Semi-related questions...

My son just got a used 360 and has been using his free month of xbox live. He is debating on whether to just get 3 months or a full year. I am trying to convience him to get the full year for $50 over the 3 months for $20 ( do they not teach math anymore in school?). Is there any reason not to get the full year of Live?

Also, he created a profile for me, but says it will not work on his live account. Is that only on the free month or never? We have a friend that has a 360 and his son has the account, but the dad also plays on-line with his own stats and such (CoD 5).

Any other advice or hints you can share would be appreciated.

The only reason you should do 3 month and not 12 is if you are sympathetic to MSFT and want to help our overall revenues.

Also you can get the 12 month for cheaper than the $50 elsewhere.

Amazon lets you buy the 12 month card + 1 month (13, for the math impaired) for $45.

Costco has 12 month card (if you are a member) for $39.

Buy.com has it for $40 (don't think anything else is required).

Bottom line is...12 month at $50 is better than the 3 month on a per month basis, and you can go better than $50. See comments on previous page.

As far as your other ? - is this about not being able to sign into the gold trial under your profile? Not being able to sign in as a silver/free member under your profile? Or not being able to sign in as you as a secondary profile when you are both playing on the same console?

You cannot sign under the profile he created for you and access Gold/multiplayer stuff. Not under the trial. Not when paying.

What you should try is having him sign in and initiate a multiplayer session. Have you sign in (or he "log on" as player 2 on second controller on same console) and try to join the multiplayer session that way. So same console. Two profiles logged in on separate controllers. The Gold one doing the multiplayer initiating.

I think it was just during the Trial period, after we shell out the money I will try again, hopefully it will work and I can get on once in a while and embarass myself on the games.

We got the one year of live card and it is still not letting me sign on to live. We added the card to my son's account, but it won't let me log in under my name. Does each profile on the xbox need its own live card?

It looks like that's what WilliamSSL was addressing at the end of his last post, Mike. Bummer, huh?

Un-bummer news, if you're lucky:
Sears is clearing out their 120 GB HDs, and if you manage to find one, it rings out at $49.99. Seeing as the MSRP is $149.99, that's pretty significant. I just got one; hope someone else here lucks out too!

Need some help (like today).

Doing next wave of Gold LIVE planning i.e. what do we layer into it to expand the value.

Things like Cloud storage (ability to save games/profiles to Cloud and access from other consoles...or just free up storage).

Organizable friend lists

Adding in Pandora...

Remember - this is LIVE, not console.

thx in advance.

Cloud storage or back-up of saved games would be a nice addition, provided there's some reasonable assurance of its safety.

I like the pandora idea, too. Ideally you could run it while playing a game to provide your own soundtrack. That wouldn't be ideal in every situation, but it would certainly be nice to switch out the music in stuff like the WWE and UFC games where you're stuck listening to the same rawk songs at every load screen.

I'm not sure what you mean by 'layering" the experience, but if that means introducing new pay scales, I'd say no, and while you're at it keep the ads out of Gold. We pay for the service and shouldn't have to be marketed at while doing so.

Some sort of Facebook integration for adding friends and such would be nice. Actually anything that helped you find friends without having to mess with typing in the names would be good.

Also anything you can do to discourage homophobic and/or racist 14 year olds from being online would be nice. In fact, why not just make a Live area specifically for racists and homophobes, so the rest of us don't have to deal with them. A lot of perfectly nice games multiplayer stuff gets ruined by malicious little shits.

Sorry - my layer comment was a more a "what do we put into GOLD to enhance value prop / attract new set of paying users". Not a tiering thing.

Good feedback.

Facebook (and Twitter) are launching on LIVE in a couple months. But the adding friends integration is good.

And I don't want to play with other racists and homophobes. I want to torture people.

Hulu via Xbox Live would be pretty amazing. Make it happen.

Hulu would be awesome. I already use the Netlfix feature entirely too much, but this would just put it over the top.

In my above comment I also meant to say that social networking sites would be good because then so you can hit me up on my muthafuckin Myspace so I can kill yah, and if you wanna bump then let's go 'cuz I ain't afraid of your muthafuckin' ass. A'ight, bitch? Laytah.

Just wanted to resurrect this thread since we had been talking about the prices of Xbox Live before--

Link

quote:
Kmart and Sears have announced a special deal in celebration of the new Xbox Live Dashboard Update, which arrives this week. Starting November 17, the same day as the update, gamers can pick up discounted Xbox Live Gold subscription cards. Three-month cards are being knocked down from $20 to $15, while twelve-month cards are dropping from $50 to $35. Not a bad deal for gamers looking to get their online gaming on the cheap -- or those looking to give it to others for the holidays.

The cards will be available only on the Sears and Kmart websites through November 21.

Question for those of you who would know... Do the cards expire or can I hold on to them until next year when my son's year expires? Do I need to hold on to them or will it just add a year to my son's account?

There's no need to hold onto it at all. If you buy the card and add the code to your account, it'll add twelve months to the subscription... it won't override the existing months left on it.

Hey Tex, has there been any discussion whatsoever about maybe adding a fully functional web browser?

I had a big post here about categorically what we invest in and why ...and what we don't. I don't want to risk getting fired for potentially leaking anything so I deleted it.

Suffice it to say..."making internets on the teee veee" is not the strategy.

Also, Google owns youtubes.

We can take bets on what will happen first:

youtubes on xbox
xbox app on iphone

Link.

A new iPhone application entering the crowed marketplace allows all Xbox Live addicts the ability to connect to their account and do pretty much everything you can think of. Bad news, it isn't free. The $1.99 app lets you sign into your account, browse and respond to friend requests, check messages and even creep your friend's Gamercard on the go.

But, before you slap your $2 on the table, we'd recommend you wait for Microsoft to respond to the app's list price. In August 2008, Microsoft mandated that all Xbox Live-related applications be free. So, it may just be a matter of time before the 360 Live app drops to the easy-to-swallow price of free.

So I fucked up and did not get the year of Live cheap from Sears as was previously posted, and the wife is now pissed at me.

Anyone hear of any discounted sales on live coming up anywhere?

Newegg and Costco both have 12M for $39.99.

That's about as cheap as you're going to get, unless you work for Microsoft
