Songs you hate by artists you love
This topic came up at work a few weeks ago and I thought it would be fun to bring up here. What are some songs that you absolutely cannot stand to
listen to by some artists that you otherwise absolutely love? Obviously, I have a few:
Billy Joel- Piano Man. I know, only the olds like Billy Joel, but I grew up with him and I love his stuff, and it seems like because Piano Man is the
only Joel song that people who don't like him actually like, it gets played 2000x more than any of his other songs. It's just kind of a
bummer of a tune and I'm done with ever wanting to hear it.
Tom Petty- Free Fallin'. I have no idea why this is Petty's go to song because there is so much better in his library, but this one really
got burned out for me a long time ago by a friend of mine who taught himself this song and pretty much only this song on the guitar. It got to be a
bit of a running gag at parties- "hide the guitar, Nate's on his way to play Free Fallin'." Anyway, overexposure plus never being that
fond of it to begin with have turned it into something that just immediately makes me belligerent when I hear it.
Counting Crows- Round Here. I should point out that I don't love current folksy Counting Crows, but I totally love the alt rock Counting Crows
of the 90s. But this song really did nothing for me. Too slow, too depressing, too angsty. Easily the worst song on their entire first album.
Michael Jackson- Ben. Say what you will about the guy and his personal life, but he made some awesome, awesome music for his time. Ben is not part of
that awesome music.

It's almost impossible to overemphasize how much that Tom Petty album was overplayed on radio and MTV at the time. It's not all that
difficult to see why when Runnin' Down A Dream or Free Fallin' are on the radio that the station gets changed ASAP. I loaded most of a Tom
Petty's greatest hits into the MP3 player, but I deliberately left those songs out because I really don't want to hear them ever again. I
put it down to the Jeff Lynne producer/co-writer effect of the late 1980's/early 1990's. Petty was hanging out with him too much.
It's also why I have a hard time listening to anything by The Travelling Wilbury's or George Harrison's solo work from the same time
period.
I spent all of high school, college, and up to about age 40 doing nothing but absorbing U2. Lived, breathed, and would have died for that band. I kept
going with them even when the albums turned into things that really only have three or four worthwhile songs on them instead of the ones where from
start to finish they were awesome. I can more than tolerate Bono too because the overall charitable good that he keeps doing for the world in general
more than makes up for his moments of being too annoying and pompous. But I still had to purge most of their songs from the player as well. Really
don't want to hear Where The Streets Have No Name or Sunday Bloody Sunday ever again.
I'll toss Bryan Adams onto the pyre as well. I'm down to about three or four songs of his that I can listen to without getting angry.
Ditto with The Beatles
You know, everyone says it's not supposed to make sense, like that's the whole point, dude. And I'm just saying, you know,
that's like an excuse for lazy storytelling. Just don't sell me shite and tell me it's gold, all right? I might be stoned, but
I'm not high. You know what I mean?

Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Under the Bridge" and "My Friends"
INXS' "Need you Tonight"
All of these fall under "making music for mass consumption and getting a video in heavy rotation on MTV" genre.

The Joker. I mostly like Steve Miller Band otherwise, but I've always fucking hated that song.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away.
Admittedly I don't love that band, but most of their singles are enjoyable. I absolutely hate that song though.
I don't hate it, but I've never been a huge fan of Foo Fighters - Everlong.

Thank you. I've enjoyed a good bit of the Chili Peppers' stuff over the years, but have never been a fan of that song. Just too repetitive

And one that I'll pick is the cover of "Smooth Criminal" that Alien Ant Farm did. I think that they're great and are one of the more
underrated rock bands of the 2000's, but I could never get into that song, even though it was a huge hit. Kind of sad that they basically got
written off as a one-hit wonder, but are way more talented than that one radio hit.

ELP - Lucky Man. Seriously - that is their most popular song here in the US?
Dream Theater - The Dark Eternal Night. Systematic Chaos is a pretty great album, but this song simply blows.
Queensryche - Almost all of their stuff from the Hear in the Now Frontier album to the Tribe album. And whatever that last album that I don't
have that was done with Geoff Tate. Their early stuff was fantastic, and the newest album (with Todd LaTorre singing) is great. But that bit between
the Promised Land Album and then (not including Mindcrime II, which was decent)? Eh, no.
Evanescence - Good Enough. Why?
Lady GaGa - Jewels 'n' Drugs. Love the new album, but I skip this song every time.
Yes - Owner of a Lonely Heart. This was their only #1 hit. Not Roundabout, And You and I, Starship Trooper, or Heart of the Sunrise. Owner of a
Lonely Heart. Seriously?

I just remembered The Offspring. I couldn't stand those silly novelty songs they did for a stretch there in the late 90s/early 2000s.
I'm glad they abandoned that crap in recent years.

Michael Jackson's Thriller is one of the greatest albums of all time and is one of my favorite albums personally.
However, I hate "The Girl Is Mine".

