PPV Predictions/Discussion/Results: WWE Extreme Rules (April 25, 2010)
The big "OOfficial" preview by The Me will go up on the main page late tonight or tomorrow (depending on how I prioritize my time and when I get
Pyro's SD recap and all), but I figured I'd start this thread so that folks popping by for SD talk and the news about WWE's
firings/spring-cleaning can chime in on the weekend's biggest event.
For whatever it's worth, I think my preview will end up striking a fairly optimistic tone. In this age of "themed" PPVs, this is the one that
makes the most sense: the show immediately after WrestleMania, but before the re-shuffling of the Draft, and you add in tons of crazy stips for every
match. Granted, they probably won't do a lot with said stips, seeing as how this is the new G-rated WWE (now with Gut Testicles~!), but
it's a token gesture to make these matches seem bigger and give us more sense of closure, as they are largely the re-dos and final blow-offs
from WM26.
I can dig that, in a theoretical sense. It remains to be seen how it plays out in a pragmatic sense.
Here's the 7-match card:
John Cena vs. Batista (Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Title)
Jack Swagger vs. Randy Orton (Extreme Rules Match for the World Title)
Edge vs. Chris Jericho (Cage Match)
Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk (Punk Must Shave His Head if he Loses)
Triple H vs. Sheamus (Street Fight)
JTG vs. Shad Gaspard (Strap Match)
Michelle McCool vs. Beth Phoenix (A Match for the Diva Title That is SO EXTREME it has NO STIPULATION~!)
ALSO: Because of the Volcano Mess, I'm assuming that whatever was planned for the Harts/ShowMiz has just been pushed back a bit.
Instead of doing a match at the PPV, I'd half expect an unannounced "extra" to be Miz cutting a promo insisting that Monday's planned
segment (Bret declaring ShowMiz to be the best tag team ever) happen here on the PPV. Which could be pretty cool. Miz + Indignation = Promo Gold.
Gives more time to keep building up Kidd and Baby Bulldog, too, before the inevitable match.
I'll refrain from adding my predictions here, as an enticement to get y'all to come back and read the Main Page Column at some point
before Sunday Night. Plus, I'm sure the gang here will cover most of my more wanker-y notions (such as indignation over Swagger's title
reign and OBVIOUS impending loss to Orton, or the latent racism of two black men in a Whuppin' Match, or a strident belief that they might as
well not even hold the show because Edge/Jericho is SO gonna be the Match of the Night)...
So hop to it, kids. Prognosticate yer asses off, and then on Sunday, remember to turn this into the results/discussion thread... I very seriously
doubt I'll screw with that stupid twitter thing I did for Mania again this time around, so it's on you to do your own real-time results,
kids....

My predictions:
John Cena vs. Batista: I would say it's way too soon for Cena to drop the title, but the WWE has seemed to love giving him thirty day or
less title reigns lately (and a Last Man Standing match opens things up for shenanigans). Still, I'm gonna say Cena wins.
Jack Swagger vs. Randy Orton: I'm 100% sure Orton doesn't get pinned, I'm 99.9% Orton wins, and I'm 99.8% he picks up
the title here. It's the modern day rule of the WWE: DON'T BET AGAINST ORTON. Of course, now that I say that, Swagger will probably win.
Edge vs. Chris Jericho: Edge wins, no question about it.
Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk: I'm thinking Punk gets the win here for two reasons: the WWE isn't going to have him shave his head (at
least not yet) and Mysterio got the victory at WrestleMania. So I pick Punk.
Triple H vs. Sheamus: This one is tough to call since I could see it going either way, but like Mysterio/Punk, I'm gonna say Sheamus wins
since he did the job at Mania. Plus they can do a third and final blow-off match at some point that Triple H can win.
JTG vs. Shad: I didn't even know this was on the card, though I assume it gets announced on Smackdown tonight. I'll say Shad for
the hell of it.
Michelle McCool vs. Beth Phoenix: I wanna say Beth, but I think Michelle retains due to Vickie/Layla interference.
And I think this could kind of end up being a sleeper PPV. Any and all of the top five matches have the potential to deliver and only JTG/Shad stands
out as a bathroom break match (because I think even Beth/Michelle could be decent).

Since I have not watched any significant amount of wrestling in 6 years....and judging from the recaps, neither have the writers, here are my
picks...
Batista over Cena
Swagger over Orton
If this is the main event Edge, if not Jericho (send em home happy)
Punk over Rey
Sheamus over Trips
JTG over Shad
McCool over Phoenix
Alright already, I'm sorry, Unfuck you.

