be defended, I guess.... but Mojo Rawley and Jinder Mahal? The fuck?!?!???? And rounding things out, you've got Sami Zayn and Dolph Ziggler, the former of whom is a fine choice, but the latter of whom has seen his heel turn fizzle and who is feuding with Shinsuke Nakamura (who is noticeably absent from this line-up)....

It's all a giant head scratchers, if you ask me.... especially considering that everybody and their uncle expects Baron Corbin to be Orton's next challenger, and he's not even in the match... unless this is a match to determine a challenger for an obligatory Orton title defense next Tuesday on free TV (to somehow make up for the WWE Title being defended on RAW's airwaves, instead of SD's, this month), none of this makes much sense...

AJ Styles and Kevin Owens feuding over the US Title is altogether more exciting and interesting than anything involving Orton and the WWE Title, at least, and so therefore, their absences from the #1 Contender Match makes perfect sense.... and while those two will have a date with destiny at Backlash, Owens is going to amuse and entertain us by replicating John Cena's old Open Challenge, starting tonight...

And just spit-ballin', but: does the Owens/Jericho match at Payback really need the US Title? Their issue is 100% personal, and with Jericho's lame duck status, it's not like there's a whole lot of faith in Jericho winning the belt back... could SD really be out to swerve us tonight?

And if so, does this not seem to point to only two possibilities (men who are suspiciously absent from the 6-man)? Baron Corbin and Shinsuke Nakamura.... allow me to spin a yarn for you in which we shall not speak of Barry C, and instead, Nakamura scores a huge upset win, and wins the "Face of America" Challenge... Owens then takes next week to focus on his Death Feud with Jericho, and returns his attention to SD, where he's owed a US Title Rematch, AJ Styles is still owed his match, and where Dolph Ziggler has remained a thorn in Nakamura's side this whole time....

Fatal Fourway at Backlash, babay! If that happens, then and only then will tonight's strange 6-man and suspicious US Title defense, both of which seem to be happening "out of order" in terms of temporal causality, be rendered sensible....

Naomi's got the Women's Title, and while you just know that WWE can't wait to get Charlotte a run with the belt, I'm wondering if a face turn won't come first... for one, Charlotte already has a built in respect element from the crowd, and it wouldn't take much to turn that credibility and gravitas into actual likeability (Charlotte was definitely in the face role last week against Nia Jax)... and for two, does anyone actually expect Tamina to click as a babyface on SD? Just flipping those two could make all kinds of sense... so while you take some time to turn Charlotte, you plug in Carmelssworth as the #1 Contender to Naomi...

The Usos are pretty much done with American Alpha (who, in turn, are moving on to a secondary feud against the Shining Stars).... and while the long term play is no doubt Usos vs. New Day for SummerSlam, they need something in the near term.... Zack Ryder should be getting ready to return, so can we all just agree that Mojo Rawley is fun only in small doses, and put the Hype Bros back together?

BONUS COVERAGE: WWE hasn't announced much with regards to "205 Live," but as I mentioned in the RAW Preview last night, an Austin Aries/Jack Gallagher vs. Neville/TJ Perkins tag match makes all the sense in the world... and after the events of RAW, it makes even more sense now... Swann/Foxy/Dar and Kendrick/Tozawa are the divisions other two going concerns...

That is all. End communication....

The flOOr is yours, OO Nation. Don't wait till after 11pm to post, either. Pre-show previewing and prognosticating is certainly welcome. So discuss, debate, and rate!

Excited for the chance of Orton vs Zayn next week. Nobody else makes sense except maybe Rowan as one final fuck you to the Family.

If Usos vs New Day is something that will be held off till SummerSlam, I'd love for Harper to show Rowan life outside the family and turn him face. Another round of Usos vs Harper and Rowan with the alignments reversed would be awesome.

Friggin' ice polo has pre-empted our TUESDAY LIVE! airing of SmackFace. Unless my countrymen-and-wimmen are watching online via Sportsnet NOW!, Canadian content will not be provided until Wednesday, unless there's an outbreak of beaver flu. In which case, the pandemic will not be televised.

If WWE is in full replace Khali mode why the fuck didn't they bring in Sonjay Dutt? Creeper Sonjay has 78x the value Jinder does.

Anway, hey everybody whines about matches being predictable.

After a couple of minutes of deliberation I'm cool with Jinder winning the #1 contender match. He can cut a decent generic heel promo, and I'd much rather watch the Bollywood boys as Jinders lackys than watch them ruin my 205 live viewing experience.

