They didn't offer the degree I wanted. I applied for three reasons - my aunt's a UNC grad, UNC was always my dream school, and hell, I
just wanted to see if I could get in. I did. But I wanted to be a Physical Education teacher, and they don't offer a degree in that. So I went
else where - ironically, where it was more expensive and I'm paying student loans for the next 4 billion years. UNC would have been MUCH
cheaper.
Despite the scandal, I'm still looking forward to the LSU game. It's a win-win for us now. If we lose, well, we didn't have all of
our players, and if we win, LSU really sucks. And it's always fun sticking it to the SEC.

Dammit, the objectively best game on tonight is also the one being shown on Versus. Looks like this has to be weighed rationally.
Pros
Utah/Pitt is a much better game than South Carolina/Southern Miss. Not even my manlove for Steve Spurrier can overcome watching a game with Southern
Miss participating.
Cons
It's Versus.
Of course, I could also just flip on the last preseason game for the Lions.

Not sure what my favorite part of yesterday was:
A very competitive, entertaining game between Oregon State-TCU
OR
Ole Miss getting beat in double OT by a JV school.
Both were pretty equally great. I don't really think anything else happened off script. I was surprised to see how dominant Michigan was against
UConn, and it might be a telling sign that LSU struggled against a UNC team that was at less than full strength. Also, Oklahoma was very close to
getting knocked off but they pulled it out.
Nothing to do now but wait for the weekend's main event this Monday night...

I really thought UNC was gonna pull it off in that final minute.
And if Florida plays like they did yesterday against a good team, they're gonna get stomped.
Is everyone mad here?

I couldn't believe the LSU collapse the second half. Well, I mean, I can believe it but not against a depleted North Carolina. The
dueling fumbles just sealed it, amazing last quarter to an otherwise average game.
One thing I noticed last night was there were an unusual number of safeties caused by bad snaps. Obviously it's the first game of the season and
if those were going to happen, it'd have been this weekend, but it seemed every game I watched had at least one out-the-back-of-the-endzone
safety.

This was my second favorite part of the weekend but this:
quote: Ole Miss getting beat in double OT by a JV school.
While absolutely hilarious, especially given Masoli's lack of stats, is not a giant deal to me. Because, of course, it's no Appalachian
State. LLOYD CARRRRRRRRRRRR!
quote: I was surprised to see how dominant Michigan was against UConn
The offense did what I expected. Keep in mind that outside the Ohio State debacle, they had been scoring in bunches last year and with a far less
dynamic QB at the helm. With Denard and the O-Line getting more reps under their belt, things were only going to get better. The surprise (but still a
question) was the defense. It didn't matter what formation they were in last year, they were always caught off-guard and in bad positions and
made poor tackles. Switching to a 3-3-5 raised a bunch of eyebrows during the offseason, since this is...y'know....the Big 10, and yesterday was
going to be the big test of its effectiveness against the run. Because say what you will about UConn, they have a sick running attack. It's
really all they do. And the defense, a 3-3-5, actually held its own. That was incredibly surprising. The question now is, can they stop being
the world's largest sieve against a passing attack? We'll see.
Though not against Notre Dame. Brian Kelly is going to murder us, regardless of defensive improvements.

A lot of teams had slow starts, made a lot of mistakes, and/or were in games that were a lot closer than they should have been.
Not that I agree with this, but absent a preseason like the NFL....this is one of the main reasons we get so many "powderpuff" games scheduled for
the first week(s).
Oklahoma, Florida, even Texas...+ many others...not sure how their outcomes would have been had they played a better school out the gate.
Which is what makes the Ole Miss loss that much greater and THE moment of the weekend.