Michelle McCool vs. Beth Phoenix -- McCool, simply because I can't see them taking the title off of her so early in a feud after having
built her up so much over the last few months.
JTG vs. Shad Gaspard (Strap Match) -- Whichever one's the heel. I've only watched bits and pieces of Smackdown, so I haven't
actually seen either man since well before the break-up.
Triple H vs. Sheamus (Street Fight) -- Triple H won their last match, so it seems unlikely that they'd bother setting up a rematch if
they were just going to do it again. Also, if Sheamus loses again, he has pretty much nowhere to go right now; this could change with the draft the
next night, but I think that having him drop three straight PPV matches would pretty much cut him off at the knees, because that sort of losing streak
doesn't work with his "tough guy" gimmick. I expect some sort of shenanigans that lets Sheamus go over but keeps Triple H looking at least as
strong -- perhaps a page out of the HHH/Austin Three Stages of Hell match.
Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk (Punk Must Shave His Head if he Loses) -- Punk, no doubt about it. Misterio got his win at WrestleMania, and
Punk's hair is too integral to his Straight Edge Messiah look for them to cut it off in a storyline with Misterio. With Triple H, maybe....
Edge vs. Chris Jericho (Cage Match) -- This one can go either way. I think Edge goes over and gets back into the mix for the World Title (see
below.)
Jack Swagger vs. Randy Orton (Extreme Rules Match for the World Title) -- I'm going to go against the grain here and say Swagger retains.
If Orton wins, what happens next? Swagger's worse off than when he started and Orton gets to feud with, who, Jericho or Sheamus? I think Swagger
will win, and Orton will wind up on SmackDown to get another shot at a later date.
John Cena vs. Batista (Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Title) -- In the last couple of months, these two men have won the WWE title three
times between them. I don't see Batista getting the title back here. I expect he'll lose the match and go back to Smackdown after the
draft.

Worst. Card. Ever.
Well, probably not really, but I don't give a shit about any of these matches. I wouldn't watch this PPV for free, and wouldn't go
if I had free tickets.

I don't know that its a bad card. Its a short card, especially considering I can't imagine anyone is interested in a jobber tag team
feuding with each other for 2 weeks. It kind of speaks to how shallow WWE's "over" roster is at this point and of course we all have our
doubts about Swagger and Sheamus' chances against the "Elite." The one sided stip on Rey/Punk for the 2nd month in a row is weird and
underwhelming because it opens the door for absolutely zero payoff like last month's match. I half expect WWE is doing this on purpose to build
to the "Hair vs Join the Society/Mask" match that made sense last month... just stretched out to 3 matches in that way WWE likes doing.
The wrestling could deliver and I guess there could be a few big moments if Sheamus or Swagger can look good or Punk gets his head shaved. But a
friend asked me to go last week and I said no because it wasn't worth the effort or cash in my mind. And then I spoke to him today and he told
me he wasn't going and he doesn't really care for the same basic reason. So I think that's the basic feel of it.
Which is a shame because I do agree with Rick. This is the one gimmick PPV added in the last couple of years that actually makes good sense. A wide
variety of stipulations available that don't have to be forced in, no need to water down huge matches like Hell in a Cell, and a solid enough
booking way to prolong WM programs with amped up matches.

Well, I wouldn't say that it's a bad card, there are some interesting matches there. As I DO actually get to watch this for free,
I'll probably tune in despite the last RAW.

Yeah, like I said in my last post, I really think this PPV could deliver. Especially since most of the matches should be given a lot of time.
And I agree that I like Extreme Rules being placed right after WrestleMania. Considering we're getting four rematches from that card, it at
least keeps them fresh by having the added stipulations, instead of giving us four exact rematches from a month ago.

John Cena vs. Batista (Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Title) Bats for a major title change, because...
Jack Swagger vs. Randy Orton (Extreme Rules Match for the World Title) Swagger retains.
Edge vs. Chris Jericho (Cage Match) Edge, because Jericho got the WM win.
Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk (Punk Must Shave His Head if he Loses) Punk. The storyline isn't finished. Isn't the other half of the
stipulation Mysterio joining the SES if he loses?
Triple H vs. Sheamus (Street Fight) Sheamus, to even up the score.
JTG vs. Shad Gaspard (Strap Match) DQ
Michelle McCool vs. Beth Phoenix (A Match for the Diva Title That is SO EXTREME it has NO STIPULATION~!) Beth. Then have McCool and Co. bitching about
the loss, etc.
Harts/ShowMiz= As Rick says, I think the "Best ever" story will continue here, BUT I think it'll lead to a match here also, with ShowMiz
winning the first round of the feud.

