WWE Mae Young Classic

It's official. This can serve as the pre, live, and post-show discussion thread.

What names would you like to see? What names do you think we will see?

Is this the thing that Marti Belle & Mia Yim (Jade?) are reportedly lined up for? I don't remember where I read that, but it was on one of the websites my googlephone keeps suggesting "Because You're Interested In WWE/Pro-Wrestling..."

I wouldn't mind seeing those two anywhere, honestly. I kind of liked The Dollhouse members not named Taryn Terrell (though she did step up her game in the process).

I would do pretty much anything for that to be true.

As long as the adult hand is there to present the trophy to the eventual winner I'll be happy.

This is it. Also the thing that Kairi Hojo and Io Shirai are rumored to debut in.

I'm pretty excited about this. I'm an unabashed fan of women's wrestling, but I haven't been willing to spend money to see Shimmer or track down a lot of it where it's all disparate and broken up out in the world. I discovered a lot of talents I've grown to really enjoy through the Cruiserweight Classic and I'm hoping to find some more through this.

If JR does play by play, who should do color? Lita? Trish? Mickie? MIKE TENAY?!?

Trish is probably above their pay grade, Lita isn't so nice on the ears, so I'm hoping for Mickie. For some reason, I think Molly Holly would do a great job.

I'm thinking Renee Young would be really good. I could see them bring out Lita for this, even if her voice isn't the best, her ability to put the girls over would probably be really strong.

Also, are there any female play-by-play announcers out there?

If'n I remember rightly, I thought I saw somewhere that it might be Renee and Charly Caruso.. But take that with a shaker of salt, since I can't properly source it.

Renee did a month or two of "hybrid commentary" on NXT very early on in her tenure. They had a small stable of commentators available, and depending on the exact configuration of the table, she leaned towards PBP sometimes, color the others, and if it was a 3-person table, usually played the middle. And she was pretty good.

So hell yeah, that's something I can get behind.

If we go 3-person booth (and that seems to be WWE's preference these days), Sara del Rey would be VERY capable of being the Expert Voice to lend a little extra appropriate flavor to a b-crew of WWE regulars. Especially if some of these women are already set as eventual developmental/main roster talents (which is sure to be the case with Shirai and Hojo), and Sara's gonna be the one training with them daily.

Also, if there's a plan in the works to keep Mauro on the payroll in some capacity, just so he doesn't go blabbing about what a dickhead JBL is, these special events would be right in his wheelhouse (he brought a lot to the CWC, and would do the same here). Paired with the freedom to take some outside gigs (like Lawler's deal was for all those years), it might be the perfect arrangement for both sides...

I believe Lita did some commentary on Sunday Night Heat back in 2002-03, while she was rehabbing a neck injury, so she might make some sense for this. She's the only woman I can remember doing commentary for WWE with any sort of regularity, at least since awkward Stephanie Wiand in the mid-1990s.

This could be one of the greatest ideas in the history of Our Sport.

Meltzer is reporting that the Mae Young Classic was named because Stephanie McMahon was especially close to her. It is reported that Mae Young was the one who taught Steph how to handle double penetration.

I'm fine with the name. Hell, as long as its not named after Moolah or Sunny, I'd be fine with pretty much any name.

I'd be good with Molly on commentary

http://www.fightful.com/report-several-participants-confirmed-mae-young-classic

Ten names reportedly have been confirmed for the tournament. PW Insider broke the news and is reporting the following individuals will be part of the 32-woman field:

Zhao Xia: the first Chinese female to sign a developmental contract with WWE, Xia reported to the Performance Center in February.

Mary Kate: Known as Rosie LottaLove in TNA, she took a prolonged hiatus from wrestling, during which she lost more than 100 pounds and reinvented herself as Andrea on the independent circuit and in Japan. This Team 3D Academy graduate has been working NXT live events for the past several months.

Bianca Blair: Another mainstay on live NXT events, Blair signed with WWE in April of last year.

Danielle Kamela: A former on-air personality for Fox Sports Arizona and cheerleader for the Arizona Cardinals, Kamela has made a couple of appearances on NXT TV. She was trained by Rikishi before signing with WWE.

Julia Ho: Trained by Brian Kendrick, Ho has modeling experience and is a former amateur MMA fighter.

Kimberly Frankele: Better known as Kimber Lee, the former CHIKARA Grand Champion signed at the same time Ruby Riot did and has been working NXT live events while also making a handful of appearances on NXT TV -- all in losses.

Lacey Evans: This ex-Marine has been on a few episodes of NXT and recently had a name change from her real name, Macey Estrella.

Victoria Gonzales: The daughter of Rudy Boy Gonzales, who is best known for co-running the Texas Wrestling Academy with Shawn Michaels, signed with WWE last year.

Sarah Logan: Known as Crazy Mary Dobson on the indies, she worked live NXT events as Sarah Bridges before being given the Logan surname prior to her debut on NXT TV.

Taynara Melo: A black-belt in judo originally from Brazil.

I hope that Sara del Rey is in this tournament. She deserves exposure of a big stage for being one of the best wrestlers in the last ten years.

I'd also like to see Kellie Skater and Nicole Matthews in this. Matthews did do a NXT match, so I do think she'll be in it. Darn shame that Portia Perez has had to retire, because she'd be awesome in this.

And, for what she's done for Shimmer, I would like to see Alison Danger in this as well.