Sorry, I'm just not joining in the bandwagon on the Ole Miss moment. Appalachian State was much worse and much more damning, plus Ole
Miss' student body at least has the grassroots Admiral Ackbar campaign going for them. Sure Jeremiah Masoli is a punk and Houston Nutt deserves
the shame, but I don't feel good about that loss as a big moment. Except for the kids at Jax State.
Well, Boise friggin' State. I honestly want to know what more BCS-backers want these guys to do before they get their shot at the championship.
First, it was "you need to go undefeated". Then it was "your conference play is terrible", so they move to a better one. And of course the next
bit was "you don't play anybody of worth". What excuse is going to be next? That they didn't play VaTech in Blacksburg, even though that
"neutral" field basically was Lane Stadium? When Boise goes undefeated again and a 1-loss Big 12/SEC gets in ahead of them, I can't wait to
hear what the BCS-backers come up with this time.
Because this game was damn good, especially for a first game of the season for both teams. There were the usual undisciplined plays as befits a first
game, and yet again the center-QB snap reared its ugly head, but there was also a lot of great play. Boise dominated until the weather and
VaTech's talent balanced the scales again. And VaTech wasn't the patsy of the past few years in this first marquee game; after the 1st
quarter drubbing, they showed up big time. It's a shame they had to lose this game because while it goes into the books as another first game
loss that knocks them out of title contention, they have the talent and the heart to be a championship team.
Even if they don't have the uniforms for it. Good god those things were hideous. I get the whole "logo in the numbers" thing, but it looked
like someone puked bright orange onto otherwise decent all-black uni's. And while Boise's were better, the random dark grey spots
everywhere were odd. It made them look like they had all sweat-stained their uniforms even before kickoff. And just having the blue spot on one
shoulder was distracting, almost to the point of inducing a headache. But with just those things modified, those Boise uniforms were great. VaTech,
not so much.

That game was phenominal. Even though they were ranked higher, Boise looked like the plucky underdogs and VA Tech, while living up to the Chokies
name, looked good in defeat after coming back from getting steamrolled early. That was captivating television and I can only hope we see another game
this season that lives up to the high standards set by that shootout.
How great would it be if TCU and Boise both went undefeated again this season?

I said to my wife (yes, she'll watch football with me and understands it) when Boise went back up 26-21 that win or lose, Boise had proven that
they belong in the upper echelon.
I'm a Boise fan, I think they're a great story and a GREAT team; not just the underdog everyone roots for anymore. They belong at the top
and if they run the table, they deserve that spot in the BCS title game.
Their conference is weak, yes I know. I'm sure they would have jumped at a Pac10 or Big12 invite. They joined a better conference, only to see 2
of it's top teams annouce they're leaving. Not their fault. They play who they can (Nebraska backed out of a date with the not to long
ago) and have even said they'd forgo the usual home-and-home set up to get better games. No takers. Best they have is games with Ole Miss and
BYU on the future schedule so far
Listen. Texas and Bama and Florida and probably Ohio State last year would have beat them up. They still earned a shot at it. Ohio State and Oklahoma
and whomever else is really good may well beat them soundly this year. Let's find out for real.

I just want to say that the finish of the ECU game is probably in the top-3 finishes for me that any of my teams has ever been involved in. Fucking
UN-BE-LIEVE-ABLE. I guess it really does help to have a 6'9" receiver for Hail Mary plays.

I tried reading this one, I really did. But most of the contributors there just came off sounding like morons. Out-and-out morons. The tone in their
writing just grated on me.
I much prefer the coverage at SBNation, including the best gimmick column ever in

I'll have more later, but right now there's one very important point I want to get across: Denard Robinson is a motherfucking
MONSTER.
244 yds passing with a TD, 258 yds rushing with 2 TDs.