John Cena vs. Batista
- I actually see Batista winning and wouldn't be surprised if he feuds with Orton post-Draft for the title.
Jack Swagger vs. Randy Orton (Extreme Rules Match for the World Title)
- I actually see Orton losing by some kind of interference. Possibly Cody returning? This will allow Swagger to take the belt to Smackdown and feud
with Edge after the draft for the title.
Edge vs. Chris Jericho (Cage Match)
- I see Jericho losing just because it sets up Edge as #1 contender on Friday nights.
Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk (Punk Must Shave His Head if he Loses)
- I have to think the outcome of this depends on Punk post-Draft. Sometimes, the whole "messiah punk" makes me a little uncomfortable, so I
can't imagine USA is probably all that thrilled about someone claiming to be a savior. As good as his promos are, I wouldn't be surprised
if Punk loses and the SES either disbands soon or gets tweaked prior to coming to Mondays.
Triple H vs. Sheamus (Street Fight)
- Sheamus, and then HHH will go off to make his movie / recover. The result is it rebuilds Sheamus's "monster push" (because he 'put
HHH on the shelf' and kept HHH from jobbing at WM. My hunch is that post-draft we'll see Sheamus go after Cena again as (1) Cena never
beat him after Sheamus won the title and (2) Sheamus will be on a mission to get his title back.
JTG vs. Shad Gaspard (Strap Match)
- Shad .... and I expect he's coming to Monday nights.
Michelle McCool vs. Beth Phoenix
- My hunch is Beth will beat the crap out of Michelle, win the title, and then be subjected to Piggy James-like comments about how "brutal and
man-like" she was. Plus, I have a feeling we're going to get Michelle and Layla onto Monday's to go with Maryse.
EDIT: Warrior had almost the same thoughts (minus Punk) at the same time.
My hunch is that Miz will come out, diss on the Harts, and Teddy Long will schedule another impromptu match. Which the Harts will win for the
titles.

Whoa. Where the fuck did that come from, Potsie?
If you have a problem with something "douchey" I said, go and write as such in the thread where I said it. Preferably, close to WHEN I said it, too,
but that's nearly as important as actually picking a spot WHERE I did the douchey thing. Those places do exist, I guess, but they are --
objectively-speaking -- not here. Unless you just love twitter so damned much that you take great personal offense at me calling it "stupid" and
saying I'd rather not use it on Sunday so that I can sit back and just enjoy the PPV, that is...
Alternatively, if you are simply one of the handful of folks I've accumulated over time who are WAY more entertained by
reading-between-the-lines and inventing-the-things-I'm-saying, rather than bothering to pay attention to the words I type and what they
literally mean, and you REALLY think something douchey was utterred here? I have a pamphlet of helpful tidbits that might assist you in your struggles
against the unbecoming disease of "totally imagining things to get angry about in a public forum."
Or: maybe I'm just PRETENDING I have said pamphlet so I can be said to have GENUINELY acted like a douche in this thread, thereby
(retroactively) rendering your comment wholly appropriate and accurate.
Temporal causation is for pussbags, anyway....
Rick
PS THAT IS ON-TOPIC: About the Rey/Punk match, Lucky got it right, and I'll underscore it: there is no "other half" to the stip this
weekend. At WM, it was "lose and join the SES." This weekend, it's "lose and get your head shaved." Which leads one to suspect that
match were BOTH those stips are in play will be a month or later down the line -- only after Rey has defended his independence and after Punk has
defended his hair in previous, discrete matches.

I think everyone stole most of my comments, so I'll make it short:
John Cena vs. Batista - Cena wins. Bank on it.
Jack Swagger vs. Randy Orton - Swagger wins. The Extreme Rules stip suggests to me something shady will happen to allow him to win. And since
Orton is a face or something now, he becomes dumb like all faces and won't be evil enough to win this match. Plus I don't see him moving
to SD.
Edge vs. Chris Jericho - Edge gets the WM win back and moves on to Swagger.
Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk - Punk wins. Again, no alternate stip almost assures this to be the case. Plus he already lost a little hair on
Monday.
Triple H vs. Sheamus - Sheamus wins. This match will be an attempt to "make" him. HHH can come back later to get revenge or whatever.
JTG vs. Shad Gaspard - Shad wins. I agree he'll probably get shipped to RAW to be the monster-du-jour. JTG will whip him silly at some
point in the match, with Shad yelping and grabbing/rubbing his ass because of the pain. JTG will get released this week.
Michelle McCool vs. Beth Phoenix - FYI, this is being called an "Extreme Makeover Match." Apparently that means the loser has to hang out
with Ty Pennington for a week or something. Anyhoo, Beth wins because of the "makeover" thing. McCool will end up looking like Mimi from Drew
Carey. Vickie will think she looks pretty, because Vickie is fat, ugly, and stupid.
I'll be participating in a 5K Walk/Ride on May 1st supporting the Northeast Indiana AIDS Task Force. Want to sponsor a fellow OOer as well as a

