Royal Rumble

The Royal Rumble is to many of us the 2nd biggest show of the year so I figured I'd get the topic started on it. I'm sitting here trying to think of who is going to win it this year and this is what I can realistically come up with.

Cena: I hope not.
Punk: Very possible.
Mysterio or Batista (whomever isn't facing Taker): Batista would be very logical, but I doubt it with Rey.
HHH: Very possible.
HBK: Unlikely with Taker on horizon for WM.
Kofi-Miz-Morrison: The most likely "breakout" candidates if they wanted to make a new star. Probably a reach however.

Any one think someone else is a legit threat?

Lastly, part of me wishes that Santino wins it. It would take a ton of balls by the WWE, but talk about an underdog story. In a world where Sheamus is the Champion of the WWE is it really impossible?

Punk will probably be facing Christian. Batista and Mysterio will both be facing Taker. So it really leaves the winner between HHH and Cena.

Yeah, I hate to agree with DevSop on this but I do. Cena and Hunter have to be the two favorites, although I do see two alternate scenarios:

Scenario with a moderate chance of happening: through some fluke, Sheamus retains his title against Orton. Orton flips out, beats the hell out of Ted DiBiase, and takes his spot in the Rumble and wins. Orton is then forced to put his #1 contender spot on the line at No Way Out against Cena or HHH, only DiBiase costs Orton the match, completing the face turn and setting up Sheamus/HHH or Cena for the title and Orton/DiBiase at WrestleMania.

Far far less likely scenario: Orton takes the title from Sheamus and later that night DiBiase wins the Rumble, with Orton assuming that he'll be challenging the Smackdown champion or Christian and DiBiase saying "nah, I think I'd rather take the title from you"

Also, its an even bigger long shot than DiBiase but maybe they'll pull the trigger and try to elevate John Morrison by letting him win the Rumble and challenge Batista. Because honestly, if Batista wins the title and Taker is tied up with HBK for Mania, who else is going to challenge Batista for the title?

I don't buy that Orton vs. Sheamus is going to stay that way... heel vs. heel just seems unlikely to me. I get the feeling they'll change it to a Fatal Fourway as soon as next week, with the shady way Orton won the match last night.

Taker's the champ, right? I could see him not replying to HBK and Shawn has to win the rumble to get a "title shot" which he could care less about but since Taker holds the title, he jumps ship and gets his wrestlmania match. Of course, Tuesday night bible study still stands in the way of that...

Its unlikely but it isn't completely unprecedented. Kurt Angle defended the WWF title against Triple H at the 2001 Rumble when both men were heels and it ended up being a hell of a match, to boot. Of course it didn't hurt that this was also during the Trish-Stephanie feud which added a lot of heat to the match, and Sheamus is nowhere near as established as Angle was at that point.

But now that you've mentioned it, Cena (or at least Kofi) getting added to make it a triple threat is probably a more likely scenario than a title match between a guy who can't wrestle and a guy who, in spite of holding the title, half the fans still don't really recognize yet.

That would just be a retread of Batista breaking from Evolution, wouldn't it? Not that WWE has ever shied away from repeating themselves. Still, I'd be surprised if they put 2 low-level main eventers in the same match. It's one thing to take a guy like Sheamus/Rey/Benoit and put them in their with proven bankable stars like HHH or Angle. I'd be amazed if WWE was dumb enough to bank on Orton/Dibiase.

Personally, although I know the chances of this happening are almost nil, I'd like to see Christian take it and do a Shane Douglas NWA belt style thing with ECW.

With the rumors that ECW is being rebraded/shut down, take Christian, have him win, than basically toss down the ECW title saying it's not worth the cheap silver it's made of, have him challenge whoever for Raw/Smackdown title, meanwhile setting up an ECW/Whatever tourny that finishes out at Wrestlemania.

I know, unlikely, but it would create a new main event heel out of someone who can talk and wrestle...an odd combination I know.

If the WWE has the balls, this year's Rumble needs to go to Morrison. He was a more than capable IC champion and his continued feud with McIntyre is ok, but time to move on to bigger and better things. But knowing the "E" like we do, they will do the safe thing and go with either Trips or Cena.

I'm still hoping Edge is healed enough to be a surprise entrant and win. No idea if there's any chance of this happening and don't want to know as it would be a great surprise moment. Doesn't seem likely to happen though so I guess it's between HHH, Cena and HBK.

I hope WWE does let Edge's return be as big a surprise as possible. I hate when they spoil returns or debuts (of known stars) with tons of "Edge is coming in 2 weeks" videos and stuff. It just sucks all the excitement out of everything and ruins the "anything can happen" vibe that they used to have.

I think the only way that will happen is if Y2J somehow wins the WWE championship at the Rumble.

This year has to go to HBK. I think Vince set it up on RAW a few weeks ago when he said to get a shot at the Undertaker at Wrestlemania you will have to earn it.

I like the Ted Jr. thing and Orton, but it has not been long enough since that happened with Evolution's Batista and HHH. I also think Ted Jr. is not ready for that kinda push, maybe a nice IC or US title reign.

I agree... I'm no Cena fan, but they sure did his return right when he came out during the 2008 Rumble match. I wasn't expecting it at all.

I still don't think Edge would be ready for the Rumble though, would he? When he first got this injury, every report said at least a year. Even all the talk about him coming back at Wrestlemania seems pretty iffy.

Well he could win the rumble whilst pretty much completely unable to wrestle in any number of ways - especially given his whole ultimate opportunist vibe: mysteriously arranging #30 and knocking out the last man, going through the ropes and hiding for most of the rumble or something along those lines.