Same here. And for some inexplicable reason people love that song.
Not the biggest Soundgarden fan in the world, but I dig Superunkown enough to include Black Hold Sun in this conversation. I hate that song.
And as much as I loved 90's Alice In Chains, I always hated Rooster and Down In a Hole. Just too slow and boring for me. And I get it,
they're war songs and are supposed to make you feel alert and uneasy, but I just not cared for them.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I hate Rooster, but if it comes on I'll usually see if anything else is one the radio. Down in a
Hole doesn't bother me nearly as much, probably because it doesn't get close to the amount of airplay Rooster gets.

I debated putting Black Hole Sun on my list, but I recently saw Cornell in a solo acoustic show at the performance hall where the Seattle Symphony
plays (translation - amazing sound) and he did a version of that which made me forget the awfulness of the electric Soundgarden version.

Iron Maiden's Number Of The Beast is probably one of the greatest metal albums of all time. God knows I've listened to it enough to
practically have all of it memorized. Can't stand Run To The Hills though for some reason. Just hate that song. Something about the opening
guitar chords is just so annoying, like that idiotic tomahawk chop chant they do at Atlanta Braves games. The foolish video they put out for it, with
a bunch of "comical" images of Indians from 1930's and '40's movies matched up to what is supposed to be some serious lyrics,
didn't help much either.

Fun topic!
And since a lot of these choices have seemed to revolve more around "I'm freakin' sick of that song" vs. "I just never liked that song
from the first time I heard it" I'm going to try to stick with the latter for my choices -
Foo Fighters - "White Limo" - "Wasting Light" is easily one of the best albums I've heard in the last 20 years but that is the one song on
the CD I never really got into.
Nirvana "All Apologies" - As with a few other choices here, it doesn't help that this song has been played into the freakin' ground over
the years but it was always one of my least favorites by them.
Agreed with Paddle on "Run To The Hills." Amazing album but that's definitely my least favorite song off of it. Speaking of Maiden, I was
never much of a fan of "Stranger In A Strange Land" off of "Somewhere In Time." I feel like the riff was trying to rip off "Shout At The
Devil."
I love me some Pearl Jam but they've had quite a few songs that hit with a "thud" for me. The main one that comes to mind is "Given To
Fly."

The Ramones cover of "Baby I Love You". END OF THE CENTURY was produced by Phil Spector and you would think that would be a dream collaboration.
WRONG! That album sounded flat as a pancake with the Ramones almost completely drained of energy. A painful record to hear as a Ramones fanatic, with
"Baby I Love You" being downright embarrassing. (Oddly enough, that disc DOES have one of my favorite Ramones songs in "Danny Says")
And speaking of embarrassing..."Rapture", "The Tide Is High" and that whole damn AUTOAMERICAN album made me ashamed that I was once a Blondie
champion.

I always thought that "Radio Ga-Ga" was one of Queen's worst songs ever.
Once I heard a ballad by Motorhead about British soldiers in foxholes in WW2. It sounded like the Pogues or something! I get that WW2 iconography is a
major player in Lemmy's vision, but I don't want my Motorhead sounding like The Pogues (and I love The Pogues! I was so horrified that I
never wanted to know of it again, so I don't remember the title.

Chili Peppers are good for their singles, and I do really like their first album, But for the love of science, I can't find myself liking
"Californication"...I really hate that song.
I really hate the song "Capone Bone" from Capone and Noreaga, that song sucks ass and whenever I put the album 'The War Report' on my
media devices, I leave that song off.

Best place for me to say it. I have always liked and appreciated Run DMC. Maybe not "loved", but I'll listen to their stuff out of a sense
of respect and somewhat enjoy what I'm hearing.
"Walk This Way", though, regardless of Aerosmith's involvement? I really, really hate that song. With a passion. It just reached a level of
overplayed that, even if I didn't hear that song for ten years, I'd still hate it on year 11.

It Was Written was a great album, but holy shit, this song just didn't match the album in anyway. The beat, his flow, the hook.....How did he

He had that regretful period where he was Nas Escobar, did shit with P. Diddy and all that garbage, but he went back to being awesome again with
2002's God's Son. He's been hit and miss since then, but I think he went back an un-jumped the shark (that's why I hate this
term, there's always a way back to goodness). There's good stuff out of Hip-Hop Is Dead and "N".

I reserve my precious hatred for the Crue for when they do covers like Smokin' In The Boys Room or Anarchy In The UK/USA. "Fuckin'
destroy", like you drone at the end of Anarchy, Vince? Really, Vince? When exactly did you work for a living, Vince, and actually have the right to
be pissed off at society instead of living in a mansion for the last thirty years and having your recording company drop a dumptruck full of $100
bills off at your house three or four times a year? I'm gonna take advice on getting angry at The Man and burning down the world from some
spandex-clad piece of shit fucking asshole who never worked a real job in his entire life, who does drugs all the time and somehow never gets arrested
for it, bangs ho's left and right (including a shitload that count as statutory rape), and gets away with murdering people while driving drunk?

You are wrong on both accounts.
For some reason today I got Porno for Pyro's "Pets" in my head and I want it gone. I was never really a fan of that incarnation of Perry
Farrell and as mentioned earlier, not a fan of "Been Caught Stealing" and would add "Jane Says" to that list.
And fuck everything David Lee Roth did after he left Van Halen the first time.
