Xbox Live pros/cons
So a brief explanation here...
A buddy of mine has a pretty sweet opportunity coming up soon-- he's interviewing for product manager of Xbox Live, meaning he'll be in
charge of things like the contest distribution, customer experience, customer service... basically the whole portal/presentation.
Anyways, I know quite a few of us here dabble in Xbox Live, so I thought I'd help him out and get a little feedback from some of you in
preparation for his interview.
What do you love and hate about Xbox Live? Why?
If there were two or three things you could change about the service, what would you do and why? This could be things like the amount of free games
offered, DLC, etc.
Thanks in advance guys!

Right now, my only XBL complaint is that the content is coming more and more sporadic now, and when it does come, it is inconsistent. A good example
would be the the Smackdown vs. Raw 2009 Roster Update that was supposedly available for both 360 and PS3: PS3 got the update close to a month ago
now, while 360 has yet to even get close to getting it. And a good inconsistency example is in the TV Shows available on Live, more specifically the
fact that, say, Justice League Season 1 has all the episodes available except for part one of the first series arc, while Season 2 is missing parts
three or four episodes in general (not to mention that up until two weeks ago, one episode on Live was only a half of an episode).

Regardless of what you think about XBOX Live, Costco has a frickin' awesome deal going on it right now.
12 Month Subscription + 1 Bonus Month (so 13 mos)
$39.99 (vs. the $49.99 normal rate)
Plus a $10 off auto-coupon.
So $29.99 gets you 13 mos.
Expires March 13.
Linky
And while it says "online" I got the same deal in the store on Saturday.

Subtotal: $29.99
Shipping & Handling: $6.42
Non-Member Surcharge: $1.50
Tax: $2.37
Order Total: $40.28
And the shipping is 7-10 business days. Meanwhile, New Egg sells them for 39.99, no tax, and free shipping. It may only be 30 cents, but hey:
economy, Barack, the Dow, mortgage, free trade, socialism. Any of those words help there?
Edit: Also, Amazon may have them beat at $38.99. Hilariously enough, you can
buy USED 360 Live cards for a bit more than the new
ones

There's an offer on my Xbox main screen for 12 months for $39.99.
I feel like I should subscribe to the service, but only really play GTA and Guitar Hero World Tour. I enjoyed my stint on GTA online, but don't
know how much time I'd really dedicate to it. I kind of like the idea of Netflix, but that's another cost in there-
For the two games that I have- is the rest of the Gold content on there worth it?

I have a 48-hour Gold trial card I got with Fable II that I'll never use. If you wanna try it out for two days and see what Gold is like, just
U2U me Joel, and I'll give you the code.
Edit-- looking at the card right now, I hadn't noticed what it says before: "48-hour trial allows acces to online multiplayer gaming, but not
the other Gold membership features."

To get access to a free 1 month membership, can't you just sign out, create a new gamertag using a new email address/passport account, and then
log in with that?
That would treat you as a "new Silver member" where you get the free 1 month Gold membership that comes with that?

I never thought to do that- then again, you do have to enter your name and all sorts of personal information to get a new account going.
I've done the free-trial month before; one came with GTA4. I enjoyed the two-three times I played online over the course of the month-
realistically, however, I don't see myself sitting down to do so again more than that much.
I'm wondering how good the rest of the package and perks are, basically, since my actual use of it to play games is limited to my small
library.
I assume Street Fighter 4 has an online component? That's about the only other game I'd want to play.
(Thanks for your advice/input!)

Basically, perks you get for Gold are playing online and getting DLC (that's slang for downloadable content, ya heard) a week or so earlier than
the Silver members. That's just about it. If you don't play online or like bragging to your poor friends about getting stuff early, you
don't really need Gold. Also, Street Fighter does have DLC, but not sure on the online play.

I believe there are demos that only release for Gold members as well, and whenever there are sales on stuff on the marketplace, those only apply to
Gold members.

The leaderboards add a lot to certain games. I'm inching my way up toward the top 1000 in ranked wins in Uno, and although I doubt that
accomplishment will be raking in the mad pussy or anything, it'll still be pretty nifty.
I love Live. I like being able to compare my progress in any given game with my friends who have played it. I like multiplayer in certain games like
Call of Duty and Madden. It's easily worth the $50 a year to me.