Or have Batista win the title from Undertaker and still have HBK win the Rumble and use it to challenge Taker. Or HBK could say this is his plan before the Rumble, only to get eliminated. He could then interfere during the Undertaker vs Batista match costing the Undertaker the title.

I don't know who I'd have win the Rumble. Assuming it's Batista and Cena, I'd rather Cena not win to challenge Batista, but something different and have Batista as champion call out Cena to be his challenger given their past history I think it could work.

However if Cena/Batista for a title and HHH/Sheamus for the other, than that eliminates any possibility of a "longshot" winning the Rumble.

As mentioned, Morrison would be perfect and he'd go on to challenge Batista. McIntyre could be thrown into the MITB match at WM. However then what happens to Cena at WM?

Totally agree. Returns, be it from injury or whatever else, are one of the few big surprises left nowadays and it always pisses me off when they ruin a big return with those lame 'coming soon' vids. It just reeks of them trying to get a few extra viewers to tune in for the return show and 'fuck you' to all the fans that would've been watching anyway and appreciated the surprise.

And it's shortsighted.

Sure, you might pop a couple extra viewers by telling everyone when so-and-so is coming back. But then the rating will just drop back down again in a few weeks.

But if these kinds of things happened unannounced then you'd have to tune in more often to make sure that you didn't miss anything and ratings would go up.

I think HBK would be the smart money then using his title shot to force Taker into a WM match.

Bonus points if HBK announces this then Taker somehow loses the title before Mania. That'd lend itself to some fun scenarios.

Personally, as always, I'd like someone out of the blue to win it. Miz would be fine by me.

The key to figuring out the Royal Rumble card is figuring out the WM card. There is two possible roads it goes down.

Road one DX vs Hart Foundation (option 1)

or

Undertaker vs HBK (option 2)

I think CM Punk or Batista wins the Royal Rumble if HBK faces the Undertaker.

If HBK does not face the Undertaker and it is John Cena....

Then Batista wins the title at the Rumble
Orton win at the RUmble.

Batista vs (royal Rumble winner) (Big Show maybe?)
Orton vs Mysterio? (Big Show Maybe Mysterio?)

Here's what I presume WrestleMania will look like now and it's a matter of how we get there.

HBK vs. Taker
Vince vs. Bret
HHH vs. Seamus
Cena vs. Batista
Orton vs Dibiase
Jericho & Punk vs Edge & Christian
MitB (Kofi, Drew, Miz, MVP, Morrison, Shelton, Ziggler, Regal)
Harts vs. Cryme Tyme vs. 2 other teams

It'd be nice after a couple of months of jobbing out to a burn-out comedy act that they'd find a way to do something relevant with Jericho and Big Show. But who am I kidding, the goddamn midget is going to go into Mania with better heat that those two will.

Bite your tongue!

Jericho will win the Rumble.

And then through the power of legal loopholes will challenge for *every* title at WrestleMania to become the first ever WWEWorldECWInterUSUnifiedTagWomen'sDiva Champion!

Which he will promptly lose to HHH on the following Monday... because of Hornswaggle.

I think HBK is a pretty decent choice, particularly if UT retains at the Rumble. They seem pretty hell bent on HBK/UT for WM, and that seems like the easiest way to guarantee it to occur. Then, if the plans really ARE for HHH/Sheamus as well, they can easily explain that with HHH saying to HBK, "You get that title, I'll get this one." Otherwise, I'm having a hard time coming up with a good explanation for HHH/Sheamus to occur.

Of course having a logical explanation for things doesn't usually get in the way in the E.

I think Jericho is a decent alternative too, because I'm not totally convinced Edge will be back in time for WM. Winning the Rumble would then give him reason to still be on RAW (to scout whether he wants to go after that particular title). Again, there hasn't been a strong need to have a logical reason for him to be there, but at least with a Rumble win they'd have one. But I can't REALLY see him in the ME at WM, so forget that. He's more likely to be in MITB (if Edge isn't ready), where he can be inches away from grabbing the briefcase only for Edge's music to hit, thus costing Jericho his chance to take it.

Morrison I could more easily see winning MITB than Rumble.

Orton, were he not to beat Sheamus, I could see somehow "slithering" his way into the Rumble as well. But I think even then that would turn into a plot device setting up something with him and Legacy/Ted Jr., most likely with Ted eliminating Orton.

Cena is always a possibility. It would be pretty lame though, since you don't need the Rumble to insert Cena into any title matches at any time.

Miz is definitely someone with the potential of rising to the upper tier, but he's probably not doing his match with MVP as well as the Rumble. Miz is someone I think has an excellent shot at taking MITB though. His character and that briefcase would be a great combination. He could certainly milk that for months, thus allowing him to further build towards being a true ME player.

Punk is also a possibility, what with him potentially building some sort of stable over on SD. I agree though with the penciling in of him and Christian at Mania, and I don't think they use the Rumble to make that happen (the ECW title is still an option for the Rumble winner, right?). And obviously Punk/Christian is not headlining anything. Even IF ECW is going to be killed soon, it's not happening at WM and it's certainly not ending it.

HHH, like Cena, is always a possibility. Again, with HBK/UT likely to occur, they could also go the route of HHH winning the Rumble and basically telling HBK to go after UT. Sort of a "Let's do our own thing for a bit and meet back after Mania" kind of plan. I would like to see the tag titles get dropped though. It disappoints me to see them being completely ignored.

So I guess in all that jibber jabber I basically think HBK or HHH wins the Rumble. That kind of sucks though, because it would be nice to have someone new win it. Even though the story has been done, I like when you have the "breaking through the glass ceiling" story at WM. Unfortunately, there really aren't any super compelling and fan friendly choices in that scenario. Basically it's either Morrison or Kofi, and I just can't wrap my mind around either one of them ending Mania with the belt in their hands.