Everythings been said, but a little more insight and humor (bad humor I may add) doesnt hurt. Post count GO!
John Cena vs. Batista (Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Title)
I see John Cena retaining. There is just too many factors to imput.
I think WWE is done turning "The richest prize in the game" into a hot freaking potato.
Second, this is John Cena in match that has soley has to do with perseverence. He did it with everyone from Orton to Umaga in arguably one of his
absolute best matches. This is his thing people.
Although there are things against him, such as the Draft. With Smackdown moving to Syfy i can see them sending the face of the company to friday
nights to initally help ratings, whether he has the strap or not. But I see the WWE title staying on Raw, with Superman behind it.
Jack Swagger vs. Randy Orton (Extreme Rules Match for the World Title)
Yes, never bet against Orton, but Jacky will probably find a way. Still...whoever wins this will stay on Smackdown, and who knows if WWE wants this to
be the face of Friday nights to all the execs of the network...
http://s33.photobucket.com/albums/d64/strumble/Wrestling/?action=view¤t;=JackSwagger-21.png
Edge vs. Chris Jericho (Cage Match)
Who fucking cares it's a MOTN contender. This match will be so much awesome that everyones a winner, no matter who goes where on Monday. Just
enjoy it...but for the sake of the thread I'll go with Edge.
Rey Mysterio vs. CM Punk (Punk Must Shave His Head if he Loses)
Single Stip matches are terrible. Punk wins. They will have a rubber match, with both stips on the line and finally we might care. Just hope we get
lots of shots of kids crying when Rey eats a GTS.
Triple H vs. Sheamus (Street Fight)
This would have been funnier if I showed you some of the first results of the google search "ginger rub" but freckle porn is a no-no.
Anywho...
Enjoy your vacation HHH, I'll be there at Kmart for your big strait to DVD release.
JTG vs. Shad Gaspard (Strap Match)
I have no fucking clue why this is on the card unless WWE is trying to fill their urban quota but with a little bit of
this could the funniest thing with a little editing, Roots sound bites and music in the back. Cmon interwebs dont fail me now. However, I can still
see this as a 7 minute piss break, speaking of which.
Michelle McCool vs. Beth Phoenix
Michelle will win, because she can takerdick...C WUT I DID THAR LOLZ. In all seriousness McCool is not the big grudge that Beth is dealing with
it's Vickie. So I see Big Mommy V causing Beth the strap.
I'm new, thus my opinion is not valid.

I know this is true, but then they do the announcers and Punk keep talking about Rey joining SES when he loses? During the SD ME tag match, the
announcers were going on and on about how Rey was going to be the crown jewel of the SES if he lost.

Maybe the announcers are exactly like us and realize that the only worthwhile drama is if you a double sided stipulation match and these 1 sided
stipulations just leave you expecting the guy with nothing to lose losing? Maybe they're just confused and doing the logical booking in their
heads like we are because we all know we're eventually going to get the match we should have gotten the first time.

Anyone watching can clear it up for me if I'm wrong...
A street fight resulted in a No Contest because the wrestlers were fighting outside the ring and using weapons. In a streetfight which is entirely
designed to fight outside the ring and use weapons? Really?

If I recall correctly, WWE street fights still require a pinfall inside the ring even if there are no count outs when they are outside the ring. So a
street fight could feasably end in a no contest should one wrestler be laid out outside the ring and the other wrestler decided not to haul him back
for the pinfall.

WWE.com has some quick results but no details (also that weird shot of Sheamus is the background, which looks even weirder). Looks like Swagger
actually got a clean win, before being RKO'd. Showmiz lost a gauntlet match to the Harts who get a title match tomorrow.
And some masked man helped Punk win. I have no idea who it was but it would be awesome if people thought it was Darren Young only it turned out to be
Cena.
