Love, prison style?

So I was teasing one of my bosses the other day that if she kept making me do work I'd start writing to various prison, and/or cults posing as her in search of a man... we teased back and forth for a bit and I went back to my desk and googled something like "inmate love" or "date a con"... struck paydirt right way, and sent her the link to further the joke. At .the end of the day she wandered by my desk and joked that some of those con's were pretty good looking (I only grabbed the link and glanced long enough to make sure I wasn't sending her some caged heat porn link). I was bored later that evening and thought I'd look over the site for myself....

Lot's of lovely ladies on there... yeah, stabbings are a possibility, but on the plus side it's nowhere near as expensive as a mail order Russian Bride, or even the less expensive Philippines mail order bride...

Kidding aside; I started guessing what these people were in for (the site is actually more of a pen pal thing than a date a con thing) based on their listed release dates, and thanks to the complete lack of privacy that "criminals" enjoy (I'll elaborate more on the quotation marks below) in the USA, pretty much their entire arrest records and personal details are readily available... right down to their cell number, and on one site a handy set of graphs on the make up of what kind of cons share space with them on their wing, pod, or what have you in the crowbar hotel... sortable to boot.

What astonished me is that a lot of these people were in prison for drug possession.... more specifically marijuana possession.... it would seem in some cases a few years can be added on if you are caught in a DFZ... which google tells me in Texas in particular is what's called a drug free zone; meaning you earn extra time if its within a 1000 feet of a school or park. A couple of ladies I looked at were doing 8 year stretches for this heinous crime of maybe being in a house adjacent to a park, and smoking a joint.

Now kidding about finding romance in prisons aside, I'm about the most anti-drug person I know, but even I think it's complete bullshit to not only ruin the rest of someone's life by marking them as an ex-con for life, but to also lock them up with murderers for eight years for getting busted smoking pot... hell, even if it were coke that seems like a pretty heavy sentence... especially when you consider that a lot of these people were fairly young when this happened, and will now more than likely barely eek by for the rest of their lives on whatever job most ex-cons are lucky enough to get.

Anyway... I think I'm understanding this whole DFZ thing... not sure how many states employ this, but this seems appalling... I get that drugs, and drug related crimes are a huge problem, but with America leading the way in locking up its citizens this seems like a huge issue.... what's more, it seems like there is also a whole other issue about prisons profiting off of cons and their families; some prisons will allow you no more than a post-card sized letter, others can get email, others can't... but most of it is filtered through a pay sites like Jmail, or are subjected to much higher charged collect call rates via phone lines owned by the prisons themselves.

Anyone else have any insight on stiff prison sentences for what seem like minor crimes... am I understanding these drug crimes right (like are these just the current charges but they are in reality third strike life long cons?). Or for shits and giggles has anyone ever written a con via one of these pen pal programs.... some of the profiles are.... interesting to say the least... like I said the dating thing was just a joke (I'm not quite that desperate... yet) but in some cases I genuinely feel bad for some of these folks... men and women alike (I'm talking the non-violent crimes, although even in reading press clippings about some of the violent crimes it's interesting to chart where some peoples lives have gone off the rails).

Just so this the thread is worth it otherwise I give you this:

Wait, wait, wait...are you telling I could have been nuking some Orange Is The New Black-style pyongyang all this fucking time just by going on some Conjob Handjob website?!?! Where they're caged and can't escape my 'romantic overtures' and can't get out to harass me with the obligations of boyfriendery? Goddamn, Canadians are useful.

As to the other topic, I've always been curious as to why weed is so verboten at this point. Yeah yeah Big Tobacco, Alcohol, Pharma lobbies aside. My Jannerhole can get pretty conspiratorially stretched with Alex Jones shape-shifting Illuminati lizard people insanity stuff sometimes, but I've always thought the main reason weed is illegal, still a Schedule 1 narcotic considered more dangerous and of no medicinal value that's worse than meth and oxy (y'know, the murderous epidemic drugs) no less, is financial.

Imagine, if yew wheeyull daddeh, if the U.S. Gov ever said, "Yeah no, no yeah we made a mistake about the Mary Jane stuff soooooo, our bad. You guys that we put in the system for decades with the rapists and murderers and pederasts for selling a couple ounces, uh, no harm no foul right?" The Saul Goodmans that would and rightfully should pour out of the woodwork to sue said government for EVERY-FUCKING-THING they've done to poor schlubs that smoked, ingested and/or sold a fucking plant, well, TBH, I don't think they've invented financial payout numbers that high yet.

