I don't know what it says about me but I just can't see past Baron Corbin's widow's peak mullet, soon to be a skullet, and his Walmart looking wolf sleeveless shirt to take him seriously.

A couple of thoughts: Ellsworth grabbing the briefcase was the absolute worst possible result of that match and they actually went through with it. The only way that you could even entertain that ending is if it's Carmella forcing him to do her work for her, but she was basically unconscious as he started climbing. Just an absolute disaster of a decision for that division.

Mike Kanellis is a trillion times better than Stasiak. He gets a bad rep because he's very basic and the antithesis of flashy, but the guy can more than hold up his end in the ring. Personality wise, he can use some work which is why it surprised me they let him bypass NXT. His ideal role will be in a tag team/stable, but I do love that they made him take Maria's last name.

Lana was shockingly decent.

Breezango is gold. Ascension is rust.

Corbin will cash in after Zayn beats Jinder and Owens destroys Zayn because he refuses to allow Sami to have nice things.

And finally, WWE is absolutely planting people in the audience for reactions. They may use real fans if they get the right reactions, but they are finding people way too quick with the exact perfect reaction for them not to know where to have the cameras facing. Even if you add additional cameras and get a semblance of an idea how a fan will react, they will want to ensure they get the perfect reaction first from a plant and then use a real fan's reaction if it hits what they are looking for.

That was probably as good a way as any to debut Mike Bennett. As much as I've ever heard/read about the guy, I've never seen him wrestle, and no way could I have picked him out of a lineup. If I didn't know he was married to Maria, I would've thought she was walking out there last night with Heath Slater.

And that theme song was fucking fantastic! Just cheesy and catchy... I loved it.

I kinda hope they go all Tazerface with him and this gimmick of taking his wife's surname. I would love for him to cut promos on his opponents trying to act like a bad ass, but anytime he says his name, they can't help but snicker at him.

Is everyone mad here?
Of course they are, and you are too... otherwise, you wouldn't have come here.

I initially mistook that Mike dude with Maria as Heath Slater and was concerned about those kids he said he had.

Line of the night goes to woman in the front row who screamed "Hit him in the Face of America" at Kevin Owens. Kudos to her.

I enjoy how it looks like the logo is winking at you. Can you guess what else is winking at you in this gif? Here's a hint: I'll give you ()O() guesses.

ETA: For good measure, here's a twatter page I found dedicated entirely to Lana's mud cutter. You are all very welcome.

A day later, and looking at recaps of the show to refresh it a bit, I find my opinion has only lowered from "underwhelming" to "mostly garbage." And I think it's because this PPV has been one of my favorites since Punk/Cena back in ...2011? Wow. Has it really been that long? Anyhow, the expectations for this show are higher than the average WWE ppv, and as a result I can't grade it on the same level that I would a "Backlash" or similar B-show. Random thoughts to follow:

Uh, the Woman's MitB was dogshit. Anything decent that may have happened before the finish doesn't matter. The finish was awful, and no amount of Smackdown retconning or decision will change the fact that at the moment of the actual match taking place, it had the WWE pissing in the faces of their fanbase to a large extent. It could have been a break out moment, like the woman's ironman match was awhile back. But nope.

Usos and New Day was an okay match. It just followed a match that left the fans (myself included) pissed off. The ending was a bit of a letdown, but I think if not for the match right before it, it would have been allowable. It's the first meeting of two elite teams, and a heel count out loss-but-still-retain moment is a fine opening chapter. It means we can throw a no-DQ or falls count anywhere or another gimmick into their next title match, and I'm fine with that. In fact, this is the only match that I feel improved in my head today over last night.

Naomi/Lana was uh, okay. Lana has been working hard and it shows. And her ring gear makes the dirty old man side of me ecstatic. But then we had the Carmella stuff that really did nothing and disjointed the match from "passable" downwards to "Eh" on the old Quentil scale. Again, the opener and consequences drag down the whole front half of the PPV.