We are kicking off fiscal year 2010 planning right now for XBOX / Live.
Wanted to use this thread to get suggestions / ideas from folks re: enhancements to make or issues to resolve for XBOX console, support/service, and
the Live platform.
Key business questions we will be working to address include:
If you have an XBOX 360 but haven't connected to Live, why not / what need to happen to create value in Live and/or remove barriers?
If you're a Silver but haven't upgraded to Gold, why not and what would it take?
If you've been Gold but dropped, why and what would bring you back to being a paying Gold member?
If you're Gold, are you doing online/autorenewals or purchasing 1/3/12 month renewal cards at retail stores an using those? If going the retail
route, why and what would it take to drive you to online/autorenewal/credit card billing?
What other enhancements/issues?
This is NOT about games i.e. I wanna see ............ on XBOX.
Obviously we are not coming into this with a blank slate, but wanted to get some perspective from you folks here.
Balance any feedback against this week's E3 announcements e.g. Facebook, NATAL, avatar marketplace, etc.
thx

I have been a Gold Live member since I got my 360. I have been doing automatic renewals, but I am thinking about switching to retail, since a lot of
retailers give decent discounts on the full-year membership.
Regarding the new announcements, they don't change much for me. I like that Microsoft is enhancing the Live experience, because it seems like
they want the 360 to be around for a while. But, I'm not going to be Twittering or using Facebook while I am on Live. The game downloads could
be nice, as long as there was a discount over retail.
That's about it for me. I hope this helps.

2 cents
I don't ever buy points online or pay for the monthly membership either. I guess I don't like typing in my credit card information because
I just don't want another party having it when the latest "10,000 credit card numbers stolen from video game giant" story pops up. I guess its
irrational on my part, but I'm just giving feedback so there goes.
Also, I really think that Live would benefit from running a discount on the monthly subscriptions for Gold accounts a couple times a year. Last time I
renewed my account, it was with 13 month card that cost me just $38 with free shipping from Buy.com. I have no reason to pay over live when I can get
a much better deal elsewhere. Just saying...

I always buy the 13 month cards at retail stores too for that exact reason-- you can sometimes find a good deal on them.
Although for Microsoft points (which I buy a lot of), I tend to buy them directly over Xbox Live... I had a problem with the retail cards a few
months back that made me weary of ever getting one again.
And here's your feedback on E3-- Microsoft pretty much blew Sony and Nintendo's presentations completely out of the water. I have no
doubt I'll be spending hundreds of dollars on games this winter. And I'm more stoked about Project Natal than I ever was for the
Wii.

I loved the 360 vids from E3. All the upcoming projects look very interesting. If Project Natal is real, then I'm scared it might turn
self-aware and start killing. That Milo stuff was crazy ahead of its time, really wild stuff.

I did the month for a dollar promotion they ran a few weeks ago... I'm liking playing Street Fighter and Puzzle Fighter online. I still
don't know if I'd use it enough in a given year to be worth $50.
It seems like they're phasing out the 13 month store cards and switching to straight 12 month ones... that kinda sucks. If anyone on here sees a
really good deal for a 12 month subscription, please let me know!
... also, some of you guys should really gimme your gamertags. Wasn't there a thread for that at one point? I suppose I should check for it
before wondering out loud.

I bit the bullet when my $1 trial month ran out and bought a year + 1 through Amazon.com. It had the perks of being instant and tax-free, so I'm
telling myself that makes up for the fact I didn't get the deal for $40.
What pushed me over the edge as far as wanting Gold was 1 v. 100. I chanced upon the "real" game (not extended play) on Friday night, and had a
really friggin fun time. If anyone's interested in playing against me in my crowd group, let me know- I enjoyed playing against Chris Is Good -
he who stomped me.
Between Street Fighter, Puzzle Fighter, GTA and 1 v. 100, I see myself spending a lot of time in front of my TV in the future. If I can only get my
Xbox to stop making my entire living room vibrate...

I, too, enjoy the 1 vs. 100 prize rounds. The one thing that does get annoying is the fact that I know I will never win in the crowd, since the top
three guys seem to just know what the answers are going to be and lock in immediately: I mean, I had a round of that on Friday night where I got all
the questions right AND answered them the second that the correct answer showed up, and somehow I was 100 points behind the top twenty or so guys.
Basically, unless you're the 1 or the 100, you'll never win a prize, since there are tons of uber-nerds that study the patterns before the
games or something dumb like that.

I noticed that too. I was on a streak of answering questions immediately, but still wasn't anywhere near the top three. I don't know how
they hell they could answer every question correctly, and seemingly so much more quickly.
Although it was kinda cool yesterday-- I was playing an extended play round, and when they took a break after question 20, I checked out the stats,
and I was actually in the top ten out of everyone playing. Then I got a few wrong, and fucked that all up.

I'd also like to know how stupid some of these people they choose to be "the 1" could possibly be? I mean, did you guys see the one who got
to 6,500 MS Points and needed to use a help thing to figure out what planet was closest to the sun? In fact, how stupid are some of the "100" guys?
There was that one question asking to fill in the blanks for the movie "The Muppets Take _____", with Manhattan being the only logical answer, and
it knocked out 30 people.

When I was playing on Saturday, one of the guys who was the 1 had the question, "What is the highest number on a six-sided die -- 6, 5 or 8?" And
he needed to ask for help from the mob.
But the person who was the 1 after him topped even that. The question was, "Which sport uses trained raptors -- Croquet, Raptorball or Falconry?"
The guy chose Raptorball. I couldn't fucking believe it.
