Lady GaGa
After seeing her "Bad Romance" video three times in the last two days, I've come to the conclusion that, gay/straight, man/woman, freak/not
freak, on drugs/sober...whatever her trip is....She's fucking awesome.
She may be dead or in an insane asylum by age 30, but she is fucking awesome.

She's like twice as masculine as anybody in the entire cast of Twlight.
But yeah, her stuff is catchy as hell. I'll never argue that she isn't talented. Especially considering that (according to Wikipedia) she
was accepted into Julliard at age 11, even though she never went.

You obviously haven't seen the Bad Romance video. A man would not have an ass like that. Assuming that is actually her ass that is shown in
it.

I was about ready to say you were all fucking nuts. Everything I'd ever heard from her sounded exactly the same. But then I decided to watch
some of the other videos attached to that link, just to see if anything better came along.
Wow.
The songs she releases as singles are definitely catchy (in an "I want to kill myself because I can't get this fucking song out of my head"
sort of way), but the other songs are WAY better. I'd recommended that "Speechless" video, which really supports CiG's statement about
her talent. I just can't decide if the whole "Lady Gaga" persona is a good or bad thing. Does she have to be SO off her rocker to get
attention? It's a little too distracting to me, but I'm an old fart that thinks the crap kids listen to today is shit.
You'd think with my homo tendencies I would've like her way before now. Of course I don't get drag queens either.

Well, we're talking about her, aren't we?
I mean, I definitely get what you're saying, but the entertainment industry these days seems to dictate that you better have some kind of
amazing hook to get people to pay attention to you because thanks to YouTube and MySpace and all the other outlets to put yourself out there,
there's just way too many other acts to compete with. I agree with you that the general majority of popular music today is godawful noise but
there are an equal amount of musicians out there with tons of talent making great music who just can't seem to break into the mainstream because
they aren't American Idol finalists or they don't drink the blood of virgin kittens or perform their live shows in pasties or best friends
with somebody who has made it. I feel like Lady GaGa is doing what she needs to do to stand out and keep our attention in this ADD society, so
I can't really fault her for that. And when she's established she can always calm down and change her image, which seemed to have worked
for Christina Aguilera pretty well (when people got bored with the choir girl image, she turned into a dirty outrageous whore to keep people
interested before finally having a kid and resuming being a normal human being again).

Yeah, that was pretty much where I was going with my questioning of her "character." If she's presenting herself as batshit insane just to
get noticed, it makes me a little sad because she appears to have some serious talent underneath all that. Yet I can totally grasp that decision, and
it's obviously working very well for her at the moment. The Christina Aguilera example is exactly what I was thinking as well, hoping that at
some point Gaga decides to just be herself. Unless of course this IS who she is, in which case she's fucking nuts. Talented, but nuts.
I still hate Poker Face though. A lot.

I saw some of her videos last month and was thoroughly impressed. It's like she's a pop version of Tool or Pink Floyd. She's got a
Madonna vibe about her that I like. I don't know if I'd ever buy her stuff (as I'm not a huge fan of pop music) but I know I
appreciate her talent the same way I appreciate Justin Timberlake or Madonna or old school Michael Jackson. They're just phenomenal
entertainers.

Am I going to start a flame war if I say that hearing pop music like this usually makes me want to stick a shotgun in my mouth? I'm sorry but
any attempt to attach redeeming value to this sort of insignificant pop culture fluff comes across as silly as the thugs in "Reservoir Dogs" trying
to get to the deeper meaning in Madonna's "Like A Virgin" (i.e. her having a Marianna's Trench-deep pussy that only gets satisfied by
monster horse cocks).
I'll be the pariah here on this one. I can't help it, I genuinely hate this sort of music. I thought pop was horrid back in the 80's
and 90's but it just seems to be getting worse than it ever was before.
PS: confirming my own homo tendiencies by saying out loud that George Michael's "Freedom 90" was one of the finest pop songs ever written. And
I have three Duran Duran CD's in my collection.

