I'd mark out at a concert to hear Rush play Tom Sawyer live but when it's on the radio it's pretty much change the channel ASAP.
They talk about newspapers dying out thanks to modern technology. It's be pretty damn good if the same sort of effect, either thru Sirius or
people using Sync/USB systems to play their own things as they wanted, happened to FM radio. Radio when I was younger turned me into the music fan I
am today. I don't know if they got worse or if I just got too old but now I can't even listen to it anymore thanks to some of the stupid
things they keep doing.
I think this phenomenon can also be blamed on sporting events. You can pretty much guarantee that you'll hear the opening of "Welcome To The
Jungle" or "Hell's Bells" or "The Final Countdown" during any football game you might be viewing. And the most random one I've ever
seen - Crowds of all sports adopting the "Seven Nation Army" melody. Where the fuck did that come from? I saw Jack White in concert a month or two
ago and I thought he might not play it due to oversaturation and sure enough he closed with it and the crowd went fucking bonkers, natch.

I actually give my bitching a break if the signature song happens in a concert. Just because I, or someone else, doesn't like the signature song
doesn't mean that the band playing it does. Plus it always gives the crowd a cheap pop, plus it can also turn out to be something unique if the
band does something beyond the commercial version like Foo Fighters did when they began playing Times Like These in concert done acoustically.
Most of my complaints revolve around the industry, which is distinctly different from the medium. The medium is the artists working their asses off to
earn what they get. The industry is the recording labels and radio pricks that don't want to move past beating a dead horse some more.

Tesla - Love Song.
The band had some great licks - Modern Day Cowboy, Changes, Edison's Medicine and was the better hard rock bands from the late 80s, but this
song is a dog. I hated the late 80s early 90s hit when the only rock songs that got radio play were the infamous power ballad. This is one of the
worst power ballads from one of the better bands of the era.
I agree with Tom Sawyer and Rush. It isn't that Tom Sawyer is a bad song; it's just the worst song on Moving Pictures.

Same here basically. Although I don't hate "Tom Sawyer", I always wonder why they don't play other songs from their vast catalog, even
old catalog.
The one I can't stand is "Closer To The Heart". It's always on the set list. My huge dislike of the song is such that even during
their live shows I go grab a pretzel and/or pee.

Never liked Rush although my brother is a huge fan. The only two Rush songs I like are Free Will and.....Closer to the Heart.
Also, I still don't tire of hearing Love Song by Tesla.

Just to derail this thread even further, man, I am slowly getting to that point (just turned 35 back in May...fuuuuuuucccckkkkkk). I played in and
around the Charlotte area for the last four years with my band and we did okay, in fact better than I ever dreamed we would, but never hit any kind of
big local success. Now the band is kind of unofficially broken up and I'm at that crossroads where I'm thinking "hmmm...am I too old to
rock?" Like, I feel I like I still have so much more dope ass music to make, but at the same time I don't want to eventually be that 40
year-old guy onstage still chasing his dream that all the younger folk are snickering at.
And a fun fact: salmonjunkie and I messaged back and forth a couple of years ago about doing a show together when his band was on tour, but sadly it
never materialized (mainly because Charlotte kind of sucks for local music and getting a response from a music venue here can be like pulling teeth).

Happens to the best of us. I actually got paid to play a few gigs when I was living in Europe, so technically I could call myself a former
professional musician. But for rock star kind of success? I turn forty in four days, and that ship has definitely sailed. But it was damned fun
while I did it.

Dude, I haven't even touched my basses - except to move them from one corner of the basement to another - in 2+ years. I get on a kick every few
months where I'll dick around on my keys for a while, but I haven't even done that in 3-4 months. And guitar? I tried that a year or so
ago, but my fingers were going in all the wrong spots. Yeah - looks like I'm pretty much done. I should really start thinking about selling my
stuff.

Yeah, time and reality have a way of setting in on us musician types at some point. *sigh* 
There's a metal band here in Charlotte that's pretty successful locally and seemingly have some money behind them (presumably from one of
their parents, as they have top of the line gear, merch, promotion, etc). Recently I saw one of their guitar players, who is like a 21 year-old metal
chick, post on Facebook something along the lines of "I could never work a normal 9-5 job and am so glad I get to play in a band with my friends and
not have to be a part of the everyday rat race!" And all I wanted to do was reply with "Wait until you're 30 and still trying to make it big
in music and you're unemployed and still living at home with your parents, you fucking bitch!" 
Not that I'm bitter or anything.

on the flipside, I'm pretty good friends with the guys from a hard rock band, Windowpane, who are based here in Seattle. They're an
awesome band who have toured with Tesla, Queensryche, 5 Finger Death Punch, and just played a festival in Montana on Saturday opening up for
Buckcherry. They sell out our local bigger music venue that national touring acts don't always sell out.
They're also all in their 40s, older than me, none of them have regular day jobs and are pretty much paycheck-to-paycheck with no benefits (some
of them are married to good women who have day jobs, but some of them are struggling). I have mad respect for these guys, and when they perform, they
don't seem like a bunch of dudes too old to be up there, still hanging on. They just look like what they are - a badass rock band.
I've said before to close friends that as jealous as I am that they are still trying to make it, still making new records, new fans, etc, I
wouldn't want to be in my 40s and financially struggling. And I guess that's the tradeoff. Because now that I'm where I am, doing
my 9 to 5 and going home to a nice meal and then to retire to my couch to watch the next Netflix blockbuster or episode of the CWC and content, until
I watch what my friends in this band and in other bands are still doing - still out there hustling, still out there hitting the road, and getting on
the stage and performing, and I think - holy shit I miss that - and maybe I'm still not too old for that.
Or maybe I just need to find a fun band that has a monthly residency at a local bar and I'll be happy with that.
Thom - no more playing? I thought you had some dudes you were jamming with.

Not for a while. I had one band that recorded an album - the sound was utter garbage. Then I left and joined another band - I think I posted the pics
of us recording a demo here, as I seem to remember gooker or goon asking me about my 5-string - but we broke up a couple of years ago. Since then, I
did some football officiating and took some more classes - no time for a band.
Back on topic, since sj happened to mention Queensr�che in his post, they have a song on their latest album named, "Just Us." Ugh. The rest of the
songs on the album I either like or love. That one, though, just no.

Not to dive-bomb on this "live musicians-only" thread but the above is basically a perfect summary of why I'm sure most of us do the grind
(minus the getting back on stage part). Those days that just SUCK at work I just think about the decent paycheck I make and the fun things it affords
me to do and that keeps me going. As the saying goes - I work to live; not live to work. I'm in property management so if THAT shit was
your passion growing up, you should seek immediate psychiatric counseling.
Plus, my girlfriend is pregnant so that paycheck is more important than ever

Yeah, that's a valid point and shows it is possible to do it into your 40's. I guess I was thinking more about being the 40-something year
old guy who doesn't look like a rock star but is still trying to rock onstage and thinks that that one big break is going to happen at
any moment.
I do kinda take inspiration from the late, great Peter Steele of Type O Negative though. I saw a quote from one of his friends or former bandmates
(can't remember which) one time where he basically said "Peter would have been perfectly happy keeping his day job with the NYC Department of
Parks and Recreation and just playing shows on the weekends and putting out albums at his own leisure, but then the band got too popular." So if
working 9 to 5 and playing/releasing music around that would have been good enough for Peter Steele, then it's good enough for me.
Nash is only a few inches bigger than JBL and depending on how stiff he gets Punk should be able to take it. -JB King, meant in a totally non-sexual
way