Also, this is the Premium Content I come to the political threads for.

Also2, F U Canadienne hosers that get countrywide legal soon.

Also3, Jon Stewart weed rec for sheilding from the bOOard's anti-weed Stewart suckers. I refer to it as the Choom Gang Gambit. Well played Janman. Well played indeed.

I've gotten a laugh out of a few of my reprobate friends on this issue, mostly because they're so hilariously contemptuous of the pie in the sky approach the government is taking, like there's suddenly going to be a tax bonanza from thousands of shops and grow-ops happily registering themselves as legal businesses, or from customers paying sales tax on a bag of weed or pre-rolled blunts. My pals are experienced chronics and have been growing their own for years now, mostly for personal use as well as for some extra cash. When it's legalized up here absolutely none of them have any attention at all of buying it from any pot shops that open up. They're all like why the fuck should they pay sales tax on something that's not as good or powerful as what they're already growing themselves. Ditto with the one guy I know who is absolutely involved in a large size grow-op. Like he's gonna start paying taxes to the government, register his product with the food & drug bureaucracies, submit himself to a government-dictated quality control regimen, and start paying unemployment insurance & pension deductions for his handful of "employees" who are already making money hand over fist for themselves in the black market.

This is nothing like Prohibition where a legal industry got shut down. The brewing and distilling infrastructure was still there when it was re-legalized so the makers didn't miss a step. Legalizing pot is completely different because it's developed it's own highly efficient methods of distribution and finances. You know the right connections you can get it for cheap. Grow your own and you have it for even cheaper. Anyone who goes to a shop to buy it at a higher price to cover taxes and overhead for the business selling it, just because it's "legal", is nothing but a schmuck.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/23/politics/john-ehrlichman-richard-nixon-drug-war-blacks-hippie/

"The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people," former Nixon domestic policy chief John Ehrlichman told Harper's writer Dan Baum for the April cover story published Tuesday.

"You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or blacks, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin. And then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities," Ehrlichman said. "We could arrest their leaders. raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."

"She was warned. She was given an explanation. Nevertheless, she persisted."

"The powers of the president to protect our country are very substantial and will not be questioned."

Well, then I guess I'm a schmuck, as are countless other people. Are people who shop at grocery stores also schmucks because they could grow their own food but don't? I'm a pretty busy person, so calling random people and hoping they might have something to sell isn't the best use of my time. I also hardly have a green thumb, not to mention growing is still illegal in much of the country. Or, I could drive down the street and get it anytime I want. Why would I go through the hassle of finding it or growing it when I can just get it?

SCHMUCK!

Sorry, no offense was intended. Keep in mind that I`m in Canada, where we go out of our way to make things about three times more expensive and five times more complicated than it ever needs to be. A store here is going to have to have approval from three levels of government and navigate through a labyrinth of regulatory red tape that is not comparable to anything on the US side of the border. That`s why my contacts aren`t going to bother going legit. There`s no upside for them in it if the overhead of going legal costs them too much profit.

Being Canada the penalties they`ll get for being tax dodgers will be worse than what they faced as dealers or traffickers. For fuck`s sake, up here we just sent a guy in Quebec to prison for eight years for stealing maple syrup from a tree farm. Drunk drivers who kill people or juvenile delinquents that murder other kids usually get less than five years for something way more damaging and serious.

You're operating in the realm of high-pot-hetical theory here. I have "a guy" who gets good deals on stuff. When he's not around, or his guys don't have anything, would I appreciate being able to go to the corner-store and pick up some get-me-through pre-rolled spliffs? Yes.

Convenience is a hell of a thing. So much so, in fact, that it spawned a subtype of stores. You may be familiar with the Circle-K? 7-11? Other large CONVENIENCE store operations? Plus, living in an apartment building reduces my grow-op power. Even if I had windows on the right side of the building to catch the proper amount of sunlight, (or wanted to invest in hydroponic accessories, which is quite a significant startup cost as far as I know) I'm not sure my neighbors would want the smell of growing grass oozing through their walls.

You're not seeing the trees for the forest, monsieur.