Maria and Mike? I have no idea who the Mike guy is, but after looking at his wiki I think he might be a hell of a good add to the WWE. He definitely has the resume. Although his lack of gold in RoH, considering his tenure there is surprising. Was he mostly a jobber or something, people who know these things? But yeah, he looks good enough.

And I like Maria. Her ringwork and character are fine, and her ass and legs are superior.

That said? Fuck that promo. Holy shit was their promo so fucking bad. This shit shouldn't have made a regular Smackdown segment, much less a PPV. I hope they save this shit, as the people themselves are/look to be talented enough. But this gimmick is gonna be shit. THE POWER OF LOVE~~~~~!

Wow, I got a little angry there recalling that. Huh.

Jinder/Orton? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA. Oh wait, Orton had a fun 45 seconds demolishing the underlings using tables and stuff. I'll give him and the underlings their due for that. But the rest? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Fuck you, Jinder Mahal.

I like the fashion Police. I feel it's one of the most enjoyable moments of Smackdown. I love pausing it when they show the board each week and looking for Easter Eggs and the like. I enjoyed them hearing each other's internal monologues, and find their overall bits to be pure genius at their best, and harmless filler at their worst. +100 points for "Fashion Vice." Now only if this...

Oh, the Ascension? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. fuck you, the Ascension. -10000 points.

Main event was really good. The moment when Styles/Nakamura moved the ladder had my friends and I screaming out loud in support of this badassery. Everyone was fine, and then Baron Corbin wins out of no where. Look, I'm not a huge fan of Baron Corbin. I find him boring, even. But he isn't worthless, and him winning does fit the traditional idea of MitB matches having a guy on cusp cusp of the main event going over. So all of that is fine. I wish the ending had been more exciting, but the match overall was good. And it didn't have Dolph Ziggler winning after a returning Vickie Guerrerro drops him the briefcase, either.

So that's a good thing.

Overall, I'd give the ppv as a whole a 1.5 out of 5 fake stars. It might not be the worst PPV I've ever seen, but it surely wasn't even approaching mediocrity, either.

I don't believe that there is ever an acceptable situation where unannounced matches end up on the card a la the Breezango/Ascension one last night.

All that screams to me is "We are shitty at planning and either have no idea how to clock manage such that we need a 15-20 minute filler" or "We booked this shitty non-PPV worthy event and didn't want to advertise it because see beginning of this sentence".

I'm not naive or stupid enough to know that both of those things exist plentifully....just saying that that should't ever be the case.

As someone who was fine with Bennett/Kanellis in TNA (the dude can carry himself on the mic and knows how to work a match) I'm happy to see them get a shot on the big stage. That said, holy crap, that debut was rough. I hope they don't saddle Bennett(Kanellis) with the completely fawning-over-his-wife douchebag gimmick it looked like he was working last night since the dude is capable of much more.

....

Your post kind reminds me of those old Mad Magazine bits where "when they say this; this is what they really mean"... spot on analysis of how badly the WWE doesn't realize what they are really telling their fans.

I think last night was extra worse because of how thin the card was going in; and how you could have easily done a bit more work leading into this show to either build up a surprise opponent (which would have given you another reason to want to watch... although, there is no universe where the Ascension was the right answer to what team will surprise the fans... in a good way), or at the least put a bit more heat on the match so that it means something.

What the WWE told us was:
*They don't care to build a full PPV card
*They can't manage their time
*They don't care enough to build up the Fashion Police's matches to mean something
*They thought the Ascension was a good idea for a surprise.

That's just one segment/thread throughout the PPV as well... throw in the rest of the shows colossal miscalculations and it doesn't say much for their ability to give us reasons to tune in for PPV's, never mind their weekly shows. It's one thing to disagree on a direction or a choice (like say Corbin winning the MITB) but it's another when they clearly tell the fans that they don't care to do their jobs well cause' we'll just tune in anyway.