I can't confirm or deny your praise (because I'm not going to jinx anything).
What I will say is that even with Denard's performance, that was not a good game for Michigan. Outside of DENARDDENARDDENARD!!!~!111, what I
came away from the game thinking was "Shit". The defense still blows. This game was supposed to be a benchmark test of the defense, how well it
could hold up under a good passing game. And when Crist was in there, the answer was "Not very well". Our secondary is still clueless and
outclassed. I'm liking the linebackers more and more - they're showing good football IQ - but they're still prone to bad tackling.
With Crist only playing half a game, I don't know if it was enough to show the defense can be servicable and so I'm still scared as hell
about them.
Second, we need a kicker. Badly. Send us your former rugby players, soccer players, anyone. We need a kicker.
And last, we need an actual running back. We need someone to be the Steve Slaton to Denard's Pat White, so he doesn't have to throw out
250-yard rushing performances just to carry us to a one score win. And of course this being college football, there are no free agents to be signed or
trades to be made. So we're left with either Denard doing everything all the time or Smith or Shaw stepping up. But those two showed all of
nothing against Notre Dame (except Shaw's pass-catching ability, which doesn't matter) so it does not bode well for Denard.
So, while an incredibly good day for Michigan, the questions we thought we'd see answered, weren't. And we'll have to wait three
weeks to do so, as UMass and Bowling Green aren't litmus tests. They're schedule padding. What's even more nerve-wracking is
I'm going to be in Bloomington for that Big 10 season opener against Indiana, which is now where we'll see those questions answered. Hoo
boy.
Other Thoughts: Fuck Virginia Tech. Seriously guys?? Seriously?!?! It's enough to make me wonder if they purposefully threw the game or some
other spacey conspiracy thing happened just to screw with Boise State. Because, really???
Well it sure is a good thing Florida State railroaded Bobby Bowden out before his time! Wouldn't want him to keep dragging the program down into
historic losses anymore!

Well, son of a bitch. After leading 27-21 in the 3rd quarter, the wheels came off and ECU lost 49-27 at Virginia Tech. They put up a hell of a fight
for 3 quarters at least. That would've been a hell of a win.
Oh well, Duke lost to Alabama 62-13 and UNC lost, so it wasn't a total waste of a day.

Watched parts of alot of football yesterday. It was glorious.
Oklahoma was really supposed to be better than this. I love Air Force, but they shouldn't have been that close that deep into the game. When you
compare the level of talent... add that to Texas' sloppy, uninspired play AT TECH of all places, Me thinks the OU UT game in a couple week is
going to be very ugly.
Boise rolled Wyoming. Not at all unexpected, but Wyoming game UT half a game in Austin last week. Boise just might be that good. Next week vs Oregon
State should be great.
And a note to all Coaches. trick plays in overtime can cause heart attacks.
Just ask Dantonio.

This might sound insane to anyone who doesn't closely follow the mid-majors, but Wyoming is really actually one of the most underrated programs
in the sport. They're no threat to Boise or Nevada, but they're damn sure not a gimme game right now.
And yeah, Oklahoma is extremely lucky to not to be 1-2 right now. I don't understand how they can shelack a team like FSU that is actually
pretty good and then barely stand up against whatever 13th graders almost beat them in week 1 and an Air Force team that, while damn good,
shouldn't be hanging with OU in the 4th quarter.
Did anyone happen to catch my Hogs against Georgia? DAMN, that was a game. I wish I could say the Hogs are going to give Bama hell next week but
it's going to get ugly quick, I'm afraid.
But Ole Miss is 1-2, which makes me happy.

I will be in Bloomington for the Michigan/Indiana game. It's time to see Denard in person as well as finding out just how equipped this duct
tape-and-prayers defense is for the Big 10 season. If we win, there will be pictures and celebrating. If we lose, there'll be drunken ranting
followed by a day at a cider mill to calm.
Either way it's gonna be entertaining!

Earlier today, I read an intriguing article/book review from one of my favorite sportswriters, Joe Posnanski, discussing the new book
Death to the BCS. Basically, Posanski pesents some of the key arguments
made against the BCS and in favor of the authors' proposed 16-team playoff. Although I'm sure that people would have some disagreements
over the structure of the playoff system, the core arguments against the BCS and for the playoff system are fairly sound. Of course, if you're
a sentient being who cares at all about college football (and who doesn't have a financial stake in the current system), you're probably
already for a playoff system and don't need much convincing.
One who is against the playoff system, however, is BCS Executive Director Bill Hancock (unsurprisingly, also one of the afore-mentioned people with a
financial stake in the system). Posnanski also offered him the opportunity to write a rebuttal, and he bothered to
spout cliches for a few paragraphs.
I wish I had more time to break the response down piece-by-piece but, alas, I don't. I would be interested to know what the few college
football fans around these parts (CiG, I'm looking at you) think about the book's suggestions and arguments and the counter-argument from
Hancock.