We're still the country where you can't get beer at 711, as opposed to our American friends who can get it at the grocery store. Or our Japanese friends who can buy it from vending machines on the gad street. Blunts will be available at the convenience store about the same time you can get a Maritime beer out west without paying an extra fifty percent in inter provincial tariffs and taxes. Canada is so far behind the curve on not getting in the way of harmless little freedoms like this it isn't even funny.

Considering the amount that the Toronto police keep netting in their unlicensed pot shop raids I would guess that legal or not, there is still a serious amount of revenue to be had from those that would choose to purchase over growing.

What I'm a bit curious about is why; when the government at least here in Ontario, reaps all of the revenue from selling booze (with the exception of wine) and lottery tickets, would privatize this... even the whole contemplating selling booze in liquor stores bit baffles me.

Don't get me wrong, it would be convenient... but vice is always going to be a thing; and with Canada being the land of taxes, why not keep all of that for yourself and cut some of our other taxes a touch... or pay shit off.

Several years ago (eh... maybe as much as two decades? Memory is hazy) the Canadian government sold off Petrocan for a couple billion no doubt thinking that hey... Gas will be obsolete in a few years.... wrong, and probably wrong for the next decade or more... Ditto on the Ontario government basically selling away the 407 (a toll highway for our non-Ontario residents) to an Italian company... again; seems like one of those things that would be a great money maker for many many years to come.

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about the legalization of Marijuana (and other drugs)... I don't like drugs as a rule but I recognize that locking up addicts and recreational users is neither a cost effective means of fighting drugs, or traffickers. In saying that I do believe that much like say posting a 100km speed limit when you know everyone goes 120km fining minor drug usage might operate as a bit of a braking effect... IE people are always going to break the law to an extent, so you set the bar a bit lower than you really want it... I also don't like the idea of the accessibility maybe meaning that youths would have access to it... yeah it'd still be illegal; but the more that's out there and readily available the more it's accessible... counter argument is that it is till out there to a fair extent and kids will be kids... still, whatever way we opt to go it's a far cry from locking up pot smokers for years with murderers.

Good points, Pad. I suppose I should amend my thoughts on this to the same degree I've had to do so on flying cars a la Jetsons: Not in my lifetime, but eventually.

Thanks a bunch, Buzz Killington.

Come down to Seattle, where competition has made it so you can get weed cheaper in a recreational store than you can on the street, with a lot more variety. Sure, the really good stuff might cost you more, but you can choose to get a big jar of shake for peanuts if you want. Plus, going in to the store and being able to see the information - THC and CDB content, who the grower is, ability to get it in different delivery systems (flowers, wax, oils, edibles, drinkables) and such is so much better than going to that dude who you meet on the side of the street to buy whatever he happens to have.

Not at all for suckers.

Back to jailbirds:

I knew a dude 10-15 years ago who was a nice enough guy but one of the most desperate people ever who I'd ever met - he was doing the prison girl thing - was telling me about the website and how he really connected with one gal who he couldn't wait for her to get out of prison (I think it was a year from that point). I don't remember what she was in for, but when he showed me the website, and showed me the ones he contacted before really connecting with one (and yes, you get to see what they were locked up for and for how long!) All I can really say is that I it made me really question this ppor guy's self-esteem. Anyway, I don't really have a point, just that I have a story related to this.

Also, fuck Jeff Sessions.

Yeah.... some of us guys do some very weird things for some lovin'... but I guess it takes all types to make the world go round, and even those lady (and male) cons need some strange that doesn't involve a shiv and some laundry/shower room gang rape...

For me just even playing it out in my mind makes the whole premise fall apart as it spirals from hey... Michigan ain't that far... to good lord that's creepy.. like there was one hot chick in Michigan and it was like imagining myself crossing the border and driving 3-5 hours:

Border Patrol guy: "So why're you entering the US today, and how long will you be here"

Me: "Well, I'm going to hopefully bump uglies with a con I wrote a letter to... if all goes well I'll be in the US about an hour or two tops.... er, I mean... uh, cross border shopping?"

Border Patrol guy: "yeah.... you can't come in."

Me: "No worries; it just dawned on me how low I've sunk; time to join the church of scientology and gain back some dignity"

Anyway... what a strange tangent from teasing my hot boss with threats of adding her name spam mailing lists, to discovering date a con websites, to outrage at how smoking a plant can ruin your life.... Gotta love the internet.