Their videos are both really weird.
Although from what I can see, this really only applies to the original Lady Gaga video posted. Everything else I saw wasn't terribly insane
(outside of the clothes and makeup). Tool has no comparison visually. I cannot ingest enough substances to even begin to tap into whatever emotions
they're trying to convey. So I went to their website (found here if anyone's interested) and
realized the videos only begin to scratch the surface of whatever altered states of consciousness each band member experiences on a regular basis.
So basically I can see Lady Gaga being like Tool in one way. Both seem to be weird just for the sake of being weird. The differences are:
a) Lady Gaga is pop and therefore superficial while Tool is progressive rock (or really undefinable) and therefore enlightened, groundbreaking, and
transcendent
And
b) Lady Gaga probably really IS superficial and doing it to sell records, whereas the members of Tool appear to be the complete opposite and present
videos that accurately represent the controlled insanity encompassing their respective lives. After going to Tool's website, I can't tell
whether to be impressed by their artistic endeavors and outside-the-box thinking or to be scared for my personal safety.
Poker Face still sucks. A lot.

You can look for the deeper meaning in Tool's stuff all you want but it will never change the fact that they are a horrible band that makes crap
music and Maynard Keegan's singing voice sounds like an athsmatic dog being beat to death with the claw end of a hammer.

After seeing her on Oprah yesterday (yes, I got off work early and Goon alerted me to the fact that she was going to be on Oprah so.....I watched
Oprah. But Goon was watching it first!!) I'm starting to wonder how much of her image/interviews, etc. are calculated. She just seemed like
she was saying all the right things, talking about saving Haiti, talking about how much she loves Oprah....it wasn't edgy at all. But she
probably figured that Oprah's audience wouldn't want "edgy." So, she went with an image in that interview so all the old yentas in the
crowd would say "Awwww, she's such a sweet girl! I don't care if she wears all those weird outfits, she's a really nice
girl!!"
In other words, it made her more "Madonna"-like. Which isn't a bad thing.

I don't always see pop music as always being superficial. 99% of the time (a stat I pulled out of my ass) I would agree with that statement. But
there is an artform in pop music which is why the genre has lasted as long as it has and has it's fair share of legends which include (in no
particular order):
a) The Beatles
b) Madonna
c) Michael Jackson (from the early days, the guy who almost single handedly saved the recording industry with Thriller)
d) Elton John
As for whether or not Lady Gaga only does this image for the money, I would say she does it for the love of putting on a show. Does she get paid well
for doing it? Yeah. But she goes an extra mile (from what I've seen) that Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys and Jessica Simpson don't go
for. Just because you don't like pop music doesn't mean it's relevant. I don't like Nickelback but I can't deny
they've been shitting out #1 singles for a decade now. Which means that whether or not you like them, they are relevant.
To tie this back to Lady Gaga (and my equating her to Tool), I didn't mean to imply she sounded like Tool or even represented the same things. I
simply driving at the fact that she is an especially eccentric performer in a field full of eccentric people. She put a vibe off for me that reminded
me of the vibe I got from Tool. It's the same energy in a completely different kettle. But now I'm just talking all hippie like.
**EDIT** And I almost forgot: SCSA, I laughed my ass off when I read your reply.

I consider her the second coming of Madonna, actually. And yes, I do think she's her image is very calculated It shows with her videos, her
stage presence, her outfits. She even admits to it when she says that fashion is a very important part of her music and her songwriting, and that
when she writes songs, she thinks about how it will be performed and all that. It's not that she's weird, it's that she's
very conscious about putting on a show. In the music industry today, it's really important to stand out, especially if you're doing pop
music. She's doing a great job of doing that, that's for sure.

It's funny but back in the day it was dudes that dressed in weird outfits and looked like drag queens or spacemen. Bowie, Elton John, almost any
Funk band. Boy George did some of that too.
Gaga is just another in a line of performers using wardrobe to stand out. Some would say she is ripping off her style choices:
I think in the not too distant future she'll go away for a little while and do a whole stripped down return. That's just the way of
things.