Jinder is 100% more canadian than Mr Dutt. Also, Sonjay Dutt is a producer for Impact Wrasslin. I presume he didn't want to take the pay cut.

Okay, being serious for a minute, maybe he didn't want to go from a relatively stable lifestyle to the travelling schedule of the WWE.

Jinder Mahal getting a WWE title shot on PPV actually makes complete sense when you think about it: first he was a jobber in Three Man Band. Then he got released from the WWE. Then he got brought back a year or two later and served as a jobber to the stars for the past six months. The next logical step after that is number one contender to the WWE title and getting said title shot on PPV.

My only hope is that Bray wins the WWE title off of Orton and takes it to RAW. Then Smackdown pulls some kind of "we signed Lesnar" swerve and Lesnar destroys Mahal in two minutes during the midcard of some PPV.

WWE actually had offered Sonjay a full-time position as a Performance Center coach, but he didn't want to uproot his family and move to Florida, so he instead took the job with Impact, which presumably only requires him to travel to Florida 4-5 days at a time, 3-4 times per year.

I was mainly joking about that scenario, but really, it makes sense. Why send Bray to RAW right after suffering yet another defeat at the hands of Orton, especially in his own "House of Horrors" (whatever the fuck that turns out to be) match, when you could bring him in as WWE champion and immediately kick off a feud with Finn Balor? Then, you also don't have to really give Jinder Mahal a WWE title shot on PPV if it's just Brock killing him.

If you seen't it live how are you still alive at this point? I'd have died of chafing and blood loss long ago.

Insanity peppers aside, I'm with you there. If they're going to go nuts and allow for a bit of chaos as the dust settles, I'd prefer your scenario. Realistically speaking, Jinder can fill the no harm no foul R-Truth vs. Cena enhancement/thanks for playing spot from a couple years back given his enhanced monsterous physique these days. As always though, The E is like the Walking Dead in that they have a decent framework to operate from but stubbornly and Dunn-ly rely on utterly vapid, wandering, or underdeveloped characters ambling us to the season-opener/mid-season break/season-finales that matter, regardless of the tepid build-up episodes in-between. Or something.

Also, in keeping with tonight's theme, NSFW tiddies. Y'wel'cum.

I'm almost positive that Mahal's Title shot is for a throwaway SD. I think we're getting the most obvious and boring result. Orton beats Bray, beats Mahal on SD, and then beats Corbin at the SD ppv.

Barring any swerves happening between now and then, WWE.com officially has Orton vs Mahal happening at Backlash.

Or, as has been the case previously, The Mainstream Exposure that Mahal/Mojo have got because of GRONK somehow equals ...something? I dunno what the hell the result will be, but we know "Vince" loves that mainstream attention.

Except Jinder is more Canadian than Indian. He might speak the appropriate languages, but India won't necessarily embrace him as "one of their own". If they want somebody to appeal to India, why not poach Mahabali Shera? They've been picking up all kind of TNA... sorry, Impact Wrestling guys, so they might as well throw him into the shopping cart too.

Speaking of Khali, I saw an ad (not in English) where he's selling cement for a big brand name Indian cement company. The gist of it is, he's so big & strong that his whole world crumbles around him unless he uses their product to build things. It was visually amusing, and I suspect the dialogue would be too, if I understood it.

I hope this sudden ascension from midcard JTTS to number one contender isn't the first chapter in the saga of Jinder "Bradshaw" Mahal. JBL's out of nowhere main event push is immediately what sprung to mind for some reason.

I don't know, I'm going to give it a chance, but eh. I find anti-American heel gimmicks boring and tiresome (and am equally annoyed that they're going that route with Owens, who has no need of such cheap heat). Jinder's not the worst wrestler, but he's very plain and unremarkable, a throwback to the days of the generic hoss in the late 2000s. His contending feels so much like obvious time killing that it makes me think they might pull the trigger on the title win just for the sake of a SHOCKING SWERVE.

Of all the guys, in that match, the only one I wanted to see win less was Mojo because I fucking hate Mojo. But yes, I would've preferred #1 contender Erick Rowan over him, so that's definitely not an endorsement of Jinder.

I'm still not sold on Primo & Epico, but ditching the Shining Stars gimmick was SO the right thing to do.

I feel bad for Naomi if they're going to have Charlotte just steamroll her and take the title. On the other hand, she's obviously the center of the division now whether she has the belt or not. I get a weird feeling the heel alliance is going to jump Charlotte, cost her the match and turn her face. And Becky being the only SD woman not even to appear on the show has surely caused royberto to immolate himself as the prophecy is fulfilled.
