While maybe a bit paint by numbers the Jinder/Orton match wasn't too bad... the finish was what you expected, and the whole legends spot served it's purpose.

How funny is it that after all of their squabbling over the Wrestlemania match that didn't happen Shaq is all over this PPV in those ads.

Going into the men's MITB match I'm far more excited now to see who might jump the rail and decide this match for us... Cameraman? A lady wrestler? Janerd?

You see the Ascension.

I still see the light.

The Ascension are the only already-existing tag team who were also a tag team in Southpaw. And now, their Real World WWE Value is zero.

SO, SAY HELLO TO THE SURFER DUDES.

Granted, one of them looks like he ate 3 Samoans (and also inherited their body type/metabolism), and the other has my hairline (but insists upon the Ben Franklin, instead of just shaving it).... but if we're talking about a story to get the Fashion PoPo over, do we really care about these things?

I think this can somehow work. Maybe. Maeby....

Controversial start to Men's MitB....

Conventional wisdom is Nakamura is now a no-brainer for a run-in "surprise" win, but I think WWE's got options.

I'm still in to see how this plays out. Lots of things still on the table, including Jericho being back sooner than later (WWE recently trademarked "Rockstars" for a new name/gimmick, and that's perfect for Shin and Jericho, right?).

So, no Nak for at least most or all of the match. Neat.

I'm definitely thinking the WWE is planting people in the crowd to do extreme facial reactions (which sounds like a really messed up porn thing now that I'm writing it) as they seem to catch people over reacting a little too perfectly.

So we have current WWE champion Jinder Mahal and now the 99% likelihood of future WWE champion Baron Corbin?

Ambrose won a year or two back.. I think he was the last face to win it.

The men's MITB was pretty damned good; and as a guy who's not overly familiar with Shinzu I thought he came across looking like a million bucks. Corbin winning does nothing for me, but it's the safe win for the WWE, although I suspect it will make Corbin even less likeable than he already is as we suffer through him dragging out his cash in.

That's my biggest fear too. Like, I don't need eight months of Baron Corbin running around with the MITB briefcase. And my next biggest fear is that the WWE is going to have him cash it in after someone awesome like Styles or Nakamura wins the title.

I don't think that's the problem. If you watch FOX baseball or anything, they all do the same thing, and the real problem is that there is a dedicated cam (or 2) to scanning the crowd for random attractive people and reactions, which are spastically intercut into the Actual Content and ruining the Actual Content's gravitas and flow.

I hate that the cut-aways exist. I don't think they over-produce the cutaways, or pay extras for them. But I think they put an extra camera or two on the fans, analyze it, and by the 3rd or 4th match of the night, they know who'll give them a Reaction Shot.

WWE isn't paying people to tell their stories. But they are doing a very inefficient job of using their fans as a resource, if they are scouring for the One Facial Reaction, instead of just listening to Our Overriding Opinion.

Or people intentionally do extreme facial reactions in the hopes they get on camera.

I'll probably post a bit more in detail tomorrow or later tonight, but I have to admit that overall I found MitB to be fairly underwhelming. Nothing terrible, just not a lot to really get behind as being memorable in a good way, either. Pretty much every match ended with me sort of shrugging.

I thought it was a fun enough PPV but hot damn the finishes of both MiTB matches were SHITE. And yes, that basically means the men's version was because fucking CORBIN won. But goddamn that was an excellent match up until that happened.

A couple of positives from the PPV -

-Holy FUCK Owens took some sick bumps. That man is mental.

-Lana's ring gear.

As far as the extreme facial reactions thing goes... yeah, I guess I was just being too cynical for my own good; it's also just as likely the WWE sits on these thing and plugs them in at any point later in the show as needed... kind of like the WWE version of the laugh track.

Tonight was pretty lousy IMO; I think it exposed how thin the rosters are, but even that you could live with... that ladies MITB finish was beyond bad; that wasn't just a booking decision you don't like, it was near offensive and shows just how far off the mark the WWE remains when it comes to booking the ladies.

The Uso's match was okay- and I get wanting to protect the New Day while still setting up a reason for the teams to continue feuding, but that's what post-match stuff is better for establishing... like have the New Day eat the pin, but post match they clear house or something.

Jinder and RKO was decent, but the problem is that the whole feud and both guys are just underwhelming... like I said at the start of the thread; I think the SD side going into Summer Slam should be a triple threat.

Lana and Naomi was a surprise, but again... that finish overshadowed the match.

The Fashion Police stuff was fun, until they got in the ring... maybe if my first exposure to the Ascension was in NXT first I'd be more on board with them, but it wasn't and because of that it's hard to find them anything but suck.

I really liked the men's MITB... Corbin is a choice, one that I don't agree with, but the match was good and the finish wasn't so terrible (or unexpected) that it ruined the show... the WWE did a good enough job of that with the first hour of their show.

Tonight wasn't WORST EVER!!!! But it sucked... Summer Slam with both rosters could be exciting, but the WWE has to do better than they've been doing at the last several PPV's...

Everything on this show was absolute garbage, until the men's ladder match. It doesn't matter if you like or don't like Corbin winning, that was the best booked MITB match I can ever remember seeing. From Nakamura being attacked before the match, all the spots Zayn was a part of, Owens taking the so many bumps and the face-off between Styles and Nakamura. It was riveting from beginning to end!

I believe it's because OO has higher standards when it comes to our whimsical snarkery, hence no one going for the low-hanging fruit of that particular comment.