I actually got to see MITB live last night, and I got some thoughts.

It was a fun atmosphere. I know that might not be popular to say here what with everyone defaulting to that sucked/was underwhelming, but it was a lot of fun.

Women's MITB: As ironic as it is that the first women's MITB case was pulled down by a man (enter JBL comment about him being a mutant), for storyline, getting heat on Carmella, and developing her character, it was perfect. They're trying to build another viable, credible heel, and while that easily could have been done by her climbing the ladder herself, arming her with a smug sense of accomplishment will only help her out. Plus, we're getting closer to a Lynch-Ellsworth match, one that needs to be booked as Lynch beating the ever-loving brakes off of James. Aside from that, it was a fun match and Charlotte took her crazy bump, which I'm all about.

Tag titles: Good match, and holy shit were the Usos born to play a heel team. Really good heel teamwork by them. A few botches happened, but a good match and, again, the right way to book finish. The Usos are too good to take the titles off of right now, but the New Day shouldn't lose its first Smackdown PPV match. It was lame and unclean, but there's more story to tell, so I'm OK with it.

Women's title match: Lana...wasn't bad. I mean, she clearly needs more reps, but she sort of has the heel mannerisms down, and she can only get better in the ring. Carmella teasing a cash-in, then just kickin' it outside was fine with me. It's building a character. I'm hoping Naomi gets a good heel to work with, because that's definitely going to be in her best interest. She's good and will get better, but someone like Nattie or another veteran heel will elevate her. Also, I like her winning on submission. Nice wrinkle.

Fashion Vice: Nails. Everything was nails, and it played really well with the crowd, too.

Mike and Maria: Sorta flat. I couldn't tell if the gimmick is that they're in love, or they're playing the part of some couple that met on a reality show or something. We'll see what the result was.

WWE title match: Jinder's theme is awesome. Randy was way over in STL, though I think it'd be more 50/50 anywhere else. I know my hometown, and if anybody is gonna be a heel in St. Louis, it'd be Jinder Fucking Mihal. OK match; I wish we'd have gotten some Naitch chops or Cowboy Bob wearing a cast. Boy does Randy love tossing the Singh boys around. I get it, but can we stop letting Randy just drop them on their heads on the announce table. It's hard to watch.

Breezango v. The Ascension: My buddy and I were convinced it'd be heel Alphas, but it wasn't. So, this match just ended up being one that, you know, happened.

MITB match: Nice little swerve to have Baron Corbin attack Nakamura to start. Btw, Corbin hates fun and all the wonderful things that go with it, which I think is good heeling. He thrives in matches like that where there aren't rules and he can throw dudes around.

Sam Zayn was the star of this match to me. He took bumps, he did crazy shit, he nearly killed KO (that half-and-half suplex on anything other than an empty canvas makes me super uncomfortable, and I wish they'd stop). Styles, too, was pulling out his good shit, though I thought he'd be jumping off more shit than he did. I'm glad KO is still alive. A little girl sitting behind us actually got her KO action figure signed by "The New Face of America", which proves he does, in fact, just play a jerk on TV and is actually a swell guy. Zigs was...there.

Nakamura returning got a HUGE pop, and him clearing the ring was pretty cool. The staredown with Styles was over HUGE; I thought when Baron took him out to start that Shinsuke would win, but Corbin winning was the right call. He's the one person there who can really do something big with that case and it adds to his I know I've used this term a lot character development. He's totally capable of kicking ass on his own, but he prefers to be a nozzle-ass dick about it. That's the kind of character I can get behind hating.

I thought this show had the potential to be the best top-to-bottom card of the year, especially with the MITB participants. It wasn't as good as I thought it was going to be, but it was my first WWE live event in more than a decade, so I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Except it didn't get Carmella any heat. People aren't mad at her. THey are mad and bitchin towards creative. People still don't give a damn about Carmella and they ultimately insulted their female audience. Perfect that booking came nowhere close to.
